This is my first time writing a review but who really cares? this might sound silly but i only beat it a couple of weeks ago, and i had a absolute blast! i wasnt really a CASTLEVANIA fan before, but once i beat it, i couldn't get enough. Let's get to the game. So, this game has got everything that you might want except maybe scary monsters. it has hard bosses, decent graphics, and an awsome fun factor. if you just got the game, or still in the middle, watch out for the twin dragon boss. if you kill one the other will gain health by eating the other. And be sure u reached level 50 before fighting DRAC. I strongly reccomend this who is has never played a CASTLEVANIA game in their life or who is an HUGE CASTLEVANIA FAN.

Best GBA Castlevania

I have played all three Castlevanias for the GBA (Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, and Aria of Sorrow), and I still enjoy Circle of the Moon the most. You get the most challenge, the best music, and the overall most balanced gameplay. Harmony of Dissonance wasn't horrible, but it was by far my least favorite. It had little to no challenge, not-that-great music, and I found it boring. Aria of Sorrow has improved music and difficulty over Harmony of Dissonance. But its downfall is that it's too short. That makes Aria of Sorrow a close second favorite. The only thing bad about Circle of the Moon is its graphics. They're a little on the darkside and have poor character movements (watch him run for example). But the SP or any light for that matter will take care of any darkness so you have no reason not to get this game. If you are looking for the best GBA Castlevania or just want an awesome adventure game, get this game!

A Must Have

This is an excellent game to add to any GBA collection. It combines an RPG with an awsome action game. If you like Magic, Action and Adventure, you will not be dissapointed with this game. The only problem i have with it is all the backtracking through the castle, but thats no big deal. Also, this may not be the best Castlevania game to get first because it is a little tedious, so if your new to the Castlevania series on GBA then i reccomend the new Castlevania, Aria of Sorrow, instead of Circle of the Moon.

This is the 2nd best one for the GBA

First of all, yes this game is infamous for it's darker-than-any-other-GBA graphics. It is probably highly recommended that you play this game on a backlit GBA, the Gameboy Player or the DS. This is why I gave it the overall 4 star rating.

Now for the actual game itself. After the great but overlooked Symphony of the Night (due to the fact that Sony and everybody else, which is the audience, wanting 3D games), known for it's gameplay and amazing 2D graphics, fans wanted more so when the GBA launched, a month later, this game came out. some think that this game wasn't as good as Symphony of the Night. Well, even though their mostly right, but people have to remember that this was a game that was meant for a Handheld so of course it's not as pretty as that game. the gameplay is just like Symphony of the Night except there are a few differences. Graphics are good but a bit choppy, your Whip is the only weapon you can use, the Card system is great and has a lot of experimenting, the replay value is good, The Game is not quite as large as the other one (there were 2 castles in the PSone game), The gameplay is more of "as soon as you defeat this boss this is the next area to go to" unlike Symphony of the Night in which you can have multiple paths to go (make your own decision on where to go, but still not every place you can go quite yet), the EXP system is actually better (in SOTN, whenever you fight enemies for a long time, they go from whatever EXP points they have to simply 1 EXP so your maximum level to get to is 62 to be exact) but this game doesn't have that so you can go to level 99 in this game. Because this is the rarest of the 3 GBA game (the other 2 were rereleased in a 2 in 1 cart.), some people might make their price higher than 30 bucks so get it while you can. this game is Better than Harmony of Dissonance but not as good as Aria of Sorrow (or the other non-GBA RPG Castlevania games)

i'll skip the usual rambling. the game it first does seem dull because of how slow nathan walks and the snakes on the ceiling are a pain in the ass to get past without getting poisoned. but once you get the dash powerup and a few of the weapon cards, the game starts to balance out into a decent game. the card setup within the game seems interesting but doesn't really belong. at this point i will say that the game overall was made for the castlevania fans and just about them alone, the average castlevania follower has to have some patience due to the amount of enemies attacking you and waiting for a chance to get through. most people with a good amount of time on their hands and an sp will probably be able to deal with its issues, but i don't recommend the game to the people with the original gameboy advance...the graphics are too dark...but with the light from the sp, the picture looks good and the darkness sets a mood well.

You should save your money for the ps2 castlevania ....

This game is boring you can tell that the symphony of the night crew didnt make it . Its ok but the graphics are blocky the animation is stiff. The music is cool the castle is confusing to navigate in { you dont reconize as much areas } , I mean alot of the areas look the same. Its a hard castlevania which is pretty new in the gameboy trilogy . I reccomend aria of sorrow or harmony of dissonance. theres always that great castlevania lament of innocence coming out for ps2 which i gave a 5.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon is the first Castlevania game released for the GBA and in my opinion, it's the best. The game starts off with you (Nathan) , your master (Morris), and your master's son (Hugh) about to attempt to stop Camilla from ressurecting Dracula yet again, but suddenly, your master is captured and you and Hugh fall down a huge pit into the bowels of Dracula's Castle. Hugh tells you to stay put and he'll go rescue his father and that you would just get in the way. ... Anyway, you are armed with only your whip at first but throughout the game you find DSS Cards. DSS cards are either Actions or Atributes. There are 10 of each I believe. You combine one Action with one atribute to create an effect. The action card determines the effect (such as changing your whip) and the atributes determine in what way (such as making your whip a fire whip, or an ice whip for example). This makes the game very deep because DSS cards are hard to find, yet very helpful. There are over 80 "spells" you can make if you have all the DSS cards. This game also has RPG type stats that increase as you level up or with help from a DSS card combo. These include Strength (damage dished out) Defense (damage taken) Intelligence (amount of magic points and how fast the bar refills) and Luck (likelyhood of an enemy dropping an item or DSS card). There are also subweapons in the game which use up hearts. Hearts can be found from some enemies but mostly from candles (don't ask me why). The subweapons are dagger (shoots straight ahead), holy water (shoots at the ground and does continuous damage for a few seconds), axe (shoots in an arch), crucifix (shoots straight ahead and boomerangs back), and stopwatch (everything freezes for a few seconds except you). According to

http://www.classicgaming.com/castlevania/cotm/

there are 105 different enemies in the game not including the 9 bosses in the game. There are also 14 different areas in the game with different architecture and style. There are 4 different modes to play the game with (though you have to beat the game with each time to unlock the next mode) The castle is HUGE and very well designed. At first you'll only be able to explore a small portion of the castle but after beating the first boss, you can do double jumps that allow you to reach another part. Beat another boss. Get another ability that allows you to explore more and more of the castle.
Unfortunately, the game has downfalls like any other game. For one, if you dont take the time to level up, the game can be very difficult and at times frustrating. Also, DSS cards are hard to find. You can only get one if its dropped by an enemy and only certain enemies drop certain cards. You usually have to kill the enemy more than 20 times for it to drop the card AND, unless you read a guide, you wont know which enemies drop the cards so I highly suggest you read a guide to get the most out of this game. But aside from these minor problems, the game is certainly one of the best games I've ever played and probably the best game on the GBA currently.

CoTM is like a watered down version of Symphony of The Night. The graphics are better than Castlevania IV on the SNES. The music, while repetitive, is really good. The new feature is the DSS or what I call the Card System. Various cards can be used to perform magical feats throughout the game. Most people say the limited items are a let down, but at least you don't get swamped by near-usless stuff. I like horror stories and scarry stuff so this game is right up my alley and maybe yours!

If you are a fan of the old castlevania for nintendo, you won't be dissapointed with "Castlevania:Circle of the Moon", it's just as good (if not better) than "Symphony of the Night" for Playstation. GameBoy Advance is a great hand held console, "Castlevania:Circle of the Moon" is a must.

Best adventure game in a long time

... this game is fun. Engrossing and fun.

The game starts simply and progresses evenly throughout the adventure. The challenges grow progressively more difficult, but are never too hard to complete.

If you have any interest at all in adventure games, get Castlevania. You won't be disappointed.
