PS will raise your heart rate!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 25 / 29

I had the good fortune of being invited into the PS open beta, and I have to say I'm impressed. I'm actually not a huge fan of FPS games, but the strategy and, more importantly, the *tension* that PS brings to the table makes it a real heart-pounder.

The other evening I was caught in a massive battle for control of a strategic bridge. I snuck around to flank our opposition and try to disrupt their troop supply a little, and was truly amazed at the site: literally hundreds of them streaming along the roads and over hills. My jaw dropped at the sight of it, and heart sank as I realized how unstoppable the enemy numbers were. And not only were we outnumbered at least 2 to 1, but I was deep in their territory now, completely surrounded, and praying nobody noticed the shimmer of my stealth suit moving among the trees for cover. Once in a while someone would catch a glimse of me out of the corner of their eye and turn - I could only freeze and wait while their gun barrel swept back and forth over where I was standing cloaked, hoping they wouldn't pull the trigger.

We sent word out, begging for reinforcements, but half our forces were busy battling the other enemy empire far away on another continent. We had to hold out as long as we could with what we had. (we lost the bridge eventually, but made our attackers earn every last inch of it, fighting until we were backed into a single basement room in a nearby watch tower)

Planetside has many different roles to fill, and can accomodate both squad and, to some degree, solo play as well (I particularly enjoy covert work behind enemy lines). It actually has a similar overall feel (but a much larger scope, and better graphics) as Sony's 2D, isometric view, online game 'Infantry' (which you can play a limited version for free at station.sony.com), so if you've played that, you'll have a good idea of why PS is so fun. Everyone has a job (or jobs, depending on which, and how many certifications you rack up): light/med/heavy assault, driver/pilot, engineer, medic, infiltrator/hacker. All are lethal on their own, and a force to be reconed with when they're all together and in capable hands.

PlanetSide- A new era of online gaming

Although this game has not been released yet, i have been following it since 2001.

This game is amazing, and if it works, will be the first [really big, talking in thousands of players on a single server] MMOFPS.

The graphics are great, there are many weapons too chose from. There are many vehicles, including a drop ship, buggies, quad-bikes, and hover vehicles.

Character customisation makes this game so unique. Anything imaginable can be made here. You want to be a Stealth-Engineer? Have fun. You want to be a pilot + a medic, go ahead. There are many different types of characters, ranging from pilot to a mech sort of character (referred to as a MAX armor)

Now lets talk about the story. You can choose to be one of three emipres (Vanu Sovereignty, New Conglomerate, Terran Republic). There is a planet called Auraxis, and the humans went to explore it. The wormhole they traveled through to get there closed up on them while they were there, and so now there stuck on Auraxis. People got angry, etc., etc., and now you have three factions staring down each other's throats. The Vanu are all for technology and how the human race is imperfect, and throught alien technology, can be made perfect. The NC are for a sort of... blow the sh|t out of everything you come across and the TR and just old fashioned. Hope that helps, I'd right more but I'd exceed 1,000.

Massive Halo with a bit of RPG mixed in

I'm not gonna rave to much about this game. I can't, really. I only played it for one day (it sucked me in for about 5 hours) at a friends house. Still, I'm gonna rave a little.

The game is great. But before I state what I like, let me shoot down what other people dislike.

Graphics- Yeah, the graphics aren't incredible, though they're pretty good. The vehicles could use a few touch ups and some other stuff needs a bit of improvement, but that can be fixed very quickly with patches. Remember, this is a MMOG, and it has to work for a lot of different kinds of computers. The graphics can't be perfect because not everybody's computer is perfect.

Size- Somebody complained that there were never big fights, "Like sony promised." I played for five hours and got into fights with at least 100 other players. That's incredibly huge. How big the fight is depends on where you are, what time you go online, and what your definition of huge is. If you're expecting a thousand people to be online at all times, ready to fight over one base alone and battle grimly to the death several times, you're going to be disappointed. But that's the point of the game. Those thousands of people are spread throughout a vast world and you can choose where you want to fight. The game doesn't have to be a brute war. It can be a dogfight in the air, an artillery battle between tanks, a 1 on 1 hunt through a base, whatever you want it to be. But be realistic- 100 people all fighting each other is incredible, but 1000 would be too much to ask.

My turn to rave: Great graphics (considering), great gameplay, great idea, great execution. Your character improves when you do, so the game doesn't become a click fest. Those who are good at first person shooters will be very useful, but anybody can be a useful member of the team, even by having something as simple as the necessary points to fly a transport. The game revolves around teamwork (not as much as I'd like, but enough).

The only turnoff is the price. The standard fee is around $180 a year (sorry if I'm wrong, last time I checked it was), plus $45 for the game and expansion.

The other problem is that the game may be a little TOO massive. It took me a long time to get where I wanted to go, so I ended up waiting for a ride a lot. Because of this, the masses of people were spread out in a huge world, and I rarely found a good gigantic battle. This problem is remedied by the Instant Action button, which transports you to the biggest fight on the map. Also, it became a little redundant because many of the bases use the same map.

Overall, it's a great game and a lot of fun.

Good while it lasts, I recommend it.

Let me start by saying most of what the other reviewers have said is true.
The requires at least 512mb RAM to run, and you must have DSL (or cable). 56k users can stop reading here.

If you meet all the minimum requirements the game is awesome. Massive battles. The 3 factions are well balanced. *most* players are quite friendly. Other reviewers have said it gets boring after a while. Well...to most people it does. But the 1-2 months of fun you get out of it are worth it. XP users can download a free 30 day trial period from www.planetside.com.
Do not buy the expansion though, its just not worth it. A recent server merger has increased the population quite a bit. Their are 4 servers currently: Emerald-East Markov-West Werner-Europe and the test server, I forget the name.
All in all a great game, and the only one of its kind,

It's about time

Planetside is a welcome addition to the already long list of massively-multiplayer online games. It's refreshing to see an FPS game of this kind, and I can't wait to see how it will turn out without the often frustrating dynamics of an MMORPG.

What can I say? This game is being developed by the same producer of Tribes 2 - and it does follow a similar theme. The fact that it's an MMO, and not the traditional *user* server based game, sealed the deal for me.

I do look forward to seeing how they will combat lag issues, however. If this game is a *laggy* game, considered the amount of PvP involved, I won't pay a cent.

Planetside is the Ultimate experience.

This game can be criticized in many ways but that what happens to a game ahead of it's time. The graphics are superb and the game play simple and enjoyable.

As in all online games you get out of them what you put into them. Playing on a squad linked together by TeamSpeak is an exhilirating experience. If you play solo well it can get boring.

As in last generation game the proper hardware is necessary. Memory and a fast Video card along with a good connection is a must. If you want detail in your images alot information is bouncing around your PC.

I played this game solo and in a top ranking outfit and never regreted buying this game and paying it's monthly fee. It was well worth it.

I would keep an eye on this product as it will continue to evolve.

Great Game with even greater potential!

I have recently been accepted to the Beta Testing of Planetside and it is a phenomenal game with a lot of capabilities that will be exercised in the future. The way teams have to work together in order to accomplish missions is great and the various array of character types and vehicles makes this a must for MMO fans. I am not particularly fond of first person shooters, but I love this game nonetheless. The only draw back are its pretty powerful system requirements and there is still some tweaking and balancing that needs to happen, but thats what Beta is for. Any MMO fan will love this game.

Great game!

Never before has a game captured my attention the way PlanetSide has. Right from the beginning as a Beta tester, I did the stupidest (but most fun) option in the game. I jumped right into the action and 'Instant Actioned' righ into a hot spot and was killed about 15 times before realizing what I had to do.

But, the intense level of excitement and adrenaline that you experience in your first few battles keeps you coming back for more and more and more and more. . . .

Thankfully this game comes out after school gets out or Sony would be lining up with lawsuits for causing many people from failing their classes. Honestly, the only thing you want to do when you get out of class, is play PlanetSide, join a squad and then get your Phoenix missle launcher and take out some Maxes and Reavers that are trying to infiltrate your base.

Lots of fun but I recommend having a lot of memory (pref 1024 MB) for virtually no latency (lag). Be careful! Your girlfriend and pet may leave you if you get this game!

PlanetSide: Probably the most spectacular game of its kind

Planetside is one of those games that you cannot get enough of! I recently purchased it here, Amazon.com, and I cannot wait until it arrives. The anticipation is killing me. I read up on this game before I bought it and its really cool. Bolt Driver for sniping(my specialty)and heavy asssault weapons for the MAX units. What more could you ask for?! But there are always flaws, such as the complicated certification and implant system. I was so confused at this but as I read more and more it became clear to me. Go out and buy it, I think its worth all the money spent.
