What to do next?

I took part in the beta. I was captured by the massive battles and the fun that this game does offer. However, after about a month, I got tired of it. Its the same thing every time. Get to location capture base, move to next base, capture base, etc etc. Too much repetitiveness for my taste.

The main flaws with htis game are beleived to be lag , stability, and constant downtime. Thisi sn ot entilrey true. I used to have a lot of lag, then i pruchased loads of ram, and brought it from undrer the reccomended level to over. Now, on my pentium 4, radeon 9700, and High ram computer. I have no lag. That isn't saying much, but still.

The servers only went down alot in the beta. now they are almost always up.

The game itself is geat, it may take a while to find action, even using the instant action feature, but they said they are going to fix that. when you find action, things get awesome. bullets flying in every direction. you could either go as a driver/pilot/MAX (heavvy armour)/grunt/or, my favorite, stealhters. So there are many ways to play.

Good fun, but, as has been mentioned before, this game may not be for 12 years olds who expect to be able to blast everything out of their way single-handedly. This is for team-players only.

This is going to change the entire world of online gaming, with players able to face thousands of other people from around the world all at once in a fast paced action-scifi adventure. HIGHLY recommend ordering ASAP.

Good idea, poor implementation, horrible community

Whenever getting into any SOE game, beware. The community is the low point by far. SOE forums are known for laughing over the deaths of pets and even players. Recently when a player of planetside had a brain hemmorage and died, the customers thought it the funniest thing in the world. You would be horrified to hear their position on the death of a pet.

And that is usually the problem with SOE products. Although they have the technology and the financial resources to back up creation of top of the line products, they continue to fall far short in customer service and community management. In all internet forums there are jerks, the difference is that other forums (such as Atari's Unreal Tournament forum) actually get rid of the filth and manage the forums. The only things that disappear from SOE forums are posts that decrease sales of the product through exposing weaknesses in them.

As for the game itself, it is a great idea and poorly implements. Client side hit detection in the game is a hacker's paradise. Furthermore, the company seems more interested in slowing down the achievement of players than making an enjoyable experience. Their recent expansion, Core Combat, was yet another example of their incompetence.

There are many players in the MMOG industry. The days of the EQ monopoly are over and I suggest you check out their compeditors instead.

Great Game with even greater potential!

I have recently been accepted to the Beta Testing of Planetside and it is a phenomenal game with a lot of capabilities that will be exercised in the future. The way teams have to work together in order to accomplish missions is great and the various array of character types and vehicles makes this a must for MMO fans. I am not particularly fond of first person shooters, but I love this game nonetheless. The only draw back are its pretty powerful system requirements and there is still some tweaking and balancing that needs to happen, but thats what Beta is for. Any MMO fan will love this game.

PlanetSide: Probably the most spectacular game of its kind

Planetside is one of those games that you cannot get enough of! I recently purchased it here, Amazon.com, and I cannot wait until it arrives. The anticipation is killing me. I read up on this game before I bought it and its really cool. Bolt Driver for sniping(my specialty)and heavy asssault weapons for the MAX units. What more could you ask for?! But there are always flaws, such as the complicated certification and implant system. I was so confused at this but as I read more and more it became clear to me. Go out and buy it, I think its worth all the money spent.

Caveat Emptor

Buyer Beware. If you have the right system and connection, this game rocks.

DO NOT buy this game unless you have at least a GeForce 3 64mb graphics card and 768 mb RAM. If you don't know for sure that your system meets those specs, then it probably doesn't.

Also: this game is a multiplayer internet action game. DO NOT play it without DSL or a Cable Modem. You will not enjoy it.

There are some other technical problems but they are not major.

As a beta tester, I did enjoy playing the hundreds of different roles and trying to master them. However because of the persistent lagging problems (the game's framerate studders because of the server), I prefered to take it stealthwise/engineer and don a cloaking suit. Battles can be massive (remember they CAN, not always though), literally hundreds of people on both sides trying to capture a base.

In one moment, I and a few others grabed a Galaxy (an air dropship) and flew over the base to drop in from above. Our squad hacked the facility in minutes, then took out oncoming enemies, as they tried to retake the facility. Snipers took potshots at my squadmembers as we tried in vain to keep the base under our control.

Indeed this is a great game, however as I began to play more and more, I found that most of the time was spent in three ways, 1.) Forming a squad, trying to get enough members to create a decent fighting force, 2.)Traveling between Base A and Base B (The bases are all generic, another shortfall of the game is they have basically few differences eachother, making the game feel very "deja vu"-ish) and 3.) Waiting to capture a base (After you hack a facility, you wait around for 14:00 Min before you can move to another base).

Sure, you can play different roles in a squad. A sniper, a pilot, a cloaker, but the game lacks drive. You'll find yourself usually stuck on a few select worlds (the terrain makes little difference, its all purely cosmetic), and you'll end up trying to capture the same base over and over and over again.

Sadly this is a game that makes you wait. And to buy this game ...might seem worth it at the time, but the ... monthly fee [seems a bit much].(The [cost] includes other games made by Sony, such as everquest, but for a single game it ain't worth it). Additionally Sony and Retail Stores don't mention whether the first month is free, so assume that you're gonna be shelling out ... bucks to see if this game is any good.

I might wait to see if they make any improvements in a month or so, becuase they will be making changes and additions. Until then, this game gets a mediocre 3 stars. :(

Save your money

I went out and bought this game the first day it came out, and I'm regretting it already, for many many reasons. First off, this game is VERY unstable. I have a system that exceeds the required system apecifications, and the game crashes almost every time I try to enter a new continent besides the Sanctuary. There have been many many times when I have spent quite a while trying to find a squad only to lose it when the game crashed to my desktop and refused to load again without a restart. Secondly, the support is horrible. If you go to the support website and search for your problem, you will either come across one of their Everquest solutions, or (in my opinion) solutions to questions that they think will sell the game, such as "What is Planetside like?" Yes, that question is really in their "support" area. It really doesn't seem to me like the game was ready to be released at all. It's such a simple but wonderful idea, and the producers have done such an impressively awful job on it. So, my suggestion, do yourself the favor I wish I would have done myself and stay well clear of this game, for a little while at least. They might get their problems fixed, but if not before my one free month is up, I'm out and my Planetside CD's will be retired to my 'other' CD case.

Unbearable Lag at times but very fun

Let's start off by saying that this game is a ton of fun. The bad part, and it can get very bad...is that this game is VERY laggy. I have a high end system and I can't enjoy the luxary of cranking up the graphics. IMO this game is not playable as promised. It is not up to par. It will be once they address this lag issue. Until then...
