Great game!

Never before has a game captured my attention the way PlanetSide has. Right from the beginning as a Beta tester, I did the stupidest (but most fun) option in the game. I jumped right into the action and 'Instant Actioned' righ into a hot spot and was killed about 15 times before realizing what I had to do.

But, the intense level of excitement and adrenaline that you experience in your first few battles keeps you coming back for more and more and more and more. . . .

Thankfully this game comes out after school gets out or Sony would be lining up with lawsuits for causing many people from failing their classes. Honestly, the only thing you want to do when you get out of class, is play PlanetSide, join a squad and then get your Phoenix missle launcher and take out some Maxes and Reavers that are trying to infiltrate your base.

Lots of fun but I recommend having a lot of memory (pref 1024 MB) for virtually no latency (lag). Be careful! Your girlfriend and pet may leave you if you get this game!

Seems like an inexperienced staff

Very Pretty. Versatile. It can be fun with friends.
(wait for it) BUT Save your money. Avoid this product.

Support is terrible. The software is buggier then a bait shop. Their forums are littered with people who are unhappy with the product. I'm not as unhappy as most, but it needs a lot of polish, and should not have been released. What really kills it is you see potential for a good game and that is blown with poor implementation. The second star is for just that, it had potential and I want to credit them with that, but the moment there is a problem you are through.

Here are some issues just in the first few days (I'm leaving many out):
Server lag and framerates are bad even with the top of the line machines. Speaking of which you a high end machine to have the game run smoothly. 512k memory and a 128k new video card with updated drivers is a MUST to run it minimal. You want twice that memory to not see constant frame hits (you are warned of this though)

The help files for support don't exist. It actually says *Fill in Technical Support phone numbers and such here* if you click through the game help to the tech support area. If you do call their TS phone number (long distance), they then tell you how to ask for help in game...the game you bought... with the faulty manual. Then you have to somehow get the attention of a in game help person --- which is to say challenging at the very least.

Large numbers of people are unable to get the game going, or are having problems with it. They are in their second or third day waiting for help or responses from Tech Support people. To be honest I think this is a combination of; a poor not ready for release software with a manual that contradicts some of the gameplay aspects, a swamped under manned support staff that is getting frustrated.

The game mechanic for experience was changed just before release. It in no way resembles any of the published or advertised ways it should be when evaluating the product. What's more there seems to be issues with it saving your character properly at intervals. Sometimes you will find the hard fighting of the last 20 minutes for a base capture lost because there was a save problem.

Most bugs or problems just plain lock the game up and out. You cannot progress to even see where you need help or to give this information to a tech support person. Most responses are that you basically have to uninstall and re-install this cd collection anytime you have a technical issue.

If this is the way their support is at it's peak when the product is just released, under scrutiny and all hands are on deck. I would hate to see what it is like a few months down the road.

Server Lag

Planetside is an amazing game with great groundbreaking ideas that will hopefully lead gaming by leaps and bounds to a new level.

There are reasons why, though, that the reviews are divided. There are the people who love it, and the people who don't like it (and all those in-between):
For some people, gaming for one goal (world domination) is extremely fun, and constantly taking back bases and capturing new ones doesn't get repetitive for them as battles are almost always unique in their own right.
Then there are others who grow quickly bored of doing the same thing over and over again.

There are also reasons for the reported lag. Being a fan of MMO games, I know that when a new expansion is released, such as the Legacy of Ykesha, the first downloadable expansion for EverQuest, there was a definite new height to the lag. Server hiccups, so-to-speak. That is where mass people get disconnected at the same time. This is probably the case for PS, though, instead of a new expansion coming out, there are hundreds of people signing up and logging on for the first time, causing the servers to get stressed out.

I agree that the monthly price for PS is too high, though it will probably drop down over time. However, with the steep monthly price, we are almost guaranteed constant updates for bugs fixes and new material. I do not believe that Sony Online will fall asleep on us.

>> Expect lag to die down dramatically.
>> Expect constant updates.

But it wont happen over night, and it will take a bit.
A suggestion if you want to be careful: I would wait for the price to drop for PS and watch specific PS gaming sites ... for updates on how the game is progressing ...

I purchased this game about a month after it came out, the community was suprisingly large and the graphics were not bad at all for its time. Although this game has online fees, the results are amazing, the first person MMO idea was a great one.
I would recommend this game to you if you don't mind spending a little cash to go online with it.

Planetside, the Only Online Game I Play

I bought Planetside through a friend that happened to get a second copy of it by mistake. I really didn't know what it was but after I strated playing, I couldn't stop. I mean it's very stright forward gameplay. Take over each others land. Yet, you just can't seem to log off. Aside from having to pay 13 bucks a month for a subscription, its worth it. Never had problems, servers are usually up, can't ask for much more. I'd go to the website and read more about the game before you buy.

I have seen the title quote in regards to PlanetSide before, and it definitely holds true. I quit the game a year ago, because I was too busy at the time to play ANY video games. Then I found out about the PlanetSide Reserves program, which is a great idea (free play with limited rank) and joined back up. Of course, I had to re-subscribe :)

The game play is, if anything, even better than when I left. Bugs 99.5% gone, server support at all times, and a (for the most part) friendly and well polished social structure contribute to getting into the action fast, no strings attached (unless you want the more in-depth Outfit take on things) Balance has been achieved overall IMO, and that includes the BFR's, who still bring a dominating role to the battlefield, yet can be dealt with fairly easily at times, which makes battle dynamic.

Now, the new Combat Engineer deployables have arrived, and I got my first taste of them already, and so far I think it's a great new twist on gameplay. Battles have been chaotic, inventive and fun, and lend themselves to intelligent gameplay rather than zerg, though of course, zerg will always have its place. I did note that aircraft seemed to be having a tough time adapting to the added threat of a new AA mini-turret, and the additional beefing up of base turrets with selectable AA/AV as well.

I don't write reviews often, but I wanted to give PlanetSide a fresh review from a fan, because players of PS are a very loyal group dedicated to the game and to the infusion of new players. I would hope if you've played PlanetSide before that you play again, and if you've never experienced PS, you should do yourself a favor and try it. Be forewarned that there is a steep learning curve, and that's no joke, but if you want to participate in one of the best gaming experiences ever, you should expect the mode of interaction to be complicated, and the competition experienced.
Send 7horus7 a tell on Markov if you read this review. If I'm not busy sniping someone, I'll say hello. :)

5 stars for fun because it is that fun. I don't grind, I just play.
4 stars overall because no game is perfect, but they don't give half-stars on Amazon, and this would be 4 and half.

PlanetSide- A new era of online gaming

Although this game has not been released yet, i have been following it since 2001.

This game is amazing, and if it works, will be the first [really big, talking in thousands of players on a single server] MMOFPS.

The graphics are great, there are many weapons too chose from. There are many vehicles, including a drop ship, buggies, quad-bikes, and hover vehicles.

Character customisation makes this game so unique. Anything imaginable can be made here. You want to be a Stealth-Engineer? Have fun. You want to be a pilot + a medic, go ahead. There are many different types of characters, ranging from pilot to a mech sort of character (referred to as a MAX armor)

Now lets talk about the story. You can choose to be one of three emipres (Vanu Sovereignty, New Conglomerate, Terran Republic). There is a planet called Auraxis, and the humans went to explore it. The wormhole they traveled through to get there closed up on them while they were there, and so now there stuck on Auraxis. People got angry, etc., etc., and now you have three factions staring down each other's throats. The Vanu are all for technology and how the human race is imperfect, and throught alien technology, can be made perfect. The NC are for a sort of... blow the sh|t out of everything you come across and the TR and just old fashioned. Hope that helps, I'd right more but I'd exceed 1,000.

Its still in testing mode right now but what i have played has been a wonderful experiance. with crazy graphics, great gameplay, and insane battles. The Fun part is creating squads, every kill they get you get experiance also. In other words this game is awsome. Go get it when it comes out and join my squad.

To the person that said this was a poor MMORPG, it is NOT an RPG.

This game is an MMOFPS, Massivley Multiplayer Online First person Shooter.

Beta is ok, needs a lot more goals though if its going to last, taking a base one day and then having to take it again the next just gets very tiring.

If you like Tribes, then get this you will love it...

Enjoy shooting people? This ones for you

Note: I was and am a beta tester for this game as well. If you are a big fan of Everquest, or other MMORPGs, then you need to move on to SWG or wait for EQ2. The squakers about this game are mostly those that come from RPG backgrounds, not those that come from Counterstrike and other FPS backgrounds. If you enjoy the online version of first person shooters, but get tired of the limited number of maps, small map size and limits to the size of your team then this is a great game for you. Plus you dont have to worry about the quality of the server hosting your game. Sony takes care of it! And for that you get the chance to battle with thousands, have a wide variety of weapons, vehicles and skirmishes. There are the naysayers, but it seems like you cant make everyone one happy, and some people will never be happy. Buy the game, sign up and start shooting people... oh and join a squad!
