Planetside is a welcome addition to the already long list of massively-multiplayer online games. It's refreshing to see an FPS game of this kind, and I can't wait to see how it will turn out without the often frustrating dynamics of an MMORPG.

What can I say? This game is being developed by the same producer of Tribes 2 - and it does follow a similar theme. The fact that it's an MMO, and not the traditional *user* server based game, sealed the deal for me.

I do look forward to seeing how they will combat lag issues, however. If this game is a *laggy* game, considered the amount of PvP involved, I won't pay a cent.

Although this game has not been released yet, i have been following it since 2001.

This game is amazing, and if it works, will be the first [really big, talking in thousands of players on a single server] MMOFPS.

The graphics are great, there are many weapons too chose from. There are many vehicles, including a drop ship, buggies, quad-bikes, and hover vehicles.

Character customisation makes this game so unique. Anything imaginable can be made here. You want to be a Stealth-Engineer? Have fun. You want to be a pilot + a medic, go ahead. There are many different types of characters, ranging from pilot to a mech sort of character (referred to as a MAX armor)

Now lets talk about the story. You can choose to be one of three emipres (Vanu Sovereignty, New Conglomerate, Terran Republic). There is a planet called Auraxis, and the humans went to explore it. The wormhole they traveled through to get there closed up on them while they were there, and so now there stuck on Auraxis. People got angry, etc., etc., and now you have three factions staring down each other's throats. The Vanu are all for technology and how the human race is imperfect, and throught alien technology, can be made perfect. The NC are for a sort of... blow the sh|t out of everything you come across and the TR and just old fashioned. Hope that helps, I'd right more but I'd exceed 1,000.

Hey Everyone,

Snappy here, as I am known in the gaming world ;-)

Like many of the other reviewers here I have been following this game for some time now. I was lucky enough to get into the open beta and have played the game several times now.

The action can be real fun, and considering this is still beta I am getting the feeling that this game will succeed where others have failed (ww2 online ....).

Being able to create a player that grows with battle experiance ... being able to do so much with the game world... being able to play on a very stratigic level... all of these things should make for one hella great game...

Great Game with even greater potential!

I have recently been accepted to the Beta Testing of Planetside and it is a phenomenal game with a lot of capabilities that will be exercised in the future. The way teams have to work together in order to accomplish missions is great and the various array of character types and vehicles makes this a must for MMO fans. I am not particularly fond of first person shooters, but I love this game nonetheless. The only draw back are its pretty powerful system requirements and there is still some tweaking and balancing that needs to happen, but thats what Beta is for. Any MMO fan will love this game.

Most Fun I have had in a wile

First off im gonna tell you that im a beta tester for PS, unlike all these other people i have actully played the game. Its still in testing mode right now but what i have played has been a wonderful experiance. with crazy graphics, great gameplay, and insane battles. The Fun part is creating squads, every kill they get you get experiance also. In other words this game is awsome. Go get it when it comes out and join my squad.

PS will raise your heart rate!

I had the good fortune of being invited into the PS open beta, and I have to say I'm impressed. I'm actually not a huge fan of FPS games, but the strategy and, more importantly, the *tension* that PS brings to the table makes it a real heart-pounder.

The other evening I was caught in a massive battle for control of a strategic bridge. I snuck around to flank our opposition and try to disrupt their troop supply a little, and was truly amazed at the site: literally hundreds of them streaming along the roads and over hills. My jaw dropped at the sight of it, and heart sank as I realized how unstoppable the enemy numbers were. And not only were we outnumbered at least 2 to 1, but I was deep in their territory now, completely surrounded, and praying nobody noticed the shimmer of my stealth suit moving among the trees for cover. Once in a while someone would catch a glimse of me out of the corner of their eye and turn - I could only freeze and wait while their gun barrel swept back and forth over where I was standing cloaked, hoping they wouldn't pull the trigger.

We sent word out, begging for reinforcements, but half our forces were busy battling the other enemy empire far away on another continent. We had to hold out as long as we could with what we had. (we lost the bridge eventually, but made our attackers earn every last inch of it, fighting until we were backed into a single basement room in a nearby watch tower)

Planetside has many different roles to fill, and can accomodate both squad and, to some degree, solo play as well (I particularly enjoy covert work behind enemy lines). It actually has a similar overall feel (but a much larger scope, and better graphics) as Sony's 2D, isometric view, online game 'Infantry' (which you can play a limited version for free at station.sony.com), so if you've played that, you'll have a good idea of why PS is so fun. Everyone has a job (or jobs, depending on which, and how many certifications you rack up): light/med/heavy assault, driver/pilot, engineer, medic, infiltrator/hacker. All are lethal on their own, and a force to be reconed with when they're all together and in capable hands.

The Beta was nice, but...

I too was able to be a part of the beta for Planetside. It is with heavy heart, though, that I say the game is good but not worth the money they are going to charge for it.

... It is a very refreshing break from the standard MPORG, but it is missing elements that make MPORGs great:

1. There are no specializations. In less that three playing sessions you can have all of one specialization. In a fantasy game I would compare it to choosing to be a wizard and only being able to get a Fireball and Heal spell. By the time you actually get a month behind you will have every certification (you have to certify in something before you can use it - be it weapon or vehicle).

2. Since the three different factions are facing each other you would think that someone could actually win the game. Well, that assumption is wrong. No one can ever win... so what is the point? You just keep taking the same base over and over again.

This is a very nice game and it deserves much kudos for breaking into new ground. It would be well worth playing if it was $5 or $7 bucks a month, but at $13 a month it just isn't worth my money.

So...

The Beta was nice, but...

To the person that said this was a poor MMORPG, it is NOT an RPG.

This game is an MMOFPS, Massivley Multiplayer Online First person Shooter.

Beta is ok, needs a lot more goals though if its going to last, taking a base one day and then having to take it again the next just gets very tiring.

If you like Tribes, then get this you will love it...
