Awesome Game

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 4
Date: October 28, 2003
Author: Amazon User

Okay, first of all the game is awesome, but I gave it only 4 stars because the graphics are not top-notch but good.

Gameplay:
Gameplay is alot of fun, although it can get annoying the first couple of times you play the game because without any upgrades it takes along time to get around. The unique upgrade system alows you to upgrade your character, and get access to new weapons and vehicles.

Performance:
I have a (decent) cable interent connection and the game runs great with no lag. The computers perfomance is great also, make sure you have at least 1 gig of ram if you want to run the game of full detail though. (512mb is playable, but have to keep graphics down.)

Graphics:
Some of the models are plain, and textures get reused alot. (this is why I gave it only 4 stars, I compare it to newer shooters like MOHAA, or UT2K3)Although, at a decent resolution, and all the goodies turned on, it is a pretty nice looking game.

Playability:
What can I say, if you have played FPS games before you will be fine, the learning curve is very easy with very few extra buttons to memorize.

Sound:
Aint nothin' like a missle flying by you in surround sound. The game sounds beautiful.

Overview: The game holds it own in all respects with new enhancements and auto-updates often, so the game runs/plays/and looks great. The action in the battles is intense, and the squad based action also adds a cool new twist to the game.So if you can tackle the monthly payments, and have a computer that that can handle it, (most important being amount of ram) this is definitely a game to check out.

I've been conned

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 4 / 7

I've been playing Planetside for a while now - and I really feel as if I've been conned, sucked in by the marketing and spat out when I've paid my subscription.

I'm lucky enough to have a machine powerful enough and up-to-date enough to run Planetside smoothly and without any problems so my issues are not with performance. My issues are with the game-play itself.

You're promised enormous battles with thousands of other online players - but these never happen - you get a few dozen in the scrum at most.

And what is the point of fighting anyway? You get involved in a battle to take an installation only to find that the next time you logon - it's been taken back buy one of the other empires. So why did you bother?

You can never make a difference to your empire's influence on the world and you can't advance your own avatar into someone who can. So you'll always be a grunt in an army of grunts.

There is no sense of satisfaction of playing Planetside. You fight. You gain a bit of ground. You die. You re-spawn. You fight for the same bit of ground. Ad infinitum. Oh, and Sony charge for the privilege too.

I've been conned. Clever Sony. Stupid me.

Planetside is the Ultimate experience.

This game can be criticized in many ways but that what happens to a game ahead of it's time. The graphics are superb and the game play simple and enjoyable.

As in all online games you get out of them what you put into them. Playing on a squad linked together by TeamSpeak is an exhilirating experience. If you play solo well it can get boring.

As in last generation game the proper hardware is necessary. Memory and a fast Video card along with a good connection is a must. If you want detail in your images alot information is bouncing around your PC.

I played this game solo and in a top ranking outfit and never regreted buying this game and paying it's monthly fee. It was well worth it.

I would keep an eye on this product as it will continue to evolve.

Same ... Different Base

SSDB (Same ... Different Base)

That's how I feel about the game, as it went live. I played the game in open beta for 2 weeks. At first, the fun and exhiliration of actually battling it out with thousands of people online was addicting. Then realization came that I won't ever get to see more then a 100 people on-screen, and at most a couple hundred battling it out near one area (happened one time for me).

But big battles aren't easy to find. Most of the time, you'll arrive at base with little or no resistance. From forming a squad to capturing enemy held base, you will have spent an hour doing basically nothing. The core gameplay is at issue here. Regardless of which certifications you choose, it all boils down to capturing base. There's no other way of accomplishing anything in this game. I mean other MMO's will give you quest to fulfill, you can just randomly go and kill enemies in the 'wild'...in Planetside, with the experience system as it is, if you're not in or around a base, you're not getting much exp.

They can pretty up the game all they want, but as long as the core gameplay focuses on base capture, Planetside will ALWAYS be SSDB.

Now on to the good side...the developers are very quick in listening to their players. Changes are always planned, and unlike other MMO's, I feel very confident the PS dev team will do everything in their power to make changes the fans are clamoring for (when's night-time feature coming up, dammit!). The game is, for what it is, very stable. Drops were uncommon even in beta, and with the netcode 56K and Cable Modem users both are at even ground (it does nerf the Broadband user a bit to accomplish this, but what the hey).

Most importantly, I strongly feel this game can be golden. Even with all the negatives, this game has obvious potential. For that, I will put in an extra star for the review.

Damn Fine Game

I read a lot of reviews bashing Planetside and I haev to say that swayed my opinion not to buy it. However, my roomate bought it and I saw him playing and it piqued my interest, so he gave me the free 7 day trial that comes with the game. I have been playing for the past 6 days and I am absolutly hooked now. I don't experience this lag everyone is speaking of even when me and my roomate are playing at teh same time off of a cable modem. Some things aren't the best, but they are improving the game rapidly through updates. Also, to know that there is battle of hundred on hundred and you don't have to worry about a full server or a server going down or any other nonsense equated with every other MP FPS, it's well worth the $$.

Tap the potential!

People say it's lousy. People say it lags. But do they talk about the real time wheather, cool guns (triple barrel shotgun, people!) and excellent squad based combat? Nope. I have 56k and a 800 mhz processor and it works great on my PC! You can become litterally anything you want: a daring Assault troop, deadly sniper, or just a guy who shoots up things with a gun. Your choice. And the lag? Almost none on my AVERAGE system. Just beware of phone calls. They mess you up. But for you who don't have call problems, and have a fancy for carnage, action, and teamwork, this is a great game for you!

The Beta was nice, but...

I too was able to be a part of the beta for Planetside. It is with heavy heart, though, that I say the game is good but not worth the money they are going to charge for it.

... It is a very refreshing break from the standard MPORG, but it is missing elements that make MPORGs great:

1. There are no specializations. In less that three playing sessions you can have all of one specialization. In a fantasy game I would compare it to choosing to be a wizard and only being able to get a Fireball and Heal spell. By the time you actually get a month behind you will have every certification (you have to certify in something before you can use it - be it weapon or vehicle).

2. Since the three different factions are facing each other you would think that someone could actually win the game. Well, that assumption is wrong. No one can ever win... so what is the point? You just keep taking the same base over and over again.

This is a very nice game and it deserves much kudos for breaking into new ground. It would be well worth playing if it was $5 or $7 bucks a month, but at $13 a month it just isn't worth my money.

So...

The Beta was nice, but...

Best FPS ever, not so good MMP

PlanetSide is the best FPS I have ever played. It has good graphics, better then Halo but worse then Quake III. It has great action and gameplay. I can easily spend hours defending a base, attacking bases, or ninja hacking. The sound is excellent. In fact sometimes I listen to the mp3 files when I'm not playing.

It has a ton of equipment. Several vehicles, some of which fly. They also have several roles that any players can take.

Battle Rank only effects how much equipment you can use, which I think is a good thing.

My big issue with the game is the cost. I think it should be $5 a month. As it is now it is far too expensive, especially with expansion packs.

The main reason I disagree with the monthly cost is the lack of added content in a month. Sure, it costs money to keep the servers running, but not that much. Blizzard keeps RTS and RPG servers running for free and they both store more data then PlanetSide.

I give it a 4 out of 10.

Great potential, poor implementation

Unfortunately, It seems that SOE's untarnished reputation is about to take a hit.

Plansetside is a flop. What could have been the greatest game in years, isn't. Gameplay problems have left many beta testers bored of the game after only a week or two of play.

One positive note is the game's MMO nature. A few heavy patches and this game could become much better... in six months.

Great game if u have the RAM

This game is an absolute blast. Outstanding gfx and tons of action. But be warned, you will need a ton of ram and a good internet connection to enjoy the game. At 256mb the game was nearly unplayable. I upped to 768 and it runs beautifully now.
