I have seen the title quote in regards to PlanetSide before, and it definitely holds true. I quit the game a year ago, because I was too busy at the time to play ANY video games. Then I found out about the PlanetSide Reserves program, which is a great idea (free play with limited rank) and joined back up. Of course, I had to re-subscribe :)
The game play is, if anything, even better than when I left. Bugs 99.5% gone, server support at all times, and a (for the most part) friendly and well polished social structure contribute to getting into the action fast, no strings attached (unless you want the more in-depth Outfit take on things) Balance has been achieved overall IMO, and that includes the BFR's, who still bring a dominating role to the battlefield, yet can be dealt with fairly easily at times, which makes battle dynamic.
Now, the new Combat Engineer deployables have arrived, and I got my first taste of them already, and so far I think it's a great new twist on gameplay. Battles have been chaotic, inventive and fun, and lend themselves to intelligent gameplay rather than zerg, though of course, zerg will always have its place. I did note that aircraft seemed to be having a tough time adapting to the added threat of a new AA mini-turret, and the additional beefing up of base turrets with selectable AA/AV as well.
I don't write reviews often, but I wanted to give PlanetSide a fresh review from a fan, because players of PS are a very loyal group dedicated to the game and to the infusion of new players. I would hope if you've played PlanetSide before that you play again, and if you've never experienced PS, you should do yourself a favor and try it. Be forewarned that there is a steep learning curve, and that's no joke, but if you want to participate in one of the best gaming experiences ever, you should expect the mode of interaction to be complicated, and the competition experienced.
Send 7horus7 a tell on Markov if you read this review. If I'm not busy sniping someone, I'll say hello. :)
5 stars for fun because it is that fun. I don't grind, I just play.
4 stars overall because no game is perfect, but they don't give half-stars on Amazon, and this would be 4 and half.

I bought Planetside through a friend that happened to get a second copy of it by mistake. I really didn't know what it was but after I strated playing, I couldn't stop. I mean it's very stright forward gameplay. Take over each others land. Yet, you just can't seem to log off. Aside from having to pay 13 bucks a month for a subscription, its worth it. Never had problems, servers are usually up, can't ask for much more. I'd go to the website and read more about the game before you buy.

I purchased this game about a month after it came out, the community was suprisingly large and the graphics were not bad at all for its time. Although this game has online fees, the results are amazing, the first person MMO idea was a great one.
I would recommend this game to you if you don't mind spending a little cash to go online with it.

Planetside for the PC is first person shooter where you wage war for territory and enemy bases in futuristic alien worlds. Planetside can ONLY be played online; there is no offline mode. No practice mode offline either and this is really disappointing. Then you need to pay a game fee! If you bought this game retail it comes with a 30 days free play, after that you have to pay a subscription fee ($12/month) if you wish to continue playing! Planetside is not for the casual gamer, because the game offers so many options: you can be a medic, engineer, pilot, assault soldier, heavy assualt, sniper, spy and more! You can choose from three different factions and they all of similar soldier types but feel a bit different. You'll be shooting with weapons found in most FPS like the shotguns, rocket launcher, machine guns, pistols, sniper rifle, energy weapons and some neat gadgets. The alien worlds (earth-like) are humongus! Even your base is huge and is easy to get yourself lost and confused. Running on foot takes forever, so you need to ride vehicles to travel faster to battles. If you don't have a vehicles you can ride a shuttle which arrives every 5 minutes! or use a warp gate. The battles are very awesome seeing 50+ players having a real war: lasers, bullets and missles flying everywhere! The real problem begins with "LAG", even if you have a powerful PC with cable internet, it LAGS like heck! Then there is game crashes...this game is so glitchy and full of bugs that they keep making the game crash (even with patches)! Lastly, the game feels repeatative because the battles NEVER end! When you take over an enemy base you are then supposed to defend it and then the enemy comes after you! There is NO ending, no victory screen or FMV, no stats to give you satisfaction. So after a short while the never-ending battles seem pointless: completely ruining the game experience.
Pros:
+tons of options
+cools weapons
+excellent graphics
+excellent sound effects
+excellent music
+huge battles
+huge worlds
Cons:
-no offline gameplay
-no single player game mode
-tons of game crashes
-tons of strange glitches
-tons of LAG
-waiting 5 mintues to ride a shuttle
-easy to get lost
-complicated interface
-battles never end
-game becomes pointless
-paying $12 a month to
play a glitchy, crash-happy game

Don't buy Planetside USED if you want to play it.
Sony Station will only allow a software key to be used once and will not give out another. This happened to me and after speaking to customer support, all I could do was buy a new version. Buyer beware!
Absolutely the Best MMORPG !!!

Words cannot describe the fun you will have playing this awesome game. You can be one of 3 groups of thought. The New Conglomerate, the Vanu and the Terian. Each have multi-weapons,multi-vechs and multi- other characteristic both common, and unique for each group.
The are 10 continents....huge..vase. Each continent has numerous Facilities that you or your Squad or Outfit can capture.
Consequently, everytime log off, then back on,depending on how long you have played, the Continent Ownership could be completley different. Maybe the Vanu,or Teran own the continent and Facilities now.
As you accomplish you missions, you get BEP (Battle Experence) or CEP (Command Experience) which gets you Certification Points to purchase expertise in a multitude of disciplines...like Assault,Heavy Assault,AirSupport,Ground Support etc....
You can have up to 4 Characters each specilazied to do particular things...
Get this game!!! You willnot stop playing it once you do.
Each time you play the game you can have a completely different experience.

It is the only MMO that hasn't disappointed me. When it first came out it had a few problems but they have been fixed. Lots of fun shooting with tons of guns and vehicles. As well as a huge world.
Under pain of lag and inexplainably high ping time.

Most people know that mass multiplayer onlines are for only those who possess high speed internet and have high end computers. What you don't know is: I have cable internet and this game is still laggy enough to make me scream.
Lag is especially painfull for a first person shooter. Imagine you are fighting one on one with a dangerous opponent, when all of the sudden you character freezes for seconds at a time in a substance known only as 'lag'. Your opponent, however, is not, and proceeds to blow your frozen character to smithereens. Not only that but the game suffers from a pluthera of unbearably long load times and a multitude of crashes in between. If its not bad enough to have a frame rate of one every five minutes, you also have to stand a loading time of another ten minutes, and then the game just loves to crash right about then. Don't get me wrong, this game probably works on supercomputers connected to the internet with high speed cables as thick as trees, but I wouldn't know, I'm not made of money. If your computer and internet combined cost you more than someones house, then you probably have a high end enough computer for this game. Otherwise, it will leave you pulling your hair out in frustration.
Planetside is the Ultimate experience.

This game can be criticized in many ways but that what happens to a game ahead of it's time. The graphics are superb and the game play simple and enjoyable.
As in all online games you get out of them what you put into them. Playing on a squad linked together by TeamSpeak is an exhilirating experience. If you play solo well it can get boring.
As in last generation game the proper hardware is necessary. Memory and a fast Video card along with a good connection is a must. If you want detail in your images alot information is bouncing around your PC.
I played this game solo and in a top ranking outfit and never regreted buying this game and paying it's monthly fee. It was well worth it.
I would keep an eye on this product as it will continue to evolve.

I have been playing PlanetSide for a year now.
Obviously I like it. I used to play RTS games.
This game has some RTS and some FPS elements.
Best thing are the pretty environment
(i switch flowers on) and the big battles.
PlanetSide is a wargame. Three Empires fight
for 100 bases. Each Empire has thousands of
soldiers. Each soldier is a person sitting
behind a computer just like you.
You dont have to be a good shooter to be
able to play this game. If you are not a
very good shooter, you can still lay mines,
transport people, be a medic, repair the
base wall turrets, drive a mobile base, etc.
Usually I am a sniper or drive a mini tank.
A month ago I was an outfit leader (General)
of 160 people. It seemed just a tough a job
as running a small country.
So I am back to grunting...
Its hard to coordinate things like fighter
wings, tank squads or multiple transports
dropping paratroopers at the same time.
It takes practice. Usually these are
prepared a week in advance. That means
getting to know the other people.
But when this happens, to me the game shines.
So for most the game ususally ends up
as a zerg: hundreds of people (troops,
air, tanks) storming a base defended
by hundreds of other people, each
person doing his own thing. Which is
not bad, since that is like a normal
FPS with 30 times the number of players.
