World Series Baseball 2k1 Can Make a Grown Man Cry

Baseball has always been my favorite video game genre. After waiting for six months with many delays, I was psyched up for this game to say the least. Upon finally getting the game and booting it up, allthough I tried to fight it, WSB2K1 STINKS. Read my lips folks; THIS GAME HAS NO USER FIELDING! Eight bit Nintendo baseball games (and Sega Master System for that matter) had it. Thats right. Fly ball to left center. What do you do? Press right on the directional making sure the center fielder's activated? Nope. You watch and hope. This alone is inexcusable. If everything else about the game was perfect, this alone makes the game unplayable to me. But I'll go on anyway. When said fly bal is hit to center. The outfielders ignore the ball for a good 5 seconds. It gets worse. When the computer team steals second, the catcher runs in slow motion forward for 5 seconds before throwing the ball, the runner is safe but it's laughably always a close play. The announcing is Super Nintendo quality. Instant replays are random. You can't bring them up yourself and when they do come up, for example they show the baserunner and not where the ball was hit. Theres a lot of good stuff but with the no fielding, pretty and accurate graphics don't mean a thing . This is supposed to be a game. Remember? Yes if Sega had decided to cancel wsb2k1 till next year cause they couldn't get it right in time, I would have been upset. But that's what they should have done.

Don't waste you time, get Virtua Tennis instead!

This is a perfect example of a game that was rushed in the final months of its creation. The graphics are OK, but they fall far short when compared to the other Sega Sports games for the DC. The Pitching/Hitting control looks like a good idea, if it weren't so hideously slow (and shouldn't a 90 MPH pitch LOOK faster than one that's 60MPH?) The unforgivable feature of this game, however, is the substandard fielding feature. It's true; YOU CAN NOT CONTROL THE FIELDING, only where they throw to and even that doesn't work half the time. Two prime examples of how lousy this game is: 1) The first baseman will usually only run to cover first when the ball is hit. HE WILL NOT EVEN TRY TO PICK IT UP IF IT BOUNCES RIGHT TO HIM. 2) Twice in the 6 innings that I played this thing a chopper was hit to the pitcher. Would you believe that he could not throw out the batter in time? This game gets -10 stars in my opinion.

Huh?

This is by far the biggest let down in all of video game sports history. I dont understand how this game made it to the streets. The game is in no way playable. I feel like Sega beat me out of 50 dollars and I deserve that back with an apology. I played it for two innings and refuse to even touch it again. Not being able to play defense is enough never to play the game but in two innings at least 20 flaws were apparent. I am disgusted and recommend Sega pulling of the shelves and apologizing to everyone.

Dissapointing to say the least.

AS all the other reviews have said you can't control the defense. You control where they throw the ball but fielding ground balls and pop ups is done by the dreamcast. This leaves no exciting diving catches or robbed homeruns. Also the outfielders in the game are pathetic. There are more bloop base hits in this game than in any other games combined. Plus all throuws from the outfield are thrown like rainbows high slow floating things. Then when you do throw into a base there are no sweep tags, there are slow two handed tags leaving many runners safe even if the ball arrives much earlier. The pitcher is your best defender. He makes jumping catches and all kinds of spin moves to throw runners out (automatically of course). The automatic defense isnt even that good. You will hit a grounder to the right side of the third basemen and he will dive left. I will say that the pitching is high control and well done. Hitting is another story. It is very well done. You release the R trigger to swing making it difficult to time the swing. This makes it very challenging but will all kinds of handicaps and difficulty options you can handle it. It takes a while to learn but it is a lot of fun when you do. True there is no Home run derby, no playoff mode, and no bull pen but the graphics are amazing except for the fans. Don't buy it because not being able to play defense is just ridiculous. What a idiotic terrible job by Sega. And don't rent it either because it takes at least that amount of time to learn how to hit. 2 out of 5 because of graphics.

it could have been so much better

Well, what can i say i had such high hopes for this game i guess i set myself up for a let down the there are many good points in this game but ill get to those in a second. the game seems to cheat more times than actually winning since you cant control your fielders there are to many routine plays botched by the bad ai at one time my fielder waited and let the ball hit the ground before he moved and once he did he wouldnt throw the ball allowing the computer to score easilly when the runner would have been out by a mile if he threw the ball at the right time or when my second basement runs all the way to first to field a ground ball and when he gets the ball wont throw it at all. also most season games seem to be pre-determined the computer eill get singles until they score several runs and then wont score anymore until you catch up then on comes the rally that you cant do anything about theres also a little too much slow down for my taste. the few good points such as the inovative pitching system and beutiful graphics almost save it, close but no cigar unfortunately. even though it had already been delayed too much already it still feels rushed another month or two might have helped but as is stick with the triple play and allstar baseballs this could have been so much better:(

Still the worst baseball game ever....

I gave this game a three-star review a couple days ago, after playing it over the first weekend I had it. Then I thought I'd play some more just to be fair, and hey, I had already spent the money anyway. Let me just say that the people who gave this 5 stars are not concerned with actually PLAYING the game. Take it from me, it only gets more frustrating by the minute... Now it's only worth one star for the graphics. I'm not wasting anymore time with Sega; what a letdown since NFL 2K. I placed an ad for my Dreamcast in the local paper and will wait for PS2. That's right, WSB2K1 has actually driven me over the edge. I'm done.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS GAME.

This game is OK

I have to agree with the other reviewers. Batting is VERY difficult. They put up the strike zone, but then give you no indication of where the pitch is heading until it is past you making it alomost purely a guesing game to try and hit the ball. I can't even tell you how disapointing it is that there is no Home Run Derby (I don't feel like playing a game all the time). The graphics are cool and the stadiums are up to date (including PacBell Park in SF).

Overall, I'm bummed I bought this game.

Very dissappointing

This is easily the worst baseball game I have ever played. This game features diffcult feilding and almost impossible hitting. The graphics are subpar for the dreamcast format. The bottom line is dont buy this game dont even waste your money renting this game!

Best baseball game ever ( at the time it was released)
