Baseball 2K1 Disappoints

Since this is the ONLY baseball game available for Dreamcast and we had to wait until August to get it, I am amazed at the disparity between the best features and stuff missing in the game. While the graphics can be truely spectacular (they got Nomar's batting routine down quite well) and what got the 2nd star, there are action features that have been on other platforms for years, such as fielding, that are missing. My kids old version of Backyard Baseball on a 486 PC doesn't stall as much as the Dreamcast does with this game. The ability to take an extra base, throw out a runner trying to steal and getting the pitch where you want it seem always to be subject to chance when playing with multiple players. On the whole, I wish we had bought a PlayStation last Christmas (they have competing products in this market segment!).

Mixed blessings...

This game certainly offers its share of disappointments, especially when compared to NFL2K or NBA2K. You can't make double-switches. Pitchers don't need rest between games. Too little in the way of statistics. Baserunning can be a huge annoyance, especially during infield pop-ups. The documentation is badly lacking.

All that being said, this is still a thoroughly enjoyable game, mainly thanks to the AI. Batting -- which was so frustrating at first I almost snapped the disk in two -- turns out to offer some sublime pleasures. It's not merely a coordination contest -- you really have to work the count and make guesses about pitches. Pitching can be a lot of fun, allowing you to really work the corners or make a batter look silly with a well-placed fastball.

This is not as polished a product as the other Dreamcast sports titles, but then again, NFL2K is arguably the best sports game ever created. A more-than-decent game, leaving me optimistic for 2K2...

Very Disappointing

Once you get past the awesome graphics, the gameplay on this game is very weak. The true test of a baseball sim is how much it can emulate the technical game of baseball, with all of its intricasies. This game falls short in so many ways it would take me hours to list them all. In a nutshell, the hardcore baseball fan will find this game very disappointing.

I have been looking forward to this release all summer, only to be overwhelmingly disappointed by this game. The graphics are OK, but don't live up to all the hype, and the sound is terrible. Game-play is even worse than terrible...the computer does all the fielding!

I loved NBA2K and thought NHL2K was pretty decent, but this baseball game is no where near as good as those two...save your money and wait for football.

Disappointed

If you are a true baseball enthusist, I think you may be disappointed in this game. If you are only into graphics, you will be pleased. What I am basing this off of is my history with N64 All-Star Baseballs. 2K1 lacks the following in comparison: Lack of control of fielding, minimal graphics, & the inability to strategize your game (pitchouts, directing bunts, etc.) Oh yeah, and if your into replays, forget it unless you are stealing or get a simple base hit (better get a good look at those 475' bombs the first time. I'm glad my friend bought it before I did.

The graphics in the game are quite stunning. But the overall beauty of the graphics can not overcome the lousy gamepaly. First of all there is no way to field manually, the computer does it all for you, so what you end up with is a pretty game of pitch and hit. And for the computer fielding, it usually does a poor job. A hit will go in the direction of a fielder and he will just stand there and watch or he will not start running until a fly ball has already hit the ground. I understand that some people are not interested in the fielding aspect of the game but, I would at least like to have a choice in the matter. Another problem that I found is that there always seems to be a delay with things happening. For example your fielder gets the ball, you press the button for him to throw and there is a second delay before he actually does it. Overall the game is great to look at but the gameplay does not nearly match what EA sports offers now and has in the past. Maybe next years will be better. But for now buy a different baseball game.

Ugh, Sega, what a mess!

Believe all the bad reviews!

Since I've bought this game I've gone 0-15 in season mode (with Boston.) Most of those games I was outscored by at least 10 runs. Mind you, the problem is not a lack of effort on my part, or appreciation for deep gameplay, but rather an almost total lack of control over my players.

The computer is omnipotent, and totally in control of the gameplay (it's and your's.) You have almost no chance of getting an RBI, much less winning. And if you are winning in the last few innings, the gameplay becomes totally contrived and the computer begins to hit the ball over second base again and again. Which wouldn't be a problem except that your second baseman is covering first!

I was up 2-1 in the 6th (computer's favorite turn-around inning) when the other team got 9 doubles through the same gap! And everytime my fielder threw the ball to second and my second baseman tagged the bag, instead of the runner!

Also, about all that great pitching that people are talking about- Why is Pedro out of gas after 40 pitches??? Why is it so hard to throw a strike on the outside of the plate??? Why is the ball movement so choppy???

Take my advice and burn your money instead. It will be less frustrating.

The worst baseball video game I ever played.

The day I opened the game I thought about all the baseball games I have playedand this was going to bbe the best. But I was wrong the controls are horrible. To took me 5 innings to figure out how to swing the bat right. The annoncer bearly even talks. There is almost no music during the game. The best pard is you almost always hit home runs when you bat. But when your pitching you have no idea what type of pithch your thtrowing. The fealding it very hard to do. Im still playing tripple play 2000 for the pc that is way better. So stay away.

It looked soo good at first, What went wrong?

A total waste of time!! Never has a game with such potential and mouth dropping graphics been soo horrible. I got the game thinkin I could get atleast a little enjoyment out of what seemed to be a great game. But as I began to play a little and realized how bad the game really was I started to wonder if it was the same game as shown on the case? But after minutes trying to convince myself that the store had made a mistake packaging, I realized I made the mistake of buying the awful game. No lie here, the worst baseball game to date, hands down. Just take my advice, stay away!

I cant wait till WSB2k2 comes out then will see if the things i listed are changed.
