This game is one of the most fun games I've ever played. My friend bought it and I just had to order it too. You don't even have to like Tennis, think of it like a complicated Pong.
It is not too hard to play but still has depth, literally a perfect balance. Bravo Sega!
Tennis may not rule, but Virtua Tennis does.

When I tell my friends how amazing Virtua Tennis is, I always get the same response. Tennis? How could a tennis game be fun? All you do is hit the ball back and forth right? Well, the fact of the matter is Virtua Tennis is more than just fun. Whether you hate tennis or sports games in general, you will become hopelessly addicted to this game. People who don't even like video games in general still love this game. That's the beauty of it. You can just pick this game up and start having fun with it immediatly. It has amazing graphics, some of the best gameplay that I've ever experienced, and the world circut mode will keep you playing for a long time. On top of that, multi-player is a blast. In my opinion it rivals Bond for the best four player game. If you own a dreamcast, buy this game. If you don't own a dreamcast, wait until the price goes down to 149$ (which will be happening soon) and buy a dreamcast and this game! It is that good. Forget about PS2. You won't find a game this fun on that piece of junk. Dreamcast for life.

well i am a tennisjunkie so i grade this with a lot of detail. there are just 10 topplayers and thats it and women are excluded! the graphics are great but replays are very odd that you cant control and up close the players look like werewolves, for real. gameplay becomes very predictable according to the level you play. also what struck me is the fact that all the players never shank a ball, always clean and almost never out or net.if you dont have a vmu thing to save what you've done, then forget about buying this one. you lose everything you have accomplished. the players dive for balls as often as you would blink your eyes! even if they are way out of reach, they do it anyway and the crowd acts as if it has no clue what is going on. they're just robots. lobs are as annoying as insects in your face. you always miss them and again unfortunately the crowd reacts only when the ball bounces twice when you know for sure you aint winning that point. every point they pump their fists with joy and happiness that becomes redundant and annoying. oh yeah by the way, players don't sacrifice their bodies(maybe on grass) but not on the hardcourts! that would result in injuries!basically this game is not realistic but fun to play against someone else like your brother or sister. for the rest it is a dissapointment and i hope next time they take more time to create a superb game.

This was by far the best tennis game since Supper Tennis of the SNES. The best feature of this game is that you have the ability to move freely. Your not on a track like other tennis games. The downside is depth. It needs more players, items, cheats, and game modes. I couldn't put it down for two weeks, but after you beat world circut.... the game is all multiplayer games. So if you don't have a brother or two this game isn't right for you. I agree with another review that there is a lack of players + espiacially female players. ....

Virtua Tennis is an excellent game as far as gameplay goes, and is probably the most realistic simulation of tennis on any game system. The strategies that the computer opponents use are as crafty as those used in real tennis, and if you think you can get by just using basic strategies, you're wrong. In the world circuit and in arcade the matches can get very difficult and competitive. The two player mode is very fun as well. The extras like new shirts and new bonus games are cool. My only complaint, like many people's, is the lack of players. I can understand why they wouldn't have Sampras and Agassi...they probably cost a lot of money to put in. However, where are Rafter, Krajicek, Martin, Hewitt, Safin, Corretja, Norman, Enqvist, Chang, and Kuerten? There could have been so many more players; it would have added a lot of depth to the game. Nice to see the inclusion of Henman and Phillipoussis though. Overall, if you are a fan of tennis and want a great tennis experience, Virtua Tennis's gameplay can't be topped.
Who ever thought TENNIS could be so much fun??

Sorry about that title, tennis fans, but I don't really get into the sport all that much. I think it's kinda dull, personally. Not after playing Virtua Tennis, however. Why should you like this game? Here are a few reasons.
First, a backstory: I heard this game ruled on about 19 different levels, so I was curious when I picked it up. I figured, at worst, I'd just sell it back. I'd seen it in the arcade and figured there wasn't much to it. That's not true and true at the same time.
The game is REALLY easy to get into. Once you figure out the play controls, you'll be overhead-smashing like the rest of them, but it doesn't end there. It's so deep, so intricate as far as shot position and hitting the ball, that you get a rush after a series of volleys and that drop shot makes it past your opponent. It makes you look into what shot you'll need for what surface: Some shots (and movements) aren't the same on turf as they are on clay, on grass, etc. THAT'S what makes a sport game awesome: When you can play it, not knowing much about the sport, and getting really into it at the end (the NHL series on Genesis was like that).
There's a lot of gameplay here, as there are a number of characters to unlock, as well as a few challenging (and fun) minigames. The minigames are pretty cool and original...using your tennis skills to knock down bowling pins, dropping shots in trash cans, playing Hollywood Squares without the washed-up celebrities or Whoopi....it's really cool.
The main reason why I like this game is this: I have a 7-year-old nephew, and whenever he comes over he makes a beeline straight to my DC. He's been playing it recently, and he really likes it. That's why I like it as well: It's easy to get into (anyone can do it), hard to put down, and it'll keep your guests entertained for hours. If you like sports games, looking for a party game (4 PLAYER ACTION!! WHOO-HOO!!!), or something that's not along the same vein as the Resident Evils, Mortal Kombats or other fighting games, pick this one up. It's easy, fun, and you'll feel unbeatable after conquering one of the harder minigames.
As for selling it back, well, get your own, fanboy....

This game has awesome graphics. The game play is simple but boost your level to expert and it will be hard dude. If your looking for a good game this is it.If you play this game you will just might get hooked to it.This game never gets boring.I've had this game for two months and it hasn't even got boring to me yet.The only time the game boring to you is because you beat everybody who has challenged you.

Not many tennis games keep me interested for long, but this isn't the case with the addictive play in VIRTUA TENNIS. The graphics are stunning as players look lifelike and the courts truly look as though you're playing at Wimbeldon or the French Open. The gameplay is simple, but also presents a challenge to master, especially in heated two-player matches. The two-player singles matches seem to always be competitive with several games coming to deuces. The world circuit mode isn't as difficult as some here have said, but it has kept me busy with the many levels and training modes that must be completed. I'm not sure why Sega chose not to include women, but it surely was a mistake. Actually, I think more people recognize Davenport, Hingis, Seles, and the Williams sisters than they do the men, besides of course Sampras and Aggasi who are absent in this game. A deeper world circuit mode, more options, and obviously more players would have helped make this game better, but overall there's not a better tennis game available. This game puts WORLD SERIES BASEBALL 2K1, which was released around the same time with more hype, to shame. I can't wait for the sequel to VIRTUA TENNIS
One of the greatest sports games of all time!!!!!!!!!

This game is in my mind one of the best looking, easiest to play, entertaining, and fun filled games I have ever seen. Addictive right from the first serve. Great graphics, multiple play options and a selection of todays top tennis stars. Even though You might think that a Tennis game can't match up with the powerhouse football and basketball titles out now, your wrong, this game can stand in the ring with all of them, and come out on top.
Good tennis game

My son and I have been playing this game almost non-stop. It's a really good game, but I didn't give it 5 stars for various reasons. First, the computer players are a bit unrealistic; no tennis player returns a serve perfectly and all the time. And, they almost never hit it into the net, or hit the ball out. Secondly, You can only play 1 full set, instead of of three or five sets like real tennis. The graphics are absolutely amazing, though. There should also be a "create your own player mode", perhaps improving his skills through the world circuit training mode. And how about arguing a call? I hope they come out with a VT 2 game. But this one is a lot of fun, for the price.
