So what makes tennis all of a sudden such a great sport? Virtua Tennis! Ok so I'm exaggerating, but still the game is great because it is so easy to pick up and get into right away. True, the game is sorely lacking in some departments (player choice, female division, etc.) but nothing can compare when it comes to what it does right.
If you're a gamer who's into sim crazy things, then this isn't for you. But if you like to get into your games quickly, ditch the instruction manuals and just veg for a few hours on the couch, this is the perfect game for you. Great graphics, insanely quick pacing, short load times and good replay value makes this game a real keeper.
Virtua Tennis is also a good multiplayer game. Why? It's easy to get into, you won't need to explain stuff all day, and the graphics help makes you look great when you play.
Great game play, but not realistic tennis

I read all the raves about this game, and, being a huge tennis fan, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this game. After playing it, I realized that all of the reviews that I read must have been written by people who didn't watch much tennis. Otherwise, why would they have failed to mention a huge factor such as that THE MAXIMUM LENGTH FOR ANY MATCH IS ONLY ONE SET? I was into this game at first but my jaw dropped when I first realized this travesty. Why in the world would someone make such an outstanding tennis game featuring professional men's players and not let you play best-of-five matches like in the pros? It's like making a football game in which you can only play one quarter! All gripes aside, the game play is outstanding, and I picked up the controls instantly. The World Circuit mode is exciting and original, and should keep me busy for a while, but it would have been nice to play an entire tournament of complete matches at each grand slam instead of one match of only two games (? ). Bottom line, the average gamer will eat this game up. Its beautiful graphics and superb game play make it one of the best sports games I've played in a long time. But real tennis fans be warned, the format leaves a lot to be desired.
Great game, not focused solely on versus mode

When I bought this game I expected that the crux of the fun would be found in the versus mode. Don't get me wrong, my friends and I were getting pretty worked up over a few close matches. However, the single player world tour is amazingly fun. You get to contract on a doubles partner, buy new equipment and earn new levels and players for the versus mode. There are also various training exercises that get increasingly harder as you progress through the game. After your matches reach level 3, the opponents get CONSIDERABLY harder and more challenging. The sound and graphics are top notch. Most interesting to me though is that the game controls seem easy to pick up at first until you get to more advanced competitions and realize that there are many subtle twists in the controls that you must master if you wish to be number one in the world. Go buy it!

Don't get me wrong, this game has a lot going for it... for about a week. Obviously this is an arcade game, and as a result the long-term gameplay suffers. I had a lot of fun with the "world" mode, but after a certain time period, the practice sessions were determined by dumb luck, and the singles/doubles matches were just too unforgiving. Leaving you with a customizable, though pointless and boring exhibition mode, and an arcade mode that simply lined up 8 matches against 8 players in 8 different locales. Though 2-player games are always fun.
The money system used in the "world" mode is great, until you've bought everyone/place/thing. Then, it's merely an exercise in frustration with random training courses, and impossible matches. The graphics here are superb, as is the control (mostly) especially since the computer often cheats FOR you in order to get far away shots. But the option of only 2 volley styles (standard & lob) makes any sort of strategy a moot point, and games typically devolve into ragged run-fests.
My advice: by all means rent this title, as I have had loads of fun with it, and I don't believe a better tennis title (besides Mario Tennis) has been released since Super Tennis on SNES or ATP Tennis on Genesis. But beware that the fun is irritatingly short-lived, as in any arcade port (Crazi Taxi also suffered from this problem.)

Okay, I hate watching tennis, I don't mind playing it, and tennis games usually put me to sleep. I played the arcade version at a local arcade and it really surprised me. I just had to get it. It is really addicting and the world circuit is really fun. You do fun trainings like crashing pins and targets and you have a partner. You can save money and buy characters for the arcade version. This game is awesome! GET IT NOW!
Fun for a while but where are the options?

When I first got this game I was seriously addicted and couldn't get enough of it. But now its just another game sitting in my collection. As you might have heard the graphics in this game are top knotch just like any other DC game. The gameplay is also very easy for beginners to pick up since there's only 2 buttons you use in the game. Yet the game severely lacks the options that are required for this type of game. The #1 flaw is that you can only play a match of 1 set. For a proffessional tennis game this is just plain ridiculous. What happened to the best of 3 or 5? Secondly, there's no option to play a full grand slam tournament. The World Circuit Mode is ok, but I would like the chance to play the full Wimbledon or French Open rather than just single matches. Also for the controls they really could have added a spin shot in addition the lob and stroke buttons. As for the players in the game (18 of them), I really think Sega could have gone the extra mile and included Sampras, Agassi, Rafter, Hingis, Williams sisters, and Kournikova. The 8 players we get are mostly people who nobody's ever heard about (except for "Has-Been" Courier). The other 10 are imaginiary characters. In my books Super Tennis for SNES is still the best game for this sport.

Virtua tennis is the best game ever made with one exception: there is no Anna Kournikova or any other attractive female players. So if you are looking for bootie- don't get this game.

Sega serves up another great title, this time Virtua Tennis. After visiting a friend's house and playing this game, I had to go buy it for myself. This is by far the best tennis game ever, and one of the best sports game ever. This is one of my top 10 games of all time. The graphics are beautiful and detailed, the sounds sound like you are there in the arena, and the gameplay is awesome. Even novice gamers can pick right up on this game. There are only two buttons to learn, forehand/backhand and lob. Serving is easy to pick up on, but takes a while to master the powerful serve shot. The players range greatly in attributes. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of players to choose from (I think 12 in all). The arenas are detailed but are there are also few of those too (I think 5). But gameplay has really been thought out. Multiplayer of course, and four single player modes. The single players range from a single match practice mode, a five game tournament mode, a career mode (called World Tour) and a bonus game type mode. All in all, despite the few players and arenas, this game is awesome and a must have for Dreamcast owners.

I am NOT an avid tennis fan. That being said, anyone who owns a Dreamcast NEEDS to buy this game! The graphics are stellar, it looks like a televised broadcast. The difficulty is adjustible so that tennis impaired people like myself can still compete. Sure, the big names are missing and there are no female players but that's the only gripe I have. Singles tests your ability to read the other player's style and adjust. Doubles is great as you not only have to recognize the opponents' tendencies but also your partner's as well. And finally, there are MANY training sessions that not only help you hone your skills but are just plain FUN! In fact, I found the bowling pin training session to be so much fun I play it over and over just for fun. This game has it all. Strategy, coordination, technique, practice and training. Its actually quite addictive. I find myself losing a match and screaming at the TV while adjusting my strategy and when I finally beat him...I yell in victory! Yeah, my roommates are growing tired of my yelling and cheering but it is the most fun I've had with the dreamcast in awhile.
why would you not buy this?

I played this game at an expo for about an hour, after that i have been seeing this game in my sleep. Sometimes i'll wake up with a racket in my hand. Actually, that's not true. What i did experience was probably one of the best four player games ever, and its easy to learn, so you dont spend an hour telling your friends, "And if you press these 5 buttons at the same time..." Even if you don't have friends you can play the cool arcade mode or the championship mode. No sampras or agassi is kind of a bummer, but maybe sega will add that in. My advice, if you spent the money on multiple controllers and VMUs, what [this much money] worth to you, it is definetly worth a solid YEAR of fun to me.
