NOLF: The Seventies

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 0

No One Lives Forever 2 is a very fun game that largely carries on in the tradition of the first, but can't recapture its spirit. The first game, which was as close to a female Austin Powers flick as legally possible, sparkled with 60's era James Bond superspy culture. Largely unrealistic in its over the top plot and villainous characters, it still drew the player into its day-glo trippy world with fantastic physics, consistently stunning graphics and level design, and sympathetic protagonists brought to life with (mostly) sharp and humorous dialogue.

The sequel trades in the psychadelic backdrops for a more serious, relatively colorless atmosphere. While perhaps more realistic, it's nevertheless not as fun as the first. It never approaches the level of tedium, but there was nothing in NOLF 2 that really compelled me to continue exploring through the next level as in the first game. Except my completist ego of course.

Another mistake I believe was made in excluding the training sessions back at headquarters. These introduced the exotic and often silly superspy weapons, and also built depth into the original game's atmosphere. I missed those interludes in the sequel. I was also disappointed with 2's restrictive pre-mission weapon selection. NOLF's ability to choose inventory between levels gave me a greater feeling of control over my methods of conquest. Not to mention the sequel is a bit shorter, which just adds to the shallow feeling.

I also fear the developers tried to lean too hard on the "stealth" mechanic, which doesnt really work any better in the sequel than the original. Too many sequences in NOLF2 are frustrating trial-and-failure excercises, due to inconsistent enemy awareness. Perhaps the worst error was the inclusion of infinite enemy respawn points at certain areas of the game. It's simply a cheap, illogical, and frustrating tactic to extend difficulty without having to work too hard at gameplay balance.

In its own right, NOLF2 is a very good first person shooter. But comparisons to the first are inevitable, and in their attempt to differentiate the sequel from the original, the developers may have learned the hard way that the only direction away from the fantastic No One Lives Forever was down.

Laugh my ...... off

Every time I play this game on the net I start laughing so much that I usually get my butt kicked. If you are looking for a game that makes you laugh this is the one. With the wide range of weapons to choose from you can make your opponent slipe on bananas, put them to sleep, trap them or just kill them and more. Even though the game has some glishes it's well worth the fun. I highly recommed NOLF 2.

A nice action game

This game is pure action. You will need to follow the "Intelligence" tips and shooting with accuracy. No puzzles, but if you love to be a spy, this is your game.
You can select three resolutions, according your video card. The game runs OK in a ATI Radeon 7500, and you can play a super spy, hard, normal or easy mode game.
About mature content, don't worry, it's only about blood and some realistics murders.

Multiplayer issues ... Patch 1.3 ??? Hmmm

Good game, very fun, great graphics, etc., but multiplayer is no-go. I have uninstalled and reinstalled this game so many times it hurts! I have tried every trick I know of to make NOLF 2 multiplay work and nothing. Good up to patch 1.2 ... but no multiplay servers with 1.2. Patch 1.3 is a joke ... still have not figured out how to make the game play with that latest patch ... and I'm not the only one. Still, a fun one to play singleplayer.

NOLF 2 is a good game

This is a very fun game. The storyline is like most spy movie themes. The weapons are many and the gadgets are amusing. This is a good game if you like FPS or if you like to sneak around (you will have to use the sneak and/or run and hide method some) The game is a sort of James Bond-turned-Female spy game. I enjoy it alot. The multiplayer modes are entertaining as well. I would definatly recommend this game

Nolf 2 is a game that will take a lot of your time, that we all agree. The second version comes with much better graphics and very cool effects. The levels are very well designed, so that you can actually "feel" the place when you play Cate. Yes, her voice has changed, and I must admit that I fell in love with Cate #1, but you get used to it. The sound is as good as the excellent sound in the first game. You get lots of gadgets and weapons, and the enemies are so much more clever this time. Their faces are actually like faces, they blink, make persuading lip movements, and make pertinent comments. And there are lots of them! Male, female, Japaneese, American, British: all. And you still have to rely heavily on stealth, something that originally made the Nolf Series popular, but you get to hide in the second version, which has its own merits and demerits. What is really impressive about this game is that the level design is so detailed. The levels in India are some of the best in any game. This game does get a bit tedious in same levels, but you stay busy all the time. And the graphics are really cool, much better than the predecessor, and environments are a lot more colorful. Overall, Nolf 2 makes a very worth successor to Nolf 1 and should be bought by all game enthusiasts as well as newbies.

One of my favorite games EVER!

I love first-person shooters (stealth or no stealth). I love James Bond-style stories. I love humor. I love great graphics.

Therefore, I love this game. I will say that the first couple of levels are a little slow, but once you get out of Siberia, it is a blast. It is just the right mix of stealth and action. Yes, there is one of the "don't get seen" levels, but it's not really too difficult and it is pretty short.

I haven't done it yet, but this is one of the few games that I can see myself playing through a 2nd (or 3rd) time.

The multiplayer is a blast as well, especially if you get a few friends together for deathmatch. There is something really satisfying about shooting your friend with a glue bomb and then taking him out with a flaming crossbow bolt.

If you liked the first NOLF, you should love this. If you thought that Contract JACK was so-so, you should enjoy this much better.

A great sequel to a great title

Whoever said sequels are bad, this one proves them wrong.
No One Lives Forever 2 is a brand new game in itself, not just a sequel. New game engine, new characters, missions and weapons.
It even contains rpg elements. Players obtain points by completing mission objectives and discovering secret documents. In turn, these points can be used to improve certain aspects of the game's character such as strength, weapon proficiency, etc.
Very cool game but multiplayer is a bit on the childish and boring side.

Refreshing

A highly entertaining first-person game with lots of action and humor. The heroine, Cate Archer, can be best described as Vanessa Kensington (Elizabeth Hurley) from the Austin Powers movies. The voice acting and dialogue are excellent as well as the graphics. The cut scenes are quite humorous as well as the battle sequences. The "Wizard of Oz" level was a pleasant surprise and worth the price alone. However, the last level bosses were pretty much handled the same way which was kind of a let down but the game is still one great game.
