Just short of exceptional

No One Lives Forever 2 both surpasses and falls short of its predecessor’s high standards. Bad things first: The game is simply too short. If you are acquainted with this genre you will see the credits rolling after no more than 10-15 hours - NOLF 1 offered more than 10 additional hours of effective game duration. The level design and extravagancy of the visited locations is by far inferior to those of the original NOLF. While I still treasure memories of places like the alpine fortress or the space station from the first part, I doubt that anybody will sit agape in front of his/her screen looking at sometimes hideously uninspired locations like e.g. the green-brown desolation of an average midwest village in Ohio. Urgh. Often it simply lacks the joy of colors that oozed out of every pixel in NOLF 1. But then again they throw sights at you like U.N.I.T.Y.‘s headquarters and you can’t help to love this game. And love it I do.
One reason were the superb gags...oh my, the GAGS! Sometimes I sat in front of my screen and burst out laughing (My personal favourite: the villain with the inadequate villain’s laugh – unforgettable!). The sense of humour is more mature and subtle than in the first part, though that was already on a very high level. Absolutely conducive to it is undoubtedly NOLF 2‘s first-rate cast of voice actors. But even reading all the small pieces of intelligence that you pick up on the way you can‘t help a smirk when NOLF 2‘s writers take a swing at everything Cold War, naturally taking advantage of all kinds of clichés about Russians and Americans that you can think of. Storywise NOLF 2 is as close to high Hollywood standards as you can get at the moment (end ’04) which is not a bad thing at all.

Finally, I absolutely want to recommend this game. Like Part 1 it is an original, even though it is likely that most of the players will have forgotten much if not all of it once they are through. Considering the numerous improvements that Monolith has made in relation to its predecessor and which I did not mention here (skill system, stunning facial motion capturing, to name only a few) one shudders at the thought of how great a more than likely sequel could be.

She's baaaack!

Cate Archer is back in this much anticipated sequel. She's gotten a graphic face-lift and boy is she beautiful! This time she's after more evil henchmen. As in the last game you'll be able to drive select vehicles and the story is equally as compelling. The graphics are great, Cate never looked better and the environments are way more detailed than the first installment. However, you will find this game to be much shorter than the original. That's no reason to avoid it though, as I'm sure you'll know from playing the first game, you just can't get enough of Cate and the wacky humor of No One Lives Forever. Underneath the pretty exterior is a killer FPS with unique weapons and hot action.

Buy this game before it's out of print. It's a classic. And don't forget to get the first game as well.

Buggy but fun game

NOLF2 has some bugs still. However it is tons of fun.

The Good: It is well-written and the voice acting is stellar. Graphics are great.

The Bad: The game play is a bit repetitive at times. Also, it does happen to freeze up occasionally. I had to check with a walkthrough several times, only to find that I missed welding a small hinge or lock. Also, I am not sure how much fun this would be to play again... replay value is important in a game.

Don't cheat with this game... there is one spot (on a level in India) that if you do cheat, you won't be able to finish the level. I know because I learned this the hard way. (OK, I admit it... I like to cheat when playing off line).

So, I am giving this 4 stars due to replay value and bugs. If you are willing to put up with these two issues, it is well worth the time and investment.

I would like to see another adventure with Cate in it.

Wow! I never thought it'd be this good!

Action, humor, AMAZING graphics, fun gameplay. This has it all. Highly recommended.

Decent, but pretty disappointing.

This is a slick, good-looking game with good gameplay. Unfortunately, it doesn't end up improving on the original much other than in the graphics department, and in some ways is worse. What follows is an unabashed whine-sessions about what's wrong with the game.

The game is pretty short. I finished it in two (admittedly long) evenings, and a good chunk of that was spent waiting through the intolerable load-times.

The promising skill-system is a big letdown. It doesn't really make for a big difference in how you approach problems; it just means doing everything a little better as the game goes on. It's mostly just a substitute for the "bigger guns for bigger enemies" system that most games use.

The AI IS nice, and the much-hyped tasking system is a good idea. Unfortunately, outside the handful of levels in which you may be observing guards outdoors for a long time, it doesn't make much difference since you'll put a bullet in everybody you see the moment you spot them.

Although the game does have a lot of "gadgets" and ammo-types, there's almost no reason to use most of them. Why stun somebody with a million kinds of grenades (which usually bounced back in my face anyway) when you can solve the problem instantly with hot lead? The only reason to vary your approach would be to save ammo, which is very rarely in short supply.

Too many bad levels. There are some cool levels with some cool goals, but there's just too much walking around performing trivial tasks. This game has the most irritating scavenger-hunts I've ever found in a game; it seems like there must've been about 6 points in the game where I was about to quit the game to avoid punching a hole in my monitor because I couldn't find my goal. This incredible aggravation has to knock down the game a star all by itself. At times I felt like the game wasn't even worth it. And when one of these problems involves dying repeatedly... Well, get a book, because you're going to be doing a lot of waiting. Maybe I'll give the game another try later, now that I know how to get through it without all the frustration.

On the other hand, the first game was good, and this can be considered about the same but better looking. Some chapters, like the Siberian mission, are excellent. So it still gets three stars. But the innovations don't go as far as hoped for, and the aggravation of the key-hunts was too much for me to stand, though maybe someone with a better sense of direction wouldn't have as much trouble.

Even Better Than The First!!!

Cate Archer is back in a huge way!!!! NOLF2 is absolutely AMAZING!!! The graphics are absolutely incredible, even the actual game, not just the cut scenes. The storyline is once again very in depth as well as comical. I will make this short and sweet. With a new barage of weapons and gadgets to tinker around with. NOLF2 will most definately rank up to Game of the Year again. I am not exagerating. It really is that good. I have ALL of the new FPS(First Person Shooters) and this is by far my favorite. Don't get me wrong, I mean games like SOF2 are great, but most FPS are pretty close to the same story. NOLF2 not only keeps you interested with the unique arsenal of weaponry and gadgets, but the storyline is still "Austin Powers" like, with machine gunning. This is a must buy for any serious FPS gamer!!!!
I have a 1.3GH P4 with 768MB RAM, and GeForce4 128MB TI4600 which most likely has a lot to do with how well my particular game performs. However, the requirements are nowhere near that, which means that almost anyone with a decent system should easily get good results with NOLF2. BUY IT!!!!!! IT IS SOOOOO WORTH IT!!!!

Check system requirements before purchasing

I loved NOLF and couldn't wait for NOLF2. What a big let down when I discovered I won't be able to play. Check the system requirements, and you'll find that your video card must support T&L (transform and lighting). Granted, my system is almost 2 yrs.old now, but with an AMD 1 gig processor, 512 mb memory, and a nvidia tnt2 video card, I've never had problems playing a game until now. So unless your system is very new, or you've recently upgraded your video card, you're out of luck.

Somewhat disappointing

Pros:
-good graphics (especially if you your card features vertex shading)
-you can interact more with the environment than before (open drawers, move dead bodies)
-you can upgrade your stats in various categories like stamina or stealth with skill points you earn for finishing mission objectives.
-gameplay is mostly identical to the first NOLF, so if you've played through that, you'll feel right at home here.

Cons:
-Very few new weapons or gadgets
-You can't select your own equipment before every mission
-Cutscenes are extremely short. You just seem to jump from one location to the next with little explanation as to what your main objective is. The first game had a detailed briefings in between missions which made the story more interesting. Also you never find out about the background of the new characters like the HARM Director.
-Level design is very dull compared to the first game. Most missions just boil down to scavenger hunts (i.e. find the secret enemy documents, find your hidden contact, find equipment dropped by Unity, and so on...) Remember the parachuting mission from the first game? NOLF2 lack that kind of experience.

Bottomline: Monolith has missed the mark in surpassing the excellent NOLF. If you haven't played that game yet I suggest you buy that, since its quite cheap right now, and hold off on buying NOLF2 until its hits bargain value. That way you'll feel you'll get your money's worth.

Love this game, but hate the glitches. I have to reboot my computer after every gameplay session. Like many others who have written reviews, I too just purchased a brand new computer, yet still have problems making NOLF2 run smoothly. I hope Sierra is listening! Back to Vice City, which runs flawlessly.

First off the screenshots don't give this games graphics justice turn the stuff up to max and its absolutely beatiful. Next is the gameplay. While a few things were unnecisary (common skill points?? this is a fps not an rpg, althought i will admit it gives the game a slight flavor, but it isn't neccesary) the rest of the gameplay is great, great AI great weapon diversity. excellent intergration of the player into the envirements, lots of secrets and a darn hilarous storyline.
This is a great game, althought just a tad on the short side its well worth the price of admission.

IF you like fps's this is a great addition to your collection.
