Fun Spy Action

No One Lives Forever 2 (NOLF2) is the sequel to the award-winning No One Lives Forever (how appropriate.) The original NOLF was named Game of the Year by many publications, and for good reason. The sequel brings back some of your old enemies, and is full of snappy British humor, good gameplay, and a fantastic story.

NOLF2's graphics are amazing. Environments come to life with real-life physics. The Ohio level is amazing. A twister is barreling through a trailer park, and the grass blows in the wind, trailers flip over, and nothing feels scripted. The sound is just as good. There are excellent sound effects, and the voice acting is fantastic. The soundtrack can get a little old, but changes with each environment.

The gameplay is very good. It combines espionage type gameplay (like Splinter Cell) and harcore action (like Soldier of Fortune). It's definitely a hybrid between those two genres.

The storyline is fantastic. I don't want to give anything away, but take my word for it. Basically Cate Archer, the star of the game, is returning to defeat the H.A.R.M organization. There are a few extremely bizzare tech issues. My system is a top-of-the-line PC, and I experienced a few random crashes. There were a few odd missions, and the mossion designed seemed....off, but it wasn't enough to drop it to 4 stars.

Overall, I recommend this game to any FPS fan, as well as any fan of a good PC game.

Great game...though not as good as the first one.

Long story short: Good game. But subpar when compared to its predecessor.

I won't go into details, but if you look, you will find reviews on game sites that agree with me. Basically, this game on its own merits is excellent. It has great graphics, great design and style, and a decent story. But it has COMPLETELY LOST THE SAME BRILLIANT ORIGINALITY AND FLAIR AS THE ORIGINAL. The story is almost nonexistent, there is absolutely no character developement, and Cate Archer feels like an almost completely different person than she did in the first game. There's no more long cut scenes that fleshed out the story and made it entertaining. They also cut down on the humor and guard conversations considerably. The level design is [poor] in comparison to NOLF1 and the enemies actually respawn in certain areas after you kill them. To top it off, I completed the game in about two thirds the time it took me to complete the first one. Santa's workshop is gone and so are all those cool guns you got to use in NOLF1 (guns are kept to a bare minimum). The lengthy, character developing cinematics were eliminated... They even eliminated most driving aspects and only included the snowmobile, which you hardly use.

So all in all, a great game (even though I bashed it). But do not, under ANY circumstances, expect to find that same brilliant, spontaneous, original and hilarious humor and level design from the first game in No One Lives Forever 2.

Cate archer will live forever....

The sleeper hit of 2000 has an update. And an AMAZING one at that. I played the full version (through about 7 missions so far....) and i must say i am floored by the beauty of the scenery, the humor of the writing, and possibly the best vocal acting and lip-syncing yet. But, let's not forget, is it fun?Absolutely!Even if you haven't played the first game you can slip into this easily. However, i would recommend playing the first game before this one so you do not miss out on any of the call-backs to the origional game. Some of them are totally hilarious. Smooth graphics on an athlon 900, 1 gig ram(pc 133)& a geforce 4 4200 video card. A little power, but nowhere near a killer rig. Low system requirements and incredible fun make this a five star must have!!!

killer game and DM

Yet another groundbreaker when it comes to gameplay and graphics. The whole singleplayer experience is superb and enjoyable. My only wish was that the singleplayer module would have been as long as NOLF1's. NOLF2 comes in at about half the total length of the first one. However, the graphics are great and there is a new DeathMatch patch available. The deathmatch mode is arguably the funnest there is todate. 'nothin like the total online bliss of seeing your opponents walk straight into your beartrap, or get mauled by the AngryKitty ;)

Cate is back!

If you enjoyed the hilarious shenanigans from the original NOLF, then you're going to love NOLF2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way! With an improved graphics engine (Jupiter engine) and incredible AI, it's a game that all gamers should have!

If you intend to play this game before you have completed the first NOLF, you are making a major mistake. This is a great game, but the original NOLF was much better. If you beat NOLF 1, and are still thirsty for more Cate Archer espionage, this is your fix.

Many reviewers say that this game is sub par until one is about 2/3 of the way through the game. This is simply not true. The first level was a great introduction to people who are new to the 1st person stealth genre. My newbie friend played it and immediately got the hang of the game. Even though it was easy, admit it: you had fun pinning ninjas to a wall with a cross bow, didnt ya? Also the India level is great. I think the tracking dart feature was really cool.

Great features addded to this game:
1)Hiding feature. Added a whole new strategy to stealth; stir up some mayhem, and then hide away, and wait for the heat to die down.
2)Searching feature. I am sick of games where you simply walk over someones body and you automatically pick up their gun. In this game you searched dead enemies bodies for intelligence and gear.
3)Skill point system. This was both good and bad, because this gave the gamer more inscentive to collect intelligence, and to complete optional objectives. It was bad because:
a. Some of the skills had no merit; i.e. searching and gadgets. It is not necessary to be able to search a body quickly at any point in the game, nor is it necessary to pick a lock quickly.
b. Once you have four or more points in both armor and stamina, you are a tank, making the game overly easy.

There were quite a few things from the original NOLF that i missed, and I shall list them for you now:
1) Santa's workshop
2)Emphasis on stealthiness, because in NOLF 2, stealthiness is fun, but once you get caught, you can easily take out your AK and blast away. In the original NOLF, it may have been frustrating, but on the stealth missions, as soon as you were caught, the mission failed. This led players to rely more on stealth and espionage, which is what being a spy is about.
3)Interactive cut scenes. I thought it was great to be able to choose what you wanted to say.
4)NOLF 2 was so much shorter than the origninal. In the original NOLF, almost every single chapter of the original took place in a new location. In NOLF 2 up to 4 chapters would take place in the same location. I think this cheats gamers out of an interesting experience, because new locations make the action so much more interesting.
5)Jumping out of a plain with no parachute, and blasting baddies with a machine gun held gangsta' style. 'Nuff said.

Verdict: Buy this game and also buy NOLF: Game of the Year edition. Together they are the two best spy games in existence. Yes, even better than James Bond in Night Fire. If you have played Night Fire you will know what I am talking about.

I downloaded the offical demo and it is very playable. I will be trying my best to buying it when it comes out. I usually do not buy games when they first come out but this one is worth it/ The only complaint I have is that they did not use the orginal voice actress for Cate Archer.

After playing the first two missions of No One Lives Forever 2 (NOLF2), I thought I'd found what I previously thought did not exist: namely, a flawless game. Everything seemed perfect, but alas, nothing is perfect in this world especially when it comes to computer games.

Don't get me wrong; I find a lot to like in this game, not the least of which are the graphics. My PC features a 128 MB Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card, so I was able to turn up the graphics options. I believe NOLF2 may have the best looking rendering of people of any game I've played, and the AI is above average too. There's a lot of detail in the visuals in this game, and almost everything looks clear which is a real plus considering that many of the newer games often look indistinct especially when they try to render tree leaves.

Getting back to the first level or two--not only did the levels look good, but the gameplay, AI, and everything else worked really well. You can even ride a snowmobile which I did even when it wasn't necessary. These levels showed off the graphics of NOLF2 (see above), and I was impressed with a waterfall on the first level and explosions on the next level or two.

But it didn't take much longer to see some flaws in this game. Since it's a spy game, you naturally need to do a lot of snooping. What I didn't like about the searching is that you need to point your cross hair all over the place to find text that tells you that you need to press the use key to do something like activate a switch. It's very easy to miss these text prompts, and I spent a lot of time wandering a level or even going back and forth between levels only to realize that I'd missed a prompt when I was very near it a half-hour earlier! Very frustrating.

Another problem with the game is the stealth missions. Most of the time NOLF2 is rather forgiving in that you can blast your way through trouble if you are spotted, but on at least one level you must either go back to the beginning of the level if you are seen or load your last save. It must have taken me the better part of an hour and numerous reloads until I finally found the room I needed to search for without getting caught. Nevertheless, the stealth missions in this game are better than what you find in most games, and you learn tricks to get through them. Just be prepared to get frustrated until you learn the best stealth techniques.

Although No One Lives Forever 2 is a good game, it's not the flawless game I thought it might be. Those first two missions were a tease, I suppose. So if anybody finds a perfect game, preferably a shooter, then please let me know!

Pros:
Great graphics
Virtually perfect at the beginning

Cons:
Frustrating searches due to a text-prompt interface
Less than perfect as one progresses through the game

Superspy Cate Archer is back, but since I've never played the first NOLF, this has no signifigance for me. The reason I bought it is because I liked the idea of a female spy, and because I'd read nothing but great reviews in gaming magazines. Plus, I had played a teaser demo of the Ohio level, and I thought that any game that has you chasing ninjas during a tornado is worth owning. The graphics are great, as are the cut-scenes and all of the evil characters that are running around. (I was hiding behind a building and I overheard two unsuspecting ninjas talking about poisoning their husbands!) Overall, the game is worth the money. The only complaint that I have is the loading between levels seems to take for-ev-er, which gets annoying when you keep on dying and you want to load your last saved game. But other than that, I'm having a great time sneaking up on the enemies, using crucial weapons, such as banana peels and killer kitty robots. This is a must-have for any first-person-shooter fan.

I am in agreement with some of the other reviewers. This was well worth the $$ but I finished it in one Sunday because I just didn't feel like going anywhere. So..It was a bit short. It incorporated the skill points well so you can do things much faster like search and use gadgets. I also agree that the tricycle and mimes mission had me laffing pretty hard. Some of the humor from the first NOLF is missing here also. Well...I went and made my own laffs. I went into ghost mode and didn't kill a single person. I shocked em, took they're weapons and waited until they woke up and hid just so I could shock em again. The charge option for your utility gun makes em do funny stuff too. Buy it, laff and enjoy.
