CAUTION!!

If you don't have a PC that is less than 1 year old, read the System Requirements carefully. The video card requirement is what is keeping me from playing this game now. You will need a fairly new graphics card to meet the minimum.

insane computer requirements

I gave this game 1 star because we were unable to install it on our 2002 computer. It has a particular sound/video card requirement that would require an update for our pc. Unfortunately, we had to return it to Sierra for a refund. Of course, "Best Buy" would not take it back. Lesson there somewhere. Read the fine, fine print very carefully.

If you've played NOLF1, stay away from this

I recently finished the original NOLF and was very impressed with it. I read good reviews of NOLF2 (here, among other places) which seemed to imply it was more of and better than NOLF, and decided to purchase it. I was in for some serious disappointment. The game is very much a case of one step forward, five steps back.

While the graphics of the game have certainly been improved, the gameplay and story are very poor compared to NOLF. The story is simply not as rich as the original game. There is very little background on the characters. In the original game, I came to empathize with some of the main villains. Nothing like that here. Further, the subtle wittiness of the original game has been discarded for a sledgehammer, in-your-face attempt at humor that I found very jarring. Finally, there was the indefinable "atmosphere" of the original story that I felt was missing in this one.

As for the gameplay mechanics, the skill system was a good innovation. It provides an additional incentive to find solutions to puzzles. Of course, since the game is linear, there is really no way *not* to get the skill points either. However, in contrast to this is the level design. Several levels in this game have respawning, infinitely many enemies. This makes them extremely annoying and very long to play. On the whole, I can only characterize the levels as "less annoying", "moderately annoying" and "extremely annoying". This does not make for a fun game.

In conclusion, I did not like this game. I should repeat here that I played the original NOLF before this game, and my view of this game is colored by that experience. I was expecting this game to be better than NOLF, but it was not. If you've played NOLF and are thinking of buying this game, my advice is: don't. On the other hand, if you've not played the original NOLF, I'd strongly recommend that you buy that game instead of this one.

Just like a movie sequel, good and bad

This follow on to the original game had some pretty high expectations to fill, and sadly it still left me wanting when it was over. The visuals and game play are a substantial improvement over the original, as now Cate's eyes move and her hair bounces, looking all the more like a real person. In the scenery we see leaves falling from trees and grass blowing in the wind. Explosions and flames look more real, and the textures for the background are stunning.

However, part of what made the original game so much fun was it seemed made by people who'd watched plenty of sixties pop culture movies and left references to that time period throughout. While the original game spoofed the spy genre, this one is simply more of Cate Archer.

There are some original episodes, (such as fighting a Ninja in a house being blown about by a tornado) but compared to the first game which had you doing everything from hitching a ride to a space station to riding a motorcycle to fighting underwater to conducting an interview, this one is mostly standard first person shooter stuff. (I really got tired of searching through the same desks and cabinets over and over and over....) I didn't like the automated bird guide, and several items were dumbed down or made a little too easy. It seemed much shorter than the first game, and less involving.

You don't have to play the first game to "get" this one, although it helps since a couple of characters do return. Also, in the first game the events took place in 1967, yet in this sequel several references place the time as 1966 and the first game taking place in 1965. Confusing? The four years or so people consider the sixties may have been a heady time, but there's no need for a mobius loop.

Overall I felt the game technically was a major advance, but the plot and story let me down. If the original was a "10" I'd rate this one about a "7".

Awesome fun

Nolf 2 is one of the funniest and original games I've played this year. There is truly laugh out loud parts that make it extremely enjoyable. The tricycle and unicycle race comes to mind. I had very little technical trouble. I do have a 2 gig machine with pentium 4 and geforce4 ti4600. I probably don't have to say this but the graphics were awesome. Everything from the water and lava to the storms and tornados. Awesome. As mentioned by another reviewer, there are quite a few gadgets which I hardly ever used. I did go out of my way to try them all once anyway. Overall a very fun and visually pleasing game. One of the top action games of the year.

Highly recommended.

Much better than NOLF1

Great Single-Player, Mediocre Multi-Player Gameplay

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 2

Features: Unlike games such as the extremely popular and successful Half-Life: Counter-Strike, NOLF 2 has single-player gameplay AND multi-player gameplay included. Single-player requires absolutely NO internet connection requirements and is great for those who have any type of internet service less than DSL or those who like to play RPG games. Going on the missions and sneaking around is truly fun and gets you really into the game. Although there are only so many missions and chapters, making it seem short, it is thoroughly enjoyable. You may finish all the missions in one or two days; it is possible to, but that is where the difficulty levels and multi-player feature comes in. There are about 4 difficulty levels I think. The multi-player feature requires a decent internet connection (DSL or higher). There are different types of games you can play with other people. I think the most popular one is Doomsday, which is just like cS except no bomb. Instead it's stealing parts from the other team to put together the Doomsday device. When one of the teams finish putting together the Doomsday device, they win and a new map comes in play.

Comments: The graphics are AMAZING. The single-player game may be short but is truly enjoyable to me. The multi-player game is okay. Aiming is hard and it takes forever to kill someone, which is frustrating. An upside to the multi-player game is that unlike cS, you can be revived faster since there are no such things as rounds, just different maps. Another downside to the whole game (including single-player and multi-player) is that it takes about 30 seconds to load, which is really long, no matter how fast your comptuer is. A good thing about the multi-player game is that you can pick up several weapons and be able to carry them all at one time instead of just having one primary weapon, one secondary weapon, and a few nades like in cS. The reason why I gave this game 4 stars is because the single-player portion is enjoyable, the graphics are GREAT, and everything else that I mentioned was a good thing about this game. You decide if it's worth buying or not.

What a piece

The programmers who wrote this game outdid themselves. The is the most frustrating game I have played in years. I have a 2GH box with a Nvidia3 graphics card. This is the only game I own that can lockup Windows XP(SP1) to a point where a reboot is required. The levels can take a minimun of 1 to 2 minutes to load. If you enter a new level and die you get to go back to your last save(the one you purposly took). Most games at worst take you back to the begining of the level. Before these bozos make NOLF3 I sure hope they go play some other PC games and learn how to program games that live up to industry standards.

good, clean fun

I like this game no matter what the people at the forum say. It is being critizied because it is shorter than the original, but that seems to be the norm now. I think it improves on the original in almost every way: graphics, AI, stealth sequences, action sequences, and skill points. It just isn't as revolutionary as the original, so it doesn't get 5 stars.

It also has a few other problems that keep it from getting 5 stars:

1. there are some parts where going in guns blazing is your only option, this wouldn't be such a problem if you didn't have skill points. But it is really hard to take on a hoard of ninjas when you have put all your skill points into stealth, it also seems that you HAVE to put some points in your armor skill and health skill to even beat the game.

2.The siberia mission: it wasn't bad, it just wasn't excellent, it got better as you get to the end of it

3. respawning guards, this doesn't seem much of a big deal to me as it did to the people in the forum. The only time this got annoying was in the siberia mission, The other times it wasn't that big a deal.

4. multiplay, I love co-op but they should have included more missions

Things that make this the one of best action games of the year:
1.the action sequences are some of the best of the year, just as gripping as the original nolf
2.the ending level is extraordinary, enough said
3. the music is excellent
4.the cutscenes are the best in-game engine cutscenes of the year
5. the jupiter engine is best use of the lithtech engine ever, looking better than the quake 3 engine
6. the replay value of this one make this just as long as the original
7. stealth sequences are also very fun, the AI is DEVIOUS

That is all I can say without taking up the maximum of 1000 words

I enjoyed this game because I didn't expect it to be exactly like the original. If you were a fan of the original and live by it, you may not like this game. I enjoyed it totally though.

Great Game, even better than the first!...

This game is truly one of the best games of the year next to Jedi Knight. Good characters, excellent AI, and a groovy plot make this a must have for anyone who liked the first or FPS in general.
