I have to call it as I see it. I really think the team behind the COD franchise needs to be wiped clean and new people need to be brought in.
COD 4 has been modernized. No more WW2. GREAT! I love WW2 games but it was time for a change in COD. That is it. Nothing else is new.
You still cannot shut the music off during game play! ULTRA ANNOYING to many people out there. What is the harm of giving people a choice? NOPE, the ego centric nature of Activision won't allow that. I had to hack the files of COD, COD2 and now I will have to hack the files again to shut the music off.
I have nothing against the music, I just don't like it on. I like the combat sound effects.
Again, the COD game play is nothing but run and gun and it is AGAIN SCRIPTED!!!! Achieve a goal or move your character to a certain spot and events occur. This makes a game so darn predictable that replay value goes down the tubes!
I am not impressed with the graphics either. They seem outdated, stale. There are too many other games out there with nicer details and realistic features. COD 4 is not one of them.
This game is not worth the high price tag they have slapped it with. NO WAY! I recommend you borrow a friend's copy, install it, play it and if you still want to buy it, go for it. It is too soon to tell if the multiplayer will be worthwhile. There were a lot of claims that the COD 2 MP was outstanding and a tremendous success, yet the servers were empty. Hop on a 3 year old UT 2004 server and it is still jamming with action!
No, the COD franchise is at the end. They really need to rebuild from the ground up. There is a ton of potential but it is not here in this release.
Amazing!!!

Awesome set up, cool story, great presentation, and most importantly greeeeeeeat game!! The voice acting is awesome too. The little things really make this game, such as how fast you can switch between weapons and the sounds and feel of it...guns don't just magically appear in front of you, you can actually hear the noises that go along with taking out your pistol or your main weapon...etc. Fast paced, action packed, easily the most impressive COD to date. HIGHLY recommended.
CON: My video card is a Nvidia GeForce 6800...so it's not the most current one. It was a little sluggish with the cinematics...but ran the actual game fine...just an FYI for anyone who has a slightly dated video card. NOTHING to do with the quality of the game.

It seemed very short, like others have said. It was familiar a feel with the other CoD titles and I wasn't looking for anything earth shattering in advances so that was good for me.
I would however like to see a CoD cover somthing other than WWII or the stuff that's going on now. "Now" is in our faces already.
Awesome

A little short, but riveting. I'm glad to see Sgt. Price, and there are some amazing scenes that play out.
This is by far the most realistic of the wartime shooters, in my opinion. My only real gripe is that the bad guys don't stop spawning until you hit some invisible line, so one has to move forward in order to keep more and more of the bad guys from coming.
It's called a Re-Skin of earlier COD's

The Single Player takes 5 hours and the MultiPlayer for this is lame, boring and not worth 50 bux. Yea it's pretty and they added Rank and Challenges, but it's still: Spawn, Rush, DIE, Spawn, Rush, DIE. No strategy and no teamwork=boring and monotonous. The MODS had better be good. . . . .. .
Game of the Year? Game of the Decade.

Single player wise, this game is phenomenal. Everything about this game is amazing. You feel like your in a movie, or Iraq, in intense firefights and warfare with highly realistic weapons, music and environments. Some of the missions are amazing - One mission, in particular, allows you to man the Lockheed AC-130 Gunship (which is a real life, 4-engined prop military warplane, with heavy-caliber weapons onboard). You have a live, TV Camera shot of the ground, your troops are moving in, while the enemy is stationed and deploying in a war-stricken town surrounding a church.
Ever watch CNN of those fuzzy, gray-white colored missle screens from military aircraft bombing targets? Yeah, thats what you get in this mission. Exactly, right on the money realism. You get 3 guns, too, I forget the calibers. Theres nothing more satisfying than launching the largest caliber shot from the Gunship, and wiping out some 20 terrorists seconds later, and their bodies dispersing amongst the landscape. Its a blast.
They really focused on detail and accuracy in this game, I can assure you that. RPG's? Are you kidding me? Awesome. The RPG's are realistic too, you can aim them, but essentially, they fly all over the place after being shot (highly inaccurate). The cinematics in this game are unbelievable. YOU WILL feel like you are in a movie, particularly if you have a high-end computer.
The AI is incredible. Its so refreshing to see smart, intelligent AI. In this game, AI will make mistakes, they'll rush you, run past you, shoot your teammates, accidentally make mistakes, and more. If you've ever played, say, just about ANY other game out there, you know that, as soon as you poke your head up, ALL AI start shooting at you. Not true in this game. Everyone is fair game, including your own AI teammates.
The terrorist AI play terrorist like roles, too. You'll walk past a bus, not seeing anyone, then all of a sudden a terrorist stands up with his 'spray and pray' tactic, spraying his AK47 wildly at you and your teammates. Again, VERY smart AI. You can stand next to your teammates, and the AI may very well shoot at your teammates, before they shoot at you.
You have suicidal terrorists, you'll shoot them, they'll pull out a grenade and shout something in a foreign language, then blow themselves up (in an attempt to kill you). AI will shoot RPG's, throw grenades, shoot wildly.
They really did a phenomenal job with the AI in this game. The SAS/American teams play with traditional military tactics. The terrorist teams play with Guerilla-like tactics.
After you beat the game, an 'Arcade' mode is unlocked. Basically, you can go to any mission, and play for points. Compete against your friends, or whomever, really. Some of the arcade missions are very fun and challenging, and again, with utmost realism and perfection.

Multiplayer
-------------------
Basically, nearly all the maps in single-player are available in multiplayer. You cannot fly aircraft or control vehicles, however. Which is fine, given the intense face to face action.
Multiplayer is comparable to Quake III Arena in terms of how hardcore it is (NONSTOP gunfire, its complete chaos, 24/7). So much chaos, bombs, RPG's, nades, full auto machine guns, sub machine guns, sniper fire, suicide bombers, everything you can imagine, jam packed into small maps. Get into a server loaded with people and I guarantee you, you wont have time for a bathroom break. Complete action-packed intense realism that'll keep you on your feet every second of the game.
I say its comparable to Quake III because you move fast, shoot fast, kill fast, and its a fast paced environment. Meanwhile, you complete challenges while you play. The sounds you hear when you complete the challenges are similar to what you would hear in Quake III. (Remember some of the sounds when you picked up quad damage, etc.? Well, some similar sounds are there when you go on a 10 killing streak in this game, etc.).
I really like how its easy to build up your rank, points, and obtain new weapons and weapon mods in multiplayer in short periods of times. Most of the challenges are, say 'Get 25 kills with this weapon to unlock Red-Dot Sight'. Its 25 kills, total, not in 1 game, so thats easy to obtain. As you go on, you may get 'Get 150 kills to unlock Grip for Accuracy'. Even 150 kills you can rack up in an hour or two of gameplay, easy.
While to some of you, that may seem TOO easy, or even too hard, i'm a two year player of Battlefield 2, another big FPS PC game. On Battlefield 2, ranks and weapon unlocks required HOURS and hours and hours of gameplay. I probably have some 200+ hrs on BF2 and I still dont have some weapons unlocked, and i'm still in a lower-tier rank. It sucks, not getting anywhere, but killing so many people and doing so much. All I can say is, i'm done with that game, after playing COD4.
In COD4, the spawns are almost always good, on some maps you may have to sprint a short distance, but on most maps, you spawn some 20 feet from the action. Most servers, also, if you die, you can respawn instantly. No Lame 15-second respawn rule like on Battlefield 2 that I -used- to play. Its nice respawn a second after dying and get right back into battle, without penalty. Thats what fun gameplay is about, no frills, no penalties, easy going hardcore action. This allows you never-ending gameplay full of intense, nonstop, firefighting.
Bottom line is, this is the best game, i've ever played, EVER, first person shooter wise. I'm the kind of person that, when I find a first person shooter I like, i'll stick with that 1 game for a long, long time, until something better comes along, then I completely switch. My experience with first person shooters is (from most recent played to last played):
- Call of Duty 4
- Battlefield 2
- Medal of Honor Pacific Assault
- Medal of Honor Allied Assault
- Rainbow Six 3
- Unreal Tournament 2003
- Half Life Counterstrike
- Quake III Arena
- Unreal Tournament
- Rainbow Six Rogue Spear Addons (Cover Ops, Urban Ops, etc)
- Rainbow Six Rogue Spear
- Unreal
I moved up since 98' through all of those games, just having played BF2 a few weeks ago, now. Havent played BF2 since i've had COD4, and probably never will again. NOTHING tops COD4.

Update Jan 13th 2008
------------------------------
Still playing this game, now level 30. Already banned from 3 servers (and I dont even hack, glitch, nothing), pretty pathetic. Just like every other game - If you're owning a clan = Banned. If you're owning newbies, including the admin = Banned. Unbelievable. As i'm a level 30 (Lieutenant II) plus all prior FPS game experience, I almost always finish in the top 3 with a lot of kills. Just got out of some newbie server because I was banned there, the admin wrote 'Go hack somewhere else'. Ridiculous. I dont even hack to begin with. When it comes to multiplayer games, avoid servers that have either A. Admins playing, B. Clan-Based servers.
If you're owning the clan, you get banned because 'you're a cheater'. If you're owning newbies on some admins server, you get banned because 'you're a cheater' again, yet you're legitimately not even hacking.
I did play in a server tonight, 32/32 players, clan based server, where the whole clan was hacking. Someone mentioned 'nice hacks' and some of the clan members replied 'you just noticed newb?'. It was a 'hardcore' based style server, pretty chaotic, but basically, you'd spawn and instantly die within 5 seconds.
As I play this more, its pretty obvious that there are already several COD4 hackers. I already have a lot of hours into this game, and some servers you can tell are legit (because everyone seems to be on the same page, same skill levels, its balanced), other servers have 1 or 2 hackers (obvious, always in first place, always excessive kill over death ratio, magically know where you are 24/7). I'd assume the most widespread hack used in this game is wall hacks or glowing bodies (basically anything to make the enemy more visible). Havent really encountered any autoaim or anything weapon related.

Great game overall. A little short but still a great addition to the game. Very pleased that this came out for the PC as well instead of just game consoles.
Enjoy!
Bad disc

Installed and played the demo only because the disc I got from Amazon gave nothing but read errors on 2 computers and a total of 3 different CD ROM drives. The 1305 read error turns out to be very common and is apparently due to a bad disc. I was unable to install the game. It is a hassle to ship back and it takes forever to get a refund.
From what I saw in the demo:
Good:
Graphics and effects are pretty good
Immersive game play
It feels like you really work with your squad
Not WWII for a change
Bad:
-Very very linear and overly scripted game play, I am 50 feet from my target but I have to take a 2 mile detour because my strong SAS soldier can't jump a 3 foot fence? Come onnnnnnnnn. Half Life 2 was scripted but they did a much better job of not making it seem ridiculous.
- switching characters makes it hard to 'get into it'
Don't buy unless you are already a hardcore FPS gamer

1) Single Player - fun, but only 3 hrs of gaming
2) Coop - No Coop (lies), only you vs who ever you have over (no bots!)
3) Online -
a. Don't even bother unless you already have > 500-800 hrs in FPS
b. Server does a really bad job leveling teams
c. Players with long kill streaks get additional resources which tend to make blow outs out of already lopsided matches.
They clearly don't care about getting a new fan base. If you are an existing fan of the series then yes. Other wise don't buy this game. I hate this game and really wish I could get my money back!
