COD4 Modern Warfare is, in my opinion, the best of the series so far. The action and visuals are fluid and immersive. Although COD still uses the sctipted FPS style, the gameplay will suck you in and get your adrenaline pumping as fast as your rig can spit out the pixels.
Honestly, I've had way more fun with COD4 than Crysis so far. The 1st Crysis patch has helped, but Crytek still has quite a bit of fixin to do. There are some critics that say the single player game is short on game play. It does more along quickly, but the rollercoaster ride makes up for it. There are situations for just about everyone. Squad shootouts, survival stages, big weapons, sniper, vehicles and the AC-130 stuff is off the sniznick.!! Can you say 40mm?
If the single player leaves you thirsty, the online multiplayer takes the glorious COD4 engine and creates some fast-paced frenzied fragg-fests.!!
If you're a FPS gamer, you gotta play COD4.!!

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, has a very unique and exciting single-player. It's so much fun, that once it ends you'll be wishing for more! There is a bonus mission after the credits roll, so you'll want to stick around for that.
After completing the single player, which familiarizes you with the game, I moved on to the multi-player. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the maps for the multi-player come from the single-player.
There are many incentives for you to play the multi-player - you can work your way up the ranks, from levels 1 through 55, you can earn new weapons, and you can even earn new perks (such as the ability two carry two primary weapons, the ability to not be detected by UAV's, the ability to carry multiple frag grenades, etc.). You earn experience points, not only by successfully carrying out missions and earning kills, but also from challenges. The higher up in the ranks you move, the more challenges you unlock. The challenges are another wonderful incentive to play the game, as they earn you upgrades as well as experience points.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the game.

This game is an amazingly customizable, addictive, and photo-realistic modern day FPS. It is probably the most realistic looking game I've ever played. The graphics, even though they're on DX9, are stunning. I thought Doom 3 was amazing when it came out, but this is better, even for its time.
I started the game off by going through the single player campaign. Yes, its short, but that's because the single player is basically a primer for online play. It takes you through several scripted missions and forces you to use all the guns for some length of time and introduces new things, like grenade launchers, laser sights, silencers, air strikes, flashbang grenades, and RPG's that weren't in CoD2. There's also some cookies like the "kill from the airplane" mission that are pretty neat. As far as nifty features that *should* have been in CoD2: you can now "cook" your grenades again to better control their explosion, you can shoot through some types of walls if your gun has enough power (wood panel fences no longer protect from machine guns), you can toss back grenades at the enemy, you can sprint for short distances, and have more control over which guns and grenades you start with.
When you finish the single player, you're ready to hop into multi-player without getting just totally slaughtered after every spawn. This is where the fun and addiction truly starts. As you play, you gain "experience points" that lead to "promotions". The higher you get promoted, the more guns and perks you unlock, leading to more customization of your character and and playstyles more fitted to you. There are tons of gadgets and addons to collect, and therein lies the addiction. You may have collected all the sights for your M4, but have you collected all the color schemes? Get to it! Just one more level and you can start placing claymores!
Perks are an entirely new feature... Basically, you get to fill 3 slots with a perk, and each different perk can only go in a specific slot (1, 2, or 3). Perk 1 tends to be a weapon/explosive perk, allowing you to carry extra grenades, affix a handle to a machine gun, carry RPG's, or even C4 and claymores. You get to pick 1. The other slots have similar relations between perks. They aren't overpowered gamebreakers; there are no guided missles perks or kevlar vest perks, and a private can easily kill a general who has all the perks unlocked. Sometimes you even tend to stick with the perks you start with for certian gun sets, as you just don't need some of them for the way you'll play with certian guns.
My favorite concept from this game is that near-infinite customization, and finding that perfect combination of weapons and perks to have the most fun in multiplayer. Sometimes I like to bring grenades, sometimes I'd rather have RPG's. Sometimes I like my light machine gun to mow down the opposition, even through walls, with the penetration and bullet damage perk, and other times I like to play "arnold" and go with the extra health and last stand perks. And then I need to find which of the light machine guns fires best for me. Then I can switch to a sniper rifle and start all over again, all the while leveling up and unlocking more guns and perks.
That was where CoD2 (and most other shooters) lost me... I like single player campaigns, but when you get to multiplayer there were 5 guns for each side and there was nothing new to see in another round. This is the first FPS that has signficant multiplayer replayability for me, as well as some type of measurable multiplayer progression.
Wrap it all up in absolutely beautiful eye candy and intuitive controls, and you have a great game overall.
Just Buy it.

The single player game is a blast, although its more on the short side. But Multiplayer is where the real draw is.
In a word... AWESOME!!!

I've been a fan of Rainbow 6, America's Army and other FPS games but this one takes the cake. I just finished all the levels and truly enjoyed it. Finally, a modern era game that has stunning graphics and a great plot. The scenarios are actually something you could imagine happening today.
You won't go wrong with this one. Whether you play single player or multiplayer, it's all fun!

Been playing 1st person shooter games since the first MOH game was introduced; MOH, Bros in Arms, Socom Navy Seals etc; had their day, but COD has by far surpassed them all with their games! I was somewhat skeptical about "leaving" the WWII theaters for the "Modern Combat" action but as I got into the game I was really impressed the way Activision put this game together! The graphics are great and The game plays with no problems at all! If you've played the other games and are thinking of buying this one...by all means DO IT!
Great Game

Love the game, worth the buy. Gave it 4 stars because it is short in single player. Warning to buyers you need a new higher end computer to run this game. I have a brand new dell xps with 3 gb Ram, 2x core and a highend video card that it run's great on. Tried loading it in my two year old Dell Dimension with 1 gb Ram, pentium 4 and older graphics card and it was a know go.
