if you are a hardcore gamer and you love fps games this game is not even remotely close to the other cod games the freakin graphics are amazing if youve played the demo then you know what im talking about the graphics are exactly like the previews of the game on tv theyre so realistic and let me tell you there are a lot of awesome weapons as well that simulate real life military weaponry and i suggest this game because quite frankly its the best game ive ever played.

I purchased Call of Duty 4 based upon the fantastic reviews this game has received. The absence of a quick save feature forces a "killed" player to re-enter the same arena again and again; the "realism" and dusky light of many scenes makes it next to impossible to see most enemies clearly; the fast paced action makes it hard to develop emotional interest in the conflict or in the fleeting enemies one faces. In short, the game simply isn't very much fun. Part-time (amateur) FPS gamers will get much more enjoyment by selecting Half Life 2, F.E.A.R. (all three versions) and, yes, by good old Doom 3--each of which I have played (and enjoyed) several times.

i was expecting this game to be good but not this good! absolutely flawless game intense action all the way through and unlike a lot of other shooters it is actually pretty hard, the graphics are beautiful! at times you could be mistaken that you are actually watching a tv feed from Iraq, you must BUY this game.
Boring after 1 level.

For the amount of hype and flash this game is a disappointment. After all these years, you would think that developers would make a game more open ended and creative. Graphics are not the whole package. For a real experience that can be played different EVERY single time try Operation Flashpoint Resistance and it's many add ons. Much more realistic gameplay. The graphics are dated, yet the immersion is much deeper because it has more atmosphere and sophisticated AI. Don't waste your money on COD4 unless you like to play a game one time and sit it on your shelf...

Things to note:
This review is done by someone who isn't a hardcore FPS player, just the game player.
True to it's premise, CoD4 places you into the modern battlefield of today. Offering a very disappointingly short single-player story but an expansive Online Multiplayer-mode, this game will mean more to those who are willing to put in the hours for the online-mode rewards.
Single-player Review:
Depending on how nuts you are about trying to finish the game with the best time possible, the average to complete this would be about 3 days. Rotating between a US Marine and the British SAS, just like in any other game (and older CoD titles,) you set out to complete missions to advance in the game. Nothing too fancy or revolutionary, but it is a tried and true method to keeping you hooked.
With 3 settings of difficulty, the player must become used to a few new habits upon engaging the enemy (crouching is a must, and iron-sights become second nature,) and you cannot simply run and gun and hope to come out unscathed.
Multiplayer Review:
A shining example of the possibilities for genres other than RPG's to have long-term reward/hours-spent, the Multiplayer mode is very enjoyable and satisfying, IF YOU SPEND TIME ON IT.
The MP mode offers standard modes of play: Deatmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, etc, but the option that defines this game is the ability to outfit your character with skills and weapons unique to ever other player you meet. These "skill" are imaginative without being too ridiculous (steady shot, larger grenade/ammo storage, stronger shots, etc), and for the most part does not make the game imbalanced. Also included are rankings and a mic-option.
As you progress in the multiplayer mode, earning badges and completing mini-tasks, you open up options to customize your character with many features, including camo, sights, and new weapons, and new skills. As said, they do not "imbalance" the game, rather just giving you more variety for which to customize your character. Those who have earned all the badges, weapons, and skills, does NOT mean they are better than you with the gun that you start out with. Tactical play is key in this game, and position means victory.
Conclusion:
Buy this game if you are looking for a FPS that rewards you for skill and time invested, and not for the single-player mode. With a very high replay-value and a strong sense of competition, and not as straightforward as Counter-Strike or Unreal: Tournament, it will take more than just twitch-reflex to win in this game.

The game, when it runs it great.
There is some BADLY WRITTEN CODE that can cause an error that will keep your game from running AT ALL.
Activision claims it is a sound card/driver issue. I have tried many complete builds of computers for the purpose of running this game using mainstream and high end hardware along with installations on both Windows XP Pro and Vista Ultimate. It is not sound card or driver issue.
Please understand I tried many completely new installations of these operating sytems, drivers and bios up and downgrades. I have also purchased both the CD and Download (from Direct2Drive) installations of the game. It simply will not run for me. In each installation I tried every suggestion Activision offers.

The low rating is simply because I haven't played it yet! Check your video card before purchasing this game. A dissapointment that I need to upgrade to play.
Fun game but lacks key feature: Multiplayer online and coop campaign

(This is for the PS3 version.) Compared to the Halo series on XBOX, this game is on par. It might even be better because it's more realistic in terms of shooting. BUT, it lacks two important features that Halo has: (1) the ability to play against the computer with two players (aka Coop Campaign), and (2) playing online with two to four players from your console versus the rest of the online community (aka Online Splitscreen; previous Call of Duty editions had this standard feature). So, you've been warned. You can't have friends come over to play with you against the computer or play online simultaneously with your friends. Though you can only play each other (4 players) in Splitscreen mode amongst yourselves, just not online.
