Repetitive and redundant.

Quick review on this one:

It's fun, but VERY redundant. I liked the game overall, but here are some of the negative points I wanted to highlight:

- It's repetitively redundant (same tasks, fights, etc. over and over).
- I don't like how you have to ride the stupid horse to get from one area to another. I wish you could just "warp" to the cities you need to get to.
- The "inbetween" map (the areas in between city portals) is useless and a waste of time. They could have left that part out.
- Lastly, the conclusion was a predictable, anti-climactic let-down.

It's fun, but buy it used instead of brand new like I did.

I will keep this quick and simple

Great controls that are easy and fun
The story is well written and well acted(IGN said that the twist being presented so early into the game ruined the whole story...but I believe that its about the actual story not the "twist" and its great)
Beautiful graphics the cities are huge and feel very much alive

A must own game for anyone that can appreciate other genres than shooters(unlike certain IGN staff members........)

didn't finish for fun

The preview for the game was amazing. When I first heard about how you can kill your tagets when you want to and in whatever way you want to I thought this could be one of the best games ever. I was wrong. I did not finish it because it was fun I finished it because I could not be satisfied till I did. The controls are excellent probably the best part of the game. All the things leading up to the mission are trival and basically the same for every assasination. They promised you could choose how to kill targets when to kill them and in what way, not true. There is one place and time for every target and the only way to kill them is up close. So you can hit targets with all your throwing knives from a distance but they will not die until you hit them up close with your sword. This game is not what it should have been.

Almost great

The good:
- Altair has the best, most fluid motion of any game character. You can climb on virtually any surface and jump from building to building, all while keeping only 1-2 buttons pressed. Ubisoft took their Prince of Persia character and once again revolutionized this aspect.
- AC has an amazing fighting system. Very easy to pick up and difficult to master. I disagree with some reviewers that said this game is a button masher. Most of the enemies can be defeated in simple commands, as long as you time them right. One movement that is essential to beating this game is the Counter move. Wait for the right moment and it is a one hit one kill move.
- Graphics are very good and level design is excellent. Ubisoft managed to create a world and while this is - by no means - as deep as Oblivion's, it is quite impressive for this type of game.

The bad:
- The thing I had a problem with though, is with the assassinations themselves. I wish you would have been given more freedom in executing them. They all go down the same way. Basically they do not start until you sit in a specific spot and that spot is almost always in front of the guards - meaning you will have to fight everybody, to get to your target. If you are looking for a deep or varied gameplay, then Oblivion would be a better choice. AC is an Action game and there are no Hitman / Thief type of missions.
- Second bad thing - the ending! I guess I was hoping you will get the hidden blade in real life and use it to escape the lab. As it was - the ending was way too dry.

The ugly:
- This game desperately needs a Difficulty rating. It starts very easy and then it becomes insanely difficult with the Assassination #9. I would guess that most casual gamers will get stuck in the end and give up in frustration. A difficulty rating would also provide some replayability ... well, not to the people that complained about the repetitiveness, but the rest.

Overall: For $40, this game is definitely a buy. It will keep you busy for 20-40 hours (depending on how many flags you want to get). However - at $60 - this may be a bit too expensive for what it is.

Mixed bag of tricks

This game boasts some of the most spectacular 360 achievements so far.
Visuals are nothing short of humbling; rustic buildings, citywide overlooks, moving clouds - just awesome.
Maps are exorbitantly huge with virtually no pop-in or framerate issues whatsoever, unless the player is running at full speed through sparse areas. Merely considering the sheer number and consistent responsiveness of NPC's, this is a mighty achievement. Glitches can be numbered on one hand, and the physics are almost faultless.

As a veteran gamer, I appreciate the multitude of options.
Numerous skills/preferences are applicable. There is no "one way" to achieve any particular objective. Blending in with a crowd is just as viable as figuring out a way to climb to a rooftop and leap over your potential opponents. Enjoy engaging foes outrightly ? The fighting mechanic is relatively deep and rewarding, if not flawless. Throw in a graduating format of skipping unnecessary riding sequences and a fair amount of subtle humor, and you've got an A-List title, right ?

Well...not exactly.
If the mighty Halo has taught us anything, it's that playability and replayability are what matter in this generation of console gaming.
After a few missions, this game devolves into the dreaded "R" word - Repetition.
Finding the same informer and accomplishing his same task, finding and pickpocketing the same type target for important information...even the "same" citizens rescued spout the same dialogue. All in the same format of climbing the (yes - the same) highpoints before such objectives are even made possible. As much as the game attempts to keep things fresh, I honestly got a headache walking around, trying to figure out my (absolutely unprompted) next move at times. For all of its diversity, many of Assassin's Creed's later kills devolve into a tedium of rinse & repeat action. This said, as much as I saw every "plot twist" long before it happened, the ride was not entirely without reward. The "futuristic" aspect was well explained, completely viable, and further added to the story in my opinion.
Overall I liked the game, but could not recommend it sans caveat. As much as I marveled, I also felt frustrated and constrained. The "One button to rule them all" problem came into effect, and I found myself cursing out loud as I repeated sequences over and over again.
Almost.

Blah...

This game was pretty fun at first, but started getting repetitive after a while. The tactics were never really changed up. In order to have a target to assassinate, there are three ways you HAVE to gather info: sit on a bench and overhear two people talking, pick pocket some guy for info, and beat somebody up until they talk. Those are the three same methods you must use EVERYTIME you have to assassinate somebody. After doing this over and over, it becomes a snoozefest.

After weeks of having the game, I still haven't beat it. Not because it was hard, but because I just lost interest. I wouldn't recommend anybody to buy this game. If you know a friend that has it, I'd suggest borrowing it or renting it from a video store.

The only reason this game gets three stars is because of the very interesting and original storyline.

Not a buyer in my opinion

I bought this game a long time ago and put the disc in my Xbox 360 thinking I would enjoy it. After a week or so, it became so repetitive and linear that I got tired of playing it and sold it for $30 to my brother who has moved out. After a while he wanted to give it back because he didn't like it either, and I just got it back today from him and put it in to see if I would like it if I played it over again. I didn't. Like I said, the gameplay is too repetitive and the quests are the same every time: assassinate, save a citizen being bullied by guards, pickpocket to get throwing knives, and interrogate people which means just hitting them until they tell you the information. And you spend your free time only jumping from building to building and occasionally killing guards. You can get away effortlessly, just climb a building and hide in a roof garden or a haystack on the ground. Not to mention the difficulty for this game is incredibly easy, you can take on as many as 30 guards and not die. If they made it so it had quests and side quests like Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion, I would like it much more because those quests were so different and fun, they keep you occupied and entertained. Ubisoft kind of ruined this game, I've anticipated it far before it was released and am disappointed. Not to sound disrespectful, but they focused too much on making the outstanding graphics that they didn't include much of the fun factor in it.

I've been trying to play it again and get the achievements for my 360, that is the only thing keeping me motivated.

Dissapointment

The graphics, world, story, and all that are wonderful. But the game as a whole is stupid, repeditive and basic. They could have done so much more with it. If I could do it over again I would rent it and then have realized what a horrible waste of money it is. This game sucked.

Not worth the money

This all in all is a terrible game. It is not fun and you only kill about 20 people. You sneak around and listen to peoples conversations. This is probably my least favorite 360 game.

Brilliant delivery with only a handful of drawbacks

Assassins Creed delivers on its promises right from the beginning. The twist at the opening is a touch hard to swallow, but at least they cover all the glaring plot holes, and it helps that you don't have to deal with the main character speaking with a hard to understand accent or using esoteric terminology. Which is extra good considering there are no subtitles. The storyline is straightforwad in the Assassins role. You fail to eliminate Sir Robert, a Kinghts Templar, while simulataneously failing to complete a vital mission.

Your mission is saved by a fellow assassin, and you are demoted to Novice. To regain your standing, you must elimiate 9 men who're exacerbating the Crusades. Every one seems to be a monster... at first. While many have excuses and reasons that're glazes on something foul and inexcusable, some will manage to slither under your skin as to whether they were truly evil. The butcher doctor, who manages to save some while killing others, in the cause of advancing medical science so he can help all. The slaver, who captures some slaves solely in order that they may have food and shelter.

Visuals/Audio: This is where they make their bank. The landscape is photorealistic in many places, and breathtakingly gorgeous. The houses are well done to the period and locations, as are the people. Motions and movements and realistic, which is much, much harder to do well than it sounds. The audio has some tiny drawbacks, mainly making it hard to hear voices over the background jumble.

Gameplay: Combat is great, and well thought out. While it is somewhat repetitive, the basic enemies can put you down very quickly if your not careful. Some aspects are well done, if annoying. Walking through crowds can draw attention if you jostle too many people, and beggars will block your path constantly in poorer areas. One just annoying fact that they should've caught is some NPC's have an almost magnetic connection to you. The town crazies will constantly shove you, ignoring everyone else, unless you give them a wide berth, and the moment you're shoved you're exposed. But thats one drawback among an otherwise brilliantly put together setup.

Sidequests are somewhat more annoying. The ones in the city are rinse and repeat. Save the citizen by killing 4 guards, pickpocket, eavesdrop, and interrogate sum them up in their entirety. A bit more variety breaking it up would've masked it perfectly. The assassinations themselves are challenging and very engaging. The extra sidequests are as bad if not worse. Find the flags and find the templars. While those sound plausible, and they are for the templars, considering they're much harder fights, the flags are infuriating. You'd think flags would be on buildings and with army encampments, and for the most part they are, but many are also hidden in high grass, down blind alleys, and in the middle of forests. I can not see how those quests can be completed without guides.

Overall: The quests are the only reason this isn't 5 stars. It wouldn't have taken much thought, and little addiitional effort to come up with additional ideas. Aside from that one stain, this game is gorgeous and engaging. Despite how it might make you grind your teeth sometimes, it is one of those ones where you'll find yourself going "Just one more flag.... Is it really 4 am?" Even in retrospect, its worth the $[...] price tag.
