Assassin's Creed almost distinguished itself as one of the best video games of the year, but it ended up falling a bit short. The good: the cities are incredibly dense and detailed. It's amazing how much there is going on there, and how good it looks. You really get a feel for the city when you go for the bird's eye view. Another positive is the sword fighting - maybe it's not the best in the world, but I have fun with it. As for the bad, the game is awfully repetitive. If they had varied the game a bit, it could have overcome its other shortfall - the incredibly weak AI.

Still, it all adds up for a very enjoyable game. I just hope it's successful enough for a sequel, and the makers listen to the complaints and take this series to the next level.

A Killer Game

There's enough new and unique here to allow you to look past the repetitive elements, the overly-long cut scenes and the incredibly annoying game play in the lab scenes. Skipping across the rooftops of the richly detailed cities assasinating guards along the way never gets old. The game controls are simple but the game is still challenging enough to be interesting.

This is the first XBOX 360 game that enaged me enough to want to play all the way to the end.

A Nice Diversion

This game packs alot of hours into it, that's for sure. In fact, that may be part of the downfall. My only complaint is there wasn't enough to do in the amazingly HUGE cities; There are only so many types of missions, so a little more variation and weapon upgrades(more so than offered...)would have been nice.

That being said, this game looks fantastic and controls just as well. there are some target issues when it comes to intense combat, but not too big of a deal. You can effortlessly flee on rooftops, jumping left and right without a care, the game flowing with just about everything you actually meant to do control-wise.

The story is complex but interesting, and the game can unfold at your own pace. You can explore, climb, collect, save citizens, ride horses, or just fight; Just expect to be in for at least 15-20 hours. Assassin's Creed is a nice take on a familiar genre, playing more in the realms of reality than say the 'magic powers' and 'flame-throwing sword'realm. It's def. refreshing, and the time-travel bits were a pretty cool surprise.

A solid, well-made, hassle free fun experience. Although it would have been awesome to see the cities at NIGHT instead of all being in the day. Oh well. Maybe next time.

Assassin's Creed - The true nextgen experience

First off..... Awesome game!! Totally awesome game. Ubisoft has taken what most call a gamble with this game and it has paid off and then some. The fact that you can pretty much do whatever you want in this game (non-linear gameplay) is what makes this game a shining start. The controls are good, graphics awesome and a very very good storyline. If you play this game the way it is meant to be played and not rush through it you will have no regrets. From assassinations, chases through streets and on buildings, the leap of faith. Assassin's Creed was asked to deliver and it did and then some. Only thing I have noticed is that it does get a tad bit repetitive at times but it's nothing major that's why I give this game a 9 out of 10.

Assassin's Creed - The true nextgen experience!!!

A very good piece of work.

Assassin's Creed is an action/stealth "flowerbox" game from Ubisoft Montreal, and a decent choice for anyone wanting something from stealthy meandering to rampant combat.

The gamer plays as Altaïr, a master Assassin, the right hand of the league of the Hashashin. A short way into the game, he fails an important mission, and breaks the three most important rules of the Assassin's Creed: Sparing of Innocents, Discretion of Action, and Keeping the Brotherhood Uncompromised. For this failure, he is demoted to the lowest rank of Assassin, but given a chance to redeem himself by killing nine important figures of the crusades.

Assassin's Creed is not one of the more graphics-intensive games, but the scenery is breathtaking, and the animation fluid and seamless. In the place of the perfection of graphics, we have a game with expansive and challenging gameplay. Altaïr must gather information on his targets by several means, and when ready, must kill his target.
The information gathering itself can be called repetitive, but the actual assassinations are all unique and can be accomplished in many ways: stealth is the default choice, but there is no stopping the player from slaying all the guards in a massive battle for one man's life.
The player's own style is supported with a strong combat system that relies on comboes, counterattacks, and timing. The stealthy can find ways to use "social stealth" advantageously. The acrobats can hightail it to the roofs, swiftly getting around, and swooping down to make a satisfying kill.

The versatility and beauty of Assassin's Creed can last for two days, if only the storyline. However, there are several side tasks, like collecting flags or killing templars, which can take the player through many more hours of interesting gameplay.

Assassin's Creed is by no means a perfect game, but the gameplay present rivals those of many better looking games, and should be a staple for anyone who can live without extensive use of the trigger finger.

Open yet goal oriented

This game is huge! While I'm certain it is possible to get through it with the minimum effort, those of us who are detail oriented can truly appreciate the scale of this game. From the small town of Masyaf to the huge area known as Kingdom to the large cities of Acre, Damascus and Jerusalem there is just so much to do. Each of these areas has optional things to do and for each optional goal you complete (collecting all the flags in one city or optional quests that are not directly story related) you get a bar in a 15 step ladder that gives you more health. More health is a good thing in a game where, as you can tell by the name, you do a lot of fighting. Between the optional and required completions, you can have as may as 20 bars on your health which starts at about 5. You'll also get better weapons and more impressive fighting skills as you go along, a crucial thing since the enemies increase in number and skill as the game goes on. The assassinations themselves can be done a number of ways from walking up behind a target (or dropping from a roof behind him) and slitting his throat to leaping at your foe with a well placed stab. Other methods of combat that are less stealthy are the long and short swords and throwing knives you get later in the game. Apparently the throwing knives replaced the crossbow that was depicted in the trailers for this game, but they work well for one of my favorite tactics which is roof based combat. Many locations in the city are more easily reached by climbing up the side of a building and running across the conveniently placed beams and such sticking out of the sides of various locations. With the exception of the water areas, where you have to aim carefully to avoid drowning (apparently this guy never learned to swim) running and jumping is done by simply holding the Right Trigger and A and as long as you are lined up with a roof or beam the running and jumping takes care of itself. Sometimes the roofs are guarded which leads to a fight that can be ended by either throwing your enemy off the roof (a tactic that can cause problems if they land near a guard on the ground) or a swordfight with tactics that vary based on the skills you have picked up at that point in the game. There are some impressive counter moves, with equally impressive results once you learn how to use them. Climbing high towers to see the city from above is a fun, and sometimes required, activity made even more fun by the "leap of faith" where you skillfully leap from the top of a protruding beam into a pile of hay far below. It's definitely a "don't try this at home" type of thing, and not for the height-phobic. The main story revolves around assassinating various people, which usually results in you running from the scene of the crime looking for a place to hide, an act which can be done stealthily or not. I've found that open combat with everyone in the area is the result of not being stealthy enough, though concentrating on the target and killing them does replenish your health for the resulting escape. The game uses checkpoints and autosaves, so it is difficult to control where you might be when you come back to the game later. In Kingdom, you will be where you last passed a checkpoint and in the cities you will probably start in the Assassin's Guild building. The game saves when you complete any objective, optional or otherwise, so I often find myself with the "just one more mission" mentality late into the night. With so much to do, all I can say is thank goodness for coffee!

The most refreshing game since Metal Gear Solid

I remember when Metal Gear Solid (MGS) came out for Playstation several (actually probably 10) years ago. There was a fair amount of anticipation prior to the release of the game. It was something different than your everyday FPS game. The game was based around stealthy recon and minimizing enemy encounters. Of course it was still a blast to run into a couple of guards and waste them with the famas or a strategically placed c4 but the point was that you had complete control over your strategy... you could do it however you wanted. The story line was captivating and really messed with your head throughout.

Assassin's Creed has taken this genre to the next level. Again you may accomplish your objectives however you wish, but now you have even more freedom to do so. Maybe there aren't as many cool gadgets and weapons as MGS but there are many aspects that make up for this shortfall. Of course the most obvious is freedom to go virtually anywhere in the city. You are free to roam every street, backalley, and rooftop. The fact that you can do this in 4 huge arenas just adds to the fun. Close attention was paid to detail of the city landscapes and the look and feel of the people in the cities. Another big step that Assassin's Creed has taken is in the AI interaction with the player. You can develop a 'reputation' if you start to cause disturbances and you can also gain some allies by helping people out. Granted the execution of this in game is overly simple (do this task to make allies) the idea is great and I'm sure will be built upon in future games.

Aside from the cutting edge game play the story is good. Not quite MGS good but never-the-less solid. And besides when you get tired of the story you can still spend hours just roaming the cities finding new hideouts and lookouts to enjoy the stellar graphics. I'll be honest and say that I have not yet beat the game but based on what I've seen so far it seems that it may play one's mind in the same way that MGS did. All in all a great game; one of the best on this platform to date.

A spectacularly designed game with an odd story arch...

Assassin's Creed (AC) is one of the great Xbox 360 games thus far. This is something that any fan of the genre and anyone looking to try something new should give shot.

The game is visually stunning and amazingly well detailed. Whether you're walking on the street or pearched high up on a tower looking over the cities, it is gorgeous.

The controls take a little getting used to but once you do, the chases and fight sequences really are spectacular. Even though this is really more of a RPG/Adventure type of game than a hack & slash...I found myself instigating fights in the later parts of the game just so I could use the fluid and beautiful fighting style.

Given all that was done well, I still need to give it two points of criticism. First is the voice acting. Everyone in the game does a great job except Altair. You'd think that the main character would be the one they nailed but the voice acting for him is pretty sad. The second piece is the overall story. I won't spoil it for you but having all this played out as the "genetic memory" of someone isn't really necessary. It would've been great just to go in as Altair with his backstory and motivations.

All in all I give it a solid recommedation.

Awesome gameplay. Awesome graphics.

I absolutely love this game. I am a huge gamer, but I have a problem with never being able to finish games once I start them. I always get bored or get enthralled with a different game. Not so with Assassins Creed. Although the training was a bit tedious, all of the skills that you learn you need in order to accomplish your missions in the expansive world that you travel in. Some may liken Assassins Creed to GTA, but there is a definitive storyline that you will eventually accomplish. I was unaware that this game was the beginning of a trilogy, so I was disappointed by the end. That being said, I can not wait for Assassins Creed 2!

Great but the ending sucked

I am a girl and I loved the game. I played it none stop since I got it--couldn't even put it down. It just captures you in a world of ancient and keeps you guessing the whole time. The ending was great but maddening. It just drops and YOU HAVE TO WAIT till the next game comes out. I am now excited for the next Assassin's Creed.
