it might grind your fingers

This game brings something new on the graphics departament, they are awesome , 3D cartoon like characters. The cities are huge also, and you can interact with almost anything on it , which gives the game a great sense of reality. The concept of the game's as cool as the characters are but the gameplay has serious flaws. First of all it's the camera which is not auto (at least on the import version) and you must correct it on every turn so you don't crash with anything that delays you (a wall or corner) and you don't have a aerial panning when you have to jump to a narrow space (a beam, and there's a lot of them). Speaking of jumps, the game's phisics doesn't help you either, i recap, your timing must be perfect to land on narrow spaces specially when you are pressed by a time trial (must frustrating), and when you jump it fells as if you were on the matrix. To finish, the controls aren't too responsive, so if you are going to play, play on small time intervals, so your fingers wont suffer, specially your right trigger finger (believe me on this). But if what you are looking for is a game with a radical new concept this is your game.

Fun but, over too quick

Jet Grind Radio is one of the the best games ever... while it lasts. It kept me hooked for about 2 days! After I beat it I played for about 2 more days and felt no need to play more. RENT IT.

This game is okay. The beats are great. The control is what basically ruins it. Not being able to control which tricks you do damages the game also. You could easily skip this game, or merely rent it before you buy it.

Great graphics, sound and repeaitive gameplay all in one

Fun for a while but got boring when you realise that its the samething over and over and over. A little more variety and some 2 player options would have made Jet Grind Radio a lot better.

Yet again the curse of many Dreamcast games has hit...its only fun for a while, no lasting appeal or repay value.

First of all I'm going to say this game is awesome I would have given it a 5 but there are a few little problems I had with it. I'm still going to say that if you have a Dreamcast go try and find this game. If you don't have a Dreamcast but you see a copy of Jet Grind Radio and you have a few extra bucks pick up the system and this will be one of the only games you will need in fact so far it's the only game that I own.(I bought it for $10 Canadian and I'm not sure what the exchage rates are right now.)

Stylish, But Not That Fun...

When I purchased my SEGA Dreamcast not too long ago, the first game I had in mind was Jet Grind Radio. Word of mouth said it was a stylish, fun, innovative game and well worth the purchase.

Well, that's only partially true.

See, while this game is very cool and stylish (with nice cel-shaded graphics and interesting character design, as well as fitting music and sound of acceptable - though not exceptional - quality), and undeniably innovative (the spray paint mechanics are original), it's just not that fun. Here's why.

When I started playing, I was expecting something far more fast-paced. But your character moves at a disappointingly-slow speed. Also, the spray painting system, while fun at first, becomes boring and somewhat irritating. It's no fun to have to repeat the same actions over and over again, and nothing is worse than being shot at while your in the middle of tagging a building or sidewalk.

I would only recommend this game to someone who was interested in studying its cool and bold art style, or a die-hard SEGA fan, but to everybody else: borrow it if you have the chance (assuming you have a friend with a Dreamcast). If you can't borrow it, Just forget about it.

Great concept with decent execution

Jet Grind Radio is yet another impressively creative title to come out of Sega (which is why I'm so fond of Sega), and definitely rates as a success.

The concept is simple, you skate around towns, tagging (spraypainting) certain objects while evading police officers, police dogs, rockets from helicopters, and other baddies. The animation style is really what cements the experience as being something out of the ordinary, though. Dubbed "cel-shading", the end result is something that looks very much like a cartoon. It's really beautiful to watch as well as play.

The gameplay is fun, but has some problems. The first, which likely everyone has addressed, is camera control. There are 3 unused buttons on the controller, and the developers still decided for some unknown reason to double up controls. It's annoying, but you learn to live with it. The other issue that bugs me is that you're constantly on the run from police with no real defense other than fleeing.

One other problem I have is with the menu system. When you boot up, you're given the choice of starting a new game, playing a tutorial, or loading an existing file. However, once you have a game in play (through creating a new game or loading), you have to reboot the system to load another. This is really a patently ridiculous feature and particularly annoying if you like alternating w/ a friend but keep seperate game files.

One other note I should make is that the worlds may seem smaller than they were described by other reviewers at first. I was pretty aggravated and disappointed for a while until I got far enough that I was actually given the opportunity to skate more or less freely without worry of harassment by police, etc.. It's a bit into the game, but worth noting if you get discouraged.

All in all, Jet Grind Radio is still a fantastic game, and definitely a game to get for the Dreamcast. There are minor points that really should have been taken care of, but other than that, a solid effort.

great fun

This game is all based around the element of fun. The game cannot be taken seriously. This game seems to be a cross between tony hawks and crazy taxi, which i think is a good thing as i have like both of those games. This game has a high novelty factor at first but it soons wears out as does your tolerance towards the gaming controls. Overall its worth buying if you just wanna have a bit of fun.

Stylish and fun, but not without its faults

Jet Grind Radio is truly an original game. In its plethora of innovations, there are only a few faults to be found. First of all, I should warn any would-be buyer that JGR is not exactly the type of game it appears to be. Although the game's concept certainly revolves around skating about different urban settings, it is not, at its heart, a racing or skating game (I would highly recommend Tony Hawk 1 or 2 for those who want a true skater). After playing for a while it becomes obvious that JGR is really more of a platform game in most ways, since the majority of the levels involve reaching new areas in which to leave your mark in the form of graffiti. The game has control that I can only describe as somewhat "floaty", and the execution of tricks is automatic, and without the variety I would have expected from a game that, at first, identifies itself as a skater.

With these few criticisms aside, Jet Grind Radio is an exceptional game in almost every category. Utilizing a new technique dubbed "cel shading", the multitude of characters and environments in this game come across as wholly unique. Although this graphical method seems simple enough (objects and characters are enveloped in a black outline), it gives the entire world and its inhabitants an almost hand-drawn feel. Expect to see this feature in many more games in the future as its presence here is simply gorgeous at times.

In addition to its graphical achievements, JGR delivers in the sound department too. Of all the tracks on the album, I found only the Rob Zombie song to be out of place and somewhat obnoxious. Don't be fooled by the description of the game music on the back of the jewel case; JGR's music can more accurately be called Quirky Hip-Hop, and not "Industrial". Regardless of its nomenclature however, JGR delivers hip beats that compliment both the graphics and style of the game even if you don't consider yourself a fan of the musical genre.

All in all, Jet Grind Radio is a very strong game in most aspects, and its lack of depth or tightness in control fade away in the presence of the sound and especially the graphics. This game was obviously created in pursuit of a unique style, and the developers have succeeded totally in this arena. JGR is highly recommended to all those looking for a very slick package that falls somewhat short in just a few areas. Have fun.

It's not perfect. The controls could use some work, and some of the levels are overly difficult.

But you can't help but laugh and smile while playing the game. It has a Parappa the Rapper quality. The gameplay isn't perfect, but the fun factor is absolutely over the top. Some of the Japanese tunes are a little quirky, but the majority are hip with deep beats that get even the most jaded gamer (and sister who hates video games) to tap their foot in unison.

Buy it. It's original. It's fun.
