Well the hype surrounding this game for almost the last year has been incredible. I've never seen a game have so much anticipation or hype as this one ever. Maybe for new systems, but never for a game itself. To truely appreciate it's strengths and truely understand it's faults though, you have to be familiar with the game and it's features. I wouldn't exactly hold an opinion of someone who never played Halo before this game higher than one that's been playing the game for about 4 years. I think the hype for this game was well deserved, because as it stands right now, this is the best FPS on any console. Period. It may have faults, but there isn't anything better out there.

So there are a lot of things that are different this type time around. Of course the standard features of better graphics, newer intesting levels, new weapons etc... have been added, but those aren't really what I was looking forward to. My intention was to see what level they had taken the game to in relation to the first. And let me say there are plenty of new features that expand upon those of the first game. The biggest deal is probably the Dual-weapon-weilding. It's been very well done using the x, y, left and right trigger buttons. There are some drawbacks to using to weapons though as you cannot throw grenades. But the fun of mixing and matching weapons to find your perfect combinations is quite fun. The controls have not changed that much, so if you know Halo 1, you're right at home. There are some weapons that are a bit too powerful (namely the sword) and some that have been weakened down a bit (the pistol), but that is to be expected with newer installments. The campaign mode, while shorter than the previous game, is quite fun while it lasts, but I do agree that you have to have the difficulty on heroic to have some kind of challenge. Still the overall play and additions to the game are great, and far better than the first, and the good definitely weighs out the bad.

However to truly enjoy and appreciate this game, you have to have X-Box live. If you do, then kiss your life goodbye, because you will spend so many hours of your life playing online against random opponents, you'll just never want to stop. The fun of killing and talking smack to people you don't know is really fun. Plus if all your buddies have the game and x-box live too, you'll mostly likely have lots of fun playing online. Speaking of your friends, the multiplayer mode on here is also amazingly better than the first game, and if you link up four x-boxs, then you will probably spend hours upon hours playing multiplayer. It's just that addicting. Not since 007 Goldeneye for N64 has a game had this addicting a mutliplayer. I don't see another first person shooter beating it.

So pick up Halo 2, or at least rent it to see if it's well worth your money. The special edition comes with a making of/special features DVD, that depends on your dedication to the game, may or may not be necessary. Like a reviewer before said, the only difference between this and the regular version is the DVD and Steel case. You can make the decisions between the regular or special addition, but if you like action or first person shooters, the Halo 2 is one game you do not want to skip.

Beyond any FPS ever

The game is really really good and not alot of games do what it does. The game keeps itself short and addictive and does't get so long that you want to throw it away and never play it again like Quake 2. Its good enough without Cheats (Hard to say for may other games) and replay value is massive.

Vehicles might of needed more use but you can do almost anything creativly, how fast you go through a level is up to you and if you just run, jump, grab a vehicle, shoot your way through and beat a level (Which is possible)then the game sucks yeah. but like Fable its your choice and if you want to beat the game so fast then do so.

Personally I tracked down every enemy and killed everything. Plus got to ride all vehicles, but it takes skill to grab a Banshee because they are usually near a Scorpion tank.

Dual wieldings done in like 2 other games (I think Time Splitters lets you do that with pistols... and Golden Eye does that) but those games are farly new as well.
Enemies have weaknesses (Which is non-existant in most FPS games) Sniper Rifles have a huge effect and difference in power.

Plus you can get many weapons and Stradegy is heavy for epic battles. Playing and beating the game unlocks sweet Multiplayer levels and if you thing Online sucks just use a System link to play against friends it is easier and cheaper to do that.

The game may be a Space Filler like MEGA MAN ZERO 2 for a Epic story. But it is still the best game around, plus the graphics are freaking DOOM 3 quality (Exept when alot of light is around) the Game could of needed a few more things but overall this game is like Halo, and is REALLY replayable!

Buy it for sure...

This game is fun,but hard

I am a HUGE halo fan. This game is fun, but VERY hard for some people. But the graphics are awsome, and its cool that you can be an elite for a change on some levels, including the last.I don't see why people didnt like that.
SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At the last level, prepare to be slaughtered endlessly by... a Brute. Those guys are HARD! You first see the brute when that poor elite commander gets torchered for the fall of Halo(I think they blame him for it cause he was the main elite commander. You know, the one in golden armor, with a plasma sword, who you kill about 5 times in the first halo). The Brute leads him to the torcher place, where they shock the elite, and use a brand or something on his chest. And the way he roars in pain, it's pretty obvious that it hurts. The Brute is FRICKIN HARD to beat.He has really strong shields, and he can kill you with one blow of his hammer, so you have to run around avoiding him on the floating platform until the snipers take out his shields and then kill him with a grenade or gun.Yup.Thats right. The humans and the covenant end up forming an alliance. Also, on the last level, you play as the Elite who gets torchered. And you get to see an elite with no armor! They look so...gentle...and harmless. And when the elite is torchered, you get to see a prophet, brutes, and some elites with AWSOME armor on, especially the head gear. Its very different than normal elites armor. But in this game, you have your shields thing, but no health points.Which allows you to get killed easily.Overall, its a fun game, but short and hard.I give it a 4 out of 5.

Multiplayer is good but story mode sucks

For halo 2 I thought that the game would be good but when I finally played the game I found out that the campaign sucks! At first the game was good but when I found out that there was another Halo I was really pissed off because that just means that the flood are back and you have to stop the ring from activating. The worst part though was the ending. The ending sucked. If the game designers could only put one more level into the game it probably would have been better (i am not going to say the ending for people who want to see it themselves). This also meant that every halo fan has to wait another 3 years for Halo 3 to come out.
The multiplayer makes up for the bad story mode because now you can customize your character even more and the multiplayer mode can be customized more too. You can also use the banshee (small alien ship)and it has more flight capabilities than the banshees in the first halo game. There are also many more weapons that you can use and more levels. And for people who like elites more than spartans you can use the elites in multiplayer (and for some levels in story mode). Overall I think that bungie did a good job for Multiplayer mode but not for story mode...

My now-13-year-old son eagerly awaited the sequel to Halo. I too secretly anticipated it's availability as I have played many times with my son and have come to enjoy the game. Halo 2 was as good as Halo with some minor exceptions.

PRO:
- Great story line. The cut scenes and follow-on action blend well.
- Longer opportunities to drive Marine tank.
- New flight controls for Banshie.
- Ability to drive Alien Tank.
- Ability to hijack vehicles.

CON:
- Banshie inability to go 'backwards'
- No link play!
- Too dark in many places. For my degrading eyes anyways.

Should this tide us over until Halo3 on Xbox2

Yes yes and yes we know this game suffered mostly by way of hype-
bomb syndrome. Essentially the creative marrow of Bungie's Mac base
jumped ship halfway through this project and the Microsoft bigwigs
stepped in and said that this is going to be the game that will serve as
the ramp to get consumer kids onto Xbox Live. Because of that chapters
of the game that would have made the game more substantial and
meaningful in a Star Wars operatic way were lobotomized. The most
disappointing thing of all is that this is going to be the last Halo release
on Xbox 1 and yes you will need to buy xbox2 to see how the trilogy
ends in Halo3.

At least there's always the original for multi-player. . .

Having prolonged the release of HALO 2 month after month, I expected more.

Don't get me wrong, the Campaign is an excellent piece of work. The multi-player, however, is lacking in several respects. The original was smoother and the graphics were better. And, can I ask why the frag grenades suddenly evolved into bouncing balls??? Also, the new covenant carbine and sniper need a lot of work, totally unoriginal and too much like Star Wars Battlefront gear. The detail of the weaponry (such as in the orginal) is lacking considerable depth. And, WHY did Bungie even experiment with the .45 Caliber from the original HALO? The new "magnum" is a piece of junk. . .the zoom is horrendous and extemely disappointing. The "playability" of HALO 2 in multi-player is exceptionally disappointing. Some of the boards are too tight to manuever and it would have been nice to see a better use of the environments. The boards in HALO 2 are not intuitive like its predecessor, HALO. Multi-player in the original HALO is far more fun and detailed. And, the original is also far more free flowing.

After waiting two years I expected more. . .a lot more.

Why doesn't Bungie separate the two game scenarios? Have one LONGER and more detailed CAMPAIGN version and another version that is STRICTLY for Multi-Player use, thereby utlizing the full data available on a single disc. . .

Don't believe the hype, this could have been a lot better. . .

Good thing this game didn't come out when it was intended to, it would have been a COMPLETE disappointment.

This game is Unbelieveable! When i first placed it into the xbox, i knew exactly what i was expecting....perfection. There was NO point in this game where I second guessed this.....well, maybe one.

The graphics: Wonderful! They bumped mapped everything here, making it look so, so, wonderful. A little more gritty then the (also oh-so great) Ninja Gaiden, but still wonderful.

The Gameplay: Similar to the Original Halo, or any first person shooter. The main thing here are the vehicles, and Great Googily Moogily there are plenty. The levels are more packed with vehicles. Many levels are actually Vehicle oriented. One major annoyance i had is the lowerd armor. All you have this time 'round is your shields. Makes for more realism......therefore more deaths

The Sound: Holy good damn! The sound effects are fantastic. Not quite Lucas Arts "Star Wars" good, but it defineltly puts you in the mood. The music is something of a wonder also. The main theme kinda sticks to you, and kinda gets you kind of emotional.......Yeah? WELL IT DOES FOR ME! Ahem! Anyways. During a cool fire fight, cool music usually pops in, and you get SO pumped up. So pumped up you do stupid things and die.

The Story: Hardly anyone mentions the fantastic story in, and around the Halo series. The first Halo had little story. Halo 2 on the other hand EXPLODES with it. Told, mainly through cut scenes, is the story of your side, and that OTHER side as well. The Covenent are gvin very distinct human qalities, and as the stry unfolds, you begin to feel simpathy for them. You'll undertand by the first cutscene. There is a crap load of symbolism in there.

Overall: This is an extraordinary game. At first, I thought this game would be destroyed by all the hype.....but it dufinely surpassed all my expectancies. BUY IT NOW!

Game of the Year?

Next to Half-Life 2, I'd say yes. O God yes.
