Amazing game, but the glitches ruin it!!!

Up until the very ending, POP: WW was an outstanding addition to the POP legacy. Stunning visuals, detailed environments, amazingly fluid animations and lotsa eye candy nearly brought this to a five out of five. But when it comes to some parts the glitches will ruin it. For example, glitches will usually happen when you take a portal back or forward in time (usually just after you've done something important like defeated a boss. Go figure!). What sorts of glitches? Well the one I found just before i entered a part with the absolute final boss. I was eger to see how the Prince's latest adventure would end. So he pushes her through the portal and the scene ends and i'm playable again. Obviously i have to go after her through the portal. So I enter the portal. Nothing happens. I'm just standing there like a complete goober in this sand vortex thingy. I turn the Playstation off and start 'er up again. Same damn thing happens. Now I have to start a whole new freakin' game! I'm guessing that the glitches happen on a matter of luck. And apparently mines all gone at the moment. Don't let this fact drive you away, but jeez! How bad can your luck be? In the overall department, a 2/5 for me. Glitch testers, stop half-assing your jobs and do them right, damn it!!!

The first thing you notice is how much darker this title is; the Prince has gone from nimble acrobat to nimble acrobatic bad-ass fighting machine. He's found time to change his clothes. Out goes his princely flowing M.C. Hammer pants and in comes some leather fetish gear, he's sporting a scar and he must have started smoking or something because his voice has gone all Bryan Adams. His surroundings? Again suitably dark and this time accompanied by a heavy metal soundtrack.

Graphically, as you would expect, this title is very polished, the intro sequence sucks you straight in and you're thrown into the heart of a battle immediately - albeit without any of your time manipulating powers at this stage. This first battle is excellent and shows off the graphics a treat, as you're involved in a mass brawl on a boat that rises and tilts as you charge around it. Random fireballs crash down into the boxes around you, the rain pours relentlessly and the enemies come thick and fast, even when there's too many to mention on screen battling it out with your allies, there's not a hint of glitch or slowdown. It's breathtaking to watch. The gore level has been ramped right up and you get a lot more satisfaction from slicing your opponents to pieces this time. Even my girlfriend managed to sit there and watch it quietly without moaning at me to turn it off for a good five or ten minutes. Right until I got to the first boss, when something unexpected happened.

It's not long before you realise that rather than addressing the problem of game length by making this outing much bigger, they've just made it much, much, MUCH, harder. This is hard with a capital H.A.R.D. I played Ninja Gaiden, I clocked it, I damaged a controller (and my wall) by throwing it across the room but I still did it. [Ah yes, my controller almost left my hands so many times during that gem! Ed] This is tougher. I lost count of the amount of times I tried and retried to defeat even this first boss. I had to wuss out and start the game again on Easy eventually (after my girlfriend said "this is boring turn it off" ten times). So be warned, only the most competent and patient of gamers should give this a go and that's why it doesn't score quite as high as its accessible-to-all predecessor.

Once this bit's over, you're introduced to the game properly and as you progress at about just the correct pace, your time manipulating powers are given back to you. The basic premise of the storyline sees you going back in time to destroy the sands of time before they were ever created and all the while you're pursued by a spooky, mean guardian chasing you around everywhere. I liked the idea of this and the fact that early write-ups suggested you can go back, change something and when you Marty McFly it back to the future, things have changed also really interested me. This element was nowhere near as detailed as promised though and if anything just seemed like a way of forcing you to do each room repeatedly in different time periods, another cop out way of increasing the game length.

At the heart of the game, as before, are some excellently realised platform sections and even more fluid control of your character. No more having to remember to put your weapon away before you embark on some acrobatics - you're straight into the action. These sections of the game excel once again and are as good as everything offered in Sands of Time; it's just such a shame that there weren't more of them. With this being a meaner, moodier version of the original, you find yourself spending a lot more time brawling. Which other than the difficulty of the bosses and the fact that the acrobatic sections are so fresh and satisfying to complete, is no bad thing.

The fighting system has been given an overhaul in a big and impressive way. You can now wield and battle with two weapons, or throw one at an enemy if it takes your fancy. You can bounce off walls, swing around poles slicing multiple opponents, throw and jump on your enemies and of course drive a weapon through them while they lie stunned on the floor. The whole system feels more akin to an actual fighting game than an action platformer. Perhaps another bit of inspiration taken from Ninja Gaiden. The list of moves and combos you can play with seems endless, which is a good thing because you'll need them all. You can't win this game by button bashing - it takes practice and commitment.

This is complemented by your ability to play around with time again, rewinding it and slowing it down to give you an advantage or get you out of a sticky situation. As with the first game, this just feels natural to do, the way each command is mapped out to each button is excellent, I've never played a game where you have a character with such a diversity of moves at his disposal that controls so intuitively as Warrior Within.

If you loved the original but found it too easy, then give The Prince of Persia: Warrior Within a go, as it's sure to please. If you loved Ninja Gaiden you'll definitely like this. If you haven't played Sands Of Time before and are thinking of buying Warrior Within, you'd be well advised to give it a rent and see how you get on. I liked this a lot, I just though it was such a shame that there wasn't more game there (although the extra content should add a few hours). I hope that next time we see the Prince, it's in a massive, epic adventure where the acrobatics outweigh the fighting and the learning curve and difficulty level are more realistic. Either way, the quality of both titles so far is so excellent that it justifies, no demands, a third in the series!

what a cool game this is!!!!

this game really is awsome, if you have played sands of time you will be exited about playing the game before even touching the controller.....for those who havnt played sands then i recomend it, the story will make a lot more sense and much more enjoyable. there were parts of the game i thought could have been improved on....this came mainly in the form of some of the landscapes, the dungeons and the library inparticular.......they could be a little dull and annoying, especially if you die and have to repeat them!!! its a great game to play once its been back in its box for a few months....playing it a second time round you have a better understanding of the fighting control system.....combo's can be tricky but look great when pulled off nicely, also they are not really a necessity of the game so if you get frustrated easily by not being able to pull them off....then you can just beat the bad guys with a few simple attacks (repetative but effective). the bad guys are cool and the dahaka (a huge demon whos only mission is to hunt you throughout the game and kill you!!!) injects a shot of adrenaline whenever he apears and starts chaseing you. the soundtrack is good......when it comes to the look of the game, i dont think it can be compared to sands of time, its completely different (darker and meener), as much as i loved the look of sands, i think that if this looked the same then the beauty of the game would wear off....each game is best left looking individual from the next (or last)....and i have already reserved a copy of the third pop installment......cant wait!!!

This game by far is better than a gold jet-car.

This game is so awesome you can explain it in no words. It is so cool I urge to go buy it right now. See what I mean? Even the storyline is awesome, in a dark and mysterious way. The new fighting system will just blow your head off. GO. BUY. NOW. I mean Ubisoft really did about the best job EVER. The beautiful scenery is quite nice if you don't happen to be bootin' some head at that particular moment.

Like Sands of Time, but darker

Warrior Within is very similar in style to the Sands of Time but is darker, more violent, has some minor sexual overtones and a more interesting story line. The most exciting part of the game to me is when the Dahaka starts chasing you. Often times you don't know exactly when he's gonna find you, so it makes the game suspensful and a tad bit scary. I seriously start freaking out when I hear the music start. For the most part the puzzles are easy, and you can pick up the game after not playing it for months and still basically know what you're doing. My biggest complaints are that sometimes when you're in the middle of jumping or running they change the view on you and it sometimes screws me up, and sometimes the perspective is a little off so it makes it hard to see where you are suppose to go. Also, I really don't like blood and guts and sometimes when you do a special sword move on an enemy they put it in slow motion - like do I really need to see this guys head come off in slow motion?! Yuck! I usually would never buy a game with the Mature rating, and I can see why it got this rating, but a lot of times you are killing non-humans, like monsters and weird animals, so it doesn't bother me too much.

I gave it 5 stars, but I still would not recommend this game for children or let my children play it because it is dark, violent, can be gory and the few sexual overtones.

Deeper, Darker, Better

I would say so.

Story:

The Prince returns forever changed. Driven by the will to live, changed by the constant running from the Dahaka and living in fear, the Prince makes his way through a horrid, dangerous, trap-ridden Fortress to stop the Sands of Time from ever being created and preventing his own death by defying fate. The game sets up to include plenty of twists.

Game play:

Most defiantly the most innovative part of the sequel. The Prince is now equipped with moves that make Dante (Devil May Cry) look soft. With his highflying moves and acrobatics, he can jump over, slice, slash, or impale an enemy. With the new Free-Form fighting, you can create your own fighting style. Linking combos to lob off an enemies head, or (the best enemy) run up an enemies back and slash up its head.

One of the more annoying parts of the game, would be running through the Fortress to do some outrageous puzzle (I love the puzzles) only to open something on the other side of the Fortress. That's about my only complaint.

Sound/Graphics:

Not much to say about the graphics. They're good, but not great. They are, however, much better than PoP: SoT, that is to say, the texture quality and character animations. The FMV's are short but sweet. Not like FFX awesome, but they get the point across. Music, like the infamous song I Stand Alone by Godsmack, from the commercial plays twice so far. Once during the (idled) opening title and when you are being chased by the Dahaka. The chase scenes are quite fun and very fast paced. One goof or wrong timing, and he's gotcha.

Summary:

The game play is with a doubt the best feature of this game. When I play, like one reviewer hinted at, I seem to notice how truly dark and gruesome the Prince has become. I want to play more, just to watch his paranoia and agility at work. If you liked the first, I think you'll like the second, especially if you like a full 360-degree turn around on character development.

Despite all the bad things I've heard about this game I had to pick it up. People said the Prince is unresponsive, uncontrollable, and rude. Well, wouldn't you be rude if some kind of horrible beast was chasing you? I'm not going to bother writing the story here because tons of other submissions have it. The thing (well one of the things) I like the most is that this game has an ALTERNATE ENDING!! WOOHOO!!! All you have to do is find all nine life upgrades and get the new sword in the throne room and boom! There you have it. (Hint: For those of you who have seen it, the woman strapped to the piece of wood held by the mean-looking scary guys? It's FARAH!! Bring on Prince of Persia 3. Ciao!)

I like to write short reviews so here we go. It's a great game. The story line is great, the music is great, the graphics are awsome and yes... I hate to admit it but the Price is hot!

Tsk Tsk. Prince of Persia the Sands of Time as a wonderful game, full of fun things to do, a good plot line and other things. But THIS, this peice of crap is graphic and full of bad language. This is the kind of game society has morphed into. The gore, the voilence. This game is for little kids or losers who think that killing is funny. Theres no need for this type of a game.
