The Definition of the Action-Fighting Genre

Either the people below who gave it 1's and 2's didn't even play the game, or there is something seriously wrong with their brain chemistry. When the suprise hit Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time came out i was immediately hooked with its breathtaking visuals, mindboggling gameplay and combat system, and its fluid animations and character designs. When I heard that Prince of Persia 2 was coming later in the year, i was ecstatic. But scared as well. How could you improve on something that was without a doubt THE fighting-adventure game? By completely overhauling it of course.

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within has the greatest combat system EVER. Entitled "Free-Form Fighting," every single thing you do can have a nearly infinite number of outcomes. You can take a human shield Splinter Cell style and then flip them head over heels off a cliff to their doom, steal their weapon and then run then through with it, chop off their heads (did i mention that more blood is spilled in this game than Jack the Ripper could spill in a whore-house?), slice them down the middle, and so many other things. The possibilities are endless.

Now for the story line. I like it. I like it a lot. So far as I know, several years have passed since Sands of Time. The Prince, now grisled and grim, is on the run from a physical incarnation of Fate called the Dahaka. The beast is chasing the Prince because he opened the Sands of Time, and anyone who does that is supposed to die. The Prince didn't die, so the Dahaka is out to finish the job. The Prince's only option is to travel to the Island of Time, the birthplace of the Sands. He must travel back in time to before the Sands were created by the Empress and stop it from happening. But, as everyone tells him, he cannot escape his fate, no matter what, he will die. Now you're probably making a double-take on the "travel back in time" bit. Although you do retain the ability to travel back a few seconds to undo a mistake or two, there are portals that can send you back or forth centuries. Anything you do in the past can have an impact in the future, making it possible to reach some place you couldn't before.

Last but not least (yeah, I know, but I'm almost done.) Prince of Persia is M-rated. Why? Blood, gore, and extremely scantily clad women. Seriously, like thirty seconds in you see a hot lady's bare [...]. And what's more, you get to fight her. What more could you ask for? Overall, Prince of Persia exceeds all expectations. From the visuals to the moveset to the women, you will dig this game all the way to the end (which I have yet to reach.) Ok, bye. I have to go beat the game now. Toodles!

You won't want to stop!

This game is fantastic!I mean, you get to slash enemys in half, use stealth for a sneaky fight, you get to walk on walls, and much much more.I like how you can replenish your health by simply drinking a handful of water. The rewind button is cool, so if you snuff it, you can go a little ways back without restarting the whole level. There are so many sweet characteristics for this game, it's almost impossible to list them all. I wouldn't recommend this game game to young children though, with all the profanity and blood and stuff like that. I would have rated this game this game T for teen, if it didn't have all the stuff listed above. But overall, I think this game deserves five stars.

An Outstanding Game.

First of all, I actually buy very few games. A game has to be a 5 star choice to me in order for me to buy it, which means not only will I enjoy it the first time, but I'll find myself playing it over and over again. That being said, this is one of those games. Don't believe all the people moaning about the "M" rating - they are either under 18 or have an unrealistic view of the maturing of the video game market. I played the first Prince of Persia, and although I thouroughly enjoyed it, I found it was somewhat lacking - namely, not enough fighting and a little too much puzzle solving. It also was just a little too cheerful looking for my taste. This game takes the things I loved about the first game, and improves on them. Much more fighting, as well as a more complex fighting mechanic. The tone of the whole game is also darker and more gloomy. And the graphics are much improved, and the cut scenes are fantastic. In other words its a game more geared toward an adult audience. I have enjoyed this game thoroughly so far, and add it to Onimusha 3, Final Fantasy X, LOTR:TTT and LOTR:ROTK as the only games I have purchased for my PS2 in recent history.

Not at all dissapointed...

I have Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and I Like it, but the major faults with it are the camera, fighting and the prince looked like a ponce, becouse of his hair and clothes (the pants made him look like a goat). But POP:SOT was still a good game overall.

I heard about POP:WW coming out and I was really excited becouse I heard it was a much darker sequel.

It is. You start off the game with the prince running away from a vicious beast, showing off brilliant cutscene graphics. You are then on a ship, fighting against unknown demons, with a thong-wearing (human)woman leader.

Ok, now its time for the review to start

GAMEPLAY:
10/10- The acrobatic moves are mind boggelingly cool! They really will amaze you! The fighting is HUGELY IMPROVED! The Combos you can pull off are amazing and get better and better as the game goes on. There are a variety of different weapons on offer, such as axes, daggers and mases. YOU CAN EVEN HOLD TWO WEAPONS!!! If you see an enemy far away, you can throw a weapon at him and you can see his head chopping off!

GRAPHICS:
9/10- The strong point of Sands Of Time, they are even MUCH BETTER in this game! When you use the time powers, the screen blurring is amazing.

LIFESPAN:
8.5/10- It will keep you hooked for over a month becouse of the extra unlockables hidden in-game!

OVERALL:
This game will not disapoint, as long as you stick with it, as some puzzles might be very hard and frustrating at the start, but it becomes second nature later.

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST ACTION/PLATFORMER GAMES EVER!!!

The wait is over. Was it worth it?

First of all I wish to thank you, as a reader, for finding my preview helpful in the XBOX and the GameCube review section (You can check it out if you want to) . Now that I got my hands on the game and played it , I must say that Prince Of Persia:Warrior Within has lived up to the expectations, albeit with some difficulty. Let me briefly state why Prince of WW, though a great game on its own, falls below its predecessor in some aspects.

First, the cons. In the preview, I did mention that the environment in Warrior Within would be the exact opposite of Sands of Time (SOT), and it is. But Ubisoft has taken one step further and encompassed nearly the entire game in a perpetual state of bleakness. Right from the onset, the story is grim but gritty. Somewhere deep down, you'd realise this will be an uncomfortable shift of play from the previous version. Sands of Time was an ethereal experience that didn't force you to take the game too seriously. You enjoyed playing it, without actually feeling so. But in WW, you are constantly forced to ask just why the Prince is not the same likeable, naive guy we know. In WW, he appears self-centered, merciless almost paranoid of his safety and wouldn't think twice of striking down anyone so long as it ensures his survival. This really makes you wonder whether to root for him or despise him. But you cannot ignore him. Because POP: WW has far more positive offerings than most other famous sequels in the market.

Story:

The story is very interesting. 10 yrs down the line, after the events of the first game, the Prince is a self-outcast : having honed his already formidable skills in countless battles to achieve supreme combat mastery. But since the Prince invariably 'cheated' death (or fate, rather) and altered the flow of time, an indestructible incarnation of fate called the "Dahaka" is after him to restore order and settle scores once and for all. There is no means to escape it. The Prince must now travel across the treacherous seas and locate the Island of Time, where he must prevent the Empress from creating the Sands of Time, thus forever destroying the effects of SOT and the Dahaka's existence a well. It is paradoxical, no doubt, but the events that move the game forward really pull u into it.

Gameplay, Graphics and Sound:

What can I say about the gameplay that I haven't already covered in the preview. It is really innovative and fluid. The Prince may be vulnerable, but he has outstanding abilities. This leaner, meaner Prince has received some real makeover in combat. A number of new basic slashing techniques have been added and more specialized moves will follow once you come across new weapons. Ubisoft has put its maximum effort into this area and the result is there to see. Though not as deep as say Ninja Gaiden , the combat is nonetheless engaging. There are a multitude of weapons and all have varying degrees of damage. Furthermore, the Prince has an ability to impale a foe by throwing his secondary weapon. I have absolutely no second opinion regarding gameplay. It is fresh and fun and it is completely different from the first title.

As for the graphics, WW stays true to its roots, adding greater texture detail and enhanced character animation. WW has superb soft lighting (or is it bloom lighting?) that is on par, if not better than SOT. The fortress itself is daunting in appearance, but WW has added a new concept to time reversal wherein you can jump to and fro the same locale but in different time periods. So if a room appears decayed and dirty in the present, it would look plush and pristine in the past. The effect is surreal. The XBOX hands down shows better loading and graphical performance. But WW has been coded to perform optimally in any console so you should find yourself enjoying it no matter what u have. Certain locales like the Palace gardens , share the same awe-inspiring feeling as in SOT. The developers thankfully have been faithful to the game's look, but it does have some issues in character's facial modelling and frame rate, but that's all. The in-game FMVs show respectable animation which by default should be, in a game of this scope. All in all, POP:WW is every bit, if not more grand in appearance than its predecessor. Lovely.

As for the level design, which was the heart and soul of SOT, WW has its brilliant moments in spades. The traps are more treacherous and intelligently placed. Certain Palace levels take your breath away. Also, the basic platforming hasn't changed and the Prince has some new moves like grabbing onto a curtain and split-jumping onto a platform. But for some reason, platforming now appears 'forced' into play rather than being part of the overall experience. This is sad and considerably reduces the overall excitement. It is reasonably enough to say WW took platforming as a means to move from one area to another while the brunt of the time goes to combat.
Sound in one word : Fair. Nothing more than that. The ambient sounds are solid, but the score is disappointing. Some hard rock theme by Godsmack I cant place at all. Be assured that WW will not be known for its soundtrack, though it is dynamic in combat. The score has to grow on you. And to an extent , it does. I find the theme song in the opening menu display to be absoltely superb. Overall, I stand by what I said at the start.

The game however is longer and open-ended. The enemies are also much varied than before and they do fight with some AI. And they are definitely a great improvement from SOT. Faster and harder. But once you get to know their tactics, they are quite easy to dispose off. One move whereby you can throw your foe off the cliff, makes things ridiculously simple. Ultimately, what u get the first time through, is pretty much it.

Overall, my review seems to point out more cons than pros. To an extent yes, because Prince of Persia:Warrior Within is like a Ferrari with some dirt spots on the hood. You see the spots first, though it's the fantastic car that you should be looking at. It is more like an abberation than being intentional. But it is still obvious to look at. And that is a bit disconcerting. The Prince has changed a lot and his personality hits you in the guts. Nevertheless WW is one hell of an achievement. Ubisoft, in just one year, has managed to change the franchise completely and still deliver a kick-ass adventure. The combat and the graphics alone are sufficient to carry it through. Once you sit in the drivers's seat, everything else is just a blur and you wont care what 'spots' it has. I suggest you buy this game, for it does have enjoyable enhancements that would have taken other titles years to implement. The developers have listened to some pertinent suggestions but ignored others. Yet they have undoubtedly treated us to a worthy sequel, rounding of an amazing year in gaming (Halo 2, Half Life 2, Ninja Gaiden , Chronicles of Riddick and the like...). Let us hope the Prince brings us another rendition that will stay true to the beauty and grandeur of Sands of Time and Warrior Within.
Have a nice day.

Classic, dont compare to SOT.

Firstly, this game is designed to appeal to the mainstream market. You still have the first games acrobatics, but also some great action. You may be disapointed at how the game has lost Sands of Time' charm.

I have played this games first level in it's early stages, and it wasn't that bad. If the final hasn't changed too much, I will get it. Be warned, there is intense violence and lots of blood. I don't know why the producers had to put so much blood in it, as well as a half naked girl. If you have a mature kid under 17, you should consider this game. Otherwise, be heisitant. I think this game does deserve to be rated M, but I think it's content has yet to get to the level of Halo 2 or GTA San Andreas. So don't just look at the rating and say no, there is much more to consider. I love this game fully, but could only give it 3 stars for some content that only made some fans turn away. If your over 17, don't heisitat, and buy it right away.

Enjoyable Game

Yes it tends to be an easier game if you are a skilled player, but that is why there is a option for the advanced player. I really liked this game because of the storyline, it is very easy to follow. One of the reviewers said that it was hard to navigate where you are supposed to go, I think that is one way that the game was challenging, if you get lost and suddenly die from the Dahaka that is chasing you, you learn not to go that way again. Overall I thought that the designers of the game brought a lot of thought into this installment of The Prince of Persia and look forward to seeing that they come up next, if you finished the game and saw the ending then you would know what I mean with the Sands feature. I really liked the addition to the game of subtitles, a lot of complaints were made about that you could not hear the dialogue from SOT, this time you are able to read what they are saying and understand what the task must be done in this game. I do agree that the shelf price is a bit pricey but if you can buy it cheaper go ahead, you will enjoy this game.

An epic story in a legendary saga

Apparently no one has played the same Warrior Within game that I've played. Anyone who says this game is a bad one does not deserve to play video games or much less write reviews about them. The Prince of Persia series is an incredible trilogy with three extremely different games. Warrior Within is the second in the trilogy and the best of them all. This game is not for the faint of heart, it is very dark and morbid storyline and the gameplay is exactly the same. The Prince in this story is far different from the one in The Sands of Time. The Prince has been stalked and hunted for years by an immortal and terrible beast known as the Dahaka, and he has become a drained and callous man who has almost been broken by his own demons and by the curse that has plagued his every breath. This game is one of the best games I've ever played and I have played the best of the best. Don't listen to all these misguided reviews by these would be gamers, Warrior Within is amazing. The gameplay is incredible from the fighting to the wall running and problem solving. Another beautiful part of the game is the graphics. The landscapes in this game are truly gorgeous. As you progress through the game and climb higher into the castle you can look down below and actually see other parts of the castle that you have already visited earlier in the game, it's truly amazing. The chase sequences with the Dahaka are extremely intense and keep you white knuckled with the controller the entire time. The music, like the first game, is perfect. Godsmack's song, I Stand Alone, cranking through the speakers while you run for your life adds a very nice touch. But above all the story is what pushes this game beyond most all others. The fmv sequence with the Prince and the Old Man is probably the best and is my personal favorite, but all the fmv are quite impressive, involving, and extremely fun to watch. The whole idea behind the Prince being hunted by an unstoppable force and running from his destiny but also trying to change his doomed fate at the same time is pretty hardcore. I can't even explain how cool and just bada** this game is. The whole series is one of the best stories I've ever played, seen, or read, but Warrior Within is by far the most engageing, macabre, and epic of all the three. If you're looking for an unbelievably fun and adventurous game that is full of amazing gameplay, graphics, and whose story is probably one of the top ten of all time then this is a must buy for you. If Warrior Within sounds to dark and brutal for you then you should probably stick to the kiddie games made for children like final fantasy.

This sequel to the PS2 game of the year was just as good as the first. The gameplay has changed a little. Now there is something called the free form fighting system. This new fighting system enables you to pull off powerful moves with button combos. The Warrior Within also has a much darker and mature attitude than the first game did. The storyline is pretty well done and the enemies are cool too.
This game also offers more weapons as you progress through the game. There is even a hidden boss.
