Mario has lost his way since the days of the 8 bit nintendo. While Super Mario Galaxy is an improvement from Sunshine, I think that Mario 64 is better than Galaxy. The best of the Super Mario series of course being 1 and 2.
I found the orientation of Galaxy to be disorienting and uncomfortable. As Mario, you move from planet to planet as levels. The object typically being to find and collect the Super Star. Each planet is like a ball that you run around on, but the camera does not change perspective. [..]
Graphically, this game looks good for a Wii game, though only somewhat better than what you would expect from a Gamecube. The music scores are orchestrated, but uninspired. The music from the old 2D Mario games were much more spirited.

I've played through the first ground level of levels and have just recently opened up the top floor of the flying "house". I haven't experienced too bad of camera work. If i do i just push the button that will re-adjust it and that usually does the trick.
This game is a lot like Mario 64 (go through the doors play each level 6 times to get all the stars doing different things for different stars) only instead of door ways you are going to the same galaxy. Thats what i liked about Mario 64. Different challenges on the same levels. Each area of the "house" (there is a kitchen, bedroom and such as they call it) has 5 galaxies some are "bonus" type where you get to do just one challenge. Like racing on a Ray through water in the sky. So if you didn't like Mario 64 you may not like this one because it's very very much the same.
If you play it right you can get to the point of where you no longer really need to go to the same galaxy over and over to beat Bowser or Bowser Jr. That way you have more rooms of the "house" open as to not get bored playing the same levels over and over getting all the stars.
There are commets that come into play making the level "harder" (giving your enemies more speed, or time frame and such) if you are standing on the main floor right at the start to your left there is a star that for 20 star bits will move the commet for you so if you don't want to play that round with the commet there you don't have to. But if you move it you won't get that "extra" star from beating a level with a commet. Up to you.
After awhile it's kind of the same thing over and over, but like i said if you open up multiple rooms you can scurry around and do different galaxies for a long time. Mario is all about being the hero so why not make him save everyone? Given games are like movies you want to like the story line...so many people in distress for Mario to save.

While there might be many games this holiday season potential buyers would rather pick up than this latest Mario title, they all rest solidly in other genres be they FPSs(Gears of War, Halo 3, Metroid Prime 3, etc.) or RPGs(Mass Effect). As far as platformers and good old fashioned fun goes, nothing can touch Super Mario Galaxy.
Story is of course non-existant in any real capacity, so let's put that aside right away. But considering it's a Mario game, does anyone really care? Graphics are top notch, and they used the Wii hardware perfectly to bring you a game that easily matches other console releases, this was clearly what they had in mind when they developed the console. Sound and music is classic Mario, and while it has a number of new tracks you will be playing many levels to the tune of classic Mario songs gathered from virtually every one of his games.
Now for the good stuff. Gameplay. That is of course where Mario shines. Taking a step back from weird gadgets and weapons present in many recent Mario releases, from the water gun of Sunshine infamy, flipping from 2d to 3d in Super Paper Mario, or even Luigi's ghost busting Vacuum, Mario returns with little more than the shirt on his back and the same controls as Mario 64. Instead of taking gimmicks such as these and plopping Mario down in generic platformer land #2,718, the developers instead focused on building the game around level design. And they couldn't have nailed it better. It is hard to describe how flawlessly they have pulled off the level design in this game, with every level being unique to itself while building upon the mechanics of earlier zones. This is something you have to experience for yourself to really understand the amazing job they did with level design. Even the somewhat tacked on mini-game levels are extremely fun, if sometimes the most frustratingly of the lot for various reasons.
Unfortunately while I'd love to heap nothing but praise upon the game for horus on end, it does have a few flaws. Level of difficulty being far too easy, resulting in a somewhat short experience, being the foremost While obtaining all the stars in Mario 64 seemed at times daunting, gathering the 120 present in Galaxy was a somewhat run of the mill task. With the exception of one or two retardedly difficult levels(Toy Time Purple coins, ugh), most Stars required very little effort to obtain, and even secret stars were very easy to locate and virtually always obvious in a level by the presence of a feedable little star man thing. I also had a slight Super Paper Mario flash back in the running around between observatories(the jump off points for the individual levels), as it was often overly time consuming. The comet system was also rather pointless, and just added an unneccessary limitation to which stars you could go after at any one time - and while it was possible to move them to get where you wanted to go by the time you talked to the Star who moves it around enough times you could have collected a few stars his dialogue is so bulky! Well, that is an overstatement, but it's still annoying. Fortunately, the flaws are all superfluous to actual gameplay within the levels, so doesn't affect the fun factor when you are actually playing.
Overall, Super Mario Galaxy is an amazing game, and the answer to every classic platform lover's fondest dreams. If you are looking for a game just for shear casual fun, you can't go wrong with Galaxy.

I bought this game for my little cousin for his birthday and then played it with him on a visit. The game is truly worthy of the Mario brand, amazing graphics and great playability. I was actually thinking about buying myself a Wii just to play this game, but I've since reconsidered as I wouldn't get anything done otherwise. :)
Could have been better

This game is really fun the first time you play it but as you go on in the story it becomes boring. It takes forever to beat the game with Mario. After that, you need to beat the game with Luigi. So when I even got to around 50 or 60 stars, I just thought this was boring and there would be no point playing this, so I moved on. The transformations of Mario are fun especially boo mario and bee mario. Before it came out, I wanted it badly, but as you can see, my luck turned. Otherwise, this game is pretty fun, but Nintendo could have done a better job on this.

This is a GREAT game. If you have a Wii, and don't own this game, stop reading right now, and buy it. You will not be disappointed. Don't wait for the price to drop. Buy it now. I won't write a long review, others have done a far better job than I could. It is a fun game and you will play it for a long time. Even when you are not playing, it is entertaining to watch your friends/children/spouse play.
Great, Awesome get it today!

I'm not going into a lenghthy review about this game, you can go onto cnet or gameiformer or gamespot for that...or read eveyone else's incessant droning.
Growing up with Super Mario brothers, I can honestly say this game is nothing short of incredible. I'm not much of a gamer so I don't care whether it's linear, I just want to have fun!
If your Wii is hooked up to a nice plasma/LCD (whose isn't?), the colors come to life and the game takes on a 3D quality. Mario Galaxy is a lot like Mario 64 where you have to go on adventures for stars. But that's where the similarities end as you float like a bee, defy gravity, and fly through the galaxy on a quest to save the Princess.
A must for any Wii owner. Hands down the best game for this console. Great for any age, easy to play for those non-gamers but challenging enough for those who are (according to my spouse). Fun factor rating: 5/5 stars! So, stop reading about it and get yours today!

I was given SMG over the weekend and spent a few hours playing it, and I have to say it's the best game I've played on the Wii so far. I would dare to say it's the best Mario game so far as well. Everything is great, the graphics, the game play and overall feel of the game is amazing. Only thing I'm finding a little bit difficult is trying to figure out where you CAN go and where you CAN'T go. Can I run around the world or will I fall off. Either way it's very addictive.

I'm not incredibly deep into this game yet, but I have finished off a couple of planets and had a good time doing it. What I like most is that it's challenging without being frustrating... yet. I haven't finsihed, so I don't know what's in store for me. I haven't thrown the controller yet, so that's a good thing. This is really what I was hoping for out of a Wii game. I wanted something that was designed to take advantage of the motion sensor, and I'm very happy with the result. The only question I have is where's Luigi?!
Just amazing

I am also playing Call of Duty 4 on my XBOX 360 and having these two totally different games to play together is awesome. This is simply the best game on the Wii and probably one of the best games for any system ever.
