so much unmet potential

You know that saying "the whole is greater than the some of its parts"? Well, I feel the oposite is true with this game. It certainly looks very good. It has a very good turn-based fighting system that is easy to use. Stat building and leveling up is handled well. The problem is that these individual elements do not add up to an enjoyable game. It feels rather empty, and due to many bugs (several of which crash the game), I found myself eager to "get it over with" so I could play something else.

It lacks any meaningful plot and is basically a series of somewhat redundant battles. I got the feeling it was a great starting point for a really good game, but it never really went anywhere. On to KotOR!

a disappointment - but still fun to play

Atari really blew this one. Their interface is nothing but trouble - HIGHLY disappointing.

BUT...

This game rocks! The story line is fun, the villains are pretty hard, the end battles are great, and the epilogue is varied (depending on what you do). I really wish EA had done this game. It is good for a bout a week or two (assuming that you don't stop to sleep). More than worth the price.

If you like this - try the Icewind Dale games (you can get the entire set of 3 games in a Boxed set for less than $20 - maybe even ten)

I was hooked because - yes, when I was 16 I played the DnD version - which was one hundred times more scary - and about ten times more fun.

Horrible

the mapppin system is atrocious the whole game is horrible. Absolutely do not buy this game, i love roleplaying games and this was painfull just to even attempt to play. The best part is creating ur party at the beginning, however when ya get into the game to actually play its not even worth it. DOn't waste ur time or your money

Despite the bugs(and there are many) this is a great game. I have only played PC games based on D&D never the pen and paper, but I can tell that it is thorough in the rules. The only problem I have is some slight miscalulations and the damage total bonus is not displayed in the character sheet. I would like to see my Two-handed sword specialist in all his glory.(1-12 +7) or + 9 with an Orc starting potential.
The adhearance to the rules is one thing, but the game sort of lacks in character depth with NPC's and the flair that series like Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights had. Voice acting is dull and so is most of the music, but if you want to stay true to D&D tradition this is the only single-player game that can deliver.(or play with your psycotic D&D buddies and get in a bad mood).
Iron man is what makes this game apealing more than the max level cap(level 10) or the flair.
This is not Baldur's Gate. If you do something bad(and your good) you have to live with the mistake(in Iron man) A paladin who mis-speaks or is rude can miss an opertunity to raise his alignment(unlike BG or IWD.) It won't hurt you to tell the someone to go lay an egg, but it certainly won't help. If you multi-class you will be very weak. 4 levels of fighter and six of paladin will not win the game and it isn't very exiting either not being able to use maximum turn undead or smite 3x per day. With five character slots a pure mono class group is best for this low level cap. Pick up a good brawler on the way.(he's stupid too and will make for interesting dialog.)
Fighting is nicely done from the animation of attacks to the scale of the size of wheapons in relation to the people who wield them. A 6'2" paladin is dwarfed by the size of his bastard sword(4'10") and tower shield(chin to toe of a 5'5 knight of real life middle ages.). It looks incredible to see the bastard sword wielded as a one-handed wheapon. The spells are beautiful and graceful. A sorcerer has fewer spells but she can cast much more often and with metamagic feats and spell maximum feats she is as leathle(or more so) than a mage. The voice talents of your characters are a bit non-threatening though and thier is no battle cry as in BG, IWD, or Neverwinter Nights. It is somewhat uninspiring to hear your dwarf go "ok" before swinging his Battle axe instead of "I split yer joe!" or something similar. This reminds me of a my supervisor telling me to refill the printer cartrage before noon. "ok". Harmless enough, it is just that.
The game is expensive, but you get a [money amount]rebate at certain stores(I bought it at [local store].) It ends up costing about [money amount]in the end. Once the bugs are worked out like the mage not memorizing spells or the optiions shadow detale reverting back to "1" It will be a five star game.
I rate it four stars, but I find Neverwinter Nights to be more fun as far as "fun factor"

If you like awesome tactical combat......

The combat in this game is so deep you will need scuba gear. The game has wonderful graphics and the spell effects are grade A. Yes there are quite a few bugs, but a patch is coming later in October so I wouldn't worry about it. I have a 1GHz Athlon and with a 64 mb video card (Windows Me) and it runs decent, some slow up with lots of monsters on screen at one time. If you ever played the PnP version then it is a must buy! In summary, short on story but exceptional combat. (The adventure this game is based on was a hack'n'slash event, thus the computer version is also hack'n'slash).

Great Module poorly done

I loved this module when it came out. I saw this and I was thrilled. Finally, they had done what I wanted done for so long. I bought it and installed it. Started off very fun. Then I played longer. I can not get any of my quest outside of Hommlet to update. I have been in contact with Atari and tried their suggestions and they don't work. This game is just not worth the money. I had to stop playing because not being able to complete the quests makes the game difficult and not very fun. Hopefully they will try to correct all the problems they have.

Excellent 3.5 implementation for reald D&D fans

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 3

I have no clue why people say this game is not good. if you are a D&D fan, and want as close as possible implementation of 3.5 rules this is the game for you. Its got everything, and really feels like the old 'gold box' games when in combat, as you cycle trhough you party and select from trhe many options. It is not a showy Balders Gate/NWN deal, but it requires intelligence and thought to win an encounter, and with an almost complete skill/feat implementation, there are many ways to approach the adventure.
If you were looking for something to follow your fun with Diablo or Dungeon Siege, look elsewhere, it is not that type of game. In terms of bugs, I have never had any running this game. Now that you can pick this up for 5 bucks in some places, you have no reason NOT to, if you are a D&D fan!
