If Ever a Game Screamed for a Giant Can of RAID...!!!

Never have I played such a buggy game! I experienced corrupt saved games, both hard saves and quick saves, CTD's, constant slow-downs, freeze-ups, clipping and black screens. I had to completely remove and re-install this game 5 different times because of these many problems. I had all the latest drivers for my hardware so that wasn't an issue, it simply refused to run whenever it felt like it.

Both Troika and Circle of Eight have contributed patches, (I'm still waiting on the second promised patch from Troika since December '03 which has yet to appear). Both patches addressed some problems but there have been so many with the weapon/armor/wand creating abilities and others I found playing the game more tedious then challenging.

The story is an RPGC based on a Greyhawk D&D adventure so the setting, (only two towns and a dungeon), are consistent with the story but Atari forced Troika to disable some of the quests due to what Atari felt was "inapropriate content" making a short game even shorter.

The combat system has been praised for keeping as true to the new D&D 3.5 rule set as any game has come to date. It is turn-based combat. I give the game the extra star because of this combat system which has given the game more replayability then it would otherwise have had due to the many problems I've experienced. It was fun, (for a while), to see if I could build the ultimate fighting team, utilizing all their best skills at the most appropriate times. But this got old after a while and I simply abandoned the game and deleted it from my harddrive for the last time due to lack of support by Atari and Troika.

I don't recommend this game for its many unresolved game mechanic issues but in fairness, because it sticks so close to the D&D 3.5 rules, some hardcore D&D fans manage to overlook the bugs and find their own ways to enjoy the game despite them. Proceed at your own risk.

Great Ideas

This game has excellent potential. It executes the 3.5 rules nicely, and watching them in visual action provided me with a new respect for the ruleset. Like Icewind Dale 2, you don't have the ability to roam freely and adventure, which is okay, since it is about the temple. Unfortunately, the bugs, even with the patch, are just a little too much. I imagine that it helps if you have a powerful computer system, but from what I've read, it doesn't help much.
If you can pick this game up on the cheap, say $10-12, go for it, as long as you can also download the official and unofficial patches. I hope the Atari and Troika make a sequel or expansion with the kinks worked out. A realatively bug-free version would become my second favorite CRPG, if for no other reason than the rules execution.

Could be great !?!

The game is the truest adaption of pen and paper D&D I've ever seen, and I've played just about all of them. The use of turn based gameplay does not slow the game down at all and adds a whole new level of strategizing to the D&D computer game genre. All that being said, the game is buggy. There are enough problems to seriously detract from gameplay and the documentation leaves a lot to be desired. Many aspects of the interface are not obvious (eg metamagic use). My sincere advice is to wait until a patch or two has been released and then buy this product. Once the bugs have been squashed TOEE will be one of the best D&D PC games ever.

So Far, It Looks Great !!!

My son recommended this game to me after I got my new computer (HP-dv9000 series laptop); he has been running it just fine on his Alienware machine.

I did notice that some of the music sounded a little strange, but after playing with the configuration for 10 or 15 minutes I got that problem solved. So, so far, the game looks fantastic, and it looks like my kind of game (I'm a big fan of NWN 1 and 2 and all their expansions). As an aside, I also like strategy games such as Galctic Civilizations II and Civilization IV.

I'll play around with this game for a week or so and then add an update to this review after I've had a chance to see how well it "holds up" on my computer. But, honestly, I don't anticipate any problems.

Update: After several days of trying to get ToEE to run on my new computer (which is running Vista) I finally gave up. However, I do have another computer which runs Windows XP so I installed the game there. I'm happy to say that it runs fine on that machine, and I'm enjoying the first chapters of this excellent RPG.

One caveat to the "style" of the game -- this is a serious attempt to recreate a Dungeons and Dragons experience using the computer as DM. Those that haven't played D&D (with the books and the many and varied dice) might not appreciate some of the subtleties of this effort by Atari. Not that playing D&D is an absolute must for enjoying this game; it stands on its own pretty well. But, for those of us who have indeed spent many long nights throwing 20-sided dice, this game will definitely bring back memories. And, the graphics (while not state-of-the-art) are eye-catching, the plot is fun, and some of the conversation is a hoot. Where else can you find so many hours of enjoyment for such a small price?

Best Wishes for a Peace Profound,

Worth a look

I just played through the demo that I downloaded from Atari's site. It was a lot of fun, if a bit challenging at first.

I've been so conditioned recently by other AD&D games into expecting to be able to rest/heal/regain spells at will, that not being able to do it in this game took a bit of getting used to. However, once I found a safe area to use like a "base of operations", things really took off for my party.

Also, for me, the turn-based system is a welcome change from the "real time" trend and feels much more like the pen and paper game. It also reminds me of the great gameplay from "party-building" classics like Wizzardry I-III and the SSI games like the *original* Pool of Radience or Neverwinter Nights.

In my opinion, this type of design is closer to what playing AD&D is supposed to feel like.

On the downside, some aspects of the user interface could be better, but nothing too bothersome. I didn't encounter much in the ways of bugs in the (limited) demo, but I understand that Atari has released a MAJOR patch that fixes something like 300+ issues for the full game. Now that the patch is available, I intend to buy the full game.

Disappointed D&D fan

Man, this game is loaded with so many bugs that I cant recommend it to anyone. While the graphics are beautiful, the constant crashes and game lock ups just make it unplayable. I am glad I didn't pay for this ourtta my own pocket, I'd be really PO'ed if I had. And my PC is the latest from Alienware, with 2Gig of Ram and a 256MB video card, so you'd think this game would run smooth, but nope. Spend your money elsewhere, wait a few months and hope they get the bugs worked out. Oh, the latest patch for this game still hasn't addressed all of the bugs, just additional fyi.

Fun, but a little chalenging

Are you people on drugs? i have been playing this game for a while and i have encountered no noticeable bugs. did you ever stop and think that maybe your computer is a little bit challenged by this game. for gods sake it takes a gig minnimum to install. the game is emmensly adictive, even if a bit frustrating to start. and no, it was not because of bugs. it was because when you first start your party is almost always outclassed by whatever you are fighting. true there are some simple enemies like the giant toads and bandits in the moathouse. but what about the zombies. i kept lossing my scorceror and rouge. once you get your party decently biult up it levels out to a very fun challenging game, with NO GAME CRASHING BUGS!!! maybe my computer is just really lucky but i think you all need a beter video card or something

Doesn't Work

I am puzzled by the high reviews this game gets when it doesn't even work. They put a lot of effort into the gay marriage part. It would have been nice if they had that same enthusiasm with the rest of the product. I have not bought another Atari product since.

Excelent game

You will have to be very care with this games requirement. I have a system that meant and double all the requirements. But when I get to the temple port part it would crash. I wrote Atari support and sent my system info, then they wrote back telling me I need a video listed on their recommand requirements. So this game is a lost for me because I am not going the buy a video when I have a top 256mb video that doesn't work with their game. The a joke!!!
