Too buggy to bother with

This game reminds me why I switched to console gaming. I troubleshoot computer problems all day. The last thing I want to do when I get home from work is to troubleshoot a game.
I played the game without patching it and it worked fine except that I couldn't even get through the tutorial because the magic user's menu didn't provide the option to cast an offensive spell.
I applied patch 2 (which is 1 and 2 combined) so far so good. When I applied patch 3, the game would no longer start. It would kick me back to my desktop every time.
I've spent about an hour poking around forums, but you know what? Shove this game. They should be PAYING me to do this much work. Thank God I only paid $5 for it at the 5 Below store.
Thanks "Atari" for turning a title with a fine lineage into 1 more pound of weight that my garbage men will need to cart off come Monday morning.

Can you say Better Business Bureau?

This game has soooo many bugs and flaws that all companies involved with its release should be reported to the Better Business Bureau! It's not ethical to release a product that never went through testing. There is no way this product went through testing. Distributors should fine the developing companies for all the costs they've incurred handling returns!! I went against my normal practice of checking "Amazon customer reviews" because I saw Atari on the store shelf. Well, I've learned my lesson the hard way. I will never buy another game without checking the on-line reviews. Avoid this product at all costs. Play the ToEE Mod available through Neverwinter Nights instead.

Just like DnD only buggy ;)

First off this is definately as close to pen-and-paper DnD as has been done. The changes are explained and in my opinion are minor. The combat is helping me, as a DM, to better understand the tactics used in 3.5 (since I write all the story I don't have time to playtest fights or what not).
Second, it's got some bugs. Every game I've ever played does and this is no exception. When they get these worked out I'd give it a 6, because...
The replay value is tremendous! Each alignment has subtle differences and Good vs. Evil are very diff, as one works to destroy temple and the other works to save it. All quests require cleaning the moathouse, so don't let that similarity discourage you, they (G vs E) are very different. And evil has at least two paths that are different.
All-in-all I think Troika did great and that this will be a stepping stone to an even greater work from them.

Most irritating game I've ever attempted to finish

It is difficult to decribe how much I looked forward to this game. Being a hard-core pnp player and DM for over 25 years who only recently discovered computer gaming, I hoped it would be a huge success, since I believed the rumors that if it was, sequels would certainly be produced. You can hardly understand how joyfully I loaded the game up, dreaming of the fun to follow...

And the game wouldn't start. I downloaded the patch and installed it. I had more issues. I downloaded the fan-produced patch and installed it. I was greeted by a dull and unedited game which many other ex-players have likened to a first-draft beta version of what the game should have been. Lags, lock-ups, freezes, etc, etc, followed me throughout the game. The dialogue is inane and spelling errors appear on the screen in the boxes (hard to believe, but true). I checked community boards and found my problems were unusual in the apparent sense that I had so FEW of them, compared to many players. And, troublingly, Atari has done little to support this product, to communicate with their fans on their own community boards, let alone fix it the myriad of bugs in the game.

Not only is the game buggy beyond my worst nightmare, but many rules are implemented incorrectly or not at all. When a game is so bug-ridden that it's most hard-core fans (yes, there are a few) are forced to proclaim it's adherence to the "rules" as it's strongest point, the fact it isn't as close to the official ruleset as it should be begins to irritate. Yes, combat is a strong point, but I'm sure anyone playing the game really spends less than one-quarter of their time fighting, and most of their time re-tracing endless maps trudging to the next fight.

Nevertheless, I wanted to finish the game. Occassionally I found it actually compelling, and that, coupled with my innate stubborness, kept me at it (or am I just a glutton for punishment?). Now I can't play any longer. A few hours from what I know is the end of the game, I've found myself out of six hours of my life, replaying the game over and over again because of desktop crashes. I am, six hours later, exactly where I was six hours ago. Those were six hours I could have spent, well, doing ANYTHING else.

Thanks, Atari.

Not a bad game - worth a playing through

This game definitely was worth if for the price. Though unlike the Diablo series, replayability is minimal since the quests, dungeons and areas are all the same the second time through. But from an old school, turn based combat, D&D game, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has it's bugs, the most annoying of which is NPCs taking their share of the treasure first and encumbering themselves permanently with junk they won't ever sell or drop. But over all the graphics were good, the gameplay fun and the user interface easy to use and much improved over the Pool of Radiance.

The Game NWN Should have been

The rightful heir to the throne the Baldur's Gate series once held is almost here!! When are developers(and publishers) going to realize---it's the gameplay, stupid! That's the reason that NWN and its expansion packs are headed directly to the bargain bin. That's why BG2, a game that was completely 2D while everything else was 3D was one of the best reviewed and best selling games ever. That is why This Game is going to do well, and deserves to do well. These guys know their gaming fans. They want rewarding gameplay, multiple detailed storylines, gorgeous graphics(even if they are mostly 2D), and a game that feels like its filled to the brim with character. Not bland environments that bore the gamer to sleep.

If you ever played Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, or any other roleplaying game, and just wished it had more depth--then Temple is the right game for you. Please, buy this game! Don't let the mindless clones like UT take over the gaming market! Buy this quality product and make a statement you want substance over nice packaging and snazzy-sounding features on the back. It's what's inside the box that still counts, right?

Hold out for the patch!!

I was anxiously awaiting the release of this game! It has so much potential! Excellent grpahics, and an interesting new take on the DnD game system set in the original Greyhawk campaign. It's too bad Atari & Troika rushed to get the game to market - the game quality is severely lacking!

Items do not have full descriptions.
The scrolling speed is woefully slow.
Many of the item creation and skills/feats do not work as described.

Do yourself a favor because I believe the game is worth playing - Wait for the patch!

Awesome Game

This game is by far the best D&D simulation of all time. I truly loved the old gold box games - for their time they were brilliant an a lot of fun - but this game is really as close to the real thing as I hoped. I also enjoyed the Baldur's Gate games and Neverwinter Nights, though I found Torment to be a lot less like D&D and more like its own game. ToEE is, without a doubt, the best of the bunch.

I always dislike the limited number of conversation options available for computer "RPGs", but that's my main gripe. The combat system is organized and easy to manipulate. It's all turn based - just like the real thing. There's no lame click-click-click combat which requires no strategy or thinking. This is NOT your mindless Diablo-type game. The AI is remarkable in that certain monsters will focus totally on the spellcasters and try to kill them, while other, dumber monsters just go for whoever is closest.

I remember playing the original ToEE and a few of the encounters and running into the characters from the module was a real kick. I didn't remember enough to spoil the game though and there are enough differences so that everything is new and fresh.

As far as bugs go, I have encountered some, like monsters in walls and one crash to desktop, but nothing major. An up-to-date computer is recommended, as one of my friends with an older system has had more issues than I have. I agree that Atari/Troika should have refined the game and cleared up the problems prior to release, but even with the bugs it's the best game I have played in years.

Now... How about making the sequel for levels 10 and up using the Against the Giants series? I'm in!

More bugs than a termite's nest

This is such a cool concept that I couldn't wait to play. Sadly, it's completely riddled with bugs. My favorite is when fighting types are penalized for using a weapon they are proficient with. My fighter (8th level, 18 strength, weap focus longsword) has a +8 bonus when it should be +13. Oh and a dwarf I made got the same penalty for using a dwarven waraxe. Come on guys.

No Crashes... No gameplay either!!

I have to agree with the previous review. After the Balder's Gate series (1+2+Throne of Bhaal) and the IceWind Dale set, this game is a disappointment. I have not experienced any crashes on Windows ME, but the bugs are just too frustrating. The scrolling of the screen is too slow. The comments made by the previous reviewer are spot on with regards to graphics, combat and character generation. I only gave 2 stars because the bugs prevent me from seeing more of the game. Anybody reading this should hold out for the patch first. The crashes must be due to Windows XP(extra problems!), but the bugs are very unprofessional for a first release. Come on guys, you cannot even complete first level quests due to bugs... how much beta testing does it take to discover that? Shame on you Atari. I remember TOE from D&D all those years ago, hence the interest. What a shame. Tis a few steps backwards from BG1+2, IWD1+2 and NWN.
