I enjoyed The Getaway to a great extent. It has a twisted deep storyline, realistic graphics, and superb voice acting. You play two characters Mark Hammond, and a cop (Who's name I forgot). Hammond's story revolves around him doing favors for the Mafia boss Charlie Jolson to get his son back. Where as the cop's story intertwines with that of Hammonds. London has been recreated in this game...exactly...down to every storefront. So I assume, if your familiar with London, then you have an advantage. Be forewarned though, this game wanted to get accross that you are playing a movie. That means, there are no ammo counts, no health bars, no health pickups, or maps. To get around London, you must follow your turn signals on your car. And if your turn lights are busted up then you need to jack a new car. You can tell how much health you have by how much Hammond limps (or bleeds. Perhaps The Getaway's biggest downfall is the gameplay. I got very tired of watching the characters slow sluggish movement (and when he limps he moves an inch a minute). To heal your self you must lean up against a wall and wait...and wait...until the bloody or limp disappears. The targeting system is also a point of concern. It thinks that some chump a mile off is more dangerous than some guy with a shotgun right next to me. The cutscenes in this movie, while very long, are very entertaining and lifelike. The charters in these scenese are so believable I swear I could point them out in real life. Overall I throughly enjoyed this game. Oh yeah and one other thing, this game has an "M" rating for a reason. The F word is used constantly. The violence isnt' all that bad but none of it was really offending to me. Well The Getway was a ride and I enjoyed it. Again, it was very impressive.

Awesome game!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very cool game. A little unrealistic how the F-word is used every other sentence by every citizen in London. The next time I go to London and hear the F-word everywhere I will let you know but until then, it is not realistic. Othr than that though, awesome game. I noticed one person here didn't like it because English peope drive the wrong side of the street. That is a stupid remark. It would be unrealistic to have them drive like Americans because it is London, not New York. Obviously, he needs to travel more.

THIS IS SIMPLY COOL

AIGHT WHEN I FIRST PLAYED THE GETAWAY I HAD MY DOUBTS. U CANT SKIP THROUGH THE CUT-SCENES. BUT AS YOU PLAY INTO THE GAME YOU END UP HAVING ALOT OF FUN PLAYING IT. THEY HAVE A GUY NAMED EYEBROWS WHO DOES NOTHING BUT YELLS THE F-WORD CONSTANTLY. ITS HILARIOUS. YOU ARE ASSIGNED CREATIVE MISSIONS THAT INVOLVE STEALTH, AND JUST SIMPLY SHOOTING UP ALOT OF BRITS. A HUGE MAP OF LONDON THAT IS UNBEATABLE ANYWHERE. IN CONCLUSION THERE ARE VERY LITTLE ERRORS. GET THIS GAME.

Sick of Vice City? The Getaway's fun!

Alright, alright. Vice City does have more. More "Get outta here!" laughs, chases, explosions, violence, and length. But I've already played that game into the ground. And The Getaway does have similiaries, but is a different type of game. It does indeed have an awesome story line with great cutscenes. So I picked up The Getaway...and all I can say is that it was a $ well spent!

The game looks much more realistic than GTA4. GTA4 is cartoony, but, then again that adds to the fun. Getaway looks so real it's scary--the violence and language is not for minors. The cars are awesome...and, GTA4 fans, real life cars. They also handle that way, and I like it!

I also think that the SOHO team did an awesome job with indoor/outdoor fighting. Think Metal Gear Solid meets Snatch--just awesome! The ducking and covering and rolling make for much more fun street brawls than in GTA4 (but who can resist blowing eveything up with a rocket launcher in GTA4, huh?)

There are some flaws and bugs, especially with the controller at times, but the game is still unbelievable. I also wish there were weather effects other than darkening than the clouds. Let's see that London Fog!

It boils down to this: Vice City and Getaway are two different games with two different atmospheres (80's Miami and 2000's London...how different can you get?) than both involve driving. Both are fun, and look great. Both let you go on rampages and do as you please. So, if you've played either into the ground, get the other. Or both!

Good Movie. So-so game

First let me say that this game has an amazing story. You feel as if your an actual gangster. While Vice City was more of a cartooney comedy, The Getaway is a hardcore ... game that has torture scenes and language that would put Pulp Fiction to shame. With that said the game itself is mediocre at best. First you have no map in the game. The only way you can tell where to go is a small little turn signal on your car. Very frustrating. Second the gun play is bad. When your targeting something many times it will focus on the guy 100 feet from you who has his backturned instead of the guy next to you with a gun in your face. There is no health in the game. The only way you can tell how much life you have is a bloodspot on your back that gets bigger when your closer to death. Also to heal yourself you have to stop and rest untill the blood goes away. Extremely frustrating. Also this game is hard! And most of the levels require you to play them over and over again untill you have everything completely memorized. It requires little skill but a good memory. Overall the game is a really good movie but it's lacking in the most important area, the gameplay.

Could be so much better

This game has so much potential; there are many great things to say. Good stuff first: Graphics, audio, city map (most of central London!), story, dark humor, suspense, lots of cars and weapons. It could be awesome! But the game is badly spoiled by a few things, I'll illustrate the key stinkers: 1. Driving Navigation - There is no map and the blinking turn signals on the car frequently point you the wrong way up one-way streets. 2. Camera - It's usually in the right place, but gets confused when in a heated gun battle or enclosed spaces. 3. Auto Aim - It doesn't aim towards what is most threatening, which can get you killed (the manual aim is next to useless). 4. Lack of Overlays (for maps, health, status etc.) - I know this (or lack of) is supposed to enhance the game's realism. It doesn't, it's still a game, and a less playable game because of this. For instance, lack of information means you don't know where you are in London, you don't know exactly how much energy or ammo you have, it's not obvious where you're supposed to go or what to do. You spend a lot of time aimlessly driving around, running out of time and restarting the missions. What makes no sense is that the game frequently breaks its own rules of "realism". For example, if your character is all shot up and about to lose his life, you need only lean against a wall and he becomes fully healed (and his blood-stained clothes magically clean themselves too!). Is that realistic? Nope. Do these things detract from the game? Yes. 6. Cut scenes - They look great, are well scripted and the acting is excellent. But they can't be skipped, even after you've watched them already! It's very frustrating to be forced to watch the same cut scene again and again. 7. Controls - They're a bit unresponsive and the button layout isn't the best, though you'll probably get used to it after a few hours. Summary: The Getaway is equal parts awesome and annoyance. I recommend it, but only if you're a patient game player (I'm not). What's disappointing is that the few significant flaws are mostly an intentional part of the game design. Personally, I hope Sony fix the problems and re-release the game as a special edition or something.

The BEST game ever released!!!

Up until recently Vice city was the most immersive, innovative, and impressive game that I have ever played...and being a devoted gamer in my late 20's, I can safely say that I have played alot of games.
Most games, even the greatest ones like Vice City dont keep my attention long enough to beat them. I just beat The Getaway last night and I can safely say that this is without a doubt the all around best game ever created by man or God!!!
It's like Vice City (you cannot avoid the comparisons) but for a mature audience. It's gritty, extremely realistic, and if you couldnt do it in real life, you cant in the game. There are no cheesy one ups around the corner, you can only carry up to 2 weapons a one time, and you cannot perforn superhuman feats, there are no life meters, ammo meters, ect (so yes, you can play it on your high definition big screen tv)!
The graphics are superb and rival anything I have seen to date, especially for the game being so huge, it is modelled beautifully after London, and from what I hear it is so accurate that people who live there can actually jump in a vehicle, and drive to their home or work!!! Hows that for realism???
I dont care what people say, this game is almost as "open ended" as VIce CIty, the difference is you have mostly linear missions, but you can opt to leave them to explore the city if you want to, at least in most of the missions, and once you complete the game, you can go into free mode to explore at your leisure.
This is the most aduly oriented game I have ever played, especially for a console, and this is the direction that more developers need to be looking, especially with the average age of the Playstation 2 owner being 26.
If you have any reservations about buying it, do as I did and rent it first. There are so many things you can do in this game I cannot even begin to descrive them all, you have the realistic graphics of Mafia (PC) combines with an excellent story (the best I have even saw in a game) with Vice City like actions: IE stealing cars and running over pedestrians, and MGS like strategy (flatteing out on a wall, peeking around the corner, waiting for someone to come by, take them hostage and silently break their neck)!
Have fun!!!

Decent Game bu Wondering About the Soundtrack

This Game had many flaws but is still decent. The targeting system was aweful. You target people 50 yards away instead of someone right in front of you shooting you to death. What I'm really wondering about though is the Jamaican Rap song playing when you are the cop and you have to raid the drug house with all the marijuana plants. Anybody know?

THE BEST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED

This is clearly the best game i have ever played, in my entire life.

After the getaway, i tried hitman 2 and gta vice city etc (they all fall terribly short from the getaway).

When you play the getaway, you think you are in the game... there are no stupid colorful buttons, writing or flashing things showing how many lives you have left etc on the screen (they have smarter more subtle ways of communicating this information within the game).

You become apart of it. Played it over and over again.

I can't wait for the second version (and they better make more).

Good game

I say good game not great, because some of the details aren't great but you can't do free roam mode until you beat the game! But on some missions I will just go and play around 'cause I might just get bored. So I think this is a good game with a good story plot. I personally think its worth the money so thats why I think it deserves 4 stars!!!!
