Note - I have not played the game through, this is merely a first impression I've gained from sitting with it for a couple nights now.
The verdict? Spider-man 2 for PS2 is going to be a milestone in video gaming. On the surface, it's another Grand Theft Auto ripoff, albeit the best copycat yet. But when you really look at what has been achieved...Manhattan was modelled for the city. Man-freaking-hattan. An actual existing city was created in a virtual context, complete with to-scale Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Times Square...even ground zero at the WTC. I can't think of any similar achievement in gaming, where a living, breathing city was transferred into digital space. Granted, I'm sure it's not entirely accurate, and it's not anywhere near as grimey as the real thing, but it still feels like New York.
It's also NAILED the super-hero thing. Comic book games up to this point were usually just monotonous exploitations of franchises - run through some warehouse, battle a hundred idiot thugs, fight the boss guy, go onto a new level. They never captured the feel of comics, the patroling around the city, helping the average Joes and stopping petty crimes and robberies. This has raised the bar way high for any subsequent Marvel or DC based games.
While getting comfortable with the many controls and combos comes with a steep learning curve, nothing feels cooler than swinging to and from destinations. I can honestly say I took 20 minute breaks here and there from completing missions just to swing around the city. It's that fun. Spider-man is, without a doubt, the most difficult comic character to emulate in a video game, as his acrobatics are so different than any movement people are familiar with. But, they pulled it off. I'm going to have lots of fun with this one.
Amazing First Impression...

...but then it gets dull quickly. This is the best way to describe the new adventure, Spider-Man 2. After first playing the game, you realize just how big the environment is, how many interiors you can go into, and just how FUN swinging around the Big Apple is. The game goes downhill from there.
The graphics are pretty good. The city looks fantastic, the interiors are great, and Spider-Man is well modeled. But, when looking at every other character model, you want to cringe and cover your eyes. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst should sue this game. Tobey looks like a goofy nerd straight from The Simpsons, and Kirsten looks like she would be right at home with Charlie Brown. Don't get me started on the pedestrions. Their lips don't even move. Also, they will say to Spider-Man that a police chase or someone is falling THAT WAY, but they don't point anywhere. Is that wierd?
Now I will start on the so-called music. The Spider-Man theme is pathetic, and some unknown but ungodly terrible band called The Distillers provide the rest of the music. It sounds like Mario games with electronic punk rock. Not too good. Also the voice acting is lazy. Alfred Modina is funny, not menacing, and Tobey maguire must have had a microphone stuck to him while he was still in bed at four in the morning, because he sounds asleep. Also, Mary jane from the game does not sound like Mary Jane from the movie. And the little kid who loses his balloon? You might want to put your fist in his face after hearing him cry a few hundred times.
The gameplay is great. Swinging is easy, and every other spider-man move is easy to execute. There are just too many combos to rember, and they are complex to pull off, so that bothers me. Also, it can be hard to go where you want to.
The story mode will take a good chunk of time to complete, and after that, you can explore the city for awhile. Warning: This game WILL GET DULL after playing it for twenty or so hours. I'm a bit bored, and I have had the game for two days. it would have helped if there were more missions, and more street crimes to solve. There are around eight simple problems that you can solve in your spare time, and I don't think that the same eight crime happen in New York City every day.
I was ecstatic that this game took place in New York, because it is my favorite city in the world. I was excited to see Times Square, The Empire State Building, and The Statue of Liberty. Aside from that, swinging is very exciting, and going on top of the skyscrapers is too. Spider-Man 2 is a game that you will have a tought time deciding to rent or buy. Bottom Line: If you LOVE Spider-Man and/or New York City, you should buy this game. Any other gamers, this game merits a wonderful rental.
Along came a digital spider...

There are rare occasions where a game closely follows the film and expands. With 'Enter the Matrix' we went behind the films which was cool, but nevertheless, there were scenes and characters we died to try. In the original 'Spider-man' game, we were close as well, with missions much like the film, but they almost went astray...they also teased you. Opening up an entire city for you, just to wander in certain areas... Why? Why? Why?
The answer is, 'Spider-man 2.'
This game is easily one of the better games to have come out this year, the past few years, for a film, and for awhile. I love it. You can go anywhere, do anything, and still feel like it's a Spider-man game. Honestly, I'm disappointed in the reviews here on Amazon.com because frankly, this game is exceptional.
The graphics aren't top notch, but they're still amazing. I mean, the transitions for day and night are flawless and the building outlines are a modern comic...it's nice. The physics and movement so hit the nail on the head, you just become so addicted. The ads say, 'TAKE NEW YORK FOR A SPIN.' Let's just say I wouldn't sue them for false advertising. New York is easily seen and the graphics are prime to bring this to life. I must admit some characters could have been better, but the CGI cut scenes are some of the best work, to date.
Controls. You feel them very fast. A reent review compared the swinging system for beginners, to the way Peter Parker first learned his moves...they're not far off. You start off and you really are amazed at what you can do and how you can pull it off. The swinging system is so profound, original, and realistic...it's almost worth the game. The physics system really propels you as well, making you go faster, climbs walls with ease, and even run up them! Needless to say, there's nothing to complain about here, and if you do...try Easy Swinging.
Story and Characters are all there. I hate Mysterio, always have. The levels he's in are indeed lame and annoying, but once past they're fine. The levels with Shocker and Black Cat are so much fun and you really capture the spirit and free will of Spiderman. Not to mention, Black Cat is very well acted with a great story and dialogue written in that fits well with the film's story. MJ is fine, although a bit under the weather as far as graphics at times. Doc Ock is a blast, although there should have been more levels and a bit more challenging if you ask me. Either way, everything is great and the storyline is woven perfectly.
The game takes you anywhere, from Greenwich to Gramercy, they even have a WTC memorial at night in the Financial District. Along with notable places like NY Public Library or Statue of Liberty, there are film locales too such as Oscorp, Osborne Mansion, Parker's apartment, MJ's, etc. Even the campus! From delivering pizzas to making MJ's play, you really do feel the stressful life of Spider-man as random crimes or people call to your help. The game is overwhelming and I found this far more interesting than the repetitive Grand Theft Auto series, only because, when in GTA can you swing to high buildings or traverse NYC on a train or car?
Either way, this is a great game and will leave you challenged and having fun for hours, days, and nights. I recommend it, not only to Spider-man fans, but to anyone that wants a good game.

It's so much fun to simply spin webs and fly around New York City in Spider-Man 2 that you may never bother to finish the game. It trumps its impressive predecessor with one word: Freedom! Not that any of Activision's earlier Spidey games have been slouches, but in Spider-Man 2, you really will feel the thrill (and hectic pace) of being Peter Parker. The plot traces that of the film and its villain, Dr. Octopus, but the game expands to include appearances by Mysterio, Black Cat, Rhino, and other Marvel folks. Developer Treyarch has built a half-scale model of New York City with no loading times and no boundaries. Want to swing from Harlem to Ellis Island? Would you prefer to run through the streets on foot? Or maybe hitch a ride atop one of the hundreds of moving cars? With tons of mini-missions and goals strewn about the city, and various icons to collect, Manhattan is yours to explore-anywhere, any time, all the time. Doing so becomes a joy thanks to the locomotion system. Web-swinging takes a little practice, but in short order, you'll feel massively powerful, shooting webs that visibly auto-attach to buildings and trees, zooming around corners, pulling 360-degree loops, even grabbing onto a helicopter and getting an aerial tour of the city. The city looks great; the pedestrian models could be higher res, but it's a sweet Big Apple with cool day/night effects and detailed textures on both machines (though the Xbox version looks noticeably prettier from a distance). Spidey seems a little small on the screen, but that facilitates a better view of the terrain during swings. The street missions do get repetitive -- stop an armored-car robbery, get ambushed by some thugs, chase down a carjacker, um...deliver some pizza, save a child's balloon (!?), then stop another armored-car robbery with the same script as the first one -- but the combat is never the same twice. There are so many ways to take down the bad guys, in terms of combos, unlockable special attacks, and aerial juggles, that the framework for the conflict doesn't really have to be stunningly original; it's the actual beatdowns that contain all the flavor. And they're quite tasty. It's a strangely silent game without much music, but you will hear pedestrian chatter as you pass -- everything from "Spidey, you da man!" to "Menace!" They could be less repetitive and cheesy, though. Film actor Tobey Maguire delivers Peter Parker's trademark sarcastic wit smoothly; Kirsten Dunst, Alfred Molina, and Bruce Campbell provide voices as well. It sounds like hype, but it's fact: This is indeed the best Spider-Man game yet made. From the rich combat system to the simple, inexhaustible joys of swinging through the city, Spider-Man 2 delivers the experience web-slinger fans have been begging for since time immortal.

I've read reviews and played this game, but in all honesty, I loved this game. The biggest difference from the first SM game is that you can now touch the street instead of dying when you get within 200 yards of it. Plus, there are vigilante missions. Aside from the main quest, there's other stuff to do. just swinging from building to building is a treat to behold. This time, your webs stick to stuff, instead of grabbing thin air and actually letting you swing from it. Your webs will attach to buildings, flagpoles, HELICOPTERS, and more. Plus, what's with all the criticizem, this is the best SpiderMan game available. The graphics have improved majorly from the first one, at least the cut-scenes...
But overall, a 4 out a five.
Come on guys....

I got to play on the demo for this game last year at the San Deigo Comic Con and it's truly amazing. The swinging is more complicated and takes more time to get used to (and more attention) but once you get the hang of it, is a much more realistic experience. As incredible as the first game was, this is several orders of magnitude better!
Fun...but repetitive and easy

Fun game...but after a while, it's the same thing over and over again...save people hanging on ledges, stop car robberies, and beat up gang members. It's fun...but more of a rental game...you can finish the game in a day.
