Wears Out Its Welcome

Spider-Man 2 is probably a lot better than most superhero movie video games, but overall it's a blast at first that quickly becomes tiresome. Swinging around Manhattan and being able to crawl up the Empire State Building (and jump if you so choose) is fun and battling random crimes, racing around the city, delivering pizzas, and (my favorite) catching runaway balloons for children is amusing...for a little while. Soon it becomes routine.

As for the story, it bears little resemblance to the movie, which is probably just as well. Most of the missions were terribly easy. I only had a little trouble getting the hang of breaking the orbs around the Mysterio statue's head and then I had a lot of problems with the final battle with Doc Ock. That's not because they're too difficult so much as I'm uncoordinated. This game should be extremely easy to beat for those who have good reflexes and can memorize fighting combos.

The graphics are lame. The voicework of Tobey Maguire and Alfred Molina was good, but Kirsten Dunst sounded almost unrecognizable at parts. Bruce Campbell is sometimes funny and sometimes annoying as the "Tour Guide" giving you advice on how to play.

Anyway, at this late date you can probably get the game cheap enough that the 5-6 hours of fun you'll get out of it are worth the price.

The tag-line on the box for this game says "Take New York for a spin." That, and a glowing review from a game-store employee, was enough for me to buy the game. I had a lot of fun with the first game, and decided to give this one a try as well. I must say that I'm very glad I did. The controls for "Spider-Man 2" are much more user-friendly. Swinging, running, even fighting, take only a few minutes to get used to. The complexities of these activities (i.e. wall-sprinting, pole-swinging, attack combos, and the "high-speed" button) take more time but are just as easily accomplished, if not mastered. I still run into things and get hit by thugs, but hey, the game's still fun, too. I gave the game four stars instead of five because of its repetetive nature. Helping citizens in distress gets old after a while. But put the game down for a day and come back to it later . . . the game's replay value is extremely high. Some of the challenges and races are ridiculously hard (heh, that would be why they're rated as "Insane" on the difficulty scale, right?) but the prospect of practicing and getting better seems fun rather than daunting. An earlier reviewer called the controls for the game "intuitive". That is quite accurate, actually. To truly master this game I think it would be necessary to get to the point where you no longer have to think "L2 means sprint . . . hold down X to jump . . ." and instead just push buttons until things happen the way you want them to happen.

I do have to wonder why Mary Jane would just cut Peter off and not have lunch with him if he doesn't arrive at the restaurant IN THE NEXT THIRTY SECONDS. (For those of you who have played the game, you can feel my pain. For those of you who have not . . . don't worry, you will.)

It is fun to be Spider-Man, I must say. Lots of fun. Try it out. You'll enjoy yourself, I promise.

Worst game ever....Read why...

I bought this game for my son and it has been the worst piece of garbage Activision has put out in awhile.

The game frequently freezes and there there at glitches sprinkled all over where you can't move at at all for a few seconds at a time. Furthermore, in some levels the floor goes missing??? It's like you are standing a black square with nothing there. (...)

"But despite lofty ambitions, the title of the first chapter in the new game, "What Might Have Been," pretty much sums up the new installment.

First things first: A test of the game, which is available in versions for PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox, revealed a massive glitch that can prevent it from progressing. Under certain undefined circumstances, the game refused to progress past chapter nine. Activision's suggested fixes include restarting the console and loading from an earlier saved game. If these don't work, or if you don't have an earlier saved game, you may be forced to start over.

A problem of this magnitude in a console game is generally enough reason to avoid it. But even if you wait until a fixed version makes it to the shelves, or you just get lucky and don't hit the glitch, you're going to find a game that feels hurried and incomplete."

It's ironic that Activision knowingly released a game that was this buggy. I'd advise those who are thinking about buying this game for their kids to think again. How do you explain to your son why 1) it freezes 2) glitches 3) there's no floor...?

There are many flaws with this game. The voice acting is cheesy and nobody moves their mouths. The combat is very hard to use because when you try to execute a combo, someone shoots you and messes you up. The graphics are sub-standard.
It is pretty realistic in that you actually have to be under something to use your web. That's pretty much it.

SPIDER MAN 2

Have you ever swung 100's of feet above the ground on a thin rope like piece of web? Or have you climb straight up the face of a building with no safety equipment? Let me guess "no right" well now you can with Spider man 2 the game. The spider is back in his second action packed game.

This was my kind of game action packed and non stop. You can go anywhere and do anything. You have to lead two lives one as spider man one as Peter Parker. (Which might I say isn't so easy). As you probably know you have a job as Peter Parker (The daily bugle). Which will give you something to do when you don't feel like being Spider Man.

I also love the story line. Everything you see in the movie you have to do in the game plus more. I would give it a five star and two thumbs up.
So unless you are out at your job or your secretly a super hero. Try this new game you'll love it. (Suggested for children 8 and up).

Spiderman 2 does what even a Spidey can't.

Yes, for some reason they added popular stuff like bullet time, running on walls, and dodging bullets, which, with maybe the exception of dodging bullets (spider sense), seems to be just thrown in there. However, I like this game, because it really has the feeling of being a superhero, with the minor and major crimes to be stopped. Late in the game, though, the thugs suddenly start being able to block and dodge really well, which is annoying. They also got the GTA feeling (except you're a crimefighter instead of a criminal) with hidden tokens and extra missions like delivering pizza. It's fun to try and get everything, and just swinging and web-zipping is cool. The dialogue can also be good (Mysterio: "I am Mysterio!" Spidey: "Hmm, didn't I have Mysterios for breakfast?").

Maybe I'm just getting old, but...

...I can't even get past Rhino! Otherwise, I love this game. One of, if not the best, movie tie-ins ever made for PS2.

The camera moves well, and there's a ton to see and do. You really can go through all of Manhattan. Climbing the Empire State Building was particularly cool.

Spidey moves well, the controls are intuitive, the graphics are good, as are the sound effects.

To be honest, I was having so much fun just taking out the small-time crooks, that I was actually disappointed when it came time to fight Rhino, because I knew then that the story was really kicking in. Now I have to hunker down and figure out just what Spidey's really capable of!

This game is fantastic, and I recommend it for gamers of all ages.

Spiderman 2 was Actitivision and Treyarc's shot at revival from Spiderman. The graphics were greatly improved and gameplay improved as well. But What did not improve was the difficulty and replay ability.
In Spiderman 2 the graphics were awesome. The graphics looked like the actors.DOK OCK looked like Alfred Molina. The new geographical version of Manhatten is the best city in a video game next to the city in Jak 2. The people in Manhatten look too much a like.
The gameplay in Spider-man 2 is the top movie video game ever. You can swing around Manhatten, dive off the Empire State building, you can even go to the Statue of Liberty. You can atop petty crimes to world threatening crimes. You can battle classic villians like the Rhino,Mysterio, and Dok Ock. Don't forget to battle Shocker with the help of Black Cat. The street crimes get too repeatative after awhile.
Spiderman 2's biggest downfall is how easy it is as well as the replay ability. In my opinion any game in less than ten hours it is too easy. I beat Spiderman 2 in less then seven hours. The replay ability doesn'thelp out because what is the point of replaying this game over, to beat it quicker. If Activision and Treyarc spent more time on difficultyit would have been a better game.
So was Activision and Treyarc's shot at revival a success. No,this game fell short. If you choose looks over difficulty and replay value then it is the game for you. This game is not worth the money, I would definetly rent it though.

1 main downfall, but overall incredible

This game has only one real downfall, and this downfall is that the game does get repetitive after a short bit. The petty crimes, once you get the fighting controls down, get pretty easy and don't surprise you much. Also, the storyline is great, but it is almost too easy to play through it quickly.

That however, is this game's only downfall. I thought the first Spiderman game was good, but this one FAR outshines it. I am a big Spiderman fan myself, and I must admit that watching and making the character onscreen dive off the top of the Empire State, do three twirls through the dive, web swing for a bit, and find myself in the middle of Central Park is quite incredible. The game design is nothing short of genius. It's like Vice City with wall-crawling. I think this game definately makes it into my top 10, just for the experience of playing it through. It doesn't make the top 5, but the top 10 yes. And trust me, I play a LOT of games.
