Mafia...a work of computer art!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

This computer game is worth every penny used to buy it. The graphics are amazing, the story is gripping, and the game-play is easy and very enjoyable. I would definately recommend this game to anyone who likes the GTA games but is searching for something more fulfilling.

Great, except for two big problems.

One, you must drive everywhere, frequently from one side of the massive city to the other. This is fun at first and later quite tiresome. Two, many missions consist of multiple objectives with no opportunity to save progress in between. If you die at any point you have to undertake the mission from the beginning. You'll find yourself driving the same route over and over only to face the same obstacles again and again. This can be frustrating.

Overall, however, this game stands head and shoulders above the rest. It develops as a story into which you are slowly drawn --- believable, intriguing, and exciting. Even the frustrating aspects lend themselves to making you cheer out loud when you finally complete a difficult objective. This is a game to savor, although you probably won't want to play it more than once.

For ten bucks it doesn't get much better than this.

An offer you should not refuse!

This is My favorite game! It seems to be one of the greatest around! But before I say any more, lets get something straight here, this is NOT I repeat NOT a cheep rip off of GTA 3 or vice city, unlike some other games I know. Its concept is different in many ways. These include:

Platform: while both the GTA Vice city ect. and Mafia are multi platforms, the GTA games were developed for consoles such as the PS2, this line of games was converted for use on the PC. Mafia was developed for the PC and then ported or converted for use on game consoles.

Environment:

In the GTA game play, while the cops will chase you for killing or steeling a car, they will not pull you over for braking the speed limit. In fact, there is not speed limit. Also the driving characteristic are not realistic in the GTA line of games, you can total you car with ease. The rods look like they were made out of Lego blocks, sharp not rounded turns in the rod. As for keeping you car in the lane, forget it! This stems, in my opinion, form being developed for a controller. The drivers seem to be on the road to no ware. All the people seem to do is drive around aimlessly, the drivers don't park or do any thing except drive.

In Mafia- the cars handle realistic, remember, these are form the late 20's to late 30's. There is also a speed limit imposed in the game, if you brake it you face getting pulled over and ticketed or , if you go fast enough, arrested. The cars take realistic damage and don't fall apart like tissue paper. The turns are round and the cars will are able to stay in the lanes without a problem. The city also seems much more alive then in GTA. People drive their cars to various locations around the city, park, get out and walk around. They also get on and off the elevated trains which you, as the player, can too!

Game play:
Mafia: Many are quick to criticize this game for its structured story, there are other ways of accomplishing the missions, but the idea here is to promote a tight story line, which it does very well and there are plenty of ways to accomplishin the missions.

GTA: the story is so loose that it seems to have no direction at all. This makes it seem like one is going to play one mission after the other for a life time!

Now that, that is out of the way, let me begin by saying that my first encounter with this game was on the Xbox as birthday present last year. While I loved the realistic city environment, I hated the 3rd person control interface. It was almost impossible to target anyone, and there was a bug that made it impossible to get out of the ducking position. Frustrated, I "stored" the game. I never even got passed the 3rd mission.

Then, at the beginning of last summer, I saw the PC version of Mafia at my local Wall Mart for a mere $9 in the economy section. I was sure that this had to an older version as I had seen this game, recently in Best Buy for 20+ dollars! I figured Id buy it anyway. As it turned out it was the latest version with all of the patches included!

Being a PC gamer first, I was fully loaded for this game, including a Logitech wingman, formula force steering wheel and optical wheel mouse. The one thing holding me back, since I was now in my family's vacation home, was my highly unreliable and poor performing Gateway Pentium 1500, rejected and moved there for these reasons. Despite this, the game ran very well.
One thing I liked on the XBOX version of the game was how well the cars drove despite the use of a game controller, the PC version worked much better! I could now feel the road right through the wheel, pot holes etc. And thanks to my mouse, I could easily amim the guns.
I was able to get past the mission that I was stuck on in the XBox version within an hour or two as I got accustom with the controls and figured out how the AI worked. The AI has been criticized for its lack of inelegance, I think it gets the job done!

I really like the car chases.( I strongly recommend a string wheel, It really makes the game enjoyable!) You have to have skill to Keep up or get away form the person(s) you are chasing or the those who are chasing you, moving around other cars, knowing the city ect. What is more challenging is that you car is usually slow to begin with. If you take damage, it will get even slower and or harder to control.

After you are done with all of the missions, well I will just say that you are not done yet, there is still more stuff to do!

All and all, if you are a GTA fan A car buff, a 3rd person shooter buff or just looking for a game that wont brake the bank, get this game for the PC! At $10 its "An offer you should not refuse."

A PROMISE UNFULFILLED

I actually bought this game a few years ago and never got around to playing it. I finally opened it up and installed it about a month ago and gave it a ride. Unfortunately, that is all this game really seemed to be for me: a ride. I did not get very far into this game before becoming bored with the constant car driving missions. I am probably not being completely fair to the game, perhaps there was a lot of great action later in the game that did not involve being a taxi service, but I could not stand anymore of it and gave up. I am not a person whom enjoys timed missions; in fact, I find them almost completely useless and very aggravating. Nearly every video game I have ever played that has timed missions gets marked down in my book. Mafia is no exception. I found the graphics to be decent, especially for an older game. I also enjoyed the dialog quite a bit. But I just can not get past the monotonous driving sequences. How many times do I have to taxi some schmuck across town before I can actually do something else???

In my humble opinion, this is a slight knockoff of Max Payne, which is a much better game without the needless driving sequences. I love the whole Mafia storyline, I am just disappointed it didn't play out a little better in the beginning.

Tedious and annoying

A note to game developers everywhere. It's possible to create a challenging game that does not involve intensely annoying obstacles. Rule #1: all games should have a quick save option at any point in the game. No one enjoys going over the same mission over and over to get it right. Mafia only saves at the end of a mission or important task--or not nearly enough! This alone makes me want to pitch the whole mess. Rule #2: excessive amounts of driving around and map reading with old jalopy cars with extremely poor handling and dealing with other stupid drivers on the road is no fun attall! Way too much driving required. I drive enough to and from work 5x a week and deal with inconsiderate idiots on the road daily. I don't need it in a game I want to be a diversion from the grind of daily life.

If there were workable cheats available for this game it might be bearable. I would like to finish it, but only with access to cheats that actually work. I play games for enjoyment, not torture. I've searched the internet several times for cheats, and none of them work as described. A real disappointing game that didn't have to be.

Mafia is good but glitchy

Mafia is a good fps, but it is somewhat glitchy, slow, and rigid. As i have seen it compared to GTA 3, i think people are crazy! GTA3 is better. But for 10 bucks Mafia is worth the money.

SAY GOODBYE TO GTAIII...

THIS GAME WILL BLOW YOUR MIND!!! The world is [about] 2x larger than GTA3, alot more cars, alot more things you can do...Just a much more fun game than GTA3...Well, you can rate them about the same. But, you can literally do anything you want, there is a free roam mode, which is the entire city, besides the also EXTREMELY fun "countryside" part of the city. There is also a nice selection of weaponry to choose from, from the Colt 1911 to the Thompson 1928 (better known as the Tommy Gun). A good selection of missions too, mob hits to racing, this game has everything you would want in a Mafia game. Ok, lets talk about the cars, basically, every car you could ever imagine, the game advertises about 60 vehicles, you could probably multiply that by about 4 and thats the number of vehicles you would get. From the "Bolts" to the new Prototypes, this game has almost any vehicle you would find from that era. I think I've covered everything, I hope this helps, if you have any other questions about the game, please click on my name and e-mail me your questions... I highly recommend this game, best 3rd Person Shooter of all time... BUY IT!!!

Best game yet!

This is by far the BEST computer game I have ever played. Other notable shooter games like "Max Payne" and "Castle Wolfenstein" do not hold a candle! Lets see: to begin with, there is a good story line exhibited through frequent cut scenes which keep you interested in the characters long after the novelty of a new game wares off. The graphics are outstanding and the overal visual palette has such style. The opening introduction scene blew me away when I first viewed it. I realised immediately that this was the beginning of a new generation of games. The game comes to a crescendo with absolutely stunning visuals in the last mission. The sound is also as good as it gets. The variaty of missions and the distribution between driving and shooting missions break up the monotony of any shooting game and complement eachother. What can I say; I LOVED THIS GAME and was sorry to see it come to an end. I would love a sequel.

A Classic!!!

This is one of the best games I've ever owned. It has a great replay value, and has two free play modes on top of that. Graphics are great, sound is very immersive, and the control is similar to GTA3. The level of detail that was put into this game is exellent, and the cars, though renamed, are from that era and perform realistically. Police in the game will ticket you, arrest you, or try to kill you depending on the crime (running a red light, killing someone, smashing into another car, etc.). You can win many special cars in the "Free Ride Extreme" mode that are fun to drive, some top speeds of close to 200 mph, others are bulletproof or fast taxis. The story might remind you of the Godfather, or Goodfellas movies. I would buy this game if you like driving or FPS games.

Excellent Mafia Style Game

I recently purchased Mafia after downloading the demo a few days ago. The idea of being involved in the Mafia seemed like something new and exciting--indeed it is. Mafia's storyline is incredible. I haven't been this draw into a game in a very long time. I was able to easily connect with the character, and I'm having a blast every step of the way. The developers of this title have taken a lot of time to ensure the environment captures the player--30's style music, character clothing, building and street design, cars, stunning graphics, everything. It's simply captivating.

From a technical aspect, there is only one thing that annoys me slightly and that's the fact that the AI could have been better as many other reviewers have mentioned. Sometimes your 'goons' get in the way, or aren't very helpful at all. While it's an annoyance, it isn't enough of one to leave a bad taste in your mouth. One of the things that I like most about this title is the challenge involved. It's fairly realistic in terms of difficulty. When you first start, missions go fairly smoothly. Later on in the game, missions become seemingly more difficult; sometimes involving 20-30 minute sessions over a series of different 'sections' to complete one mission. It's not your typical stand in one spot and blow everyone in the room away without a scratch kind of game. Your going to die. A lot.

I haven't beaten Mafia yet, and I've been playing for about 16 hours or so--which I'm very happy about. I can't stand to pay money for a title that I beat in one night.

All around, Mafia is definately worth the money. In may not be so great in terms of re-playability, but if your looking for a sweet title to kill a few days on, Mafia is definately a great choice. Awesome game!
