If you have a PC and you like action games, a good storyline, terrific presentation, great graphics, and a whole lot of bang for your buck, then you should pick up this sensational game. Mafia is the tale of Tommy Angelo, driver-turned-mafioso henchman who works for Don Salieri and his gang. Combining aspects of Grand Theft Auto III and the terrific Max Payne games, Mafia delivers an unparalleled gaming experience that shows why the PC is the best platform around for the mature gamer.
The city of Lost Heaven is packed with style and substance (with nods to New York City and New Jersey), and the 1930's backdrop works perfectly. The cars, the characters, the missions, and the gunfights combine to keep you interested and wanting to come back for more. The game starts out a little slow, but once you get through the car race, the rest of the missions each become a game within itself. Assassinations, escorts, planting bombs, bootlegging, revenge...you name it. Everything involved with organized crime is represented, and represented well. The graphics are crisp, and blood flows plenty, as it should when you liquidate the members of an opposing family with a Tommy Gun in an Italian restaurant. The voice acting is superb, and the "flashback" method of explaining the story works perfectly. The sounds of the city make the entire game come alive, with each section of the bustling metropolis orchestrated to its own beat. The cars look and sound genuine, and the driving portions of the game, while sometimes tedious, are a necessity that you'll eventually come to accept and have fun with, especially when you're blowing away the windshield of your tail while hitting corners at 60 MPH in a flatbed truck!
There are some knocks against the game, such as not having the ability to save whenever you want (the game autosaves during key points). This can frustrate some, since many times, a difficult gunfight that promises quick death will have to be replayed multiple times since you can't save at will. However, there is a greater satisfaction after killing your opponents since the game will usually save after a tough shooting sequence! Also, the AI in the game is rather strange. Enemies are either completely stupid or very challenging, and all-too-often, you'll find yourself shaking your head in disbelief after you find that your enemy still stands despite the point-blank blast of your pump-action shotgun.
But don't be fooled: Mafia is wholeheartedly recommended. The driving/gunfight action sequences are the best in the business, and when you combine the tight storyline with the sensational mission design, you've got a game that will keep you enthralled for many nights. A great holiday gift for the adult PC gamer in your family. Omerta.
Could this be the greatest gangster game ever made?...

Mafia is a gangster masterpiece. This third-person 3-D action game takes place in a fictional city named Lost Heaven--a cross between New York and Chicago--and is about the daily life of a gangster from the '30s. More than 60 vehicles are available to drive through the 12 miles of environment; stop your car and get out whenever and wherever your want. Use weapons such as a Tommy gun, a Smith & Wesson model 27 Magnum, a pump-action shotgun, a baseball bat, or Molotov cocktails. Seven multiplayer modes are available via LAN or over the Internet, including Deathmatch and Capture the Flag.
I put this as my best games next to gta3

Its raw gritty violent and just plain fun. I beat the game last week and still cant get enough of it.

While this game boasts stunning graphics and an immense gaming "world," the emphasis is more on driving the many period cars of the 1930s, rather than tommy guns, booze, and all the great old gangster cliches that we've grown up with. Still a fun game, to the say the least, but doesn't quite deliver what the game seems to promise: an all-out, 3rd person mobster sim, a sort of 3rd person "Soldier of Fortune," which would have been a much more entertaining game. As it is, there are way too many "cinematic" cutaways, too many racing sequences (at one point you actually have to win a FIVE LAP race around a track. PLEASE! Since when did Don Corleone or Scarface Tony Montana have to do something so freakin' BORING?!?!?) Note to the developers: kudos on your artistry, but if you do a sequel, less racing (how about NO racing?), more gunplay and better storylines. Look to GTA 3 as an example of the perfect 3rd person immersive game experience. If you want to make a racing sim, please market it as such.

This game tuyrned out to be a different game than what I was expecting. I must have gotten my information mixed up.
What a great surprise. I really enjoyed this game, once I learned the keyboard commands. I am only about half way through, and they keep surprising me with new things. This game is a joy to play.
Perhaps the best game that I have ever played.

Mafia is truly an incredible game. I very much regretted reaching the end of the game. Everything about Mafia was enjoyable, EVERYTHING! Well, Ok, driving cars takes a little getting used to, but it's very, very minor. You can't lose with the price. I recommend buying a new copy, hopefully encouraging the manufacturer to create a Mafia2. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Amazing

I buy only the best PC games like Max Payne 2, Serious Sam,Halo etc...
This one is right up there with the best. This game is amazing.
You start out as Tommy, a cab driver. You play a few levels driving people around the city, which is fairly fun. After you later get a job my some Italian gangsters, the real fun begins.
The game is a lot like grand theft auto, in that the whole game takes place in the city. You can steal cars and drive around wherever you like during most of the missions. There is also a tram that you can take around to wherever a occasional side quests that you can accomplish. The game is like GTA, but it is much much much more polished, and the feel is just great. After playing this game for a while you will feel like a gangster. The in game cutscenes are beautiful and a pleasure to watch. Awesome voice acting, and I enjoyed the story very much. One thing that I don't think anyone can disagree with is the graphics. The graphics in this game are amazing. The sound is very very good too, but the graphics really help this game.
I personally think that this game is way better than the GTA series, although I've never played San Andreas.
One thing that is annoying is the driving. Don't get me wrong, the driving is very fun, but at the same time can be really annoying. The cars slide way too easily. But after a while you get used to it. As for the bugs in the game. There are practically none, so you probably won't need to get a patch. Ten Dolllars is a total steal for this game. I would gladly pay over forty for it. Some major work was put into this game and it shows. Handling guns in the game can be a little weird at first, especially the thompson; but by the end of the game you will have gotten really used to it. The whole game has a different feel than other games. Its hard to describe, but I think that it is great.
The city, in the game is huge, and there are cars everywhere and people everywhere. Cops will chase you if you unholster your weapon or speed or run through red lights. And they can be really annoying. But it all ads to the fun. The more you play the game the more fun it gets, especilly becaused of the better cars and guns you will get. You can steal any care that you have learned how to pick lock and park it in your garage. This game is long and there are different other side racing games in Mafia. You could spend a lot of time playing this game. There are a few really annoyiong missions, but it hardly takes away from the game. Don't belive me. Check out PC gamer or game spot and see what they have to say about it.
I don't recommend that you let kids play this game, mostly because of the bad moral choices you make and can make throughout the game. I'd say that is more M rated than GTA in a moral sense.

I'd read about Mafia back in the day when I was still trying to finish up GT3, but finally got around to picking it up a few weeks ago. I'd finished the game after 3 nights of playing and was very satasfied in the end.
I notice some folks are complaining about the driving. I wouldn't suggest this game for a console.. not at all. FPS keyboard + mouse setup for the 3rd person walking around, and force feedback wheel for driving around with the hood view make this game very playable.
Yes, I spent a lot of time starting missions over because of the difficulty, but I'm always happy to play a game that presents an honest challenge. The driving side of the game got some great attention to detail.. very low grip tires, very poor brakes, very little horsepower and best of all, realistic bumpsteer and under/oversteer characteristics. It was as to be expected.
Mostly, what won me over was the atmosphere. Driving my little rinky-dink Model A look-a-like around a bustling city complete with trolleys and elevated trains while listening to some light 30's jazz was relaxing. I really felt like I was our main character. I never get immersed like this in the GTA franchise.

Mafia is the best game i have ever played. It never gets boring, its so entertaining, and the grafics are the best ever. 9.3 stars out of 10.0 due to some tennical work. but i say a 10.0 anyway. 2x larger world than GTA3 and more missions. I have hade it for 2 weeks or more and i still haven't beat it. there are a ton of shootouts when you have to protect your boss and friends. But im not trying to give the game away i just recommend you buy this if you like games like and beeter than GTA3 but just a different time line thats all. two settings you get to due and that is free roam, story mode, and free ride extream but you have to beat the game before you get free ride extream mode and it includes no cops COOL! you can go to a gun shop and buy weapons and all shorts of stuff its so real! Buy this game its the best game ever to come out in HISTORY! i wonder what number two will be like? but i dont whant to give the game away so buy it and you will know what i am talking about bye.

There are alot of valid comparisons between this product and the groundbreaking, genre-redefining GTA3. Sadly, Mafia does not live up to the new precedent set by Rockstar's masterpiece. While you can roam Lost Heaven for hours, the game gives you no reason to do so. You can't jack any vehicle anytime, you can't rob from pedestrians, there are no mini-games or sub-missions, the vehicles are unfortunately realistic (slow, hard to control). In short, Mafia doesn't allow you to stray from the main storyline to cause as little or as much mayhem as your heart desires. This freedom to roam (and plunder) was what made GTA3 the game to beat.
