Max Payne meets GTA3... only not as good

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 2 / 4

Yes, as you know, Mafia combines the story-driven shooting of Max Payne with the (supposedly) free-form city sim of GTA3. Unfortunately, Mafia isn't worthy of the noble pedigree, and unless a patch fixes some serious performance issues (even on high-end pcs), I'd recommend holding off on this one.

In addition to being slow and boring, the driving sections run choppily, even on a Geforce Ti4600. To add insult to injury, the graphics in these sections aren't overly impressive; aside from nice reflections on cars, the draw distance is weak, even on the highest settings, and the human pedestrians are poorly animated. Furthermore, these mundane drives take up about two-thirds of your gameplay time, so I don't understand why so many reviewers shrug them off as a minor distraction.

The "foot" missions are another story. They're classic third-person action in the same vein as Max Payne (sans bullet-time). With atmosphere-rich settings ranging from a church to a harem to a series of nicely rendered rooftops, these sequences are the undeniable highlights. The question is: do you really want to wade through some of the most mundane, frustrating driving you've ever played to get to them?

Well. . . .

I bought this game under the assuption that it would be fun. Boy was I wrong. Although this is a mob game, don't buy it thinking that you get to shoot people all the time. You don't. You have to drive.

don't get me wrong, driving is fun, but driving at 40 miles per hour on nearly every mission loses it's fun after a while.

This game is also hard. Not hard as in difficult to find things and get through spots, but it's one of the most tedious games I have ever played. And believe me, I've played a lot.

what's the point of having a gun if you hardly get to use it. You get to drive around a city larger that one in GTA 3 and it takes over twice as long to get around. On the chance that you get to use a weapon, watch out, it seems as tho the enemys' weapons are always twice as powerful than yours, and they have twice as many bullets is every clip. On the subject of clips, there aren't any, so you have to sit for about 20 seconds and watch your guy fiddle with his gun. In a car, it takes about 30+ seconds.

The only reason I gave Mafia two stars is because it has outstanding graphics and a decent story line. The game has ideas, but they just get lost in a 30 minute, 40 mile per hour drive.

P.S. Freeride(a GTA3 knock-off attempt in the game, one of many)[is bad]. It has no purpose and you can't find anything you want to find. It also contains all of the errors in the above review.

Feast for the eyes!

I have never played Grand Theft Auto or Max Payne. The subject of mobsters just interested me so I bought Mafia. OH MY GOD!!! This is the most graphically intensive game I have ever seen! The graphics are so beautiful. One can immediately tell that the authors spent a lot of time and care developing this piece of art.

The amount of graphical detail - from the character's faces, to their movements, to cars and damage that can be inflicted on them... I just couldn't get enough of it! I would recommend a really good graphics card, lots of memory, and a good monitor to see everything the artists put in the game.

The plot line is also entertaining. I found myself drawn into the main character as the game progressed.

It took me about two hours to get used to the third person perspective since I've never played a comparable game. The default controls were confusing to me but I simply changed the key assignments to something I was used to and everything was fine.

If you're like me and have never played a third person game. Be prepared... You'll probably get hooked, too!

Great game!

This one is another winner in my opinion. I rated this one five stars. The game does an excellent job of generating a 1930's atmosphere with music and spectacular graphics. The story has depth and is very well done. The player takes on the role of a wiseguy (mobster) and is given missions by the mob boss that consist of anywhere from beating up somebody to assasination. It likely should have an adult rating.

There is alot of driving in the game with numerous 30's style cars for getting to destinations, evading police and fighting rivals. Each car having more horsepower as the game progresses. Driving was easy with the use of a joystick for turning/looking and the arrow keys for moving forward and backward.

The game ran fine with a Pentium III 930Mhz, 384Mb RAM, and a Riva TnT GeForce 2 MX with 32 Mb. It was choppy at a few points in gun battles with several rivals. Upgrading to 512RAM and at least a 64Mb video card would have smoothed things out. Wish I had that VisionTek Ti4600 128mb card I have been saving for. Makes me want to get those upgrades today.

This game didn't come out with a multiplayer module, a disappointment. The developers have stated that a multiplayer patch or upgrade is being worked on and should be released soon. They have stated that multiplayer will consist of capture the flag, death match and other scenarios.

This game is very entertaining for the adult gamer. I recommend a buy!

If you are into organized crime or the MOB, this is the game for you. It has got action, great story, amazing graphics and a all around "Tuff guy" kind of game. The best way I can describe this game is Grand Theft Auto III meets Max Payne, with of course a Mafia backdrop. A must have for your collection.

This game is game of the year!

I have been playing Mafia for about two weeks now and I have to say that I am still completely in love with it. Like everyone else says, the graphics are absolutely amazing! The storyline and plot are very cool. I like how the game progresses throught the era, allowing surroundings and vehicles to age with the times. I also am a fan of GTA3 however I have it for PS2 so I guess I can not compare system speeds to that. As far as this particular game goes, I have had absolutely no problem with it for slowing down during gameplay. I have a P4 1.3GH, 768mb RAM, and 128mb ge-force4, so I suspect those are the reasons that it runs so smoothly. I absolutely can see how slower systems may not act as well, afterall there is a lot going in the game.
I highly recommend this game to anyone who likes the GTA type game...Plenty of murder, shooting, robbery, and pure straight up gangsters. Buy this game. You'll love it!

This the best adventure/action game on the market right now. The game is set in the 30s in a fictitious city. The realism of the graphics and the accuracy of the driving are amazing. Being a mafia guy, you go on missions for your boss. There are 20 missions total, each of them include sub quests. You go from having to a kill a politician, robbing a bank, blowing up a hotel, to racing in a professional tournament. The environment is extremely varied: you drive by day and night and get to see all the parts of the city (the airport, the museum, the country side, mansions, cruise ship...). The music changes depending on what section of the city you are in. It really puts you in the mood of what's going on.

The level of difficulty is high, but not too hight that you can't finish the game. The hardest subquests in missions would take me sometimes 8 to 10 tries, but on average i would say 4 or 3 would be enough.

Then only downside of the game is that there is a lot of driving involved, even if the setting is amazing and really enjoyable to drive around, there are a couple missions that take too long because of 20+ minutes of driving required. I would say the total number of hours to play the game is around 100 hours.

You do need the most advance graphic card to play the game and at least a 800 mhz chip to enjoy the game fully.

Get it, you will have the thrill of your life. The end will give you chills. If GTA6 gets close to being as close as this, let me know and i'll consider maybe getting it.

Can't wait for Mafia 2 to come out in 2005.

Incredible game, great premise, lots of fun

The premise of Mafia is quite simple - you, as a high-level associate in the 1930s, are spilling your guts to a cop in hopes of leaving the family. The missions you complete are actually flashbacks as you tell your story. The latter-day storytelling and flashback missions are interwoven quite well, almost seamlessly.

The missions start out quite simple and gradually get harder. A hint - get *real* good with cars, fast, as you will soon need to be able to race, and win, to proceed.

Spend some time exploring the city - it is really quite engaging, with lots of traffic, pedestrians, and features such as bridges, underpasses, and detailed buildings.

Overall this game is quite fun and engaging, and can quickly become addictive. I highly recommend it.
