I have been a fan of video games since the early days, playing on the original Nintendo Game & Watch handhelds, before Atari, standing in Arcades pumping every quarter of my allowance into Galaga and Joust. Ever since Playstation released the original Resident Evil, I have been a huge fan of the series. Capcom is the best gaming company, and with RE 4, they proved it once again.
Resident Evil 4 improved on so many things from the past installments, most notably the load time and speed of the action. I used to hate climbing up stairs, but in RE 4 you actually climb them just by running up them. Opening doors doesn't slow down the action anymore, and you can even open them with a swift kick. The removal of the item box and addition of the briefcase was a great enhancement which also made it a little challenging because you only could carry and keep what you had room for.
The "Merchant" feature was a great addition to this game. Being able to sell and upgrade your weapons adds a whole new element of fun. The weapons were better than they have ever been, and the enhancements were sweet! I had a lot of fun waiting out of sight and taking out one of those erie, evil guards in the castle with the sniper rifle with one shot. Not able to buy ammo kinda sucked, but it also made it interesting.
Some reviewers have complained how the game isn't as "scary" as the series has been up until now, and they are right, but this is a whole new chapter. There was a whole new shock factor that was different from all of the zombies in the past. You can't argue that getting your head cut off by a psycho woman with a chainsaw wasn't scary...come on now! The villagers were freaky, the gigantic ogre's were a pain in the __, and the boss characters were challenging. All in all, they did an awesome job of keeping the horror factor where it should be.
All I can say is...this game is probably one of the best I have ever played for any console...Period. It's not only a fun game to play, but it is also fun to watch someone play, which isn't easy to do. You have to pick up a copy of this game if you haven't already done so. Keep these games coming, Capcom...I can't wait for Resident Evil 5!

I think this game rocks. The price is great too. I was really happy I didnt have to pay 50$. Now for all those crappy reviews saying it's not like the gamecube version well WHO CARES???? This is the ps2 version and NOT the gamecube version. Now, as a ps2 game I thought it was excellent and goes well along the story and the extra's are very cool. A must for RE lovers!

O.K. First of all, many gamers already know Resident Evil 4 was previously released for the gamecube early this year. The game set a new standard for not just horror games, but action games ingeneral. I own Resident Evil 4 on both systems and I'd just want to point out the fact that both games are pretty much identical. The considered differences between the two games are the better graphics and non loading times in the gamecube version and the extra weapons, costumes, and (seperate ways) ada minichapter game feature in the PS2 version. Considering the differences I advice those who don't own either one to buy it for the overall action. Those who own the gamecube version who aren't die hard fans, I suggest who skip the PS2 version. Those who own a gamecube version and your a true Resident Evil fan, I suggest you get Resident Evil 4 for the PS2 if you can, but don't trade in your gamecube copy for the PS2 copy. Trying to put these two games together and judge them by their differences is like putting two identical twins together and judging them because one has a scar on his right arm and the other has a scar on his right knee. So as I close my review I'd like to recape on a more real time perspective with new rules.
NEW RULES
1.Gamers, stop comparing the very slightly better coloring detailed graphics of the gamecube Resident Evil 4 version to the PS2 version. Who else besides a clothes designer or a freak pays that much atention to these things. If you're bothered by this, you have other issues to worry about, if you know what I mean.
2.Resident Evil fans must stop complaining about the fact that there are no zombies in Resident Evil 4. I own all the other RE games, trust me, they were getting boring. Perhaps know in Resident Evil 5 the zombies will run and be more intelegent like the zombies in the remake of Dawn of the Dead. Maybe then you'll complain that their not zombies.
3.Gamecube owners must stop the hate. Hating the RE4 version of the PS2 by only comparing the graphics to their beloved gamecube version only proves these people are haters. Their jealousy over the fact that Resident Evil 4 is know on another system is beyond noticable and forces them to question themselves. If you bought a gamecube just for RE4 when it came out and was proud of this, yes, you need to stop. If you thought the gamecube was the master when RE4 came out then No, You're wrong, the gamecube or any other system can't compare to the PS enterprise. Finally, If you're only a gamecube and RE4 owner then just keep playing. "Some things in the world are better off not knowing, this is one of them".
Even Better Than the GC Version

This could be the start of an interesting new phenomenon: double dipping video games, just like double dipping dvd's. First, Resident Evil 1-3 and Code Veronica X were ported from PSOne to GC. (Veronica actually went from Dreamcast to PS2 to GC) RE1 was totally redone, the other 3 were exactly the same as the previous version.
Well, transferring RE4 from GC to PS2 proved to be a step in the right direction. The graphics are exactly the same as on GC. Separate Ways was lots of fun, so was the movie gallery, and new weapons and costumes. It is definately worth it to buy this game for PS2.
A Great Resident Evil game !...an its about time too !

Here is my look on the game, when you play it, the graphics are just truly beautiful made and it really cannot get any better than that. I truly have to say that this game is a bit better than 3, however, the worst part is the aiming which is a tad sloppy, however, the controls are a bit decent. Very good game to add to the Resident Evil collection.
Blah!!!

Resident Evil 4 is fun for a couple of hours. However, after that, it quickly becomes mind-numbingly repetitive. What's worse, at least to me, is how much of a disgrace it is to the Resident Evil series. I truely feel that this game began its existance as a seperate game not related to Resident Evil at all. The few connections to the Resident Evil series seem very forced. This game also abandons the interesting genre of atmospheric survival horror to join the masses of generic shooter games. If you want a mindless shooter, RE4 might be for you. But if you want a true Resident Evil experience, I recommend the Resident Evil remake for the Gamecube. It's better in every way.
Much better than the GameCube version

It's the same game as on the GameCube, graphics look the same. I couldn't tell any difference. But the PS2 version controls a lot better. You can react quicker, it doesn't have key buttons in awkward places. It lets you take control and actually enjoy the game the way you should of in the first place. I'm a much better player on the PS2 version, and It's a shame I had already beat the game on GameCube. Still it was so smooth that I still almost beat it again on 2 rentals. I wanna add it to my PS2 collection.
The negatives of this game, well... the story is still one of the stupidest ever in a survival horror game. Rescue the Presedents duaghter and and save the world stupid.
Diss The Ps2 Version? Go Play Animal Crossing

First i havent played the Gamecube version so im not going to disscuss why the cubes version is better and what not.Instead im going to tell you Ps2 owners why to buy this game.
Ok the game is great before I bought it I was skeptical about it that ps2 hardware wouldnt work and the controls graphics etc.
Well there are load times but they only last about 5-8 seconds which is tolerable. The controls are very responsive they take about an hour to get used to then youll feel right at home. The graphics look good probally not as good as the gamecube but still good the head shots have never looked so good.
The game is long which is a good thing im on chapter 5 and 17 hours into it and there are 6 chapters so theres a few more hours to play.Theres minigames after you beat it and a game were you play as Ada so plenty of game time you defiantely get your money worth. Lots of weaponry Im not sure as an accurate number. The P.R.L. 412 laser cannon and the Gunpowder Bowgun are some new weapons.Theres a couple of new costumes to unlock.
I only have one complaint while your playing a game the voice audio production from the villagers is just horrible sounds like Metal Gear from the ps1 all in all its a great game and if you havent played the gamecube version than most defianetly get this game.
A monumental port for the aging PS2 hardware.

I've owned Resident Evil 4 for the Gamecube ever since it originally came out on that system. At the time, it was supposed to be a Gamecube exclusive but Capcom had some sort of falling out with Nintendo and subsequently announced they were going to port RE4 to the aging but still kicking PS2 hardware.
Though I own both a Gamecube and a PS2 (no X-box for me thank you), I (like most of the gaming world) scoffed at the very idea of Capcom attempting to port RE4 to the PS2 since it was built from the ground up for the graphically superior & more powerful Gamecube hardware. Rumors were abound on the internet of Capcom having to seriously change/alter/dumb-down the gameplay and visual presentation of the game due to the PS2's inherent limitations.
Well, lo and behold, was I shocked when I got to play the PS2 port of RE4. This is the same exact game.
It's got to be expected of course that the graphics took a bit of a hit compared to the Gamecube version. They're darker and less detailed. The lighting effects and frame rate isn't as good/crisp either. The character models also (especially in the case of the much larger enemies) are a bit blockier.
But that's when comparing it to the Gamecube version.
Taken on its own merits, this is the best looking PS2 game EVER. I'm talking about graphics that push the system even farther than God of War did.
I'm not sure how Capcom managed to work this kind of a wonder on the old PS2 hardware, but they did it in spades.
One small quibble I have is that the gameplay seems a bit loose compared to the Gamecube version, but that's a very small quibble at that.
The sound is also a bit muffled compared to the Cube version, but for the PS2 it is the best you'll ever find.
The biggest plus to this PS2 version is that it contains an extra mode/sidequest after you've beaten the game once in which you play as Ada Wong and it fills in the gaps plotwise in between what happens in the main game. This alone adds a few hours to the gameplay at that. There's also an added weapon in the main game as well that isn't in the cube version.
One thing I did notice is that ammo doesn't seem to be as plentiful in the PS2 version and there are more enemies at times which makes the game even harder.
Basically, it breaks down like this, if you have both a Gamecube and a PS2 and you want the best visual presentation of the game, get the Gamecube version.
If you want the most content and visuals aren't as big of an issue, then look the way of the PS2 version.
If you own just a Gamecube and don't own a PS2, you aren't really missing out on all that much. The extra stuff while cool, isn't that much extra.
If you just own a PS2 then you must buy this game.
If you own a Gamecube and a PS2 and already own the game for the Cube, then at least rent the PS2 version to play through the extra sidequest involving Ada Wong.
If you are a super hardcore fan of the series, then you'll want to own both versions.
I'm not going to purchase the PS2 version at the moment. If the price drops or I find it used at a cheaper price, I'll be getting it.
But at the moment, I have played through the Gamecube version so much up to this point, that the extra content was all the PS2 version was of interest to me.
But either way, I'm still shocked that Capcom pulled this off on the PS2 the way they did and as it stands, this gets my vote for PS2 game of the year for 2005.
