Resident Evil 4 for the PS2

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 110 / 138

Wow was I amazed! Try it, even if you do have the gamecube version. To me, this is worth the money and time.

Leon S. Kennedy is back and it's been six years later. The president ordered him to rescue the president's daughter from a religious group. This is most likely a survival horror game mixed with action and stategy.

The graphics on the PS2 is a little different. The texture isn't as good and it looks more darker. Still it's pretty good compared to the gamecube version.

The controls is excellent. It may be a little hard to get use to especially if you played the gamecube version. It gives you behind the shoulder look of Leon so you know where to shoot better than the other RE games. The laser device is nice as well because you can shoot at different parts of the body. You can also use knife attacks and kick your enemies as well. Make sure you find the weak spot!

You can't even relax during the cutscenes! You might have to either dodge, sprint, or somehow get out of trouble. Besides killing all of these ganados (Spanish villagers), you have to protect Ashley from getting killed or captured. If so, game over. You can also buy weapons and other items from a mysterious merchant and can upgrade as well. Too bad there is no weapon swap. The ganados have different ways to attack either with a scythe, dynamite, axe, or choke you to death! There is even chainsaw ganados! Many more enemies are introduced later on in the game. The bosses also are challenging and better than ever! There are some puzzles introduced to advance the plot. There are no typewriter ribbons. There is probably more things to point out but we need to talk about the extras!

Extras in the game such as Separate Ways. Which you play as Ada Wong and you play the same time and same place as Leon. There is no switching to characters but that's ok. There are more cutscenes and few more hours for you to enjoy. The new grapple gun is introduced which is a nice feature. It helps you get around to out of reach places as well. New weapons are here such as a laser gun which can kill enemies pretty easily and can stun them. The costumes are useful and pretty cool to say so myself. Leon looks like a detective and looks mysterious like. Ashley has a suit of armor which is a good thing. It can protect herself from gunshots or get killed in any other way. These extras can be obtained if you beat the game once. Extras from the gamecube version are also on here. The Mercenaries where you have to kill enemies to score points and unlock characters. You can even get an unlockable weapon. The Handcannon in the main game! There is also Assignment Ada where you play as Ada Wong collecting five plaga samples and mostly avoid enemies instead of shooting them. Heavy item managment is a must. There is no knife attacks so use guns! More costumes, unlockable weapons, professional mode where enemies are challenging than normal mode. Another round where you have all of your possesions from the previous file. Last but not least, a movie browser where you can view cutscenes from the game and Seperate Ways.

Overall, it's a great game. Especially for the PS2. Play it, even if you have the gamecube version. Since there is more features into this. Great job to Masachika Kawata and the others. If you don't have the gamecube version, here is your chance! I played the game through about 20-25 hours including the extras.

if you are thinking about picking this up i'd go for the nintendo gamecube version over this one. the graphics look much better and it plays smoother on the 'cube (plus playing on the gamecube means you can use the best video game accessory ever made= the ultra-dope wavebird wireless controller) . the game was designed for the gamecube, and the weird architecture of the ps2 didn't help the shifting over from that console. the game itself is fantastic but be aware that it is much better on the gamecube.

Upgrade???

Is it me!? or did the graphics decrease from the orginal version of this game?.....I'am a big RE Fan and was hoping for a fairly upgrade, but when u look at it! the extras are really minor and unnecessary for a game that was already perfect!, after playing it for 2 days straight i realized how bad the texture was on the game! which looked darker than the original gamecube version.........my advice for this ps2 version of the game is to avoid! i would suggest buying this game only if you don't have a gamecube! personally nothing can beat the original.

Hmmmmm!

Pretty good extras! love the new weapons and added features this game has in comparsion from the gamecube version. But! wasn't much of an impact for me as it did from the gamecube version! the reason why is because all the new features and cutscenes in this one made the game seem like a spoiler and also made the game unorganized!! and also the lack of graphics upgrade :( , i would reccomend playing the original first! but if u don't have a gamecube then ignore me!! and buy it anyway! cause this game is still an awesome game.

Better than Ever

I have been waiting for this game for a long time, and it was worth the wait. This game is even better for the Ps2 than the gamecube. Better Graphics, sound, and controls. Also some new bonus missions, costumes, and weapons. This game is a excellent game to play on Halloween, because it is an action and horror game. It is also alot cheaper. Buy it now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blah!!!

I think this game rocks. The price is great too. I was really happy I didnt have to pay 50$. Now for all those crappy reviews saying it's not like the gamecube version well WHO CARES???? This is the ps2 version and NOT the gamecube version. Now, as a ps2 game I thought it was excellent and goes well along the story and the extra's are very cool. A must for RE lovers!

O.K. First of all, many gamers already know Resident Evil 4 was previously released for the gamecube early this year. The game set a new standard for not just horror games, but action games ingeneral. I own Resident Evil 4 on both systems and I'd just want to point out the fact that both games are pretty much identical. The considered differences between the two games are the better graphics and non loading times in the gamecube version and the extra weapons, costumes, and (seperate ways) ada minichapter game feature in the PS2 version. Considering the differences I advice those who don't own either one to buy it for the overall action. Those who own the gamecube version who aren't die hard fans, I suggest who skip the PS2 version. Those who own a gamecube version and your a true Resident Evil fan, I suggest you get Resident Evil 4 for the PS2 if you can, but don't trade in your gamecube copy for the PS2 copy. Trying to put these two games together and judge them by their differences is like putting two identical twins together and judging them because one has a scar on his right arm and the other has a scar on his right knee. So as I close my review I'd like to recape on a more real time perspective with new rules.

NEW RULES

1.Gamers, stop comparing the very slightly better coloring detailed graphics of the gamecube Resident Evil 4 version to the PS2 version. Who else besides a clothes designer or a freak pays that much atention to these things. If you're bothered by this, you have other issues to worry about, if you know what I mean.

2.Resident Evil fans must stop complaining about the fact that there are no zombies in Resident Evil 4. I own all the other RE games, trust me, they were getting boring. Perhaps know in Resident Evil 5 the zombies will run and be more intelegent like the zombies in the remake of Dawn of the Dead. Maybe then you'll complain that their not zombies.

3.Gamecube owners must stop the hate. Hating the RE4 version of the PS2 by only comparing the graphics to their beloved gamecube version only proves these people are haters. Their jealousy over the fact that Resident Evil 4 is know on another system is beyond noticable and forces them to question themselves. If you bought a gamecube just for RE4 when it came out and was proud of this, yes, you need to stop. If you thought the gamecube was the master when RE4 came out then No, You're wrong, the gamecube or any other system can't compare to the PS enterprise. Finally, If you're only a gamecube and RE4 owner then just keep playing. "Some things in the world are better off not knowing, this is one of them".

Judge the game on the game and you'll find what a game it is

I did play Resident Evil 4 on the GC but I never bought it. Then it got ported to the PS2 so I thought hey why not? The game is good regardless so whether you're playing the GC or this version it's still an awesome game regardless. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's the best game this generation but still.

Story: It's a port so it's directly the same but unless you don't know the story I'll fill you in. There's no Umbrella or zombies in this, it's something else entirely. 6 years after Raccoon City got nuked because of the viral outbreak, former rookie officer Leon Kennedy has been assigned a quite important task: protect the President's family. Only Ashley, the daughter, gets kidnapped and spotted in Europe so Leon's on his way only to find that there's something up(of course).

Graphics: It's been roughly 9 months since I played the GC version so I can't exactly tell there is a drop but it's not as polished/detailed as the old one but still it's still great graphics. The thing oozes with atmosphere, exploding heads still look great and the back corners of europe look unsettling.

Sound/Music: Sound effects and whatnot is excellent. Shotgun blasts definately sound powerful here. Creatures have that unearthly quality while your main enemy here(they're called Ganados but I'm not spoiling what they are) speak spanish and they repeat themselves a bit too much. As for music, it's more ambient than anything, no catchy themes or anything here. But as usual the music really unsettles you to the point where you know something's going to happen but nobody's telling you anything.

Gameplay: Nothing's really changed except for 2 new weapons, a new mode featuring, umm, a RE veteran. Detractors of previous RE's(such as myself) couldn't get past one thing: the control scheme. Essentially it was like you drove a tank, regardless of where you were pointing, up was always forward rather than it being 3D controls. This made precious ammo wasted since you couldn't see if you were actually getting anywhere. Well first there's several overhauls: camera is now Splinter Cell-like with a not-quite third person camera. This makes maneuvering and aiming a hell of a lot better. The control setup is still the same but because of the camera perspective it's not as bothersome.

There's also plenty of ammo so you're not blindly firing shots. Some might find there's too much ammo actually. I literally had to rearrange my inventory to make it fit. The other overhaul is that in previous RE's, you needed an ink ribbon to save so no ink ribbon, no save. This was quite a problem when you went an hour without saving then bleeh, dead. Another overhaul is that in the old ones, there was a magic box where you stored weapons, ribbons, ammo and such. This connected to others so you never had to go to one such box to get one ammo, a box right next to you would have it. Well not so here because Leon carries an attache case so you get a portable briefcase with customization for it to fit more stuff since guns tend to take up space(with a rocket launcher taking up a good 20 spaces or so.

If there's one thing that hasn't changed is the dialogue/voice overs. There just as B-movie as ever. It's hard not to cringe/laugh at lines like "you're right hand comes off?" when he meant a villain's sidekick is rather sad. Voice acting also isn't the best. Hearing Ashley go "Leon!" several times isn't that good for sanity. However it's Resident Evil and you don't play it for Metal Gear Solid voice caliber.

The big attraction is Separate Ways, where you play Ada Wong for 5 chapters with a certain goal. They're really quick and I beat all 5 in about 2 and a half hours but mainly it's for fun. For example, why did the church bell ring in the prologue? Or how Ada managed to save Leon from a certain death? It's all here. One thing that sucked is the inventory was extremely limited to at least 4 guns or so and you couldn't even upgrade the stupid things.

You should judge the game on the game itself rather than what Capcom did wrong going from Gamecube to PS2 so if you don't judge it, you'll find an excellent game underneath.

Diss The Ps2 Version? Go Play Animal Crossing

First i havent played the Gamecube version so im not going to disscuss why the cubes version is better and what not.Instead im going to tell you Ps2 owners why to buy this game.

Ok the game is great before I bought it I was skeptical about it that ps2 hardware wouldnt work and the controls graphics etc.
Well there are load times but they only last about 5-8 seconds which is tolerable. The controls are very responsive they take about an hour to get used to then youll feel right at home. The graphics look good probally not as good as the gamecube but still good the head shots have never looked so good.

The game is long which is a good thing im on chapter 5 and 17 hours into it and there are 6 chapters so theres a few more hours to play.Theres minigames after you beat it and a game were you play as Ada so plenty of game time you defiantely get your money worth. Lots of weaponry Im not sure as an accurate number. The P.R.L. 412 laser cannon and the Gunpowder Bowgun are some new weapons.Theres a couple of new costumes to unlock.

I only have one complaint while your playing a game the voice audio production from the villagers is just horrible sounds like Metal Gear from the ps1 all in all its a great game and if you havent played the gamecube version than most defianetly get this game.
