Somebody Has To Tell The Truth

Folks, this is one of the best games ever made, with horror movie scares and action Capcom really put their hearts into this. The aiming system is updated from previous RE's and it feels like it should've always been like that. Every second in this game you're paranoid, my girlfriend who hates videogames loves this game, we beat it together over about 2 weeks and we were both jumping out of our seats whenever the enemies popped out at us or when we were blasting our way out of a corner to survive. I actually felt like we were leon and ashley as corny as that sounds but with the soundtrack and the scenery it really felt like all we had was a gun and bullets and we had to survive by any means. This is the best game ever! Any fans of previous RE'S will be poop thier pants for this game i know I did.

The biggest bait and switch in horror gaming history

Basically if you liked Resident Evil Dead Aim, Code Veronica and any of the movies that were out in theaters, then you're in for a REALLY big treat because Resident Evil 4 is everything those games proffered in being loud, dumb and obnoxious action-packed thrillers with amazingly stupid dialogue (stupider than the first game's dialogue), embarrassingly weak plots (weaker than the original game's plots) and being virtually devoid of atmosphere, pacing, even shock factors. God help you if you played the original games and liked them for their atmosphere, decent characters and adventuring aspects of game play because to you the huge glossy four on this game (that surprisingly comes before the title) will feel like the biggest bait and switch in the history of horror gaming.

Do I even REALLY need to explain how stupid this game is? I understand what Capcom was trying: they thought that a new, smarter enemy would be a lot scarier and in theory they would be, but they seemed to forgot that adding a bunch of BS action-packed attacks to the hero cuts down atmosphere faster than a lawn-mower to grass. Would you be terrified of a group of people you could decapitate almost immediately with a single round-house kick to the head? Would you be scared of possessing the ability to toss big, heavy combat knives effectively and always hit your target? Would you be shivering if you somehow possessed the ability to jump off of thirty/forty foot ledges, land on your own two feet and NEVER GET HURT?? What the Hell!! How could any of this qualify as horror?

Capcom basically took Leon from the second game and turned him into a Devil May Cry character! And his change in attitude doesn't make any sense, either: how can a well-grounded, mature young man lose so many brain cells that he practically regresses to an angsty middle-school student in a manner of six years? Does a man become more mature by the amount of curse words or smugly witty commentary he spouts?

I used to love Ada Wong from Resident Evil 2 because there was something interesting about her whole situation and you actually started learning a little bit about her... there was something human about her then. Well, there certainly isn't now! Not only did they change her character, they turned Ada into an action-packed, back-flipping, bullet-timed super woman in quite possibly the most laughable and offensive spy get-up I've ever seen in any visual media.

And how about that 100% Hollywood, back alley garbage plot? European terrorists? A plot against the president's daughter? Some completely unknown, unheard of bacteriological entity that just appeared out of nowhere and has absolutely nothing to do with Umbrella? Oh no!

Everyone compliments the game play, but all it really comes down to is a rip-off of Splinter Cell used in a completely inappropriate situation. The reason why the over-the-shoulder zoom worked in Splinter Cell was because you didn't have to constantly worry about people crawling on screen at all sides while you're trying to sharp shoot. Oh yeah, and how about those Quick Time Events, eh? Since when was mashing buttons scary? Quick Time Events aren't even FUN! They're obnoxious little mini-games tied into the game's cinematic moments (particularly in moments where you'll probably end up shouting "Oh now what" instead of admitting fearfulness) made to keep you from sitting back like you usually do so you can watch helplessly as your character performs so many hyperactive super moves according to random buttons they might as well be dancers in a Merce Cunningham production on the surface of Titan hooked up to electrodes.

The moments the game even remembers it wants to be a horror game run few and far between: all the game has in its favor is an inexplicable water-boss and naked, seven foot, sniffling, nose-less zombies that look like they were designed in about a minute. That's it. The rest of the time you'll be gunning down crazy people (NOT zombies), manga villains and guarding a prostitute.

Look, I can see why most people venerate this game as a good action game (which is why I give it a 2 for fun), but really, trying to find the game scary, terrifying or worth more than a rental is pointless.

the gamecube version is much better...

if you are thinking about picking this up i'd go for the nintendo gamecube version over this one. the graphics look much better and it plays smoother on the 'cube (plus playing on the gamecube means you can use the best video game accessory ever made= the ultra-dope wavebird wireless controller) . the game was designed for the gamecube, and the weird architecture of the ps2 didn't help the shifting over from that console. the game itself is fantastic but be aware that it is much better on the gamecube.

Judge the game on the game and you'll find what a game it is

I did play Resident Evil 4 on the GC but I never bought it. Then it got ported to the PS2 so I thought hey why not? The game is good regardless so whether you're playing the GC or this version it's still an awesome game regardless. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's the best game this generation but still.

Story: It's a port so it's directly the same but unless you don't know the story I'll fill you in. There's no Umbrella or zombies in this, it's something else entirely. 6 years after Raccoon City got nuked because of the viral outbreak, former rookie officer Leon Kennedy has been assigned a quite important task: protect the President's family. Only Ashley, the daughter, gets kidnapped and spotted in Europe so Leon's on his way only to find that there's something up(of course).

Graphics: It's been roughly 9 months since I played the GC version so I can't exactly tell there is a drop but it's not as polished/detailed as the old one but still it's still great graphics. The thing oozes with atmosphere, exploding heads still look great and the back corners of europe look unsettling.

Sound/Music: Sound effects and whatnot is excellent. Shotgun blasts definately sound powerful here. Creatures have that unearthly quality while your main enemy here(they're called Ganados but I'm not spoiling what they are) speak spanish and they repeat themselves a bit too much. As for music, it's more ambient than anything, no catchy themes or anything here. But as usual the music really unsettles you to the point where you know something's going to happen but nobody's telling you anything.

Gameplay: Nothing's really changed except for 2 new weapons, a new mode featuring, umm, a RE veteran. Detractors of previous RE's(such as myself) couldn't get past one thing: the control scheme. Essentially it was like you drove a tank, regardless of where you were pointing, up was always forward rather than it being 3D controls. This made precious ammo wasted since you couldn't see if you were actually getting anywhere. Well first there's several overhauls: camera is now Splinter Cell-like with a not-quite third person camera. This makes maneuvering and aiming a hell of a lot better. The control setup is still the same but because of the camera perspective it's not as bothersome.

There's also plenty of ammo so you're not blindly firing shots. Some might find there's too much ammo actually. I literally had to rearrange my inventory to make it fit. The other overhaul is that in previous RE's, you needed an ink ribbon to save so no ink ribbon, no save. This was quite a problem when you went an hour without saving then bleeh, dead. Another overhaul is that in the old ones, there was a magic box where you stored weapons, ribbons, ammo and such. This connected to others so you never had to go to one such box to get one ammo, a box right next to you would have it. Well not so here because Leon carries an attache case so you get a portable briefcase with customization for it to fit more stuff since guns tend to take up space(with a rocket launcher taking up a good 20 spaces or so.

If there's one thing that hasn't changed is the dialogue/voice overs. There just as B-movie as ever. It's hard not to cringe/laugh at lines like "you're right hand comes off?" when he meant a villain's sidekick is rather sad. Voice acting also isn't the best. Hearing Ashley go "Leon!" several times isn't that good for sanity. However it's Resident Evil and you don't play it for Metal Gear Solid voice caliber.

The big attraction is Separate Ways, where you play Ada Wong for 5 chapters with a certain goal. They're really quick and I beat all 5 in about 2 and a half hours but mainly it's for fun. For example, why did the church bell ring in the prologue? Or how Ada managed to save Leon from a certain death? It's all here. One thing that sucked is the inventory was extremely limited to at least 4 guns or so and you couldn't even upgrade the stupid things.

You should judge the game on the game itself rather than what Capcom did wrong going from Gamecube to PS2 so if you don't judge it, you'll find an excellent game underneath.

This game is great!

Okay, I bought this game last night. I am not even close to finishing it, but it is so freakin' awesome i had to tell someone. The graphics and sound are amazing. The scare factor is pretty good too. One time I was shooting at someone in a window, and a girl zombie with a scythe came from behind me and stuck it in me! The zombies (i guess that's what they are!) are extrememly smart and like to gang up on you. The chainsaw wielding ones are extrememly difficult to kill. I don't even know if you CAN kill them! They just run up to you and cut your head off! ALso, the controls and gameplay are a LOT better. The last games always had really clunky controls and everything always moved rrreeeeeeeeaaaaaaaallllllllyyyyyyyy sssssslllllloooooowwwww. Not in this game! Everything is so fast paced. Sometimes I wish the bad guys wouldn't move as fast! But, this game is so awesome. If you don't have it already, go out and buy it NOW!!

The Greatest RE Of Them All!!!!!!!!!!!

What can I say this is without question the greatest RE in the series!!!!! The graphics, gameplay, everything is right on "Q" for what a PS2 game should be. I will be honest and say that the Gamecube version is graphically superior to the PS2 version but who the hell cares?!!!!! The only thing that really truly matters is the fact that this gem has finally been released to the PS2. Those of us who hung tight with sony and didn't jump ship just for this game after it was announced for the GC can finally rejoice in the glory that is the first definitive sequel since the Code Veronica release almost seven years ago. a rather lenghty dry spell from capcom. Not with standing the disaster that was OutBreak. The weapons are awesome in this game with very nice updates to the sniper rifle, mine thrower, and rocket launcher. The game is in a way a slight turn by capcom in terms of there are'nt as many puzzles to solve. Which is something this franchise has always had a considerable emphasis on. This is just pure adrenaline, Lay the smackdown on their candy asses jaw dropping fun!!!! I in a way kind of felt by my first impression that this was kind of castlevanyia meets RE in a way. You know being in that dark far away land surrounded by hostile locals. The only thing I really have to gripe about is the loss of the auto aim feature. But other than that this game is flawless for a PS2 RE game. Replay value is awesome consiering that there is an exclusive side adventure only available to the PS2. In addition to the Assignment ada minigame there is a lenghtier mini game called Separate ways where you get to cover more or less the same ground as leon, but through ada's perspective. You also have the option of starting a new game after you clear it the first time, and when you replay you can start the new game with everything you had in the end of the last game. Bottom line is if you already played this for the gamecube then you ain't missing a whole lot. However if you are a die hard PS2 fan that hasn't had the opportunity to play this game until just now all I can say is get it get it get it get it NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will not be disapointed!

graphics and action superb, puzzles and story lacking.

I may be in the vast minority in the opinion that I express in this review, but in a way I find past Resident Evil games more enjoyable. This game has more riveting action, and better graphics, however the old titles of the Resident Evil series embodied a better story and better puzzles. Those are the games that I remember playing into the morning hours, day after day. I am not undermining this one's greatness, because it is a brilliant game.

The best game of 2005, but Not enough d salvadors!!

This is one brilliant game!! They got lots of influence from the 'texas chainsaw massacre'When i started playing, i didn't really like the controls and i thought to myself "no, this game is gonna be ruined by bad controls!!".But, after the first battle with the villagers i didn't even notice the controls, and then i thought to myself " wow, i love these controls!". They really are a dream when you get used to them(which is about 5 mins in). This scene has Your character, Leon, inside a cabin with around thirty villagers attempting to break in through the upstairs windows, through the doors and any other way they can.Panicing, you push the cupboards and chests of draws in front of the doors and windows, and knock down the ladder that the villagers are using to get in upstairs. Thinking you are safe, everything goes quite and then you hear the unmistakeably creepy sound of a chainsaw engine being started. Then, suddenly, the blade of the chainsaw slices through the door with brilliantly realistic sound effects. This is your first introduction to Dr. Salvador, the games chainsaw weilding, screaming maniac who is more than a reference/homage to 'The texas chainsaw massacre's Leatherface. H eis dressed simliar, and instead of a human flesh mask, he wears a bag over his head( probably some kind of potatoe sack). Most people call him 'The chainsaw man', but he is the village doctor.Although he appears dead, his body doesn't dissapear after you've blasted him with a shotgun in the face 5 or 6 times. Inevitably, he shows up in the game further on, but only a dissapointing 4 or 5 times.
However, more chainsaw weilding frieks show up in the form of the Bella siters, who aren't nearly as scary as Dr. Salvador, but still better than nothing. The games other enemies, the villagers, are the typical and most common enemy in the whole game, as they replace zombies completely. They are actually called 'Ganados' which is spanish for 'the cattle'(The game is set in spain),but i just call them zombies, after all the years ive spent yelling "theres a zombie behind you!!" to my mates playing classic resident evil titles. If you have been playing 'Resident evil' games from the very beginning and are wondering wether this is a loyal installment to the rest of the series. Well i can tell you truthfully, i was just the same, and i think the change in style, looks, and basically everything else that matters is definately not a bad thing. It is all for the better, and moves the story forward. Speaking of moving forward, there are characters in this game who will bring back memories of previous games like Ada Wong-She was in resident evil 2, and Albert Wesker-He was in the very first Resident evil as a good guy on your team, but has since then crossed over to the dark side. Also, Your character, Leon s. Kennedy( the 's' is for Scott), was also first introduced in Resident evil 2.
Although the majority of the Ganados run, most of them are really just zombies. In the Castle, for example, there are enemies who are weaponless, and just stagger towards you, just moaning and groaning like a tpical zombie. They even attempt to eat your flesh like our old zombie friends.Overall, these kind of enemies really are just zombies. They're just not CALLED zombies. This will please old fans, but these zombie like fiends don't show up often. This is an absolutley brilliant game.Personally, i think this game is a masterpiece, a work of art. It captures fear brilliantly, and is relentless in bringing, shocks, jumps, extreme deaths(especially Dr Salvadors chainsaw attacks, who decapitates leon vigourosly while he screams with his saw in hand. The regenerators are utterly scary as heck, and you will wet your self walking round corners while they whisper and cackle friekily.I recommend this game to anyone who loves violence, or resi fans of the past. It is the perfect opportunity for non resi fans to join the fun, as the story has started again leaving new things to happen at any time.It is also open ended so expect a sequel soon!!!
It rocks.
Ryan

This Game is challenging, yet not too hard to play, so I didnt find myself banging my head against the floor in anguish, trying to finish it. It was long, yet entertaining...every minute. It is the ONLY Game is the 5 years of playing games (computer & Playstation) that I will play again. As a horror fan, I loved Fatal Frame and Silent Hill and fancied Resident Evil...But now this game tops every game Ive ever played. Scary...exciting...Interesting. Controls were cool too. In the past I had a hard time with Resident evil controls; eventually catching on. I look forward to Resident evil 5, and I heard it is only going to be released on x-box 360. I may be wrong...but if it is, Im buying an x-box 360!

Can't get much better

Resident Evil 4 - Circa 2005

GOOD:
- Fast and furious game play
- Original Resident Evil story with little to do with pervious Resident Evil games

BAD:
- When compared to other Resident Evil games this one is a little light on story
- You have to buy almost all new guns and upgrades (which for some people is a pain)
- Graphics slightly better on Game Cube

IF IT FITS YOUR TASTE:
- This game is almost nothing like pervious Resident Evil games form the game play being very fast moving, to the story having no zombies or umbrella company
- This game while harder combat wise when compared to other Resident Evil game is much easier in terms of puzzles

GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO:
- Resident Evil: Zero
- Resident Evil (Remake on Game Cube)
- Splinter Cell (not for story or stealth, but for shooting aspect that is similar in both games)

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- Beating the game once will unlock Leon's Resident Evil 2 costume (police uniform) and a 1920's Gangster costume, An arcade style battle mini-game, and a bouns Ada mini-game that is more expanded from the Game Cube version
