Resident Evil 4 is the only Resident Evil game I actually like. It's easier thanks to the over-the-shoulder aim instead of the stinkin' auto aim, enemies drop ammo/money after their deaths, and no more ink ribbons!
Takes place in Spain(not Raccoon) and Leon Kennedy is investegating the kidnapping of the US President's daughter and the disappearences of others trying to rescue the girl. Leon will soon enter a world of new enemies. No zombies(yeah no zombies)just Ganados, evil villagers infected with a sinister virus, evil dogs, and evil freyers. Ada Wong appears a couple times, the President's daughter is Ashley and the main bad guy is Lord Saddler. Another new character is a merchant that appears throughout the game selling weapons, ammo, and health items. The new virus is more evil than the T or G-virus. It gives Saddler the ability to mindcontrol over who's infected.
I love the graphics, gamecube style graphics. Another new part of the gameplay are tapping buttons quickly. The enemies are slightly harder than the zombies and still require to be shot in the head. The chainsaw Ganados like shown in the screenshots, the cover etc. are deadly, one hit and off with your head. The boss fights are not that hard but some of them can be.
Again this is the only RE game I like. I didn't like the others because I couldn't beat them but I've beatened this one. Replay value is high if you want to use unlocked weapons or unlock more.
I highly recommend this game to all RE fans, survival horror fans, and action fans. Five stars! *****

My name is Adam and am 16 and now live in Dubuque Iowa. I think this one of the top 10 best video games of all time, well at least since july of 2006, LOL. As i said in one of my other reviews Resident evil is almost a second religion. I have played every resident game ever. and love 'em all. the ones i don't like as much are Gaiden, survivor, outbreak and dead aim but i still like 'em. It's just that why don't they have one where everyone gets together and destroys umbrealla and everyone lives happily ever after. in regards to carlos in the third one it nevers says what happens to him. but anyway i have all resident evils and all the books. all the cheatbooks and some of the toys. i also have the movies on dvd. in regards to this game I love it. it's sooo fun. even the merchant is cool but it never says what happens to him. Ada is beautiful and so is ashley. I love the new monsters and the fact that you can jump and kick. Sadler and salazar the midget is funny. I love it when leon says 2 salazar " If you don't need me then get off my back old man. LOL. then leon throws a knife in his hand. it must have something to do with the fact that salazar is one of them. Leon sure is tough. Thank you amazon.
Not old style Resident Evil, but oh, so cool

Yep, this isn't the old game revisited for a fourth outing, but a totally different animal. First off, it's not the survival horror that I knew and loved. This is much more of a pure action/shooter. Yes, there are elements of the previous incarnations, but this is so big a departure, it could really have a different name. That said, the action is so much more with this game. From the aiming system, to the interaction with the environment, to the truly stunning graphics, this is massive leap forward, creating a BIG game. And not just in scale, it seems to last longer than some of the earlier ones. Just when you think you're reaching the end, a whole new environment springs into life and off you go on another adventure. Oh, and the weaponry is bigger and better too! Don't come to this expecting the horror of earlier Resident Evils or the atmosphere of Silent Hill, but if you want to blow holes in the undead, boy are you in for a treat!

In RESIDENT EVIL 4, Leon Kennedy, the main character of RESIDENT EVIL 2, returns. Leon is now a special agent of the U.S. government. The President of the U.S. has had his daughter, Ashley, kidnapped and Leon is sent to rescue her. Her location has been determined to be in a small, remote European village. Leon is dropped off at the location by two police officers. Leon attempts to communicate with the locals but they try to kill him. Leon survives the initial encounter, but the police officers who dropped him off meet a fate far worse. It turns out that the local citizens, ganados (which is Spanish I believe for cattle), have been infected with an alien parasite. Once infected the parasite eventually kills the person and takes over the body and those who are controlled by the parasites are under the command of certain "leaders". The leaders of the ganados cult have very big plans for world domination and Ashley is an important key in those plans. So Leon sets forth killing the villagers as he first finds and rescues Ashley. It turns out that he and Ashley have both been infected with the parasite and before they can escape they have to find a cure.
The game is pretty exciting and takes between 25-30 hours to complete for an average player. It also has a lot of replay value. Most of the time you play as Leon, but sometimes the player plays as Ashley and there are a few instances where both characters must work together. Out of all the weapons in the main game, I preferred to use the shotgun for close range fighting though Leon also has a knife which I would recommend, in order to save ammo, using for close range fighting with just one enemy. Enemies aren't completely mindless in the game and reveal some intelligence, such as dodging attacks, carrying shields, and joint attacks from different fronts. In my opinion besides some of the bosses the most difficult and frightening characters to fight where the chainsaw ganados. Those things just freaked me out and it is worse hearing the chainsaws but not seeing where those particular enemies are. Every time I heard that chainsaw noise while playing the game it gave me the creeps.
The graphics are pretty decent, but it was the music which I found most haunting. There were many times when Leon would commit a certain action and this haunting music would begin that gave me goosebumps because I knew some enemy was going to appear and sometimes they would just appear out of nowhere. Something different from many other games is that you can't always relax during cutscenes. Sometimes you have to perform actions that appear on the screen or Leon dies.
Upon beating the game, several extra features are unlocked including different costumes for Leon and Ashley; a shooting mini-game entitled mercenaries where you can unlock up to five different players; a separate mini-story line entitled "Separate Ways" where you play as Ada Wong and learn more secrets that weren't revealed in the game; another mini-game entitled "Assignment Ada" where you play once again as Ada, but on a different assignment than the one in the main game; a movie browser where you can watch all of the cut scenes from both the main game and "Separate Ways"; and a list of Ada's files from "Separate Ways".
A very entertaining game that is a nice addition to the Resident Evil franchise, even if there aren't any zombies.
You've heard it before...

...So i'll say it again, and confirm it. The GameCube version (soundwise and graphically) is ALOT better. But...the gameplay in general on this PS2 take of the game, is all the same. And, comes with extra material NOT AVAILABLE to GameCube fanboys. This extra material was probably added due to the fact that RE4 was originally PROMISED as a "GC ONLY" game. But PS2 fanboys probably bitched about this, and got their way. So congratulations PS2 fanboys, RE4 is now on the PS2. And it's still PRETTY DAMN GOOD!
It is highly known that GameCube fanboys are going to say "not as good as..." and PS2 fanboys are going to say "equally as good as..." but, i'm going to set the record straight.
-The GC version is infact, better.
-The PS2 version is ALMOST as good.
X-Play considered RE4 to be one of the BEST games of 2005 for the GC (and all in general)...and putting it on the PS2 hasn't changed a damn thing at all. It's still equally as fun, still extremely challenging, still somewhat creepy (though due to the sound being muffled a bit, the creep-factor is kind of lowered), and absolutely stunning. For PS2, this is a really good game. I haven't played something this fun (honestly) since God of War. And that's (to me) the BEST game of 2005 for the PS2.
I'd suggest getting this strictly for the Bonus Missions (Ada Wong: Seperate Ways sidequest), Clothing, and Weapons that aren't available in the GC version. Because if you're getting this, hopeing for an exact douplicate of the A++ GC version (in which has everything perfectly done) you wont find it here.
But...you WILL be getting a VERY close runner up, in which is ALMOST equally as good.
I HIGHLY suggest RE4 for the PS2. But only if you don't have a GameCube. If you have a GC, I suggest getting the GC version of the game instead. But if you only have a PS2, get the PS2 version.
Here's a list of the games good and bad qualities (ie - Pros & Cons).
Pros:
-Gameplay
-Storyline
-Bonus Material
-Fun Factor
-Replay Value
Cons:
-Lowered Graphic Quality
-Muffled Sound at Times
I give it a 4/5 due to the cons. But overall...this is a GREAT remake that is not to be missed out on by PS2 owners, whom are fans of RE.
Spellbinding, strong contender for BEST EVER PS2 game

Resident Evil 4, to keep the synopsis short and sweet, follows the exploits of Leon S. Kennedy, the rookie cop from the still-brilliant sequel Resident Evil 2, as he touches down in rural Spain, to rescue the President's daughter from an as-yet unknown group of kidnappers.
And really, since the game pitches you headlong into some of the best and most rewarding plot-driven action moments I've ever been lucky enough to experience in a video game, there's very little need for me to elaborate. That, and the fact that I hate spoilers! Trust a man who's been a confirmed games player for sixteen years: this is a great *expletive* game.
GRAPHICS: So what if the Cube original version of this game has better graphics? I challenge all but the most superficial kind of player (you know, the kind that's happy with endless driving and fighting game sequels) to be anything but delighted when they see what magical Capcom has managed to do with the six-year old techology behind the PS2. The overall visual theme (washed-out colours, smooth animations, excellent lighting) is very reminiscent of that king-of-atmospheric-games, Silent Hill 2, and the character and enemy animations are first-rate. Enemy design, from the lowliest (villagers, crows) to the more impressive boss battles (the first and second bosses are actually jaw-dropping) is worthy of awards, and the whole visual feel of Resi 4 is one of supreme mastery and undeniable creepiness.
SOUND: Voice acting's pretty damn great - in a nice change for a Resi game - and the music is excellent. Finally, here's a Capcom survival horror with real aural punch and muscle. The characters seem more real and their situation seem all the more immediate and tense because of the obvious lengths the sound designers have gone to to bring a deeper sense of the game's experience to us.
PLAYABILITY: Here's the real jewel in the crown: Resident Evil 4 is one of the most intuitive and playable games I've ever had. The controls are smooth and familiar to any fan of Survival Horror, and introduce some almost Metal Gear Solid-esque elements to the playing field. Dodging, shooting, and moving about are a joy to experience because of the lack of sluggishness that seems to plague even the most highly-regarded of the survival horror genre - remember how frustrating the speed of characters was in the Fatal Frame and earlier Resi games was? All gone!
The learning curve is a little steeper than normal, perhaps, but in a game of this nature, where the storyline is all about being flung into unreasonable situations with a sense of no-way-out, this actually helps things along.
LASTIBILITY: This is, as with all survival horror games, not a terribly long trip. Don't misunderstand, it's 15+ hours on the first play through, but because it's such an amazing experience, you want more. Capcom (I love you!) has tried to alleviate this with some all-new PS2 extra bells and whistles, plus an all-new side-quest starring... ...someone :-), so it's not too disappointing when the credits roll for the first time.
But trust me, this is a game you'll come back to for both the storyline and the blissful playing experience again and again.
OVERALL: A mighty game; if this is where the Survival Horror genre is going then sign me up for life. That all Software Houses would put such a creative effort into their releases! Resident Evil 4 is deserving of all the praise it gets, and we should feel very thankful that Capcom is around to draw that praise out of us.
It's not so much scary as it is jumpy, like an action game with some beautifully-directed moments of tension and fear, and it is so, so much fun to play.
Recommended for immediate purchase!
a lot of potential... and a lot of frustration.

resident evil 4, what a weird game. i had to try it again after my first disappointment because it's rated so highly. the second time, i figured this game out. i was expecting it to act more like a FPS, when in reality it's a survival horror game. fair enough. that means instead of crouching, proning, jumping, sprinting... you'll be standing totally still and shooting a bunch of zombies at close range. it's a different kind of game, and it is quite enjoyable.. until you take the negatives of RE4 into account. the movement of your character is just so frustrating. he moves very SLOW. to turn around, you have to use up on the analog stick + a button. that's not intuitive or fun. the instinct is to RUN when a zombie throws a stick of dynamite at you. but you shouldn't run, because you're too SLOW. ironic considering our "hero" can run and jump out of second story buildings without a scratch. again, i don't expect this to be a FPS game. as a survival horror game, it gets a lot right. the shooting is done very well, but here's where we get to an even bigger flaw then the frustrating/clumsy controls.. NO AMMO. huh? you mean this is a shooting game where you end up using a freaking KNIFE and he can't even move while he's swinging this knife? you got it! our "hero" has to get up really close to the evil zombies and swing his knife while standing still. personally, i just don't find that very fun. i think the guns are a lot more fun to use.
so this is what happened to me - i was playing through this game like a normal gamer would, by using all my handgun and shotgun ammo up. since you can only find ammo in barrels and boxes, it's very scarce even after you explore all the areas. that's right folks - YOU CAN'T BUY AMMO. you can buy guns, first aid.. hell you can even upgrade your gun's firing power and reload speed with money, but you can't BUY AMMO?!?!?! what kind of a freakin' game is this?! you can't move with a knife in your hand and you can't buy ammo? umm, ok. anyway, this resulted in my INESCAPABLE death because i had to face a strong zombie with a chainsaw. the only way you can take this dude down is with a shotgun. i tried shooting him with my meager handgun ammo.. he lived. so then i had to use the knife.. but that means he quickly sawed my head off with his chainsaw. game over. to beat this jerk, i'd have to start the game ALL OVER and start killing zombies with the STUPID KNIFE to get anywhere. but wait.. how do you know when it's OK to use your handgun or shotgun? joke's on you, gamer, because - YOU DON'T! HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA!!! "here, let's give the player a bunch of cool weapons and let him spend his money on them, and then give him so little ammo, he doesn't even know when he can use his guns! whenever he decides he can use them, he'll run out of ammo and have to use his knife and he'll die! hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!" jerks. this game pisses me off.
Hmmmmm!

Pretty good extras! love the new weapons and added features this game has in comparsion from the gamecube version. But! wasn't much of an impact for me as it did from the gamecube version! the reason why is because all the new features and cutscenes in this one made the game seem like a spoiler and also made the game unorganized!! and also the lack of graphics upgrade :( , i would reccomend playing the original first! but if u don't have a gamecube then ignore me!! and buy it anyway! cause this game is still an awesome game.

To Previous owners of RE4-A few additional weapons and unlockable costumes are also new to this version, but it's not necessarily worth getting a second copy of Resident Evil 4 just for this extra content, especially since none of it is available up front. Besides, while Resident Evil 4 looks incredible on the PS2, it doesn't look quite as good as on the GameCube, where it has richer colors, sharper-looking environments, and nicer lighting effects. Larger foes also look better on the GameCube (while smaller foes melt away faster when killed), and the earlier version's loading times are also shorter. Pauses during the interactive cutscenes are also longer by an instant on the PS2, making the interactivity feel a bit less seamless. So, since the underlying gameplay is exactly the same, the slightly but noticeably better-looking GameCube original ultimately still has the edge. That about covers the differences how Resident Evil 4 compares between the PS2 and GameCube. -ign-
