As other people had already detailed the story, characters, gameplay, moves, extras and other goodies of this game, let me just give my personal account about the replay value of this game.

To cut to the chase: I played the game over and over again because once I have finished the normal difficulty, I have the option to play again with all my weapons, upgrades, and treasures carried over to the beginning of the second and any other succeeding rounds! For your game's enemies, IT'S PAYBACK TIME!

Here's what what I mean:

The first time I played it, I had white knuckles clutching on the controller, Leon and Ashley died many times at the hands of their enemies, and I suffered too much nervous excitement. (This game is such a blast!) The first round was very tough because you begin only with basic handgun and small carrying case. Seeing as I am no hardcore gamer, I (Leon, that is) have to sell to the merchant even incomplete treasures just to get by with minimum weapons upgrades to beat the tough boss fights.

So when I finished the first round, I eagerly played again because I have collected a formidable array of weapons and treasures which carried over to the beginning of the next round. And you can now buy one of the most powerful weapons from the merchant: the Chicago Typewritter Submachinegun which is only available after you cleared the game for the first time. While I was barely surviving from the attacks of all those parasite-infected Ganados before, I can now face them square-on and spray them in a hail of bullets from my upgraded weapons! This is one reason why I like playing it again. I now have time to dare enjoy the admirable detailed scenery that the developers meticulously put in the game because I can push back my enemies better using more powerful weapons.

When you finish the game once, you will unlock the following:

1. Professional difficulty
2. Assignment ADA
3. Separate Ways
4. Mercenaries
5. Movie clips
6. Cool new weapons

The difficult level is the same game but only harder (Leon died 75 times, hehehe) Once cleared, you will unlock the Plaga Removal Laser 412 weapon (PRL 412.) Oh, yeah!

I played the normal difficulty 3 rounds.
Assignment ADA 2 rounds.
Separate Ways 2 rounds.
Difficult level.. I am now on the 2nd round and I have the PRL 412 at my disposal!
Mercenaries... still playing it, as it is tough to get the top score for all characters in all the locations. I want to get the perfect score in order to get my hands on the Hand Cannon that will be unlocked.

There is something about the characters that make this game something to really cherish. I guess it's the story. Saving a beautiful damsel in distress (Ashley), playing the heroic rescuer (Leon), wondering about mysterious sexy woman in red dress (ADA), and defeating a host of evil enemies and creatures out to kill you.

But you know, even with all the upgraded weapons available in the succeeding rounds (which no doubt enhances the replay value) I believe that the game is simply excellent to begin with to make you want to play it again.

This is the only game I played in the PS2 where my wife and daughter stayed behind me and to cheer me on. They're too scared to play it but they really like watching Leon's rescue of Ashley from beginning to end.

What an excellent game!

This game is about as intense as action/adventure games get. Although it's survival horror, you'll only be scared by the intensity of the battles and wits of the enemies.
The traditional zombies are gone and have been replaced with psycho villagers and weird chanting cult members. The old camera view is gone so now you don't need to worry about running into walls for no good reason and has been replaced with a unique over the shoulder view. You also get assisted with a laser for your gun. You can shoot people anywhere on the body and that body part will be affected. Such as if you shoot someone in the leg, they will fall to their knees. Or if you shoot them in their face, they'll grab their face.
The graphics are top of the line for a system that's about to be last gen. The game cube version is only slightly better with faster load times. However the ps2 version makes up for that with the additional weapons and side missions.
Cut scenes in the game are interactive so if you think you'll get to sit back and enjoy the show, you're wrong. You'll need to press certain buttons at the right time to avoid being stabbed, shot, etc.
The series has been reinvented and hopefully will only get better; we'll have to wait for RE5 to see.

Pros:
-As intense as action/adventure games get.
-Amazing graphics
-unique game play and shooting style.
-decent length with added side missions
-different story although it's still a "rescue and get out in time" kind of game

Cons:
-Could have benefited with a one-button-quick-switch-weapon option.

This is the absolute best game in the Resident Evil series. The new gameplay makes the game ten times better than the others in the series. The third person behind the back camera angle was an extremely nice and much needed touch. Another thing that also makes the gameplay better is actually being able to see where the heck you are shooting. There is also a map feature now that tells you where the heck you are supposed to go. Not only that but the graphics are outstanding! The voice actors/actoresses are incredible as well. You play as the stong and noble Leon and after beating his quest you can play as the mysterious and sexy Ada Wong! The best thing though is the storyline! I'm not going to ruin anything for you so just play this game and enjoy.

I could be considered by veterans of the RE series to be a Noob because this is the first one of the series i have played extensively. I played RE 1 but it was just too depressing and its gameplay elements just didn't make up for that fact. I watched my friend play RE 2 but it also had the same flaw as the 1st one. This RE is the first one in the series that actually got my attention away from the Metal Gear Solid series for a while. i have the PS2 version and like the previous reviewer the Game Cube version is inferior in comparison to the PS2 version. The reason for my interest in this game is the fact that it had an awsome story which didn't take place in Raccoon City like so many other, no all of the other RE games made before it. It is really fun and you get enveloped into the story as soon as you start playing. It has the classic survival horror feel of course and has a few surprises that can surprise you and creep you out the first time around. The PS2's extras are a great addon and add more play time and reveal more of the underlying plot. Graphics are great but the controls are kinda weird like someone else said before. Like for instance if you want to run you have to hold down the circle button constantly. Also there is not as much camera freedom as you would like but once you start playing the game these small problems melt away and a truly great game appears, that is not to say it wasn't a great game in the first place...of course. A great buy, one of the best games out there today, trust me...or not. Oh and you won't need the strategy guide to beat it, it isn't that hard just really fun. If you do need a guide don't waste your money, get a free one on game spot.

Very few games can top resident Evil 4 overall. I've played God of War and the Prince of Persia games (which both rated high), but as far as I'm concerned, they can't even touch resident Evil 4. Unlike it's other 'Relative Evil's', Resident Evil 4 focuses much more on action and progression versus finding the key and backtracking. The enemies are quick and challenging and as Leon Kennedy or Ada Wong, you need SOCOM skills to pull off the kills. No annoying camera angels to contend with anymore either. When you aim, the behind the back view goes into over-the-shoulder, making much more sense in the long run. The atmosphere is extremely engaging, thanks to a great musical score and excellent graphical environments. It stands up well against it's brother, 'Silent Hill' in terms of atmosphere, where the other 'Evil's' soon became redundant. The game itself is HUGE. I kept thinking that soon I'd reach the end and that would be it, but no, the environments just kept expanding. Even when I did beat it, I got to play a whole new game as Ada Wong and than other game with Ada and even more the Mercenaries Game (which included good old HUNK from Resident Evil 2). So, as far as replay and game length, this game takes the cake for action games. As far as the graphics go, I was blown away by how smooth enemies move and how smart the AI is. No more of the boring zombies that simply lunge at you. Now, you're up against fast moving angry possessed folks with pitch-forks and chainsaws that chase you down and hunt you from all angles. It's great that you can actually use the environments to your advantage by pushing crates in front of doors to block enemies, etc. What's even better is when the enemies start hacking away at the door, trying even harder to kill you, versus waiting outside until you're ready for them. There's some standard puzzle-fare and a few 'find-the-key, go-back-and-unlock', but the action takes over and forces the game along at a perfect pace. the character acting is far better than any other game in the series and the story works well to draw away from the Umbrella storyline (which was getting tired anyways). All in all, this is the BEST Resident Evil Game and as far as I'm concerned, the BEST Playstation 2 game. If you don't own it (maybe because you hate the Resident Evil series or Survival Horror in general), buy it and try it. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Along With God Of War, Best PS2 Game!!!

Resident Evil 4 is a fanastic game, plain and simple. Everything is done right, from the variety of weapons, to the ridiculous graphics and spooky atmosphere, RE4 provides a truly great experience for any and every PS2 gamer.

The only problem with the game is that everytime you fire your weapon Leon stands still. In other words, he can't run and shoot at the same time. So what you have to do is run to a corner, turn around real quick, and start firing at people's heads. The game is just plain scary at certain points and will make you jump out of your seat and put the light on if you're playing at night. (which is the best time to play by the way)

Another thing that I love about this game is the diffculty level, which increases nicely from the start of the game to the end. This game also uses interactive cut scenes, which add some variety to an already addicting game. As you progress through the spooky town into the depths of hell, this game grabs you and never lets go.

What are you waiting for? Go get this game, you will not be dissapointed.

This Game Is Not For Everyone!

I was like you just a few weeks ago, reading the stirring reviews, seeing the critics rave about how AMAZING this game is, friends of mine talked about it, people telling me, GO GET IT!
So finnaly I did, I spent 30$ in the gamestore, brought it home, eagerly popped it into my ps2, hands trembling I could hardly wait to play it!

BUT ALAS!

The controls, so choppy! It's nearly impossible to fend of the attacks of just 2-3 monsters! Not to mention you run about as fast as a snail with polio.

The game looks impressive, beautiful graphics, intriguing story, creepy moments. But to me, the actual gameplay is just as important! I wasn't expecting it to be a devil may cry type battle system, but at least you should be able to MOVE while your aiming your gun!

Everything ELSE about this game is just as your friends are telling you, amazing, but if your like me, and the gameplay and controls are just as important, this may not be the game of choice.

Awesome game for game fans

I got this from game stop for a really good deal $16.99 used and it was like brand new. I first played it and it was so amazing the zombies were kind of difficult to beat in the middle of the game they had giant zombies which were very tough to beat and you would easily get massacred by them if you mess up once. Its kind of frustrating to beat in the middle of the game because you have to make sure you have the right kind of weapons when you first start playing the game but the more you play the more you learn. This is a must have for resident evil fans and worth the 20 dollars.

INCREDIBLE

I read many reviews that said that this is the way all of the Resident Evil games should've been. I didn't really know why they said this, but now that I actually had time to play the game, I understand why. However, I sort of disagree with their statement. The games, starting with the first one, were done incredibly well. I wouldn't change a thing from the originals. I think if all the games were like this, they'd get boring after a while. At least they kept the franchise fresh!! Now, this game is incredible. The graphics, the mood, the sounds, the music the gameplay, it's just great. I started playing the game at 9pm and actually didn't stop it until 2:00am!!! That's how much the game sucked me in. The whole time I played the game, I feel that I was being watched and that I was genuinely cautious for my character. Not too many games really suck you into the gameplay at that level, where you don't want to see anything happen to your character. I kinda like the fact that they are "somewhat" zombified. The communicate with each other, in a different language of course, but nevertheless, these zombies aren't the ones from all of the original games. The AI is much, much better.

I like the fact that you can buy/upgrade weapons. The only thing I think doesn't fair well, that you can't carry a whole lot of stuff to begin with, but you can always by and upgrade the attache case. I'm at a "Large" one now so it's cool.

The story is really good. The cinematics are theater-worthy. Really puts you in that mindset of danger everywhere. Everything is a mystery and as it begins to unfold little by little, it pulls you in even more.

Currently, I'm playing the game at "Normal" mode, I know there is a harder level, I just don't know if there's an "Easy" mode, which I should've tried first. I also wonder if I can "carry" over items when I play the game over again. I'll have to play and see.

It's still a great game. I highly recommend this game to everyone who wants a movie-like experience on their PS2. Play it in the dark with the sound turned up!!! Unfortunatley, I have kids, so I can't.
