since everyone else is saying what is good about this game i will say what is bad. alright what better place to start than the story. ok if umbrella is the main enemy in RE games how come they took them out and only mentioned them twice in this game and how did leon go from being outcast with the STARS he now is a federal agent assigned by the president to rescue his daughter, not a incredible story. now the enemies although the ganados are practically zombies that are faster with parasites in them i prefer the old zombies. though some of the bosses look really cool none of them were any challenge for me, i dont know why they were made like that but they were weak. oh yeah and the ending is terrible. remember all i am telling you is what i found wrong with game these things may not bother you but they bothered me so i am telling you about them

Have you ever wondered who rang the bell at the begining or what happened to Ada after she shot Cheif Mendez,The PlayStation version has the "Seperate Ways" version of the game where you get to play as Ada Wong AKA "The Bitch in The Red Dress". As her you must stay out the sight of leon while doing her own story line, because Wesker has ordered her to kill him if she sees him. As Ada, you gift to use those arows those one guys get in the castle. Once you have beat Resident Evil 4 in Professional mode, you can start a new game and use the PRL Lazer Hand Cannon. Also after you have beaten seperate ways, you can unlock the pimp suit for Leon and the Body of Armour for Ashly, with the armor ashly is too heavy to be kidnapped, and leon falls down when tring to catch her after juping from a ledge. The PlayStation2 Version has a flaw though; In the cut scenes they only show leons and ashlys default cloths, which is not important.

--GameCube

The GameCube Version has none of those other extra features just the ones that come on both, such as Missionaries where you gift to play as 5 characters and shoot people, much funner than it sounds, Adas report where you have to find samples of the Las Plaguas, as i said missionaries and adas report are on both versions ofthe game. The R.P.D. Costume for leon and the Slut costume for Ashly are on both versions of the game, the only difference is that it shows the costume their wearing instead of the default in the cut scenes.

NOT RECOMMENDED!!!

--PlayStation2 Version

This..This game its...its...THE BEST!!!OK heres what i have to say. This was the very first RE game i have ever played and the first game i have ever played on the PS2.I beat it like 3 months ago.I wouldve written a review before but i didnt have time.Over those past three months i started the series on the gamecube (i have to play it on my wii which is also a camecube).Started with REZero,And im now in the middle of the RE remake. Now back to RE4.Great plot.Great guns.Great enemys(even though its way different from the other games, same with the plot). And of course, good old Leon. You are Loen Scott Kennedy.Sent on a mission to a misterios place in Europe to find the presidents captured daughter,Ashely Graham. At the begining you think it will be easy. All you have to do is find the president daughter from some nice locals.Too Bad.It turns into a nightmare.Evil villagers have a mysterios and ancient monster in each of them known as the Las Plagas. You must fight through them, find Ashley, fight through more of them.Watch out.The Las Plagas people known as ganandos capture Ashley three times. So alot of the time your alone. When you do have Ashley heal her up with the power of green yellow and red herbs when she gets hit. Then at the island of evil you will
fight the head of the las plagas,Asmound Saddler, kill him,and drive of through the water to go home.

Richly Deserves Every Award it has been given

Don't listen to the person who gave this game only 4 stars. This game deserves all the praise it got because it is so well-made in all respects, even non-fans of the genre can get into it. When Capcom first started on the survival horror franchise, even by the standards of those earlier PS1 times the graphics were subpar, character animations cheezy, and by and large they did not really get their act together until Resident Evil 2 (which also stars Leon Kennedy incidentally). Funny how Leon is the main character in both groundbreaking RE games; number 2 being groundbreaking in that it not only fixed RE1's problems, but also generated a new number of fans, and number 4 which is, in all respects, "survival horror perfected."

It is very, very rare for a game to be so well-made even non-fans of the genre can get into it. I am not a survival horror fan myself. In fact, I hate that genre. With a passion. I hate how survival horror gives you an adrenaline rush from the fear (because they tend to be so immersive), and the subsequent loss of apetite afterwards. In that respect, despite the perfected gameplay mechanic, RE4 is by far much scarier than previous RE titles. In fact, a previous version of the game during production was so scary it never made it to the market. For hardcore survival horror fans, trust me on this, this version is scary enough. I will not give anything away, I'm just telling you, it is scary enough.

Graphics wise, it doesn't get any better than this on the PS2. Even God of War doesn't have graphics this good. The atmosphere is outright disturbing, relying more on ambience than wreckage for its effect. As far as gameplay, you use a third-person over-the-shoulder perspective when shooting enemies, complemented by the slickest reloading animations ever created so far. In fact, the revolver reloading animation is the most impressive of all. This perspective allows for better aiming than previous RE titles, although people with extensive first-person-shooter experience will probably have all the edge as newcomers to this series. If you are not a crack shot in video games requiring manual aiming, do not go near this game. If you are one of those people who can repeatedly win at FPS tournaments by shooting your digital opponents betweent their eyes, then, this game will be a good challenge for you. You will be challenged to place yourself strategically for the maximum number of kills, and since you need to conserve ammo regardless of the fact that it is more plentiful than in other RE titles, you will need to be accurate to the point of figuring out how many bullets will down an enemy depending on the weapon you have equiped.

If you have little to no FPS experience, you will panic, empty your ammunition, and be repeatedly frustrated because many of the bosses require at least decent marksmanship. If you're worried this game will not last very long, consider this; many editors at IGN.com do not want to part with their Game Cube copy and yet, inexplicably, they still picked up the PS2 version and have become addicted to IT. Regarding how much time this game will last you, do I need to say more? Game reviewers are very cynical these days, and very hard to impress. That many editors in gaming review sites still hold on to their copies a full year after it has come out says a lot for the game's depth. Plotwise, Capcom has actually managed to give the plot depth that goes well-beyond the RE series' horror B-movie roots. The voice acting is comparable to that of A-list Hollywood action movie productions, but of course being a 20 hour video game it accomplishes a lot more.

As far as sound, at first the game is not very scary at all. Once you get past the initial levels though and REALLY get into it, the ambient music eventually begins to get on your nerves. Most disturbing of all where the echo and footstep effects. If you have a good TV, you can actually determine the distance and position of your enemies just on sound. Yes, the sound effects are that good.

Overall, the game is fun. It has a few hiccups here and there, such as Leon's inability to strafe (which will probably be fixed in RE5), cheap, sudden attacks that give you no time to aim in some places, and Ashley's (the president's daughter) inexplicably passive demeanor as enemies pick her up to capture her. No college age girl in her right mind would allow ANYONE to just pick her up and grab her without some bitting and clawing (which Ashley does not do). For you female gamers out there, you will HATE Ashley Graham with a passion. Good thing Ada Wong has a strong presence here; she can hold her own in a gunfight as well as Leon, and she is not nearly as insipidly weak as Ashley.

Despite it all though, this game is fun. Even if you are not into survival horror, this game is a must play. Again, I must warn that this game is not for people who are bad video game marksmen. You need at least decent gaming shooting skills to make it through this game. The higher your skill, the less traumatic the game's scarier moments will be. Now, I am not into survival horror myself, and when I saw a friend playing Fatal Frame (I did not play myself) I had nightmares. If I could make it through and enjoy it, chances are, so can you. As far as video game marksmanship, I can get to level 14 in Secret Weapons Over Normandy on the PC version. Let that give you an idea of how skilled you need to be with a virtual gun to beat RE4. Nevertheless, I strongly reccomend it; it is worth every penny, it deserves all the awards, all the hype, and will probably become a model to future survival horror games. In fact, RE4 may very well be the first survival horror game of its kind, much in the same way Metal Gear Solid was the first of its kind way back in 1998. This game may very well make history despite its hiccups.

So, go ahead and order it. I promise you will not regret it; this game will not give you "buyer's guilt" like other video game titles. If anything, at the end you will find yourself wishing you had actually paid more. Yes, it is that good, and this is coming from someone who actively AVOIDED playing survival horror games since 1996, since way back when I was in High School.

Don't think about it; buy it, play it, enjoy it. The only two warnings I give are these;

1) Do not play at midnight
2) Do not play if you have an important business presentation at work the next day, or an important paper for a class. This game is EXTREMELY addictive and it doesn't let up, clear to the end.

Aside from that though, enjoy!

Vastly overrated, I wish actual good games got this kind of recognition

It's true, this game has over-shadowed every ACTUAL good game for the past 3 years. This game may very well have the most cliche'd storyline ever conceived for a game. And not to mention the dozens, upon dozens of stereotypes. And as far as realism, this game has none. Feel free to look at some of the outrageous stunts on Youtube, or Google. I really don't see what all the hype is for.

Too bad Capcom threw away all credibility they used to have. And didn't Shinji himself say that if this game appears on anything other than the Gamecube he'd cut his own head off? Shows how much intergrity they have left. Gone are the days of quality games, and in are the days of "chasing the all mighty dollar" Capcom has "soldout" and from the looks of things, every future title will be a carbon-copy of RE4. Too bad.

I gave the game the benefit of the doubt, and gave it a a four star rating, just so the RE4 fanboys wouldn't harrass me with their nonsencial mumbo jumbo.

Buy Metal Gear Solid 3 instead, unlike this, it isn't vastly overrated, it's quite the opposite, actually. If you INSIST on buying this, just be sure to turn your brain off while playing it.

There is so much I have to say about this game that the characters I am limmited to typing in this review cannot justify what this game really is, so I'll leave it short and simple. Resident Evil 4 is the absolute best game ever made where you can shoot a gun.

Best Resident Evil Yet!!!!!!!

I am a huge fan of the Resident Evil games,When this game first came out for the game cube I went out and bought one just for that game. This game blows all of the other RE games out of the water because it is not the usual RE where the are mindless zombies that bite at you. This game takes place six years after RE2 and this game features Leon Kenndy from the second game and he now works for the U.S president and he is sent to Europe to rescue his daughter Ashly and the game starts right out with action. This game is differnt because in the movies you have to push like X and Square or L1 and L2 to doge a attack. Over all I was very impressed with this game because I did not think that the PS2 could hold these kind of graphics. So if you are an RE fan definetly get this game. I hope that capcom does even better on RE5 for the PS3!

First things first, anyone who said anything about the Gamecube version being better without explaining this game is a horrible reviewer. You're supposed to rate how good THIS game is, not rate how much another version is to this one. Also, all you idiots who said "it was originally for the gamecube! WAHHHH!!", you're wrong, it was going to be for the PS2, but got moved over to the gamecube, THEN was moved to the PS2. And duh! of course the graphics are going to be better on the gamecube, you can't get better graphics on a system thats not as powerful when you use all of its strength! Additionally, the reviewer who complained about the extras not being available from the start, what were you thinking!?!? Are secrets supposed to be at the start of a game? How did you get the extras in the gamecube version? Huh? HUH!?! Right, I thought so...

Now then, lets get on with the review. WARNING: Spoilers in first paragraph!

Resident Evil 4 starts out with Leon Kennedy, who is on a mission to rescue the Presidents daughter from a religious cult, just discovered in Spain. After going through the village you start at, you end up at a church. In the church, is Ashley, the Presidents daughter. After finding her you must protect her from Ganados (villagers, zealots, commandos) and other enemies while traveling through a huge castle stage, and ultimately an island, which at the end you try to escape from.

Yes, I'll admit it, the character models, textures, lighting, and load times are better and less edgy on the gamecube version, but the PS2 version is still excellent, this is as good as it gets on the PS2. Facial expressions, although not like Half-Life 2, are among the best looking.
One problem I had with gameplay was that whoever you control turns slowly and that there is no way to speed it up. Not that its that bad, but if youve played first-person shooters before youre not used to turning this slow and just want to turn faster. Aiming can get a bit tricky at long range without a sniper rifle, since whenever you aim your persons hand keeps shaking, not like there having an epileptic seizure, but enough to make you frustrated a little when you miss a target repeatedly. Another problem I had was that when you kill someone next to a door and they drop an item you don't want, you have to pick it up, discard it, then open the door. This is even more problematic when youre trying to run away from people chasing you and/or when your attache case is full and you can't get rid of the item because you can't pick it up. The last, and I mean last and only other problem I have with this section is how to select you're weapons. You have to press start, highlight the gun you want, then equip it. Capcom easily could've made a weapon cycle button with L2 or the D-pad if wanted.
When Ashley is with you, you can issue the simple commands "wait", "follow", and "hide"(when available) by pressing the R2 button. One obvious pro in this game over the other Resident Evil's is the addition of the Merchant. You buy treasure maps, weapons, weapon accessories, weapon upgrades, and, near the end, an armored vest. You get the money from fallen enemies and from selling treasures, guns, gun accessories, ammo, and healing items. The only fault with the merchant is the inability to buy ammo, even though some are surrounded by shelf after shelf of ammo. Other than that, no problem, and for that matter, all problems listed before are the only problems in the game.
The sound is incredible. Whenever you listen to it, it seems perfect for the environment and what is going on. So is the voice acting. Whenever they say something with an 'o' or an 'e' or any letter for that matter, the way they move their mouths makes it actually look like their saying it the way we would, they're not just moving their mouths like in old oriental movies.
Also, the extras. After completing the game, you get a 10-20 min. minigame called Assignment Ada and a 3-5 hour scenario titled Seperate ways, where you play as Ada instead of Leon throughout the main game. Another, arcade-ish game called Mercenaries is included. In this you kill as many people as possible before the time runs out. If you get a good enough score (30,000), depending on the level, you can play as Ada, Krauser(!), HUNK(!!), or Albert Wesker(!!!). If you score 60,000 or more with all characters on all levels, you can recieve a free Handcannon (.50 caliber magnum revolver), which is crap at first, but if uprgraded fully with the exclusive, it will fire infinite bullets and be the 3rd most powerful weapon in the game (behind the PRL 412 laser cannon and Infinite/Special/regular rocket launcher). Speaking of that, after beating the unlocked professional difficulty, you can recieve a free PRL 412 laser cannon, which kills any and every boss or enemy in its parasitic form in one hit, even on the professional difficulty. It has 2 forms of fire, a laser-light flash that blinds ganados without there parasite showing for about 20 seconds, and a fully charged beam that shoots through an infinite number of enemies. The flash also slighty damages regular ganados, but will kill parasites instantly. This means that Verdugo, Chief Mendez, Krauser, the U3 experiment, and even Saddler, will all die fom a single flash without having to reveal their weakspot! This won't work on Salazar as he is too far away to hurt him. You can't kill any Gigante's until their parasite reveals itself. However, the charged beam is as strong as a rocket round, and will either reveal anyones weakspot or kill them. Another bonus is the Matilda handgun, a VP-70 with a stock that has the ability to fire in a 3-round burst. The Infinite Launcher, obviously, is a rocket launcher you can fire over and over and over as you please. The Chicago Typewriter is a machine gun that has infinite ammo and shoots very fast. Its power is also higher than most guns.
The extra costumes consist of Leons original Raccoon City Police Department uniform from RE2, Ashleys revealing pop sensation clothes, and Ada's black uniform from Assignment Ada. The 2nd set is Leons mafia outfit(which changes the Chicago Typewriter into a Tommy Gun) and Ashleys armor suit, which is everything-proof. She can't get shot, cut, blown up, or decapitated by anything. And, due to the weight of her suit, she can't be carried away, so when Leon catches her from a ledge, you can see him hold his back in pain as he gets back up.
All of this can be selected from starting a new game from your load screen, in which, the save says 'new round'. All of the little things make this this game so fun to play.

Finally we're all done!

All in all, Resident Evil 4 is an amazing game, and can not be missed. If you own a PS2 and don't buy this game, shame on you!! 5/5
