Disney and Square Team Up For A Great Game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 2
Date: November 02, 2005
Author: Amazon User

Square Electronics is known for making some of the greatest RPGs in history, including the Final Fantasy series, Chrono Trigger, the Mana series, and coproducing Super Mario RPG with Nintendo. Disney Interactive on the other hand is known for making games based on their movies and characters. Based on the very different backgrounds the two companies are coming from, I'm willing to bet that no one would ever think that they would come together to make a game. Turns out it was a match made in heaven.
Kingdom Hearts probably wasn't an easy sell; most of the games that Square makes are geared towards players who are at least 12, an age at which kids tend to lose interest in Disney's animated movies. Yet here was a game with the difficulty levels of most Square games starring characters such as Donald Duck, Goofy, Peter Pan, Pinnochio, Alice, and Tarzan. As it turns out, this is a great game. While it isn't a normal RPG, seeing as how there is no turn-based combat system, it lives up to Square's legacy as a maker of great games. And despite the large cast of "cute" Disney characters, the story is actually very intelligent and engaging. One other very interesting thing regarding characters is the inclusion of former Final Fantasy characters such as Squall (voiced excellently by David Boreanaz), Cloud, Tidus, and Aeris.
The story follows a young boy named Sora (voiced by Haley Joel Osment), whose clothing looks a lot like that of a certain cartoon mouse. Sora and his friends Riku and Kairi live on an island that they have always dreamed of leaving someday to visit other worlds. When a freak storm brings a bunch of monsters known as the Heartless to the island, the trio is seperated, and Sora winds up in a strange place where he meets Donald Duck and Goofy. They are high-ranking officials in the court of King Mickey, and have been instructed to find the owner of a special key, which turns out to be Sora. He is the Keyblade master, and only he has the power to close the keyholes on various worlds that are currently open and causing the Heartless to invade the various worlds.
The trio travels to different worlds, such as Wonderland, Neverland, Halloweentown, Agrabah, Greece, and Atlantica, in order to help various people from the Disney universe. What they don't know is that a group of Disney villains (such as Maleficent, Jafar, Ursula, Captain Hook, and Hades) is kidnapping princesses to serve an unknown purpose. In most worlds, a Disney character from that world joins your team to help you out. Allies include Aladdin, Beast, Peter Pan, and Jack Skellington.
While the first part of the game is a little slow, things really start to pick up once you start visiting other worlds (although having Wonderland as the first world may have been a mistake, seeing as how it is pretty much a huge puzzle). The game is definitely very challenging, which will keep even the best gamers trying to figure out certain bosses weaknesses. The graphics are beautiful, the voice-work is actually pretty good. A lot of the voice actors who played the characters in the movies came back for the game such as James Woods, Jim Cummings, Brian Blessed, Robby Benson, and Jodi Benson. Other voices are provided by Billy Zane, Mandy Moore, and Dan Castellenata.
While this game does have a lot going for it, it does have a few minor problems. The camera takes a LONG time to get used to. I was more than 3/4 into the game before I was able to actually master the camera system. There were a few other minor grievances, but this is definitely the most blatant.
Overall, this is an engrossing game that will have most gamers enthralled.

This is a Great Game

The reason I bought the PS2 console was so I could play this game. So far it didn't disapoint me. The game is fun, the graphics are superb, the characters are really cool. I think that it is a good competitor for Legend of Zelda, let's hope that Disney and Square produce a new Kingdom Hearts soon.

I was excited when this game was initially announced. It's an innovative idea to mix Final Fantasy and Disney characters/worlds. This game definitely has a Final Fantasy feel to it and the graphics are completely beautiful, no doubt. The FF cameos and interactions are nothing short of great. Seeing and interacting with Squall after a couple hours in, I knew I was hooked.

The Disney cameos are a little cheesy, but very fun in the same respect. Makes me feel like a kid again which is a very good thing. In the context of this game it works well I think, because it's a different kind of Disney feel. For example, the Disney movies were all separate entities, but in Kingdom Hearts they all meld together as one.

The gripes I have with this game are in the battle system and I feel it is flawed. First off, I don't like not controlling all 3 of the party members. Maybe that's because it is all real time and not turn-based battles. In that, I don't feel I have as much control as I'd like. The second gripe is with using other functions during battles, like using potions, ethers, etc. In this, you wind up taking your eyes off the action, scroll through the menu and use items. But who knows, since your eyes are off the action, you may be attacked before you could use it. HOWEVER, there are some battles that I've found completely enjoyable. For example, if you are one on one against another great swordsman it is very fun parrying and dodging their attacks, then unleashing some of you own. HOWEVER PART 2: The flaws I mentioned in the battle system are not enough for me to discourage anyone from buying this game. Trust me, it's a great game and lots of fun.

Similar games I'd recommend:
Zelda: Ocarina of Time... VERY similar feel to KH. :)

Unbelievable

This is byfar the second best game I've ever played(coming just shy of Chrono Trigger). The graphics, the immense storyline, the final fantasy-disney mix, all fit together so perfectly. This game is a must buy for all rpg lovers. If you are an anti-disney person, then don't worry. Its fun , besides, your killing disney characters anyways. In this game, I laughed, I had times where a tear ran down my cheek. There were times that the gameplay was very challenging. The mix of all these different aspects in one game is unthinkable, near impossible. But somehow, square and disney - together - pulled it off. The only bad things I can find are the camera angles(which you can fix by pressing L2 or R2) and you can't skip through cutscenes, even if you've already seen them. But straight out, I would give this game a 5 1/2 star rating if I could. I hope you really enjoy this game, and tell all of your friends about it, because this deserves to be the top-rated game of 2002!

We just bought our PS2, and my husband is much more wise to the ways of video games than I. However, I selected this to be "my" game, and we are both having a blast! It is interesting and fun, and the graphics are totally unreal. Plus, the Disney characters and backgrounds really add something nice for a Disney fan from way back like myself.

So I guess I can only speak to the novice player . . . this game is fun, not TOO hard but challenging enough to keep you coming back. It is very cool to watch, play, etc.! One special note to the novice like myself: they have a nice extensive non-threatenting training period, where you have mock fights and have to find objects on your "home island." This is GREAT practice for someone just getting used to a video game console!

Have fun!

This game is awesome!!! It's challenging for adults, yet easy enough for kids to enjoy too. Don't let the name Disney throw you off either. True it used Disney locations and characters, but the mix of Final Fantasy characters blend wonderfully into an engrossing storyline. The gameplay itself is quite easy and the graphics are phenominal. I can't wait for part 2 next year. It's gonna kick some serious butt.

Bizarre, but brilliant.

When I first heard the concept for Kingdom Hearts, I have to admit I was skeptical. A Square-Enix action RPG mixed with the Disney universe? I wasn't sure the gaming giant could pull it off, to be perfectly honest. I'm happy to say that my doubts were misplaced, and this game is spectacular. Boasting a deep storyline, great atmosphere, and spot-on voice acting, this game hits the mark on virtually every level. The only reason I gave this game a 4 in fun is the inclusion of some unnecessarily frustrating parts, mainly in the platforming portion of the game. These few moments are easily overlooked, however, and don't put much of a dent in this game's armor.

Wow!

I'm amazed! considering this is a disney game, it's a helluvahlot of fun! most of it is just running around killing things, but not entirely, and it's not like most games don't involve mostly just killing things. The graphics are awsome, the movies are constant, but generally good, and altho the muusic is repetative, the overall game is irrisistably addictive. However, I found it virtually impossible to play without the guide.

Looks good

OK, I havn't played the game, and I don't have a PS2, but if I did, this would be the first game I buy. The graphics look amazing, and the idea behind is is original. What really draws me in is the apearance of Final Fantasy characters, a series which I love. The Disney touch just sort of added to my interest. All in all, this is a very cool game from what I've seen, and will get is when I have a PS2.

Nice idea, but...

I really wanted to like this game. Really. I mean, how can you go wrong with Final Fantasy characters and Disney characters?

They went wrong.

The main thing that drove me up the wall and made me take my copy back to the store was gods-awful camera. Ya know, the one that constantly points in the opposite direction of the way you're facing? The one that stays up on the top level while you're down on the bottom level? The one that doesn't follow you around corners for hours at a time? Yeah, that camera. Battle system wasn't good, either.
