Salutations all!! Well I've read the review and I must say, you guys are unappreciative of the work put into GT4 by Polyphony Digital. After Gran Turismo 3, which in my opinion is still the greatest racing game of all time, it is quite hard to improve upon something great. First off, if it aint broke, don't fix it, and second, if they try to do too much they can lose the more lovable aspects of the game that people have grown accustomed to and have over-looked in the past. The only complaint about the Gran Turismo series has been the absence of visible car damage. Ok, say they were to add it... they'd have to take away a tremendous amount of car physics in order to accomodate car damage (this is seen in games like The Gataway and yes, Need for Speed; great games but they can't touch Gran Turismo's realizm) which is what the focus of this "Driving Simulator" is. Also, you guys thought that they delayed it long now? Imagine if there WAS online. Besides, only the games sold in Japan primarily used online because it wasn't as available and/or popular here in the states. HeHeH, I'd smoke everyone online anyways!! In closing, my advice to you is to enjoy the hundreds of cars, races, and other little trinckets I'm sure Polyphony will deliver!!

This is the greatest game of all time, let alone car game. It is the only truely realistic car simulator made, and it is indeed very realistic. I have driven several of the cars from the game and they are exactly the same in real life as in the game. If you don't love this game you are a complete idiot.
I may actually buy PS2

OK, here's the deal: NEVER compare NFS: Undegraound and GT series...the reasons? Well, one of them is cant get the rear wheels to spin out even with a RWD car and traction controll off in NFS. GT is a different story. I remember that I played GT2 for 6 months every day I had to try every single car in the game... (and I had to sell my PS one). NFS was great, but there was something missing- any hint of realism and aboiut 200 cars. And I don't really like rice cars. GT4 has to offer far more than any other game on any other platform. It is going to be a huge hit. With or without online play.
There is only one next step. Buying an actual car and trying to race it.
What are people thinking?

I don't get why all the great reviews of a game. I have played Xbox mostly and heard of all the great reviews of this game so I borrowed a PS2 and have been playing this game for a few weeks. What's the big deal again? Why is this game rated so well? Come on people my old computer game Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed had better graphics, better physics and all around better scenery than this. I don't really get why this game is so well loved, for one I can't even tell how fast I am going. I find myself constantly looking at the speedometer in disbelief because it never really appears like I am going over 100 mph. This could be an issue where realism needs to be speed up so people can feel like they are going fast. Yes I am suggesting maybe making it appear faster than it really would only so people can get a real sense of speed. The other gripe I have is that if you don't take a corner exactly in the same gear they show and the exact line you're screwed. There is no way to e brake and drift around a corner, you can't slam the brakes hit the gas and turn causing a perfect drift. These are possibilities that I can do and do much too often with my personal car all the time (I have gone through four sets of tires to prove this too). Yes I would agree that maybe you can only take a corner in one gear but come on people if this is a real driving simulator can you at least code more possibilities (like drifting that works).
Even if the game was great in those other areas there are other problems I see with the game. From what I have played the game is major repetitive, and very twitchy. I have a Toyota in my collection with a supercharger, the best shocks and a wing to keep the car force down and can't even touch the steering when going over 100 mph without causing the car to sway wildly around the track. Now really come on people I have gone way over 100 mph around corners in real life shame on you for thinking a car would start to sway around like that. One thing that is not coded into the game for sure is that speed causes the force on a car to actually be lower thus causing the swaying to be far less when moving at speed. This is something that seems to work the opposite in the game, the faster you are going the less you can actually correct the line you are driving on. This might be okay with the steering wheel but lets face it not everyone has that device.
Want my quick advice, rent the game play it for a while and return it. If you like it buy it and one day you too might be able to get past the repetitive tracks and afford an actual cool car in the game. Or you could just buy a better game like:
Rallisport Challenge 2 (this game all out rocks.)
Porsche Unleashed
But any of these games will be less repetitive have better graphics and be much more fun to play all around. Then again maybe we should just all wait for PS3 since it looks like this will be the next huge jump in platforms.
Before you rush out and buy it...

I'll risk scorching fanboy retribution to state the obvious. GT4 and GT3 are more or less the SAME EXACT GAME. This title will undoubtedly make it to the Greatest Hits shelf in a few months. Unless Grant is burning a hole through your wallet, just wait a bit. Everything will be a lot cheaper.
New: A few cars. A lot of tracks. B-Spec.
Missing: Vehicle damage.
Bad idea: B-Spec. I own three super cars after four hours of play thanks to B-Spec. That's over 1,000,000 credits. Woo hoo... yeah. I'm rich. What do I do now?
Other: The extremely annoying and nagging menu system still survives. Be prepared to spend sixty seconds in menu-land to do nearly anything. Don't get me wrong. The spinning icons look great. They move sloooooow.
I didn't notice the graphic tweaks. There's only so much NTSC/PAL can do. And GT3 was so close to the saturation point that GT4 doesn't seem to make much of an improvement to me. Maybe HD will lend a facelift to this version. I doubt it. But hey, if you have a HD television set, you probably won't miss $50.00 all that much.
Some problems.

This game is fun but it's more like a huge expansion pack. No worries there, it's a good ride. Lots of cars to choose from.
The problems:
- Developers seemed to have ignored the multiplayer option. Replays can only be shown on split screen. (Not a big deal if you don't care.)
- No driving aids available for 2 person battle on garage cars. Tire spin for an entire lap could be avoided.
- Terrible instructions.
- "Data corrupted" on memory caard after completeing %75 of game. Read online that this can happen.
It was fun, but I'm taking it back. I'll keep my GT3, though.
A Grand Disappointment

Nothing in the Gran Turismo line's history can prepare you for the utter disappointment you might feel after purchasing the fourth in the series. To be brief, the sound effects are awful; I haven't heard such pathetic "car sounds" since Commodore 64. The "cars" in this game (quote signs are on purpose) don't drive at all like real cars; most of them feel vaguely like front wheel drive cars. I say vaguely because it's more like they float over the surface instead of sit on wheels. Also, no matter how slow you go, the supposed wheels squeel at the slightest turn. I'll admit that the graphics of this game are pretty good (not fabulous as others might say), but honestly you could just buy a bunch of brochures at a car dealer and get the same experience as you would from this game. I've had it two weeks, and it's getting traded in (at a big loss) as soon as possible. Don't let the hype over the number of cars or tracks fool you into getting this game... I promise that if you've ever driven a decent racing game you'll dislike this.
Looking forward to Gran Turismo 5

I feel like writing a Gran Turismo 4 review.
I'll start out with probably the highest aspect of the game: the graphics. Everyone's said it before but they're very impressive although a little hard to look at while you're speeding by the landscape. It's very enjoyable to race on tracks that seem (as far as I can tell) as if they've been taken straight from pictures taken of the real-life tracks, which is what I assume they did. The car models are wonderful, and seem almost pre-rendered while you're driving. I think racing games are such that since the cars themselves don't move except in a rotational way, they're able to make them very visually realistic even in real-time driving.
The sound is very good. I don't know what a lot of engines sound like, as I'm not a race driver or car enthusiast really, but to me they sound authentic and again I assume they recorded these engines individually since they all sound unique, although one person mentioned that some of the engine sounds are off from real life. That may be, but they still sound authentic and are separate from each other. The music is mostly bad, unless you like what they've chosen for you. It's gotten repetitive enough that I now have it turned off, even though I generally like listening to it while racing. Also, the music seems to be using a fairly lossy compression that would be about equivalent to a 96Kb MP3, or maybe lower. To me that's something that they could've just ramped up a little bit, although it's obvious that they used as much of the DVD space as they could. The best song, even if you don't like Van Halen, is probably "Panama", because it's very appropriate and fits the mood well. Also, the soundtrack is all over the place, assumedly to please different people, and has rock, rap, r & b, classical, and techno, although in limited amounts. There are really about 10 songs for me that are listenable during the races (they let you choose). So it does add to the game, but they're should be a lot more songs and I just attribute that to the limited space they have to work with.
Then there are negatives as well. There's very little sense of depth-of-field in the game, which causes you to really not know when to brake, and screws up the race for any human competitor. It's even suggested in one of the license tests that you should look at certain marks or signs when you're driving to remember when to brake. I don't know if real race drivers do this, but this is very annoying to me and I don't do it; I just try to remember when I should brake according to how close the turn seems, and sometimes it's hard to tell. Of course, this is something you're playing on a TV screen and is going to be in 2 dimensions, but I feel there are ways to make it better, and it's largely a limitation of graphics. Someone mentioned the graphics are a lot clearer on higher definition screens, and indeed, the one problem with the graphics is that they look a little blurry, and this adds to the problem of depth and knowing when to turn. Besides that, the sense of speed seems fairly accurate, although not terribly fast, but it can be if you're in a really fast car on a kind of narrow road, etc., so it's pretty realistic in that sense I guess.
The 3rd person view seems almost useless to me, and the hood-of-the-car view seems kind of silly but maybe some enjoy it. The 3rd person view should be something a lot closer to arcade racing games I would think. The car looks so big that it's a little weird. Either way, to me the 1st person view is the best and gives the best sense of speed, but if the 3rd person view where more normal I might use that instead. People who enjoy sim-style driving would be really pleased with how the 1st person mode is, I would think.
Then the other main problem, which is fairly subjective, but I think something many people would note if they could express it, is that there is a cold sterility to the game which takes something away. I know it's meant to be a driving simulator, and I respect their goal of complete realism, but I don't think that precludes a sense of fun and human-ness in the game, and to me it's lacking that. I think they could figure out a way to add that element and still keep the goal of complete realism intact. And that goal is very well met, in my non-professional opinion, so for that they definitely get lots of credit.
The game is fun in it's own strange sort of way though, and the graphics and sound are great I think, and the whole driving-simulation aspect of it. The game is wonderful in its respect for real life cars, both classic and new and also obscure. If you can play this on a new television with a hopefully hi-def signal, but at least a clear picture, that's good. I wish there were more of a human element in it though. It stands mainly as a technical achievement, and definitely has its good driving moments, even though there are no crashes or damage modeling.
BTW, the helpfulness of the license tests is very questionable, to me at least, because the written instructions were somewhat random and inconsistent in my opinion, although maybe some found them helpful.
Fabulous game!!!

I am in my 50s now and recently discovered this game. Yes, it is a bit difficult at first, and the directions for how to play are not so good in the supplied booklet, but a little effort to find out how it all works will yield you big enjoyment rewards.
Way more fun than driving a real car, not to mention less dangerous, this game is a total hoot.
Some advice to beginners: buy a used car like the Honda S2000 as your first car. This model can be entered in more races in the Beginners cup races than most other cars, handles great and with a few upgrades is easy to win races with. Get to the Spider and Roadster races as soon as you can, because they pay better than any others in the Beginners area. As you go along, you will find that more races become unlocked in Arcade mode. In Arcade mode you can choose from a wide variety of tracks, cars, and level of difficulty without having to buy the very expensive cars, which can take a very long time in Gran Turismo mode. And don't be misled by those who say Arcade mode is not as good as Gran Turismo mode--rubbish, the driving physics are the same, and you can race a lot of great cars right from the start. I think Arcade mode is better, unless you really enjoy spending endless hours tuning cars and earning credits to drive the fabulous race cars already available in Arcade.
As you become a better driver, the game just gets more and more fun to play. If you can, get a Driving Force Pro wheel and a Virtual Racing Cockpit (a great one is sold online by Bob Earl, a former real race driver--just google his name) to multiply the fun factor by a lot!!
Don't miss out on this one. The best video game ever made IMHOP.
Great game, Do NOT be fooled!!

First of i would like to say that this is a tough game not super hard but hard at some points. i am about 30% complete in about a week and a half. The first thing that you need to do if you can is to get the 2 licenses from GT3 and 100,000 credits if you can. That is what i did. this way you can spend all that money on one car and let that car carry you on to more money and more cars. This game is amazing when accounting for the HUGE selection of cars. I would highly recomend this game to anyone. To me this is no doubt the best racing game for the PS2.
