When I bought this game in February 2004, I had no idea I would become so addicted to it over the next few months. That is the only true problem with this game: Time consumption
If you want to get the full experience out of leveling characters past level 30 and ranks past 3, hours upon hours must be put into it. That being said, this game is not for the casual gamer that only spends an hour or two at a time playing.
Finding parties (groups that help you to level after you cannot fight alone anymore) takes anywhere from 3 minutes to 2 hours, and then many different fights must be performed to gain the required experience points.
If you want a fun game in which you can talk with new friends, kick the crap out of baddies, and enjoy the awesome graphical layout (but don't mind spending hours of your time), then this game deserves a try. If not, there is always the new release of Guildwars, which is an MMORPG that supposedly gives the same experience regardless of time put into it.
Good luck!

Imagine you're a character questing for fame or fortune. Or perhaps doing missions for a certain country. You better have a lot of time on your hands because Final Fantasy XI will take ages to beat.
Final Fantasy XI is a detailed, environmental world full of quests and adventure. The world of Final Fantasy XI is called Vana'diel. The characters in the game are Hume, Elvaan, Tarutaru, Mithra, and Galka. Next you pick your hair color of your character. Then you pick your job class; you can choose from a warrior, monk, white mage, black mage, or thief. After that, you can choose the name of your character. Then you choose what country to start out in. They are Bastok home the Humes and Galkas, San'd Oria home of the Elvaans, and Windurst home of the Tarutarus and Mithras.
The price of Final Fantasy XI is about forty dollars; the price goes down over time. You also have to pay monthly to play Final Fantasy XI. You will also have to pay more if you want more characters on the game.
The graphics for the game depends on your hard drive, if you're playing on a computer. You can change the graphics for the environment on low, normal, or smooth. You can change the computers resolution too. Final Fantasy XI can be played on either a Playstation 2, or a computer.
Final Fantasy can be played in a second person view, or first person view. If you're playing in second person view, you can rotate the camera all around you character. You can zoom in and zoom out in second person view. The camera is manual, which means you can move it yourself.
Sound is great for this game, especially the sound effects. You can change the sound options to stereo or mono. If you cast magic, the sound effects will be relative to real-life sounds. Like fire, the game's sound will have that blazing sound of fire. You can also change the volume of the game.
The game play is awesome. I think it's the best part of the game. You can do various things in the game. You can go fishing, create items (item synthesis), do some missions for your country, or you could go out and defeat monsters. Or perhaps you could buy or sell items at an auction house. The auction house is place where you buy or sell unwanted items. You could also chat with other people that are playing in Vana'diel
What would you do first? Do missions, kill monsters, or do quests and help other people, go fishing, or item synthesizing. Maybe you could do everything in Vana'diel. What would you do?

Ok, im not a kid, i just don't feel like logging in.
My one complaint about this game is that it takes so long to get started! It took me almost 3 hours to get playing after i took it out of the box, however, it was amazing once it got going
Final Fantasy XI could of been better

Final Fantasy XI is an ok game. It has very well done cut scences and has outstanding graphics. However it's interface is a little hard to get use to. I have been playing online games for a while now and I have found that if you are lost the best way is really to ask for help. The person you ask will stop and help you. Final Fantasy did a great job with the combat and the quest system. I would suggest anyone whos is willing to pay the online game should consider buying it.
I agree with "Don't listen to the other reviews"

The first 10 lvl's are difficult. Especially if you choose a Taru WHM as I did, but I stuck it out. Call it patience.
But the game in wonderful. Rich and full, with a great deal to do.
Negativity abounds in America, but this is the best of the MMORPG's, like it or not.

YES! This game is great! there are downsides, however. If you LOVED EverQuest, you will love this game. FFXI is WAY more time consuming, and camping is just as hardcore. If you don't have the GIL to buy things in this game (which is hard), you will NEED high level friends. Even to be able to travel efficiently. By efficiently, I mean you will sit on an AirShip for about 15 minutes real time. This sounds great? the people you will party with will be... not so good. They can and WILL be good, but good luck. If you are not in an active Link Shell, you will get NOWHERE at later levels. Its tough, but you CAN find people to get you past the roadblocks that make this game. If you have played this game, and think the sub-job quest was tough? Do NOT play this game. The quests get intense. Intensly hard! This game is very rewarding, but if you do not have the time or resources or energy? I would never play this game. This is a VERY time-intensive game. DO NOT play this as your first MORPG. Please play something else.
Sad, sad game......

Ok, if you've played Final Fantasy games before and you want to know what this one is like........
Load up any other Final Fantasy game. Call over 2 of your friends that also like FF games. Everyone picks a character to be "theirs." When a battle starts, you only get to control "your" character. When it's someone else's turn, give the controller to them.
"What if my friends can't come over and play?" you ask. Well then you can't play either.
"What if my friends are idiots and screw everything up?" you ask. Then everything is going to be screwed up.
"Even when everything is going well, this is only 1/3rd the fun of getting to play 3 characters." you say. Yes, you are correct.
And now you have figured it all out without paying $50(+whatever extras you might have bought). You're welcome.

its just, WOW, i mean this whole video game world is awesome its so large that you could get lost in it, and the character making part is the best.i mean this game has some of the best graphics i have ever seen. square enix has really outdone itself on this game. the only reason im giving this game 4 stars is not for the game itself but for the monthly fee. i mean come on. i love final fantasy since the very first one but i cant afford to spend 12.50 a month to play this game. i'm telling you that this game is worth the money but for the people who dont make 12.50 a month its a real hassle. im telling you though if you love final fantasy and can afford the monthly fee then buy this game its totally worth it.
Long time FF fan and Huge RPG fan.

This review should begin with saying that this game is very pleasant and has many positives. However, overall, this is not exactly what I think a game should be, and could be improved in many ways. I have played every Final Fantasy game ever released in America, and I beat every one. Also, I have played many RPG games in my life and a few online ones as well.
With that said, let me say this game holds very true to the general scheme of FF. You have to walk before you get Chocobos, and later you can ride airships. Also, all spells and potions in this game are the same as other FF games. The graphics are very nice and can be highly intensive or lowered for non-top-of-the-line machines. Also, people from all over the world play and there is a language translator so it can be neat to play with someone from Japan. (This also has many negatives which I will discuss later. That is about the extent of the positives for this game.
The Problems with FFXI:
----This game is painfully slow to do anything. Every step of the game requires some mission which can take many houres per mission to complete.
+ All missions cannot be undertaken until you are a certain level, which takes some time to level.
+ However, you must also obtain fame doing certain quests before you can do many missions. These quests are very boring and feel more like a chore than like you accomplish anything. You have to the same quest many times over to obtain any reasonable amount of fame.
+ Also, you must develop a "trade skill" like smithing to be able make any amount of money call gil. Buying the needed materials to level in your skill is ridiculous and takes weeks to truly level up.
----The PC's in FFXI are not near as friendly or as helpful as most online games. I believe this is due to the difficult nature and length of time it takes to do anything. People are so busy with their own characters, that they don't feel they have time to help. Also, if they wanted to show you how to do something, it takes over 1 hour of their time, because walking anywhere is very slow. Also, half the people online do not speak English so they cannot help because the translator does not work with regular speach. You have to choose which words to say from a list which is too small.
To summarize, you have to do so many things to be well accomplished in FFXI that it no longer feels like a game and only feels like a job. DO NOT THINK YOU CAN SIT AND PLAY FOR LESS THAN 2 HOURS AND ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING. This is a long slow game that requires tons of time to enjoy. I love all FF games, but this is no game, its a job. ALSO, DO NOT THINK YOU CAN MAKE IT FAR IN THIS GAME WITHOUT LOTS OF HELP FROM STRATEGY GUIDES. The NPCs do not give enough info on how to do the different missions, and the PCs are too busy to help you. People only talk when they are in a party and then it is only about what monster to draw in next.
