Would have gotten 5 stars but............

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 5 / 18

I am going to love this game (i played the demo) The reason I gave this game 4 stars is how they die, if you shoot them with your double Uzis they do almost a backflip. I hope this is corrected in the full release. Otherwise this game is truly amazing, you can even slow down time like in the matrix so you can dodge bullets otherwise called Shoot-Dodging.

Great Look.. Needs more story

It has a bold look to it but I thought the characters where not very interesting and had to force myself to finish the game.

A revolutionary game

This game is set to become as revolutionary as Halflife or Doom. The leap in graphics is stunning. My jaw dropped when I first loaded up the beta. You start talking to your best friend on the subway. When I looked out the subway window I could see fully rendered walls with bill boards and paint. But the real fun came when I go a handgun. Bullet and gore effects are more stunning and are more realistically portrayed than SOF or Rn 6.My only complaint at first was the way enimys died. They seem to tumble when shotin the arm. After a while though I got used to the strange non SOF death sequences. The weapons feel real.... really real. I only got four, handgun, shotgun, bar, and some type of rifle. New York city is quite simply photo realistic. After I crused through the museam of art, I also beheld the empire state building and battery Park. I was amazad also at the way you interact with the environment. everything moved and operated. I cant wait to buy the full game when it comes out and I feel sorry for everyone else who hasnt had the opportunity to play the exclusive demo! so long suckas.

Dissappointing and a little dull

Originally, I felt reluctant to compare Max Payne to Deus Ex, as the latter is such a superlative game as to make the comparison somewhat unfair. ... I offer this observation: Max Payne suffers greatly in comparison to Deus Ex, which is very much the better game.

In fact, I'm surprised at the predominance of very positive reviews for Max Payne. I offer here a brief list of the games primary shortcommings.

First of all, the interactivity of the game is virtually nonexistant. Whereas the environments in Deus Ex were absorbing and interesting environments to examine and explore, the environments in Max Payne are just backgrounds, offering little more than wrapping for a simple, fixed game path. See those boxes over there? That desk? Forget about them. There's nothing in them. Keep moving along and stop wasting time. (Actually sometimes a certain type of wooden crate will have an item in it. Yay.)

Where are the choices in Max Payne? The answer is that there simply are none. Deus Ex gives one so many choices that one gets lost playing with the game, seeing what is possible. Exploring the game becomes more important than the game itself. In Max Payne there might as well be a bright yellow line on the floor, because that's where you're going, like it or not.

Even within the limited scope of the game, play becomes quickly repetitive. One quickly catches on to how things will go down around this corner, and the next, and the next, and so on.

The A.I. sucks even more fun out of the game. The characters go from completely clueless to completely omniscient the moment you cross the boundary into their space. One second they are oblivious to your presence, but as soon as that hand grenade leaves your grasp, its "Hey it's Max Payne! Get him."

The software itself is fairly flakey, which gave a bad impression almost immediately. Installation became entirely about what *I* had to do to get the game to run correctly. I don't like jumping through hoops to get a $.. game to run. Even after I satisfied all the requirements, stopping the game from crashing on exit still requires a "workaround" involving turning of the voice modem.

I'll stop beating the dead horse and mention some positives now. There are several interesting things about the game, among which is the bullet time feature you have no doubt heard of. It's a great idea. (Back to negatives: it never feels like you're able to fully integrate it into your game play.) There are also some very interesting levels involving dream sequences, hullucinations and the like. The graphic novel aspect was also interesting. Finally, the graphics were very nice, and the slo-mo cut sequences at the end of the battles were pretty cool as well. (Although they added to the predictability of the game.)

Overall, the game did NOT live up to my expectations, but it was good enough to keep me punching in to see what the ending was like. (It was like the beginning and the middle.) In hindsight, I should have played Deus Ex a third time instead of buying Max Payne.

Somewhat disappointing, but OK

Max Payne was billed as being one of "those games that will change gaming." With this type of hype, I was eagar to buy this game. However, after playing it through, and trying a mod or two, I must say that this will not change gaming. Its an OK game. I'd still take Half-Life over this game.
I'll list the games pros and cons:

Pros:
Its graphics are undeniably nice.
Its new features: Bullet time and the diving shooting are very cool.
Nice mods bound to show up.

Cons
No multiplayer?! This was one of the games major problems.
Only a few save slots.
Bad plot.
Most of the maps are just average.
NO replay value. I uninstalled it (its a space consuming game) almost immediatly after beating it.

Overall, nothing industry bending, but a few (8-12) hours worth of moderate fun. Waiting until this game's price comes down, is my recommendation.

O.K.

Max Payne is O.K., but it has its flaws. Prime among these, is the obstructed viewpoint, common to all 3rd person shooters. Targeting the enemy can get frustrating when all you can see is the back of Max Payne. It should be noted that this does not happen all the time, however it does occur often, especially when in narrow passages, or on stairwells. The crosshairs are non-existent, merely a white pixal. This is problem because it tends to blend into the backround easily. In addition, Max Payne cannot lean left or right, forcing you to expose him when attacking the enemy. When you install the game, your forced to play the easiest level. This is a flaw because the game has little replay value.

The hype about Max Payne is the graphics, which take a back seat to no PC game. The audio/video options menu is the best I've seen. Detailed explanations are given for each option. The storyline is solid, and the artwork is a nice touch. The game has no bugs or glitches to worry about either.

Max Payne is a worthy time-killer, but its not a classic.

Max Payne is a third person game with a fantastic single player gameplay but no multiplayer gameplay. It has an average plot, ground breaking graphics and lots of comic book type animated cutsences. It supports two video modes "Direct3D Hardware T&L" and "Direct3D Software T&L". Set in New York City, Max Payne is a cop who goes undercover to seek revenge against the gangsters who killed his wife and daughter, His cover is blown and is framed for murder with cops and gangsters after him. The game ends with a great climax action which will do any hollywood movie proud. What's unrealistic is Max is a cop fighting against drugs but he uses pain killers to cure his injuries. I played on the Direct3D hardware T&L and the game runs very smooth. The graphics are fantastic, The charecters and world look real, Though not many different colours. The world detail is superb, You could turn on the tv, shoot it and watch it explode. The sound recording is very good and loud. The music which plays during the action sences is superb. Load times are very good, The quick saving and quick loading are very quick.

Max Payne's level design is superb, They are very well done, In one level you need to chase a gangster jumping from the cities roof top to roof top and finally jumping on a moving train. Mp is a short game but the length is just right. The selection of weapons are very good but some of them are very dissapointing, Grenades and molktov cocktail for example, It is quite hard to through grendes. Colt commando is my favorite. Max Paynes gameplay is pre half-life, But still the action gameplay is superb and very thrilling. The problems in the game are it is shipped without a multiplayer and initially it has only one difficulty, other three difficulties can be unlocked only if you finish the first, They are both very bad decisions. It has got loads of annoying cutsences, cutsence of the sniper bullet charging to the target is cool, but others are very annoying and take the controls from the player. It is also quite hard as max cant take much damage. Third person perspective is always a bad choice for action games like this, But its third person view is quite good but it does not support the turn left and turn right key for the keyboard, You could turn only with the mouse. Max Payne is not a ground breaking title in gameplay but it is a very good pre half-life kind of game with better graphics and bullet time. If you like pre half-life games (not many puzzles, shoot everything that moves, Bad AI) then you will really love Max Payne.

Best Game Ever...

This game is amazing. I just got it today, and I have not been able to stop for about 4 hours straight. You are a cop, your wife and child both were killed 3 years ago. Now, you are being framed for a murder. Could things get any worse? The gameplay is basically like Tomb Raider, except this is better. This game is a best buyer for hard-core gamer fans. The weapons are amazingly made, the enemies have great AI, the graphics are amazing, just everything is awosome. The game is for mature audiences, contains blood, gore, and some other mature scenes. Well, the only thing I really don't like is that you die to easily, but there is also strategy and sneaking. Well, buy this game! Thank you, and goodnight.

Comparisons to Half-Life are entirely appropriate. Think of Half-Life with cutting edge tech. Best looking game yet, a milestone. Great story, great fun. You can play for 12 hours and feel great; it is not like work. You don't need a walk-through, always seem to go the right way. I decribe it as flowing down a river, others say it is like riding on rails. Here's what it doesn't have: difficult jumps, rocket packs, swimming, floating, search for items, hard puzzles.Unfortunately, no multiplayer or online. This game is selling so strong, expect a big mod community. I think the game will have the longevity of Half-Life.

The game does not take much thought, and is easy, making it fun for the average gamer. I never got lost! There are 2 mazes, but directional audio gets you out quick. This game has a low frustration factor.

This is a third person shooter, but plays smooth, like first person. Nobody mentions or compains that it is third person, and this is saying a lot.

Great story, great graphics, great fun. Played all the way through with no serious bugs and did not patch.

This is the greatest game yet. Other great ones are coming. I have nothing negative to say. Others are critical of length of game. I got my money's worth. Maybe a year from now there will be similar graphics in a game that plays 40 hours. Max Payne is here now. I find replay value. Many parts play like an arcade game, and you can find different ways to slaughter. It is constant slaughter, though you can always stop in peace and view the wonderous textures.

Make sure you meet the systems specs. This is the most advanced game, graphically. Looks and plays great at 1024x768 at 32 bit with textures on high. I had trouble at 1280 res. My 3DMark 2001 is 2522. Some people appear to be playing at marks below 1000. I reviewed on 866 PIII, 128 meg ram, GeForce2 GTS 32 meg DDR. More than enough computer for this game, but a 256 stick might improve performance.

Great Game

Best game ever of its type. Great Graphics, Great Story, Great script.

Little on the short side, but leaves room for a good expansion set, or sequel.

Buy it now.
