Wow, you mean bullets actually kill people?

For once a realistic shooter, nevermind the fact that it's 3rd person. I get so sick and tired of games where you're packing three different rocket launchers, a horde of plasma weapons, and a nuclear handgun as a sidearm. I like realism, it's true. And the challenge that it takes to kill off a room full of grunts without getting your butt shot off.

And I really like the gritty feeling of the game. Even if it is a very linear shooter, it feels like it's not.

Anyway, it's a great game, and worth buying, but make sure you've got a fast computer (as in above a 450). Mine lags a lot (only a 400), but at least the reload time is quick. (for dying that is)

For all 007 and Syphon Filter Lovers!

I love this game. Yes there are many great games with action, adventure, great guns, great effects, and excellent graphics. But not all games have great matrix-type slow motion effects and lots of other graphic action moves. This is a great game for everyone who likes 007 and Syphon Filter type games. It is exciting and has fantastic moves and levels. This game is definitely one of the best modern games ever!

I haven't been such an avid gamer lately truth be told. I've been annoyed by most of the titles of the past 2 years, same thing over and over again right? Well here's Max Payne. Beautiful Graphics and strikingly realistic. The plot is very well layed out and entertaining. My greatest complaint is also a magnificent complement: too short ^sigh^. More, more, more, MORE! All in All, this is an incredible game. I found myself completely involed in this experience, the payne and all.

Those who complain about the difficulty...I laugh at you without remorse. Go stare at a stack of peanuts or something.

MyStats.

.Very, VERY good music. Great sound, ambience and effects. Also, Amazing voice acting.

.Great graphics. Very nicely detailed textures.

.Realistic. Convincing environments and experience. Asside the fact that some baddies require 10 blasts with your biggest gun to the head. Hey maybe they'll make a realism patch?

.Great story intelligently told in style.

.And most Importantly, Alot of Fun.

Outstanding!

Excellent Graphics and good story plot its the ultimate shoot em up! This game make other 1st person shooting games amatuerish by comparison.
The weaponry is realistic and I have to say that even the subway graphics and the look of the NYC storefronts is totally authentic. (I thought I was back in Flushing, Queens!)
The Joe Pesci criminal types are perfect. I haven't finished the game yet and I'm trying to savor the fun. Definitely worth the money...ENJOY!

THE BEST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED

This is BY FAR, the best game I have ever played. I love action games, I usually play games like Unreal Tournament or McGee's Alice or Sacrifice, but I tried out this game - IT BLEW ME AWAY. The graphics are divine. The story is very gripping and keeps you playing right along hour after hour. The slow motion bullets are AWESOME. This game makes you remember when you wished video games were cooler and more like real life. THIS one, is as close as you can get - for year 2001, that is. It is simply amazing and very very fun to play. You are just doing tons of things - there is never a time to be bored in this game. You open doors/drawers/cabinets/ even drive things!!!
WELL worth the money and time to play. You will love it.

Revenge is Sweet for Max Payne

I love FPS video games, I love action movies, and I'm from New York with an attitude. And that's why Max Payne ROCKS!

This is the only game that successfully integrates a great script with game playing since Half Life. When Max Payne finds his family killed in cold blood by corrupt government forces he goes ballistic. With his [bad] attitude he aggressively goes after those corrupt underworld
... who took away his humanity. Unlike other games this is not senseless shooting - its justified shooting. Blowing up the bad guys is the only thing left that Max enjoys.

The dark dismal snowy scenery throughout the game adds beautifully to the hellish situation Max is in. And there is two main things in the game that adds mucho points to the tilt factor: bullet time, and the scenes when Max is drugged up. You probably read about the Matrixlike bullet time so I won't describe it more than that. I loved using the sniper rifle. It switches to bullet prospective on the last shot - very cool. And when Max is drugged up in two of the game scenes its gets pretty intense. The dark distorted environment, with long fishbowl like hallways adds quite a lot Max's nightmare.

For playability its awesome. I have not gotten frustrated because I'm stuck and don't know where to go. The games moves at a perfect pace.

The only complaint is that the game does get a bit repetitive. He's going through buildings most of the time. Perhaps if there is a sequel the game the designers can use real New York City scenery: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park, Empire State Building, Chinatown, Times Square, etc.

So buy the game .. you'll enjoy

Wow!

This is an amazing game, really. I'll tell you the full story and options you have in this game.
Three years ago his wife and baby girl died, because of some men that broke into the house. Max Payne has killed them, though he wants revenge for this happening. Finally, three years later, he gets a lead on the case. He follows this lead with bosses and a lot of guys to shoot ahead, using bullet time that is like Matrix-Style Slow-Motion that is easier to use then the fast-paced real life that happens all round him. He firsts gets a case in the subway, he finds out that his partner is died, and the big guy blamed it on him and so here on out, cops are on his tail. Well, though here to the lasts missions he is just trying to get though the bosses that lie ahead, each boss defeated getting him one step farther. There are over 25 levels, each long and painful to Max Payne, but that's what happens when you're trying to beat the case of V. I should tell you that there is two "wacky levels" that is kind of confusing, there called, "Prologues" which the first time, Max Payne gets shot up and gets a nightmare. You actually have to beat the nightmare. The second time the bad guys OD him on a drug known as V. It's a lot more confusing and hard in the second one, bad after the second one it's good and clear though here on out. Well, I'm not going to spoil it for you, but he learns out everything and gets the real bad woman that is with all of this. Scale time.
Graphics: Great, awesome, with smiles! :D 10/10
Fun: There is some slow parts here, but most is fun. 9/10
Gameplay: It took me 30 hours WITH cheats 10/10
Sound: Awesome, it makes sound for even the panels! 9/10
Overall: Well, not perfect but Max Payne 2 will probably be twice as good! 9.5/10

Great game...if it wasn't so short and expensive!

I got this game as a gift. I'd seen several ads for it and it seemed like my kinda game, but I wouldn't have bought it myself, and I still stick by that. Its a great game, don't get me wrong. Its just so costly for what you get, as I believe someone pointed out earlier. Its too one-way...there aren't too many other options you can do in the scenarios but die or go through that door leading to the end of the level. The only cool thing I found is what I'll do with most games like this...play it once, beat it, download the cheats for it for unlimited weapons and play it again, unfairly slaughtering everyone in my path. And this game is PERFECT for that.

An incredible achievement...

For now--the end of 2001--this game goes down on my list as the pinnacle of PC game development. Sure, its also been ported to other platforms, but the sensibilities are directly in the tradition of Castle Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, DOOM, and Quake.

Each of those games, in their time, brought a new "wow" factor to third person shooters. Because of the existing history of these games "Payne" is definitely derivative. Even the slightly cheesy writing, and occasionally hilariously inappropriate casting of people who are obviously developers or spouses of developers in bit roles is part of that tradition.

But there aren't so many of this genre that the mere fact that it is derivative detracts from its greatness. Payne delves deep into the secret desire we all have to blast away bad guys (this time Mafia enforcers and drug dealers) and explodes it into ridiculous (but fun) proportions.

Max is a NY city cop with a young wife and a new kid. Inevitably, a bunch of crazy junkies end that dream by stumbling into his house and murdering his family. Max accepts a job offer with an undercover arm of the DEA and goes after the baddies.

Make no mistake... for all the cheese-factor this game really does try to put you "in the game". You are thrust directly into Max's discovery of his family's fate--not in "story" mode, but in the same third-person perspective as the action of the game. After Max joins the DEA he spends years undercover (told in story mode) and you see his only friend in the DEA (and the only one who knows he isn't really a criminal) get murdered in the same third person mode.

The bulk of the game follows the aftermath of THAT murder. Max is a fugitive from the police, and has lost his last bit of restraint in going after criminals. In the middle of the "worst blizzard in NY city history", he wanders around a version of NYC which looks like a circle of Dante's Hell and caps everyone in sight.

The most vaunted feature of "Max Payne" is the adoption of a Matrix-like "bullet time" feature which slows the action down and allows you aim in real time while everything moves in super-slo-mo. Let me say that this is NOT just a gimmick. It works in this game and works well--in fact it has to be used strategically to have a prayer of finishing the game.

The game is very linear--a classic failure of many First Person Shooter games--but in the case of THIS FPS it is handled very smoothly. The transition and boundries between territories makes perfect sense, and as much as we want to mock the writers for some of the cheesy dialog, they wrote the transitions wonderfully.

The game takes a full 3/4 of a gig hard drive space, but it will keep you glued to the screen. Highly recommended.

A very nice game.

If you're looking for a one line review : buy it. It's a nice game.....

Now let me get to the details......

1.First of all lot's of people say it's a short game.I don't really have any frame of reference (as the last mission based game I played was Half-life).Compared to that, this is a blink of an eye.But if you're like me and can only get to play about an hour or so a day to relax, well, then this game should last you about 2-3 weeks.Game play involves anything between 15-25 hours (for the first time)

2.The system requirements....a lot has been said about the huge system requirements of the game.It is possible to play on lower systems but you will sacrifice gameplay quality. It doesn't really matter a whole lot except in a few levels/gunfights which take place in darkened environments and you may not be able to see enemies wearing black coats.I played on a p3 933 128 mb ram with a pathetic video card and I couldn't take it above medium settings. You want to ensure that you have at least a GeForce2 card to really play it well. Otherwise....

3.The game puts you in he shoes of Max Payne,an NYC cop on the run because the police suspect him to be mafia and the mafia know him to be police. He has to avoid getting caught while at the same time hunt down those who framed him for the murder of his friends. In the beginning you start going up the ladder in the mafia killing everyone who stands in your way.But just as you think that you got your answers, a whole new conspiracy unfolds and suddenly you get a new target in the game.... The cloak and dagger in the game is done very slickly and it ties in very slickly with the story.

4.Now let's get down to the game itself....It's a really great game. You must have heard of bullet time-it's the best innovation in shooters for a long time. Many people say that you get bored of it in time but I didn't.If you can play with all the effects turned on it must be a fabulous visual experience.
However the gameplay is very linear. Most of the time you are either infiltrating or escaping from buildins etc.In hindsight, all the levels are cliched : a disused subway station,a seedy new york night club,an empty shipyard,a top secret research facility etc.But it's all woven into the story brilliantly.Soon you might get into the habit of going through a door, seeing which bad guys are there, then restarting where you last saved it and going through the door prepared (all just to save health). It happened to me for a few levels till Ii figured out that it was spoiling the experience. If you do buy the game, beware of turning it into just a quest to get throught the level with full health etc.Another point which should be mentioned... this game has adult content (and it's not the kind where game developers have to put ratings on their boxes because gibs fly etc)It truly has adult content and sensitive players may want to excercise the content control option.

5.The question is, after you've played the game once...then what?
When you play the game once over,2 new modes of playing are unlocked. The first, playing the same game with harder settings and the second, playing the same game against a clock ie. you have limited time to finish each level. But I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would want to play the game again! And herein lies the game's biggest weakness....After you play the game once, there is nothing you can do with it again. It's not like multiplayer games where you can play again and again and it's never the same game twice. In fact there is no multiplayer mode at all and the game has no netcode (I think) so you can never really play against anyone. When the developers released it I think they thought that the game would continue due to mods. Well right now there are only small mods which convert certain aspects of gameplay (like different weapons, cool backflips etc. which don't really enhance the gameplay experience.....they just make it look better). If you buy this game you should definitely download theultimate mod by uxraf. It's the best of the mods I just mentioned. However what you'll really be looking for is total conversions. There are quite a few in development but I think most of them won't be ready till the early part of next year.

So that's the deal....if you buy this game, you won't regret it.Not until you finish it anyway. After that you'll be clueless as to what should be done next. That's where I am right now.Let's hope some really good mods are made.I'm keeping my fingers crossed....
