I came home one day from work, the air around me was dark and evil. The house seemed a little dismal and a weird telephone call began to make me nervous. I ran up the stairs to see if my wife and kid were okay, thats when I heard the screams. Someone was hurting my family. My heart started to race and the door to the bedroom wouldnt open..all i heard was my wife's terrified voice screaming Max!! Than in a New York Minute my family was killed...by some druggies. After disposing of the killers...the emptiness filled my heart and my soul. And this was only the first few minutes of one of the most revolutionary games of all time. Both graphically and sound amazing Max Payne grips you without remorse. The gameplay is great with the "bullettime effect" becoming a zen strategic move that helps you uncover the truth. Max has everything and it gives it to you in the darkest story ever...i havent even finished the game and i am already hooked. Max Payne is simply Amazing.

This game is probably the best game I've ever played next to Half-Life. The graphics are incredible. Of course this is because I'm lucky enough to be playing on a AMD Athlon computer with a GeForce2 card. You need a very high end computer to play this game!! That is the one downside, along with the fact that there isn't a multiplayer. But who cares?! You can easily make your own levels and can even recreate your house. The tutorial was a nice way to start the game out, and you need it so you can get used to everything. And firing off a sniper rifle round into a person is a real treat because it follows the bullets path, right into their skull!! And I love the way your trenchcoat waves as you run down the halls. So, if you're looking for an action packed game then get this. But it's not good for very young kids because of the very dark storyline and all the killing. I hope you enjoy this game as much as I am! Thank you GOD.

The bottom line Max Payne is a cool game and the storyline is great. The graphic is superb. I have a PIII 500 meg hertz,192 meg of ram, 32 meg video card TNT ultra and the game plays flawlessly. Max Payne is not too short neither and 10 to 14 hours of game tend to be alot long actual game play . I normally prefer first person view over third person view , but, this game plays great.I dont know if this game is going to be the action game of the year, because of Red Faction , Medal of Honor: Allied Assault or SOF II haven't came out yet , I think it will give all those games a run for their money and it is a must have.
Wow.

Wow...That's the first words that come to my mind when I purchesed this game yesterday. Looking foward to it going gold for months now, I rushed out of my house early in the morning to pick up my preordered copy. After installing and setting graphic options..wow. Everything was done right in this game, from realistic physics to incredible graphics. Even the sound is impeccable, I reccomend this to anyone who has the system to run it. I reccomend a P3 running at 700 at least with a 32 meg video card with T & L, and at least 128 mb of ram. All in all, reccommended for anyone who whats to play a great game, and have a good sstory being told at the same time. Buy this now!

With all the action it promised, I really wanted to love this game. While the action does deliver, I was shocked by the game's wretched writing and story line. Corny at best and offensive at worse, the cut scene comic pages seem to be as one dimensional as the paper they are supposed to be printed on. Yeah yeah, I get the fact that we are supposed to be "in" a graphic novel and the writing is to some extent self referential, however, this graphic novel is just really really REALLY bad. The characters spit out Mickey Spillane lines with no motivation or depth giving the game none of the swagger and mood of the real novels. Yeah, I get the John Woo references too, but, as Generation X taught us, pop-culture references masquerading as entertainment often hide empty space where thoughtful plot and dialogue should be. I commend the developers for the great maps and the eye-popping gun play but I just hate the writing so much it makes me not want to play. Keep the engine, scrap the game.

Max payne is one of the best games i have ever played. Unfortunatly it is very short and has no multiplayer, But it has a great replay value. It is the closest you will ever get to starring in a John woo movie. The slow-motion bullet time does not remind me of the matrix. It remindes me of an 80's B movie called "TRANCERS" a clone of the terminator, Starring Helen Hunt. In that film the bad guy fires his gun at helen hunt and the hero (i dont remember who) presses a button in his watch and it slows down time, Then he pushes helen hunt before the bullet reaches her, You could see the bullet go past her. The guy is from the future to save helen hunt from getting killed before she saves the future, Just like the terminator. His watch could give him a long second, One second takes one minuite to pass through only for him. This movie came much before the matrix. It must have inspired the bullet sence in the matrix too.
Awesome!

This game has one of the most artistically fascinating and creepy sequences in a game ever. I will not spoil it, but if you have not played it, get this one!

You people that are reviewing the game based on "videos" and demos are full of it. This is the most pointless collection of reviews I have ever read, with ALL of them based on pre-release code and many of them never even having played the demo. Get a life people. Play the game when it comes out and THEN do a review based on gold code.
You people need a clue.
Great Graphics but Where's the Joystick??

With this game I find it important to mention what system and settings are being used:
Computer: PCV-RX370DS Processor: P4 1.3Ghz RAM: 512MB 800Mhz Rambus Monitor Resolution: 1024 X 768
First off, the game has incredible graphics. It appears more like a DVD than a video game. No complaints whatsoever on a graphics stand point. The game moves very fluidly (yes, the P4 and the 512MB of RAM are probably the main contributors to the fluid movement). Also note that I set every setting within Max Payne to the highest possible setting to get the most out of the game.
However, I have not played more than 3 minutes of the game because of its LACK OF JOYSTICK support. I can not come to grasps with the idea that it took years for this game to be released and then when it does, it doesn't even support a joystick!! Ridiculous!! I would have been disappointed if the game wouldn't have supported force feedback, but to not support a joystick at all!? What where the developers thinking?
Anyway, if you are the type of gamer that still uses the keyboard for game play (I know plenty of people that still do), you don't get disturbed by the scene settings (keep in mind that the opening scene shows your dead infant and dead wife in gruesome detail), and you want to see what all the hype is about regarding this game, snag it. But as for me, it will sit on my hard drive unused until someone develops a patch that allows for joystick support (force feedback support would make it that much better).
a very well done game

3 stars is pretty good for me as i have yet to give a game 5 stars and i would say max payne is maybe 3 and a half. i wont really go into the plot much of this game as its always the easiest info to come across. i'll just give you my positives and my complaints that lead to my score.
positive:
a good story!,
i find video games woefully deficient in this regard normally and when people talk about good stories at best i think it is relative. i am still waiting for a great story, but found mp to be one of the (few) reasonably solid ones. as a fan of cutscenes i thought i would miss them more than i did (the story is told through quite good graphic novel panels). the ending in particular is notably satisfying, with the gameplay integrating well and interestingly with the action itself to produce an actual, mostly reasonable, closed ending conclusion (shockingly rare in computer games!).
you can save the game anytime.
looks pretty nice for a dated game, not beautiful, but can be stylish.
good gameplay balance and feel, i liked the voice acting and characters, film noir theme worked quite well (i enjoyed the lack of monsters!) interesting progression of improved weapons, gameplay mechanics sound, self adjusting difficulty levels a little bit of an odd concept, but actually worked pretty well (the game adjusts the difficulty level according to how you're doing), i like my games a bit on the easier side of things and the level of challenge here was really pretty good for me. i had really only a couple notably frustrating times (one a run through a burning building), but i've had worse. also, i LIKED the length of this game! it is a common complaint that it was too short, but i find very few games are actually anywhere good or interesting enough to hold my interest all the way through as they all end up as more of the same after awhile. 12 to 15 hours (a guess, i don't exactly recall) is a very good length for a shooter and seemed just right for max payne.
you might also enjoy that this game should work on even a pretty dated system today (i found the game very stable with its patch), and that you should be able to get it for dirt cheap.
negatives:
the extremely interesting bullet time feature, while cool, actually gives no advantage that i can tell. if anything it was a disadvantage mostly and you're better off just barging through or in (they fix this in max payne 2, but do worse on other accounts).
there are alot of locked doors as in "hmm this door is locked, i'll try that one, oh, i tried that already."
the gameplay is not notably diverse, shooting, navigating, a bit of light puzzle solving. the gritty urban world is okay, but not all that interesting to explore or anything.
conclusion: this is a very good meat and potatoes action adventure shooter. it will not blow you away but is pretty fun and as good as pretty much anything else in its genre (taking into account its age which probably means less than most of us "newest thing" addicts are inclined to admit). i recommend it.
