Too Much Fun

Max Payne is a lot of fun and has a great story to boot!

The game is great but is pretty short, maybe 12-15 hours of gameplay. The game is also very addiciting, I haven't but people i know have beaten this game in a day. Bullet-Time is a great feature which puts everything in slo-mo to let you aim at enemys and focus on a head-shot, while dodgeing bullets at the same time, very innovative.

The game is story-driven and let me tell you that the story is fantastic. Its probably the reason that most people spend all day playing it... to see what happens next in the story.

Theres one downside to Max Payne, lack of multi-player. if you want to have fun with some friends, sorry, look somewhere else becuase Max Payne won't let you play on the net.

Lastly, i don't know the min. system requirements so here are the specs for my system... 1ghz AMD Athlon, 256mb Ram, 32mb Geeforce 2 video card, Hercules GameSurround Furtismo II sound card... the video settings are at their highest and the sound settings are at their highest as well. The game runs perfect without any skipping in either sound or video.

Very very fun

I didn't think the 'slow-mo' idea would really work, but it turned out to be a great addition to the game. Very interesting story and excellent all in all.

The gameplay makes up for the clichés.

The story is one big cliché, the game even admits it at the middle of it. But this is still one hell of a game.

To think of it this game started years ago, and I was sure it was heading down the utterly forgettable Duke Nukem 3D clone lane (yes, the game was announced that way back) but it seems that Matrix gave Remedy the correct dose of inspiration, for without Bullet Time, this game would be terrible.

Bullet Time isn't a gimmick or a late addition trying to save the game (Can you say Red Faction's destructable scenario?). It's amazingly useful, and the game would be pretty much impossible without it. It saves the game from being just another run-of-the-mill shooter to probably one of the best games of the year (The only better game that pops into my mind this year is Operation Flashpoint)

The story is told by very well drawn and voiced over comic book strips. Pretty much everything Max Payne says has been said over and over again a hundred times before in movies and other comic books. I kind of expected that after seeing his last name (Payne - Pain. Oh so clever!) but still...

The graphics are awesome. This is the kind of game that makes you proud to own a good video card, or lower your head in shame when you watch the slide-show with a Voodoo 1. The textures are incredibly crisp, the lighting effects are awesome. But of course, the incredible engine makes it all look better when you slow it down with Bullet Time. The only thing I think they did poorly was Max Payne's face. It looks like he has some extremely serious problem in his bowels, and forgot to use a bathroom. Seriously, his face looks terrible.

The sound effects are also top-notch. The voice-overs are incredible, something you only see outside console games (sadly enough). The guns sound great as well, so does the incredible music. Everything fits together perfectly, like a tight jigsaw puzzle.

The game lasts about 10-15 hours, but with the additionable unlockable difficulty modes and the final extra (trust me, it's worth it), the game will last you a while. Plus, as a corridor shooter, the fun of finishing it again after six months is always present.

Awesome graphics, incredible gameplay, great replay value, great sound effects. Max Payne pretty much has it all. Buy it. It lives up to the 3D REALMS name it has stamped on it's box. Not since Duke Nukem 3D I have enjoyed a "brainless" shooter as much as this. You can't afford to miss this masterpiece.

Thrill from beginning to end

If you even think of buying something else forget it. Max Payne is the best game of 2001. A plot that will keep you drawn in close from start to finish. A game that you will sit down and play and lose track of time. A fantastic game which captures the slo-motion of the "Matrix" in a bullet-time mode. If you like games like Halflife, Hitman Codename 47, or Rainbow six you will love this. The best Action game ever invented!

The best action game I have ever played!....

I only have one word for this game: Wow. This game just blows me out of the water with amazing graphics, great storyline, easy controls, balanced gameplay, sweet sound and best of all awsome gameplay that will turn your head. This game is easily up there with Half-life if not better. "Bullet time" is easily the best feature in the game. When you are in a tight spot, all you have to do is right click and time it self slows down, but your mouse doesn't slow down, giving you incredible aim. This feature makes the game have a more cinematic feel and helps you out alot. Speaking of cinematics, the game itself is very much like a movie, this game IS a John Woo movie because it takes all those gun dives and the still motion cameras and puts it into a game. The cinematic feel makes this game. Of Course you are buying the game to play, not to watch and to play is not a problem either. The gameplay is just sheer brillance, you'll love the way you move around dodging bullets and placing bullets into the head of the enemies who get in your way. Many of the features of this game are brand new. Alot of people on the net are saying that you need a P4 with 1.5GHz to play this game. Thats bull, it works alright on a P3 with 500Mhz. Of course the better the system the better the gameplay. The only downfall to this game is that there is no multiplayer which makes its replay value low. Also the game is rather short. For the price of I paid for this I consider this game is a bargin. I suggest you buy this game. Sure you don't know who I am or how much I play PC games, but you are gonna wanna trust me......This game is just incredible. Note: If you decide to pass this game up and get another game for your hard earned bucks you will regret it when you see every single gaming publication out there give it "Game of the Year" or "Action game of the year" awards.

Beat my expectation

This is a roller-coaster ride of a game. The settings are more varied than the hard-boiled film-noir game premise led me to expect, which was a pleasant surprise. The relentless pacing and scale reminded me of "The Fugitive," as well as "The Matrix" and all of the Woo movies. It is a linear game - problems only have one solution and it is often to shoot. But it is as close to playing out a great action movie as I have seen yet.

Some people complained about the length, but it seemed a mid-lengthed game that delivered fully on the premise in richness, pacing, and story. I can't wait to play it a second time.

A Well-Made Depiction of Society's Ugly Side

This is a great game, but, some may be uncomfortable owning a game with this kind of content. It does have an M rating, but that doesn't say it all. These details below were really what made me decide whether or not to own this game:

ATMOSPHERE: This is not light-hearted game. Most of the game is spent in back alley slums and run down whorehouses, complete with stoned out drugees, random screams and sirens, and dismal and depressing settings. On top of that, for a large part of the game you're in a Satanists Lair with rituals and evidence of rituals all intact. Some might enjoy that gritty realism and some not, you can decide that for yourself. You also revisit some disturbing dreams of murders of a family where you hear the screams of some women and children.

VIOLENCE: Isn't really as gory or realistic as the setting could be. Mostly it's just cinematic action style that's a little on the bloody side. In comparison, it's nowhere near as graphic as Soldier of Fortune or Kingpin, which are similar games in nature. I'd say the violence level (not the atmosphere) compare to the feel of the movie The Matrix.

SEXUAL CONTENT: Some evidence of prostitution, but no actual acts presented. Some bikini posters on the wall. .

PROFANITY: Not heavy, but present to a PG or PG-13 level.

OVERALL: if these things above are of no concern to you, there is no reason not to buy this game.

Best action game -- just incredible

Believe the amazing hype -- Max Payne is the new Half-Life, with a stronger character than Duke Nukem. I can't say enough great things about this super fun, yet gut-wrenching game. Gut-wrenching because the story is the best story ever in a computer game and is the first to really make you feel like you're playing a movie. Oh, and the player controlled slow-motion movies that Max can make is the best innovation in games in years. If you're only buying one game this year, this is the one.

INCREDIBLE AND FANTASTIC - AN AMAZING GAME!!

I have never ever reviewed a software game before, but I felt that this game, Max Payne, deserved my praise. First off, you need a powerful computer. I am running a Pentium 4, 1.4 ghz, 512 mb. of ram, 64mb video card. The game runs almost true to life on it. The graphics are breathtaking and groundbreaking. The game play is solid, excellent story and flow. It gets you involved as most games do not. You are the character, you take an interest in "his life". Adding to the graphics is the overall feel of the game, the atmosphere, the pace. This is one of the best games I have ever played. I usually buy many of these types of games only to be dissapointed in the graphics (which usually look good on the box, but not on the game) The graphics are actually better during the game than the box shows. I even thought the tutorial, which I recommend, was helpful, if not all encompassing. If these types of games are the wave of the future, then virtual reality cannot be far behind. Buy it and you will not be dissapointed. The only downside I can think of is someone not having at least the recommened requirements that are shown on the box, which are quite high. Play a high end machine, and you will be lit up!!

False Hype

Max Payne has impressive graphics and lag rarely interfered with the gameplay; the levels are pretty varied and I guess kind of fun to play; also, the levels interact well with the bullet-time feature.

On the flipside:

The gameplay is SO freakin repetitive--I just got bored: encounter an enemy and gun em down with bullet-time. Yes, I did this some seven thousand times. I mean, what kind of shooter doesn't have buttons to press and levers to pull that provide some variation from the monotonous shooting (from MP I learned that this is not an oximoron)?

And to make matters worse, the gun selection is slim with only sixteen guns, and boring ones at that. Sure every shooter's gotta have the classic baseball bat, shotgun, and desert eagle, but most make up for it with something cool like a gattling gun or chainsaw. But MP only had the same old, same old--uzis, berettas, grenades, a lame rocket launcher.

Also, the hype for the bullet-time feature was way over-blown. For starts, from some of the screenshots I chcked out before buying the game, I thought that, during bullet-time, the camera views would switch to something cool and cinematic. Not the case. You just dive at an angle and the camera follows where you point. In sum, very monotonous.

Another aspect that was seriously overhyped was the plot. I wont give anything away, but a lot is not addressed in the game--why was Max's family killed and he, subsequently framed? Also, I expected an intense, twisting plot. There was none. All the attempts at twists were failures and not once was I suprised by discoveries Max made on his quest.

What a dissapointment. When I had gotten sick of the game itself, all that drove me to the end was the anticipation of some closure with regard to the plot. But the game ended without any. Well, it was a boring ride and a stupid end. Dont buy it
