Longetivity is a word that is underestimated in the PC gaming world, Championship manager and Baldurs Gate are 2 examples of games which can be played forever, especially with all the add on's and unofficial extras. The graphics seem a little weak at first but soon it grows on you and you are immersed in the intelligent plot and strong characters.
Buy it if you like role playing games. Its the best
Fun RPG, but lag and bad game control ruined it.

Before I begin, let me tell you that I have a decent PC. I can run Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Quake1,2,3, Kingpin, Mechwarrior1,2, Diablo2, and Starcaft PERFECTLY.
Now here is what I think of BG2:
Advantages: Good variety of characters. Good variety of maps. Great interaction-NPCs, allies, enemies. Good variety of stories and possible paths to chose from. You can be a good OR evil hero; it's cool.
Disadvantages: Laggy game play: movement of screen, characters; even the interface needs loading EVERY single click.
Bad control of game: The hot spots are so hard to target; you have to click on them perfectly. For example, to leave a town you have to click on the exit hotspot, but it is hard to find with the mouse since the hotspot is so small and seems to have been placed randomely anywhere near where the map claimed it was.
Bad fighting action: eg. the players exchange blows every 3 seconds or more.
No cool cutscenes (no 3D animation to please the eyes).
The characters take forever to walk from destination to destination. There is no run mode like Diablo2.
The only reason I gave this game a passing grade is because of the RPG aspect of it. The companies did a great job at making the stories creative and rich.
Although the RPG aspect of Diablo2 is lesser, its control and action is 10 times better than BG2, and not to mention it doesn't have the lag problems that BG2 does.
If you want to get this game, please go to a friend's house (or wherever) and see it for yourself first.
You can see my initial concerns of lag at bg2world.com....

This Game is deffently worth getting but like all things it could use some improvement. The story line, voices in the game, and graphics are grate but I still find it hard to forget that am still playing a game. I know that is what it is but I'm still looking for that game that is so relistic that I forget it is a game (as we all are). At any rate its well worth the mony and you will get a lot of play time out of it ( I mean alot). The only resion I didn't give it 5 stars is cuz it would have to be perfect and little is.

perhaps it was the idealized speech, or the gently set landscapes, or the prospect of magic talismands, or even the storyline, but whatever it was, I can definately say that this game is "romantic". Yet, even in saying this, I still appreciate this game perhaps more than any RPG game I have ever played. Now, If you're like me, and appreciate games for their gameplay and not their beauty, then this game might not entice you at first, yet it is quite engrossing. It pulled many aspects that I enjoyed about Diablo II and Nox into the game (although I am not commending Westwood for that Diablo want to be) and also had many "board game-like aspects". And suprisingly, I did eventually find the romantic blend of Realism and surrealism set in a Tolkien-like setting quite interesting. The weapon and item inventory was well thought-through, with a hint of intellectualism injected into the story. All and all, I would say that this game redefined the romantic RPG.
Sadly Lacking

You may love it now, but five years from now you'll wonder why you cared. Shadows of Amn is an attractive but stupid companion, a vacuous bubble-head that is nice in the sack but grows boring when you find that lover who has no head lice.
BG2 has flaws and is an imitation of long ago published modules for AD&D. Modules B-1, D-1, and a few others went into the making of this "unique" game. Supposedly the coders and designers are in love with D&D and that makes it better, but to be quite plain, most of the wonderful D&D spells weren't present, and this game fell far below Darksun CRPG in intelligence and imagination.
The new character classes were repetitive when they weren't useless. Berserker was the same as Barbarian, the Druid kits sucked, Blade and Swashbuckler should have been condensed into a single class, Skald and Jester were useless, Assassins had an ability anyone could develop, Archers were not powerful enough to compensate for their deficits, although Undead Slayers and Blades were interesting. The Dragon Magazine archival cd (for the IBM PC) presents many interesting character classes that were better constructed than most kits, and this was with unmalleable old first edition D&D. The Jester, Barbarian, and Archer classes from Dragon Magazine were far better done in those ancient pages than in this lame brained CRPG.
Graphical and audial beauty were indeed present, but as to a poetic fantasy and artistic integrity? There wasn't any. Five years from now you will be muttering, "The graphics were so typical, the music was nice but repeated so often..."
The game is filled with programming errors, unfinished areas, and poorly considered plots. It all seemed as if developed and designed by marijuana befuddled high schoolers, except for the art and music.
My advice is wait til Neverwinter is published, and bombard Black Isle and Bioware with complaints about their lack of creativity and intelligence in design.
God This is a great game but...

For all I have played this game it is just superb. The problem is that it crashes evrey 15 min. I guess i'll have t wait for a patch. All other games on my computer never crash so I ma quite disapointed. I hope interplay will test more carefully next time.
Left me hanging.

I played the original BG1 and thought it was a fantastic game. If you are considering playing BG2 and haven't played BG1 yet, play BG1 first. That said, I think the sequel is an improvement over the first.
The story takes quite at turn at the beginning, as you find yourself and comrades trapped. The game does an excellent job of interaction with "non player" characters. I think the AI behind some of the quests of characters that join your party is fantastic. The story is intriguing, and the cinematic effects are stunning. Some of the larger monsters are great, and the quests are more complex. It's hard not to get involved in the game.
I have a Celeron 500 with 128MB of RAM and 32MB Matrox card and the game was flawless. I played the game in the higher resolution graphics mode (800x600) and was very impressed. I didn't notice the slow downs others have mentioned in their reviews.
The only problem I have is that they have said they won't do a sequal to BG2. Too bad, I would pre-order it today if they would. Even the ending hints at a sequel that won't ever be done. At least characters can be exported for their upcoming Neverwinter Nights...

I had some issues with slowdown in multi-mage battles on a P3 866, 128MB RAM and 32MB GEForce2, but other than that game-play was excellent. Great storyline. Great interactions with NPCS. Reminds my why I liked P&P gaming so much. If only I could play with others:-(
Very Entertaining

This game is great. It has all the elements that a good RPG game can have and it's very challenging. At least 60 hours of play or more.
