Baldurs Gate 2, shadows of Amn

Can't create your own party. Have to have one character with silly story and incessant dialog, get npc add ons that one would not use if one could create their own party. About as bad as Planetscape Torment. Even looks the same. How Black Isle can produce good game like Icewind and then something not so good like this is a mystery.

What an Experience.......

Baldur's Gate 2 is the new gold standard by which all RPGs will be measured for years to come. It is the perfect balance of story, characterization, action, environmental mood, all of the elements of a great game are here. But be warned! This game is very difficult, and should only be attempted by hardcore RPG gamers. I hate people who knock RPGs, (I was once one myself until Baldur's Gate 1 came out) The best this here in my mind are the characters. You only create one character, the leader. The rest are put into the game, and you must find them. The really neat idea about this game is that the character talk to each other as the game goes on, providing you with very interesting views of their personalities. Never has this been accomplished so well, not even in Final Fantasy games. The mood of this game is a very dark one. The story is centered around a creepy, evil, and seemingly all powerful mage named Irenicus attempting to control your character by manipulating, and even murdering, your companions. There has never been a more threatening enemy in my mind. One of the great new features is that characters can use two weapons at once now, just like good old Drizzt. Our favorite drow even makes a guest appearence in this massive adventure. The replay value may not be that high, but with a game that takes 200-300 hours to beat? Who cares!

THE greatest

The first Baldur's Gate set a new level in computer RPGs and the sequel blows it away. The storyline draws you in from the beginning and the action is almost non-stop thanks to a wonderful sense of urgency. With the higher character levels and class specific quests, not to mention the spectrum of alignments, the game will be different every time it is played. Buy this game now!

As a owner of DiabloII one of the greatest hack and slash games, I must say I wanted more feeling that I am really in the game. I always tried doing like I'm going to a bar in act2, but no one talks back to me :( I think that as soon as this game comes out I will buy it. Will I be able to talk to people?!

Shadows of Amn -- NOT any better than the first

I read a review of B.G. II sometime ago, which led me to believe this was a much-improved version of the first B.G. That is not the case --judging from game-play I've experienced thus far.

I don't think even the character interface is much improved over the earlier B.G...just a little different in interface and graphics (but not any better, in my opinion). At least I have not seen much improvement in the starting-dungeon.

Perhaps this was by design...perhaps it's like the beginning (in black and white as opposed to the later techni-color) of the Wizard of Oz? I sincerely hope so, for my money's sake.

One would think they might have, at least, improved the interface, but I guess Black Isle figured why mess with something that worked? Oh sure, it's a little different...but the basic interface is the same! And it's not even aesthetically more pleasing!

I haven't explored farther than the first 'act' of this game, but have yet to find anything different from the original B.G.

I hope to find something better/different later. So far, nothing. Save your money; if you liked the original Baldur's Gate, great...but don't expect anything different, or improved, in Black Isle's latest...B.G. II.

Actually, I guess Neverwinter Nights (and its expansion(s)) are the most recent things from Black Isle...but I don't care for them any more than Baldur's Gate II.

I guess I'm missing out on group game-play? The solo game-play is good, but nothing better than the original Baldur's Gate. In fact, the reason I liked BG1 was the capability to play multiplayer while soloing.

I mean, you got to play a party of 6, with one main character...in NWN, you only get one player, at least as far as I've played it solo.

Baldur's Gate was a fun game, but it seldom deviated from the 'find monster, kill monster...save game lest you be killed and must start over at some earlier point.'

I guess that was part of its appeal. Unfortunately, Black Isle, apparently, doesn't know where to go from there.

There's not really any strategy involved. You just get used to playing ever-increasingly-more-difficult monsters...and pausing more, or you have to start over for some pointless repetitive play.

I loved the first Baldur's Gate. The jury is still out, for me, on Neverwinter Nights -- I don't like solo play in it at all, but the multiplayer capability may prove it a more fun game. I haven't experimented with that aspect of it.

With respect to the B.G. series, it seems to me that Black Isle became satisfied with its status quo in Baldur's Gate I, and so did not improve on the game in BGII. They just went for what they thought would sell based on the original -- not original at all, but it sells!

This game is one of the best!

This game is fun and full of stuff to do that you will never be bored. I don't care if people say that its a copy of the first. A great thing about the game is that they bring back some of the npc from the last. My fav has to be Minsce and Boo they are the best! There is a review that I read that I thought was silly. a guy was complaining about in the begining of the game how your trapped and you have to kill the little guy in the jar. first off I think thats the best thing! because that drives me to want to defeat the bad guy even more and the fact that he takes your best friend to jail. Yet let me remind that guy....life back in that time was dark and evil....so pick up your sword or spell book and get ready for some butt kicking!!!

This is one good game. I just got it and I can't stop playing it, except for writing this review and getting a new computer. It is much the same as Baldur's Gate 1, as it should be, because its a sequel. The story is a continuation of BG1, and you start out in a jail. You free your friends and escape the jail, and your on your way to a HUGE quest of madness. Its a fun ride and I havent finished it yet, but its well, try it if you liked BG1, or IWD 1/2.

Bottom line: same as BG1, play it if your wanting to lose all contact with friends/family...and play an excellent game.

Excellent Game! (4 1/2 stars)

I just finished BG2:SOA, and it is in fact better than its groundbreaking predecessor. Great story, nice cut scenes, lots of atmosphere, and deep character development make it one of the best RPG gaming experiences available. There is really nothing negative I can say about this game. The developers went all out to top BG1 and succeeded. BG2:SOA is a longer game, but more focused and takes its time telling a compelling story. The NPCs that can join your party (my favorites are Minsc and Boo) have their own stories and a lot of spoken dialogue which gives the game a very immersive feel. The music and sound effects are good as well. The only criticisms that I have are minor. Jaheira had a looping dialogue regarding the Harper quest that eventually corrected itself, and the last fight was insanely difficult, but quite fulfilling once I won (after many, many tries). Bottom line: this is an excellent computer RPG from an excellent company that cares a lot about detail and its customer base. I would recommend this game to anyone who has played the first one (which isn't necessary to play this one) or gamers who enjoy RPGs.

Few, not even BioWare, follow the path prepared by BG.

Baldur's Gate shows us how great a CRPG can be when the NPC's are well written and placed in the context of a great, epic story. Epics have grandeur and scale, but they also spend a lot of time fleshing out small details. Just read Homer's Iliad as an example.

Baldur's Gate did not always have great writing, but it had enough of it to show us a glimpse of what we had been missing in CRPGs. Now with Neverwinter Nights and Icewind Dale it is clear that the focus of both BioWare and Black Isle has shifted away from great storytelling.

We can only hope that BioWare's secret RPG project and Black Isle's semi-secret Project Jefferson return to the path perpared by the Baldur's Gate series. Otherwise, we are bound for the Path of Eternal Barrel Smashing.
