I have been playing games since the young age of 6, so I know a good game when I see one. I purchased BGII:SOA recently and it was one of the best purchases I have ever made. Unfortunatly the game stuffed up after a while(Due to a damaged CD), but I am willing to re-pay the price to buy another copy. This time around I may buy Throne of Bhaal as well. Anyway, the fact is if you are looking to buy this game, BUY IT. Even though the whole Advanced D+D thing is a bit intimidating(Ever seen the board game's manuals!!!), you do not need to know anything technical. And if you are looking to buy this game as a gift, you will be popular with the reciptent. Mixing tactical combat with in-depth gameplay makes an over-all thrilling experience not to be missed. Bearing 300 spells(yes, you read right.), and over 100+ hours of spectacular gameplay, you will never grow tired of playing this game. Although I haven't played them, the other members of the Forgotten Realms family should be worth a look as well, such as Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment. Overall an excellent game, not to be missed by D&D or adventure lovers alike. *****(5 Stars)
Sequel? More like expansion pack!

I bought Baldur's Gate 2 with high expectations because the first one was great, but suffered from a slow plot line. Well, after I did the full install, which took up 2.4 gigabyes on my hard drive, my ears were blown off my skull by the sound quality of the opening movie. It sounded like it was coming out of a home entertainment theater center!
The process of character creation was familiar, and a new race, the half-orc, in introduced into the game, along with many extra character classes. I choose to be a druid because of their ability to shapeshift, and I started out. There is also a tutorial, but veterans of the first one need not use it, and in a second, you'll find out why.
It was soon after I started that I got a sense of extreme deja vu, and worse, ennui. This game looks EXACTLY the same as the first one, and the interface hasn't changed at all. You still have to pause the battle ever so often with the space bar, and you still have to run around everywhere looking for stuff and clearing out the map.
I didn't like all the reading and all the wordy and useless decisions of the first one, and not only did I get a decision-making session as soon as I entered the game, but also, a few minutes into the first level, I was treated with a small library of at least 20 books that, in order to fully understand the game, I must read thoroughly. That was about the time the ennui set in. Sure, a little reading is okay, but too much boggles down the game.
I wouldn't call Baldur's Gate 2 a sequel, because most sequels have different appearances, interfaces, etc. I would venture to say that this game is more of a mission add-on for the original Baldur's Gate, because while yes, it does have a different story and a few new monsters, the graphics, interface, weapons, and many spells remain essencially the same. So, I gave it three stars because it's the rating that I gave the original.
If Baldur's Gate 3 ever comes out, I have a suggestion...don't be scared to CHANGE something about Baldur's Gate because of what happened when Sierra changed King's Quest 8!
Overall terrible game

Here is the deal people, the game plot is good, very good, but it all rolls down hill from there. First of all if you buy this game, save and save a lot (thank god for the quick save option), because you will, I repeat will experience crashes, any where from everyonce in a while to quite frequently. You will also experience several glitches and bugs, some that will keep you from being able to kill the bad guy John Irenicus. Don't rely on Interplay or Black Isle for help...... their idea of customer service is and always has been... release the game and leave the customer behind because once they buy it, we have our money. The game got boring after a couple days of playing because it was basically the same stuff all the time, run into an NPC he/she has a problem, you go hack and slash your way through hordes of bad guys to solve it, no real problem solving involved. They did very little to fix the AI from Baldurs Gate 1, but they did come up with "way points", that is if you feel like taking the time to lay them out AND know what is ahead of you through the Fog of War. They boasted that the game was going to be more acceptable of 'Evil' characters, but it really isn't, all of your NPC's in your party will be mostly "lawful good or chaotic good" except for one Mage that you can get and the two druids who are nuetral (but they act more good than true nuetral)and Viconia, and they will leave you at the first sign of you "evil ways", that's right, you can't go clear whole city blocks of citizens and expect to have a party left with you. Bottom line, the game is terrible, it seems like interplay rushed the game out about four of five months too soon. Oh and if you have a problem at the final battle and can't seem to kill John Irenicus, find out wich party member isn't talking remove them from your party, and then ask them to rejoin, interplay made me find that out on my own, quality service I tell ya.
It's not for everyone

I've played several rpgs over the years from Prince of Persia, Shining Wisdom, Grandia II to Diablo 2 and Everquest, all to the end or very high levels.
I read a lot of BG 2 reviews praising it and decided to try it. Having never played any type of D&D games before I found it impossible to jump into this game and get started, right from the first step of character creation where you will have no idea what to do if you haven't done D&D things before. The tutorial was slightly helpful but more than anything it proved to me how dorky and clunky the interface is. The manual is again pretty useless for actually learning to play the game, though it seems to be full of cute stories. I still have no idea how to pick the best weapons for my characters. The combat is just bad, if you can even figure out at the beginning how to manage four players all at the same time without hitting pause every 2 seconds, then you get to watch some really jerky action where your little characters with lousy graphics are mostly hacking at air. The spells are interesting enough but the system for managing them and pressing the sleep button randomly to regenerate them) is horrible. There's no way to tell how tough a monster is without just attacking it and seeing if it dies. There are just bizarre things (apparently D&D) like golems can only be attacked with blunt weapons. And these are just the tip of the iceberg of my experience with the game.
So in the end there are hundreds if not thousands of little details to keep track of, an interface that still feels incredibly clunky after I've been trying to play it for 6 months, poor control in general, bad combat with dorky looking characters (with lag and bugs such as freezes even on my 1.4 Mhz Geforce-2 video card machine) and a story that has refused to get me involved with it's stupid dialogue. All this despite me chipping away at it for 6 months just because so many people seem to like it.
So I would never recommend it to anyone other than maybe hardcore D&D people who already know those systems. Even then I don't understand why they'd like it with much more playable games out there.
Five stars without hesitation!

An exceptional game and even better than the original, that's usually not the case with most games. I have only played and owned it for about a day but I know enough to know it is very intriguing and the NPC party members are improved over the BG I game. The class kits are wicked, like has been said before, as they inhance your lvl 7/8 character to even greater ablilties. I have only just become familiar with AD&D rules but I enjoy creating and re-creating and experimenting with different class/class kits. There is even the incentive to play a boring paladin because of the kits. Cavaleir, a much better and more knightly sort than the plain paladin, is the character I'm playing now. I also like swashbuckler and the ranger. Yes you can use two wheapons in this game, any fighting character can become a master in two wheapons. And it looks really cool. No drow option but one joins your band. This game is action-packed as well as a good story and character developement. As for the action part battles can become long frequent and tedious like in the first BG if you don't have carefully planned scripts for each character(including you). Fighting band after band of weak monsters is pointless, let the PC handle part of it. You can jump in for adjustments. I recommend finishing BG 1 if you haven't already because once you've played this you'll never want to play BG 1 again. BG III should be the best yet if things go like they are!
can you say: "CHA CHING"?

It's been about a month since I picked up Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, and I'm not that impressed. It starts you out in a dungeon that is a little boring and not very intriguing. It also takes about one or two real-time days to get out without help from a strategy guide. Once I was in the second chapter, I was a little more satisfied but not enough. The game is huge, but it's size makes it almost impossible to finish all of the mini-quests that are hidden throughout the land. The graphics are also a little blurry especially since it has that sort of Diablo-type overhead view. Anyway, that game was a little fun and would recommend you to buy it only if you are a die-hard Baldur's Gate fan or if you are REALLY bored.
Enjoy slow motion animation battles that put you to sleep?

This game eats your computer up. Gives you bad control over the characters. The characters spend more time standing there than fighting. I can go get a coffee and come back and they would have just begun to trade blows. Load load load. Insignifant mission after mission. Moody characters that are supposed to be your friends. Interface...terrible. Annoying pictures. Annoying smart remarks. Did I mention load load load? Click click click, oops I missed the treasure chest again. Oops I am attacking my own player again.
THIS GAME SUCKS. I'd rather play Pacman; at least he won't stare at his enemies for 5 seconds before he attacks him. This game frustrated me so much it deserves -5.
Better than Diablo2? Only "BlackIsle Amazon.com surfers" and "Die hard Baldure's Gate already mind made up fans" would say so.
I look down the list of comments and I noticed your comments only help if you give a positive one. Go ahead, say my comment didn't help. I'd rather keep my integrety than please people with what they want to hear.
I wouldn't be surprised if Black Isle staff has been here stop IP and User hopping to discredit negative reviews; only die hard fans are falling for it.
Black Isle will get no more of my money or time. Blizzard is better and so are many other companies.
Long Live Valve!
Almost as good as Diablo 2

I am an action lover. Seriously. My absolute favorite game is Soldier of Fortune so enough said. When i played a demo of Baldur's Gate 2, I was skeptical at first. How could this beat Diablo 2? It doesn't but nothing can beat Diablo2 in that category. This comes pretty close though. First of all, the graphics are very good and the monsters can be pretty big (Note: Bigger=Harder). The game's plot so far is very scary. You wake up in a prison, losing all your memory. The sacry part is your teammate thinks that experiments have been done on her. Spooky! Thanks to the fantastic dialouge and voice-acting, the situation is much more terrifying than it really is. Now onto gameplay. The gameplay is quick and simple, but the inventory isn't as easy to use as in Diablo 2. The game has a button for everything, whether it be talk, pull a lever, or go in to combat. Speaking of combat, it can be pretty overwhelming at first, but there are a number of options that can make it a snap. YOu can turn down the diffuculty or, if the situation comes up, try "resting". That will put you to maximum health and make the game a whole lot easier and more fun to play. Also, the interface is likely to help you in a ton of situations. One example is when I had to turn off this machine. I moved the mouse around and an icon came up. When I clicked, it turned off! (Note: I am only in the beginning of the game, so it could be easier or harder when you continue). This game is not perfect. This game's length make epic too short of a word. I like depth in my games, but 150 hours alone with no quests! GOODNESS! Also, the variety of things you have to do in the very beginning of the game are tedious. Still, this game is very fun. (My review should have 4.5 stars). Thus, look into this game and see if its for you. And if you do buy it, get a strategy guide too. I've got a feeling it will come in handy.
this game is sweet!
